• Texas politician, philanthropist, and inventor (Borden condensed milk)

• Advocated to establish schools for both white and African American children

• Gave his fortune to support churches, students, teachers, and missionaries

• Advocated for people in need around the world

• First American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 for all her humanitarian efforts

Characteristics of Advocates

Advocates share many positive characteristics and act in similar ways

Fact Finders: They thoroughly research issues and try to deal objectively with their own related prejudices and preferences

Individualists: They avoid getting caught up in group thinking and make their own decisions based on information; they are polite but committed

Good Listeners: They hear what others are saying and communicate their understanding of what is being said and felt

Persevere: They are determined advocates; they are polite while remaining firmly committed to the cause

Credible: They understand the need for being trustworthy, honest, and sensitive to all involved

Communicators: They are able to clearly and persuasively articulate their point of view

Goal: To build a clean water system for citizens of the Songa region in Burundi, Africa.

Why is clean water access important?

• Prevents deadly diseases

• Allows children time to go to school and women time to go to work

• Helps prevent deformities

• Keeps women and children safe from dangerous trek

• Every 20 seconds a child dies somewhere in the world from a waterborne illness

• 884 million people lack access to clean water - that’s almost 3x the population of the USA
