A Message from the Commodore

Even though February is the shortest month of the year, it was still a busy month around PCYC. We had back to back events starting off with the Super Bowl Party, followed by Bards of the Binnacle and then the Pass Parade which

were all well attended. Thank you to all the mem-bers who participated in these events. We are ex-cited about all of the upcoming activities and hope you plan to attend those as well.

The Board is still looking for a couple of volunteers who are interested in revitalizing our Junior Pro-gram and re-establishing our Jr Flag Officers. If you are interested or know of someone who may be interested please let us know.

A Letter from the President of the Ladies Auxiliary What a wonderful time we had at out February luncheon. After everyone purchased their 50/50 tickets and wrote their name on the ticket for the door prizes, they were greeted with complimentary Brandy Milk Punch. What a great way to start our Mardi Gras luncheon!

Since Valentine’s Day was just a few days away, Kathy Carboni gave a beautiful blessing about Love. For our new PCYC members, each February the Ladies Auxiliary honors the past kings and queens of the Bards of the Binnacle. PCYC’s very own version of Mardi Gras was first held in 1977. This year at Bards, we crowned King Neptune XXXVIX and Queen Neptuna XXXVIX – Chris Schmidt and Pokey Hans. The tradition has been carried on for quite a few years!

As our staff poured champagne for the toast, the names of those that were present were read: Mrs. Laurie Matkin (II), Mr. Tom Bourdin (III), Mrs. Monica Montagnet (X), Mrs. Peggy Cromwell (XXVIX), Mrs. Janet Gordon (XXIII), Mrs. Cheri Dillard (XXIV), Mrs. Marion Clerc Simpson (XXV), Mr. Robin Rafferty (XXIX), Mrs. Lise Lorber (XXIX), Mrs. Terry Scott (XXX), Mrs. Pattie Ryan (XXXI), Mr. Michael O’Dwyer (XXXIII), Ms. Sheryl Baltar (XXXIII), Mrs. Gwenn Voigts (XXXV) and Mrs. Mary Jane Christman (XXXVI).

A big Thank You to our wonderful staff for our wonderful meal. And to Chris, thank you for the very delicious KING CAKE you made for our desert.

Congratulation to the winners of our door prizes – Sandy Byrne, Nancy McCardell and Marylee Kammer. The winner of the 50/50 was Margaret Harris.

Thank you to the February Hostesses: Stephanie Allen, Anita Lambert and Charlotte Lamb. I hope to see you all at our March 11th luncheon as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Junior News USODA Valentine’s Day Regatta was held at St. Petersburg Yacht Club on Feb 7-8, 2015. Claire Housey, Jonathan Schrantz and Sofia Diaz del Valle competed against 182 competitors from around the country. Once again, light winds appear to be the norm in opti sailing these days as the race committee was only able to complete two full sets of races for the entire event. Every race counts and every point counts…. Claire Housey dominated with a 7th place overall finish! She also captured the 2nd girl and 4th place in Blue Fleet. Congratulations Claire! Jonathan also had a great regatta finishing 36/182 and Sofia was 30th overall in girls. Jonathan and Claire both finished in the Top 25%, which qualifies them to participate in USODA Team Trials in May. Boyd Housey also competed in Valentine’s Day Regatta in the Laser Radial division. Luckily, the Laser sails are larger than optis and grab more wind. After four races competing against 40 com-petitors, Boyd finished 11th overall. Great job Boyd!

Mardi Gras Regatta was the weekend of Feb 21-22, at NOYC and there were a total of ten optimists that signed up for the event. Finally, heavy winds (20+ mph) showed up on Saturday. Unfortu-nately for some, those heavy winds wreaked havoc causing boats to flip around the race course. Sunday it was back to normal with light, shifty winds. After eleven races, Michael Burns racked up pulling out a 1st place overall, 1st place Blue fleet, and Top Junior award. Claire finished 2nd overall and 2nd in Blue fleet. Jonathan was 3rd overall and 1st in Red Fleet while Sofia was 2nd in White Fleet. Congratulations to our opti sailors for their success this weekend and for their year round dedication to sailing! PCYC is very proud of you.

MICHAEL BURNS SAILS IN SPAIN Michael had the privilege of being invited to sail in the XXVI Trofeu Vila de Palamos 10th Nations Cup with Team USA, February 12-15, 2015. This event is the largest re-gatta in Spain and the second largest regatta in the World with a record 544 sailors from 22 countries attending this year. Team USA Palamos consisted of eleven boys and 4 girls from New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida, California, Texas and Mississippi.

The adventure started with a night in Barcelona, sightseeing, and a tour of La Sagrada Familia (The Holy Family) Catholic Church. The team then drove an hour up the Medi-terranean Coast to a beautiful little town called Palamos. Four days prior to the re-gatta, the USA sailors had a very regimented schedule starting with a 3 mile jog, fol-lowed by team breakfast, then off to rig their boats, chalk talk with the coaches, on the water training, team meeting, team dinner, homework and 9pm curfew.

Racing began on Friday, February 13th and they divided the sailors into 4 groups of about 136 each, the largest starting line any of our kids have ever experienced. Mi-chael did manage to pull a bullet (1st place) in the first race of the event! After the ini-tial race, huge waves and heavy winds took over in race 2 & 3. He said it was basically survival mode for him trying not to flip and just finish the race. Day 2 brought zero wind and Day 3 was very light only allowing for one race. Michael finished 85 out of 544 sailors which put him in the top 15%. Overall, it was an amazing experience. He made new friends from around the USA and Europe, traded gear, sailed on the Mediterra-nean Sea, learned a new culture, and got another stamp on his passport!

Long Range Planning Update The Long-Range Planning Committee has identi-fied numerous areas of potential improvement we feel will add value and convenience to your mem-bership. We have looked at reworking existing fa-cilities as well as offering additional services. You will soon receive a short survey by email soliciting your input. (If you do not currently have an email address on file, we ask that you please update your records and add one.) Once we have com-piled the survey results, we will prepare a priori-tized display of projects to be posted in the club. After an extended period to allow for member re-view and input, the list will be submitted to the board for consideration. If at any time, you have questions, feel free to contact me or any member of the committee. A list of committee members is available in the office.

Bards of the Binnacle The Club was quite a site on February 7th as Bards of the Binnacle got underway. People of all ages in a variety of costumes ranging from the 20’s to present day, lined the walkway to see and greet the reigning royalty. This year King Neptune, Chris Schmidt, rolled through the crowds in his ‘chariot’ acknowledging his subjects. Queen Neptuna, Pokey Hans, was not far behind as she had just arrived from Egypt. The maids did a great job on their costumes and the crowds could not be more pleased. Jaws was on the loose while Catniss was trying to survive and keep her people safe. Decorations were scattered throughout the club making the patrons feel they were part of the entire movie experience, complete with candy and popcorn. Everyone danced the night away to the won-derful band, the Fantastic New Groove Band, who had songs that appealed to the entire crowd. This is a party that is not to be missed. Ask anyone who was lucky enough to be a part of it this year. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for next year because it is going to come early, January 30th, 2016. Make this the first thing on your 2016 calendar. Plans are already underway. Be there or be square!
