INTRODUCTIONThe AccuNav Sport™ is a high quality, big screen hand-held GPS receiver with performance that is second tonone in its class. Using menu features and raised soft-key operation, the AccuNav Sport™ is also one of theeasiest to use products that Eagle has ever built. Thewide screen shows the navigation and plotter screenswith high resolution and detail. The display and key-board are also lighted for night operation.

The electronics are sealed inside the welded, dry nitro-gen filled case. This both waterproofs the unit and helpsprevent fogging on the display. The battery compart-ment has "O" ring seals to keep water penetration to aminimum.

GPS - HOW IT WORKSThe Global Positioning System (GPS) is perhaps thebest approach to navigation that has ever been devised.Conceived by the Department of Defense (DOD) andthe United States military, the GPS system is an answerto their needs of 24 hour global positioning, 365 days ayear.

Basically, the system works by using a constellation ofsatellites orbiting Earth 11,000 miles in space. There willbe 24 satellites in orbit when the system is fully opera-tional. When all satellites are in place, at least four ofthem will be in view nearly anywhere on Earth twenty-four hours a day. The GPS receiver requires at leastthree satellites to give a “2D” fix. (A 2D fix is your positionin latitude/longitude. A 3D fix is your latitude/longitudeplus altitude.) When it locks on to at least four satellites,it displays a 3D fix. It takes three satellites to determine position.

more precise system is coding. In other words, the datacoming from the satellites is encrypted. Civilian GPSreceivers use “C/A Code.” Its accuracy is intentionallyworse than the military’s “P Code.” In this manner,civilian users worldwide can benefit from excellent po-sition fixes. Meanwhile, the military keeps the mostaccurate system away from potential enemies. Theo-retically, C/A code can give accurate position fixes up to15 meters. This is more than adequate for most people.

However (as of this writing), the military isn’t satisfiedwith C/A’s potential accuracy in the hands of the world.So, it’s degrading it further with “Selective Availability” orSA. This is small, random errors intentionally added tothe system so your accuracy will typically be within 100meters. Of course, accuracy also depends on the angleof the satellite above the horizon, signal-to-noise ratio,the number of satellites tracked at one time (the more

As the receiver locks on to each satellite, it calculatesthe distance from the satellite by measuring the lengthof time it takes the radio signal to reach it. Each satellitehas an extremely accurate clock that tells the receiverwhen the radio transmission started. The receiver com-pares that time against its own clock, thus it knows howlong it took the radio signal (travelling at the speed oflight!) to reach it. If you know time and speed, then youcan calculate distance. Once you have this from threesatellites, then the receiver can determine your posi-tion.

ACCURACYYou may have heard tales of extraordinary accuracyfrom GPS receivers. The DOD requires accuracy of 10to 15 meters from the satellite system. However, onlythe military gets this precision. The way the militarykeeps us and other unauthorized people from using the

the better), and other factors. The smallest ranges onthe plotter may not be usable if the SA is high. Thepresent position symbol can move off the screen evenwhile you’re sitting still.

Don’t let this discourage you. GPS by nature has muchfaster updates than other systems (such as Loran), andtypically is much easier to use. Accuracy, even with SAon is still better than most other navigation systems.You’ve purchased one of the finest navigation instru-ments on the market today. We hope you’ll enjoy it formany years to come.

The EAGLE™ GPS ReceiverThe Rockwell GPS engine is currently used in all Eagle™GPS receivers. It’s small, rugged, and fast. The fivechannel design lets it track all satellites in view. It sendsposition information to the AccuNav Sport™ from onceevery second to once every five seconds (user select-able.) ANTI-SKIDThe AccuNav Sport™ has a recess molded into theback of the case and one-half of a plastic fastenerattached to the recess. When used with the other half ofthe fastener, it keeps the unit from sliding on a levelsurface such as a dashboard.

To use the anti-skid material, first remove the fastenerfrom the literature pack supplied with the AccuNavSport™. Select the location for this fastener and peel theplastic backing from this half and press it onto themounting surface. Align this patch with the one on theAccuNav Sport™, then press them together. It will holdthe unit under mild vibration, keeping it from sliding.

NOTE: The adhesive anti-skid patch is not designed tohold the AccuNav Sport™ on a vertical or overheadsurface. It is only to be used to keep the unit from slidingon a flat, horizontal surface.

EXTERNAL POWERThe AccuNav Sport™ uses six AA batteries or (usingthe optional CA-1 adapter cable) 6 to 35 volts DC froman external power source. To use external power (suchas a car's cigarette lighter), simply push the CA-1's pluginto the small connector on the side of the AccuNavSport™. Plug the other end of the CA-1 into the vehicle'scigarette lighter, and the AccuNav Sport is ready for use.(Note: A rubber plug comes with the AccuNav Sport tocover the external power jack on the side of the unitwhen it's not in use.)

BATTERY INSTALLATIONThe AccuNav Sport™ requires six AA batteries.We recommend DuraCell™ alkaline batteries, butother brands will work. You can use lithium batter-ies which will last longer than alkaline batteries.Rechargeable ni-cad batteries will also work in theAccuNav Sport™, however they won't last as longas alkalines. Do Not use heavy-duty batteries orany battery other than the ones listed above. Do notmix different types of batteries. (e.g. ni-cads andalkalines)To install the batteries, first turn the AccuNavSport™ so that it is facing you. Now grasp thebottom part of the case and push it to the right untilit comes completely off the unit as shown at right.The bottom part of the AccuNav Sport™ housesthe battery pack.

Now push the battery pack out the bottom of the batterycover as shown at right. Install the batteries with thenegative end (-) toward the springs. The positive end (+)should be firmly against the metal plate. When all sixbatteries are installed in the battery pack, slide it into thebattery cover.

If the battery holder sticks when sliding it into the batterycover, apply a thin film of petroleum jelly to the "O" ringson the battery holder.

Slide the battery pack onto the unit and the AccuNavSport is now ready for use.

Notice!There is a tab on the top of the battery holder thataligns with a slot on the top of the battery cover. Makecertain the tab is aligned properly! Otherwise thebattery holder won't slide all the way into the coverand the battery cover won't slide onto the unit.

Vari-Power™ Battery Saver FeatureThe AccuNav Sport™ has a five-level power savingfeature that can extend the life of the batteries consid-erably. It does this by changing the update rate of theGPS receiver inside the unit. When you first turn theAccuNav Sport on, the update rate is once per second.In other words, the GPS receiver calculates and sendsyour position to the display once per second. You canlengthen this time to as little as once every five seconds.The longer the update rate, the less power is drawn fromthe batteries. For example, less power is drawn from thebatteries when the unit is in the five second update ratethan the one second rate. There can be exceptions tothis rule, however. Whenever the AccuNav Sport istrying to lock onto the satellites, it automatically goesinto the one second update mode. If you are walking ina wooded area with the unit set on the five secondupdate mode, the unit may lose its lock on the satellites

due to the trees overhead. When this happens, the unitautomatically goes into the one second update modeuntil it locks onto the satellites. Then it returns to the fivesecond mode. If you are walking through heavy treecoverage with only occasional gaps in the trees, the unitmay remain in the one second update mode continu-ously. Typically, however, the AccuNav Sport™ willconsume less power with higher update rates undernormal conditions.

Although there is no indicator on the navigation orplotter displays to show which update mode you are in,watching the clock can show you the current mode. Alldisplays, including the clock are updated at the sametime. If you have it set for a three second update, thenthe clock will "freeze" for three seconds, then show thecorrect time, then "freeze" for three seconds and so on.

Also note that the AccuNav Sport™ automatically goesinto the one second update rate whenever externalpower is applied to the unit. For example, if the CA-1cigarette lighter adapter cable is plugged into theAccuNav Sport and the other end is plugged into yourcar's cigarette lighter, then the update rate will automati-cally switch to theone second update.

To adjust the updaterate, turn the unit onby pressing the ONkey. Next, press theMENU key, then theF5 key which corre-sponds to the"CHANGE GPSSETTINGS" label.

Now press the right arrow key to see the second menuscreen. The screen shown on the previous page ap-pears. Press the F1 key which corresponds to the"POWER SAVING SETUP" label. A screen similar to theone below appears.

The update rate cur-rently in use showsat the bottom of thescreen. This one iscurrently using theone second update.To change it, simplypress the key corre-sponding to the de-sired update rate.For example, tochange to a four sec-

ond rate, press the F4 key. The update rate changes toonce every four seconds and the display at the bottomof the screen will show "CURRENTLY USING: 4 SEC."To exit this screen, press the CLR key.

LOW BATTERY INDICATORWhen the battery voltage reaches six volts, a lowbattery message appears in the lower left corner of thedisplay. If you are using alkaline batteries, and the unitis in the one second update mode, then you will haveapproximately 15 minutes or less until the unit auto-matically shuts off. If you have the unit in the fivesecond update mode, you will have approximately 45minutes or less until the unit shuts off.

Note:In cold weather, keep a spare set of batteries in a warmplace, such as a shirt pocket. Warm batteries lastconsiderably longer than cold ones.

ANTENNAThe AccuNav Sport™ has a removable antenna thatfolds over the display when the unit is not in use. To openthe antenna, simply lift on an edge of the antenna andraise it to the desired angle.

Two thumbscrews on the antenna's hinge let you adjustthe tension on the antenna. This helps keep the antennain the desired position. The thumbscrews work in oppo-site directions. To tighten the right thumbscrew, rotate itaway from the display. To tighten the left thumbscrew,rotate it toward the display.

Caution - Always make certain the left thumbwheel istight when using the AccuNav Sport™. The connectorfor the antenna is inside the left thumbwheel. If it isn'ttight, a poor connection may occur. This can prevent theAccuNav Sport™ from operating properly, if at all.

To remove the antenna, simply loosen the thumbwheelsuntil they won't turn. Carefully remove the antenna fromthe unit by pulling it straight out. If you feel any resis-tance, make certain the thumbwheels are at the end oftheir travel. Don't force any parts.

Once you remove the antenna, you can see it's connec-tor inside the left-hand thumbwheel. When reinstallingthe antenna, align the left side of the antenna first, thenthread left thumbwheel until it engages the connector.This will require two full turns of the thumbwheel. Afteryou've accomplished this, thread the right side of theantenna by rotating the right thumbwheel. Remember torotate the right thumbwheel in the opposite directionfrom the left.

Adjust thumbwheels until the desired tension is achieved.Caution - Do not overtighten the thumbwheels.

ANTENNA ANGLEWhen using the AccuNav Sport™, try to make certainthe antenna is parallel with the ground, or nearly so asshown at right. Since the signals from the satellites are"line of sight", a flat antenna gives you a better chanceof being able to receive the signals from all of theavailable satellites.

Also, trees, buildings, carports (even your body), canblock the signals from the satellites. When using thisunit in heavy brush or timber, remember that it may losetrack on one or all of the satellites until you move into aclearing.

We have successfully used the AccuNav Sport™ incars and trucks since the satellite's signal passes throughglass. However, antenna placement can make a differ-ence in receiving the signals or not.

KEYBOARDThe keyboard has the main group of keys arranged inthree horizontal rows, plus four arrow keys at the top.The keys are used to enter numbers, make menuselections and activate the windows feature. The menukey near the bottom left corner of the keyboard activatesthe first menu page.

WIN - This key gives you access to the windows mode,which has many combination displays.

POS - Press this key to show the Position Screen.

STR - Press this key to show the Steering Screen.

PLOT - This key gives access to the Plotter.

RTE - Pressing this key shows the route planning menu.

ENT - (Enter) Press this key to accept keyboard entry.

CLR - (Clear) This key clears menus and erases entriesfrom the screen.

ARROW KEYS - These keys are used to make menuselections and to move objects on the screen.

ON - The ON key turns the AccuNav Sport™ on. It alsocontrols the lights. Pressing the ON key again afterturning the unit on turns the lights on. Press it a third timeand the lights are turned off.

WPT - Pressing this key lets you save or recall awaypoint.

ICON - To mark a location on the plotter screen, use thisfeature.

CNTR - Pressing this key centers your position on theplotter.

ZIN & ZOUT - These keys let you "zoom-in" or "zoom-out" the plotter display.

OFF - Press and HOLD the Off key to turn the AccuNavSport™ off.

MENU - Press this key to show the menus and gainaccess to most functions.

NOTE:The keys labeled F1 through F0 are used to selectmenu items and enter numbers. For example, to enterthe number "495", you should press F4, then F9, andfinally F5.

TURNING POWER ONTo turn the AccuNav Sport™ on, simply press the "ON"key. (Note: The "ON" key is harder to press than theother keys. This makes it harder to turn the AccuNavSport™ on accidentally.) A screen similar to the oneshown below appears.

To turn the lights on,press the F5 key. Toadjust the displaycontrast, press the leftarrow key to lightenthe screen, the rightarrow key darkens it.

To clear the display,press the CLR key.

MENUSMost of the AccuNav Sport's™ features are found onpages of "menus". Pressing the MENU key lets you viewthe menus. This unit has four basic displays. They are:Windows, Position, Steering, and Plotter. When youpress the MENU key, different menus appear depend-ing on the displaymode the unit is in.(Except the plotterand steering displaysshare the samemenus.) In otherwords, if you press theMENU key while theposition screen isshowing, the menushown at right ap-pears. However, if you

press the menu key while the plotter is displayed, adifferent menu appears as shown below. This gives youthe features specific to each display without having tosearch through many pages of menus.

Unless otherwise specified, all menu examples used inthis manual are ac-cessed while the po-sition or steeringscreen is showing.

More information onmenus are shown inthe back of thismanual.

Initialization - Power OnIn order for the AccuNav Sport™ to lock onto thesatellites, it must first find them. If you simply turn the uniton and wait, the unit will find the satellites by itself in 15minutes or less. This is called “Cold Start.” If you let it findthe satellites, the time display will probably be wrong,since it will be showing UTC time which is the time atGreenwich, England. However, all other navigationdisplays, including the position display will be correct.(You can set the time display to your local time.) Tospeed up the satellite acquisition process, you caninitialize the AccuNav Sport™ or “tell it where it is” thefirst time it’s turned on. This initialization process isusually done only once and requires the following data:

1. Approximate present position in latitude/longitude2. Approximate elevation above sea level (altitude)3. Today’s date and time

The unit usually only takes a few minutes or less to findthe satellites once it’s been initialized by the user.

After the batteries are installed and the antenna isopened, press the ON key, then press the MENU key.Now press the key next to the “CHANGE GPS SET-TINGS” label. Finally,press the key next tothe “SET LAT, LON,ALT, TIME, DATE”label. The screenshown at right ap-pears.

This is the GPS setup screen. The settings now in useare shown at the top of the display. If you’re using theunit for the first time, these settings are probably wrongfor your position and time. To change any of the num-bers on this display, first press an up or down arrow keyto move the black box to the desired label. For example,to change the localtime, press the downarrow key until theblack box is on the“LOCAL TIME”,press the F6 key,then enter your timeusing the numberedkeys.

CHANGE POSITIONTo change the position shown on the AccuNav Sport'sdisplay, first determine your approximate position. Usea chart or call your local airport to determine yourposition if you don’t know it. The latitude/longitude thatyou enter doesn’t have to be extremely accurate. Typi-cally, if you enter a position within a few degrees of yourpresent position, the AccuNav Sport™ should quicklyfind your actual latitude/longitude. To change yourpresent position, first move the black box to the LATI-TUDE display, then press the F6 key to change it. Thescreen shown at right appears. Use the down arrow keyto change the “N” to “S”, if necessary. Next, simply enteryour present latitude using the numbered keys. Noticethat the position entered is in degrees, minutes, andhundredths of a minute. (Not seconds!) If you make amistake, press the left or right arrow keys to move to thenumber in the latitude that needs changing. After the

latitude has been entered, press the ENT key.

Now move the black box to the LONGITUDE display.Enter your present longitude within a degree. Use the upor down arrow keys to switch to east or west longitude,if necessary. Now enter the longitude using the num-bered keys. Be cer-tain to enter a zero“0” as the first num-ber in the longitude ifit’s less than 100 de-grees! After you’veentered the last num-ber, press the ENTkey.

CHANGE ALTITUDETo enter your present altitude, move the black box to theALTITUDE display, then press the F6 key. The AccuNavSport™ needs to know your elevation above sea level.(Not your height above the ground.) Again, an approxi-mation within a few thousand feet is usually sufficient.Use the numbered keys to enter your altitude data.Press the up arrow key if your altitude is below sea level.For example, suppose you’re in Death Valley and thespot you’re standing in is 35 feet below sea level. Youwould need to enter the numbers “35”, then press the uparrow key to change it to -35 feet. Press the ENT keywhen you’re done.

CHANGE TIMETo change the local time (the time at your position),move the black box to the LOCAL TIME display, thenpress the F6 key. The screen shown at right appears.

Use the number keys to enter the time. Press the uparrow key to change the time from AM to PM or the downarrow key to change from PM to AM. Press the ENT keywhen you’re finished.

CHANGE DATETo enter today’s date,move the black boxto the LOCAL DATEdisplay, then pressthe F6 key. Thescreen shown on thenext page appears.Enter the date usingthe numbered keys.When you’re finished,press the ENT key.

The numbers at the top of the screen should be correct.If they aren’t, press the key next to the label that youneed to change. If everything is correct, press the keynext to the “EXIT” label. The unit will switch to theposition screen and start searching for the satellitescurrently in view. The AccuNav Sport™ should find thesatellites and show aposition in a few min-utes.

COLD STARTWhen the AccuNav Sport™ is turned on for the first time“out of the box”, it automatically sends a “cold start”message to the GPS receiver. You can also send a coldstart message to the receiver at any time.

If the unit can’t lock on to the satellites using the datayou’ve given it, or if it has trouble finding the satellites,perhaps it is using the wrong data. This can happen ifyou’ve entered the wrong data by accident. For ex-ample, giving it east longitude instead of west. Or ifyou’ve moved a long distance with the unit turned off.The unit will automatically issue a cold start to it'sinternal GPS receiver, however, you can send a coldstart at any time.

To send a cold start message to the receiver, press theMENU key. Now press the key next to the “CHANGE

GPS SETTINGS” label. Finally, press the key next to the“GPS “COLD” START” label. The unit will begin a coldstart technique to find the available satellites. It shouldlock on to them in 15 minutes or less. Remember, whenit does, your local time and possibly date display willprobably be wrong. Use the method shown previously toset the time and dateto their proper localsettings. Once this isdone, an internalclock will keep thecorrect time, evenwhen the unit is turnedoff. The GPS systemupdates this clockwhen the unit islocked on to the sat-ellites.

POSITION/NAVIGATION DISPLAYSThe AccuNav Sport™ has a position screen, plotter,steering indicator, and a satellite information screen.These displays were designed to show the most impor-tant data. However, using the Windows feature, manymore screens are available that show navigation infor-mation in various arrangements. See the Windowssection for more detail.

IMPORTANT! If the data shown in digital numbers on any screen onthis unit is flashing, then it means that data is invalid. DONOT RELY ON THAT DATA IF IT IS FLASHING! Forexample, if the position display is flashing, then the unithas lost the satellites and hasn’t reacquired them. Theposition that is flashing is your last known position, notyour present position!

SATELLITE INFORMATION SCREENThe satellite information screen shows technical dataabout each satellite in view. The AccuNav Sport™ hasa five parallel channel GPS receiver. Data on eachchannel is shown at the top of the display. The channelsare numbered one through five on the left side of thescreen. Every satellite in the constellation has a numberassigned to it, called the PRN. The PRN is the firstnumber in the channel’s row. TRK stands for “track.” Ifit's tracking the satellite, then a “T” is placed in thiscolumn. If the AccuNav Sport™ is searching for thesatellite, then a “S” appears. ELV is the elevation(height) of the satellite above the horizon from yourposition. AZM is the azimuth or direction of the satellitefrom your position. For example, if the azimuth of asatellite is 180 degrees, then it is due south of yourposition. SNR is the signal-to-noise ratio. This tells youhow strong the satellite’s signal is. The higher the SNR

number, the better. Typical good SNR numbers arebetween 30 and 50.

The satellites that are visible in the sky from yourposition are shown in the lower right corner of the screenunder the “VISIBLE SATS”.In the lower left cor-ner of the screen arethe DOPS displays.These show you the“Dilution Of Precision”(DOP) for the horizon-tal (HDOP), geomet-ric (GDOP), position(PDOP), time(TDOP), and vertical(VDOP). The GDOPis the combination

value of HDOP, VDOP, and TDOP. The smaller theGDOP’s number is, the better. The GPS receiver se-lects satellites based on GDOP, therefore it always triesto use satellites that have good DOP values. Thesedepend on the azimuth and elevation of the satellite,and any ground based obstructions.

Remember, the smaller the number - the better on all ofthe DOPs.

POSITION SCREENThe position screen automatically appears after theAccuNav Sport™ is initialized or you can view thisscreen at any time by pressing the POS key. Theposition display shows your present position (POSI-TION), bearing (BRG), course over ground (COG), localtime, cross track error (XTE), time to go to waypoint(TTG), and waypoint name (WPT NAME).

Your present position shows near the top of the screenin latitude/longitude coordinates. This is shown in de-grees, minutes, and thousandths of a minute. For ex-ample, on this page, the present position is 36 degrees,8.987 minutes north latitude and 95 degrees, 50.553minutes west longitude. Below the present position onthe left side is theBearing to Waypoint(BRG) display. This isexpressed in degreestrue or magnetic, de-pending on the modethe AccuNav Sport™is in. To the right ofthe Bearing is theCourse Over Ground(COG) display. At thebottom of the screen

are the Local Time and Cross Track Error Displays.Please note that you must recall a waypoint to use theBearing and Cross Track Error displays.

STEERING SCREENThe steering screen shows a pictorial view of yourvehicle and course travelled. This is called a CourseDeviation Indicator or CDI. It also shows Distance ToGo (DTG), Speed Over Ground (SOG), Bearing toWaypoint (BRG), and Course Over Ground (COG).Press the STEER key to view this screen.

Your present position is shown by the arrow. The arrowshows the direction your vehicle is heading relative tothe waypoint. In theory, if you steer with the arrowalways pointing towards the waypoint, then you willarrive at the waypoint. The solid line extending from thearrow is your track or path you’ve taken. To travel

directly to a waypoint, try to keep the arrow on the centerline. The waypoint is depicted by a box at the top of theCDI display. As you approach the waypoint, the arrowand the box will move closer together. If you travel pastthe waypoint, the waypoint’s box will move to the bottomof the display.

The numbers on thetop left side of thescreen are distancemarkers, showing theremaining distance tothe recalled waypoint.If the numbers have ablack box surround-ing them, then the dis-tance markers areshowing the distance

PAST the waypoint. In other words, if the numbers aresurrounded by a black box, then you have passed thewaypoint and need to turn around.

The numbers immediately below the CDI are the CDIrange limits in miles. This gives you an idea of how faroff course you are. For example, if the arrow is halfwaybetween the course line and the outside left line and theCDI range is 0.5 miles, then your cross track error is tothe left 0.25 miles. The CDI range is the same as the CDIalarm setting. See the section on GPS alarms to changethe CDI range.

Using the digital displays at the bottom of the screenwith the graphical display at the top lets you accuratelysteer to a waypoint.

CUSTOMIZE SCREENSThe digital displays on the bottom half of the positionand steering screens, plus all of the digital displays onthe plotter screen can be changed as desired. To showhow this is done, we’ll use the position screen as anexample.

To customize the po-sition screen, firstmake certain the po-sition screen is dis-played. Next, pressthe MENU key. Thefirst GPS menu ap-pears. Press the F1key which corre-sponds to the“CHANGE POSITION

To change another digital display, press the left or rightarrow key. The label in the next digital display boxchanges as you press the arrow key. Again, press the upor down arrow key to change the display.

When you have the display arranged as desired, pressthe CLEAR key. This“locks” the display.Every time you switchto this display, it willappear as you de-signed it, unless youpreset the unit.

The black box identifies the Bearing box as “ready forchange.” To change the Bearing display to a differentone, press the up or down arrow keys to select thedisplay that you want to show inside the box.In this example, we changed the Bearing display to DTG(Distance To Go) by pressing the up arrow key twice.(See the position screen below.)

PLOTTERThe plotter lets you see your course and direction oftravel on the screen. If you’ve recalled a waypoint, theplotter shows your starting location, present position,and destination. However, you do not have to recall awaypoint to use theplotter.

The plotter also canshow grid lines on thedisplay. These gridlines show latitudeand longitude linesthat can help you seeyour position or thelocation of other ob-jects.

To use the plotter, simply press the PLOT key. A screensimilar to the one at the bottom of the previous pageappears.

The flashing cross is your present position. The solidline is your current track, or path you have just traveled.The large square is a compass rose marked with North,South, East, and West. The square’s height and widthshows at the bottom of the screen. This is the distancefrom one side to the other and from the top to the bottom.Your present position is shown at the top of the screen.

If your present position starts to move outside thesquare, the AccuNav Sport™ clears the display, thenredraws your present position closer to the center of thescreen. Your present position will always be displayedon the plotter. To clear the plotter screen, see the PlotterMenus section.

On the left side of the screen are the Distance To Go(DTG), Speed Over Ground (SOG), Bearing (BRG), andCourse Over Ground (COG) digital displays. All of thesedisplays are only used when a waypoint is recalled,except COG and ALT which are always active. Thesedisplays also can be customized. See the Plotter Menussection for more detail.

PLOTTER CURSORThe plotter cursor can help you determine the latitude/longitude of a waypoint or event marker. To use it, pressthe up or down arrow key while the plotter is displayed.A screen similar to the one on the next page appears.Two new lines appear on the screen. These are theplotter cursor lines. Also, the present position display atthe top of the screen switches to show the latitude/longitude position of the plotter cursor - not your presentposition. The distance and bearing from your present

position to the cursor position show in the bottom leftcorner of the display. Use the arrow keys to move thecursor lines anywhere on the plotter. To erase thecursor lines, press the CLEAR key. This will switch thedisplay at the top of the screen back to your presentposition and erase the distance and bearing displays atthe bottom of thescreen.

PLOTTING WITH A WAYPOINTUsing the plotter with a recalled waypoint or route is aneasy way to see the distance and direction you trav-elled. It also simplifies navigation. To use the plotter inthis manner, first recall a waypoint or start a route. (Seethe Waypoint Recall section for more information.) Thenpress the PLOT key.A screen similar tothe one at right ap-pears.

The circle with the “S”is your starting loca-tion. This was yourposition when yourecalled the way-point. The flashingcircle with a cross is

your present position. The “flag” with a number inside isthe destination (recalled waypoint). The number insidethe flag is the recalled waypoint number. In this ex-ample, waypoint number 1 is the destination. The dottedline is the shortest, most direct course from the startingpoint to the destination. Follow this line to get to thewaypoint.

An arrival alarm can be set to sound a tone when youcome within a preset distance to the destination. See thesection on alarms for more information about the arrivalalarm.

PLOTTER MENUSPressing the MENU key while the plotter is showinggives you a new set of menus that relate only to theplotter. There are two plotter menus. The first menu isshown at right.

SET RANGEPress the F1 key to see the plotter's range menu. (Seethe screen at the top of the next page.) This menuchanges the plotter’s range or distance across theplotter’s display. Therange is one (1) milewhen the AccuNavSport™ is turned onfor the first time. Theavailable plotterranges are .1, .2, .5,1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50,100, 500, and 1000miles. This lets you“zoom in” to see smallvariations in your

course or “zoom out”to see your startingposition, present po-sition, track, course,and destination.NOTE: An easierway to change theplotter's range is tosimply press the ZINkey to "zoom-in" orthe ZOUT key to"zoom-out".

CLEAR PLOTTo clear or erase the solid track line from the screen,use the Clear Plot menu selection. The plotter willcontinue to draw your track after the F2 key is pressed,starting from your present position.

SAVE PLOT TRAILThe AccuNav Sport™ can save up to five (5) plottertrails. Saving plot trails makes it easier to follow an oldpath to a destination. Simply save your current trail, thenrecall it later to use as a guide. Every time you turn theAccuNav Sport™ off, it saves your current trail on thescreen. To save it un-der a number that youcan recall later, firstpress the MENU keywhile the plotter is dis-played. Now press theF3 key. The menushown at right ap-pears. Now press thekey next to the desiredtrail number. For ex-ample, if you wish to

save the trail currently displayed on the screen as plottrail number 1, simply press the F1 key. The AccuNavSport™ saves the current trail and returns to the plotterscreen. These trails are saved in memory and are noterased when the unit is turned off, but they are erasedwhen the unit is preset.

RECALL PLOTTRAILTo recall a plot trail,first press the MENUkey while the plotteris displayed. Pressthe F4 key (RecallTrail). The screenshown at right ap-pears. Simply pressthe key next to the

trail that you wish to recall. For example, to recall plottrail number three, press the F3 key. The AccuNavSport™ returns to the plotter screen and draws therecalled trail on the screen. Note that this recalled traildoesn't affect your current trail; both will be displayed.

Also note that the recalled plot trails are position spe-cific. In other words, the plot trail is not simply a linedrawn on the screen, it represents the location you werein when the plot trail was drawn.

ICON ON/OFFPressing the F5 key while the first plotter menu isdisplayed turns the icons off that you placed on thescreen using the ICON key. For more information on thisfeature, see the ICON section. This also turns off all ofthe waypoint icons.

PLOTTER UPDATE RATEThe plotter shows your track by drawing a solid linebehind your present position. This is called a plot trail.The trail is updatedonce every secondwhen the unit isturned on for the firsttime. However, ifyou’re travelling along distance, the trailline may end prema-turely due to the lim-ited number of dotsavailable that plot thetrail. To change the

update rate, press the MENU key while the plotter isdisplayed. Now press the right arrow key once. Finally,press the F3 (UPDATE RATE) key. The screen shownat left appears. Simply press the key corresponding tothe desired update time. The AccuNav Sport™ returnsto the plotter screen using the new time.

GOTO CURSORAs previously described, the cursor lines can be used toplace an icon or highlight a position. When you use thecursor lines, the position of the cross hairs on the displayare shown at the top of the screen. Pressing the keycorresponding to the “GOTO CURSOR” label on theplotter menu causesthe AccuNav Sport™to show navigationand steering data tothe position shown bythe cross hairs. Thisautomatically turnsthe arrival alarm on.

All of the navigation displays on the AccuNav Sport™will show navigation data to the location you marked.This includes the navigation, steering, and plotter dis-plays.

GRID LINESThe plotter can show latitude/longitude grid lines on theplotter as shown on the next page. To turn these lineson, press the MENU key while the plotter is displayed.

ICONSThe AccuNav Sport™ can place icons on the plotter tomark special locations. There are five different icons tochoose from and there are 100 of each icon for a total of500. You can place each icon individually, however, youhave to erase all of the icons in a group.

To place an icon, first press the ICON key. The screenshown below appears.

Now select one of the five icons shown on the left sideof the screen by pressing the key corresponding to thedesired icon. For example, to place the fish symbol,press the F1 key. Assoon as you press thekey, the AccuNavSport™ places theicon at your presentposition as shown onthe far right side ofthe next page. Thisicon always stays inthis location. It’ssaved in memory soit will always show on

Note that there are two different sets of symbols avail-able - land and marine. When the AccuNav Sport™ isturned on for the first time or after it's preset, the marineset of icons (shown on the previous page) is in use. Toswitch to the landicons, press the F6key. The screenshown at right ap-pears, giving you fiveother icon choices.

Using Icons with the CursorNormally, when you select an icon, it’s placed on theplotter at your present position. However, you can placean icon anywhere on the plotter using the cursor. To dothis, first press one of the arrow keys. This makes theplotter cursor lines appear on the display. Now move thelines to the desiredposition on the dis-play by pressing thearrow keys. When it’sat the desired loca-tion, press the ICONkey, then select anicon. The AccuNavSport™ places theicon at the intersec-tion of the plotter cur-sor lines.

Erasing the IconsAlthough you can place icons on the plotter individually,you can’t erase them one at a time. You have to erasethe whole group of icons. For example, if you’ve placed20 fish icons, erasingone erases all 20.

To erase an icon, firstpress the ICON key.Next, press the F0 key(DELETE ICONBANK) key. Thescreen shown at rightappears.

Now select the group of icons that you wish to erase bypressing the key corresponding to the desired icon.After pressing the key, the AccuNav Sport™ erases allof the selected icons from the plotter.

WINDOWSYou can change thedisplays on theAccuNav Sport by us-ing the windows fea-ture. This lets you usedifferent displays tosuit your own situa-tions. The screensavailable in the win-dows mode are di-vided into two or morewindows per screen.

Each screen of windows is called a “group”. The AccuNavSport gives you ten different window groups. Group “A”as shown on the previous page has the plotter, courseover ground, and steering displays showing in threeseparate windows. A group can have as many as fourwindows. A window can display digital GPS data, GPSsteering or navigationdisplays, and manymore. To use the win-dows feature, firstpress the WIN key.

A screen similar to theone shown at right ap-pears. The menu atthe bottom of thescreen lets you switchbetween the “pages”

of displays. These are lettered “A” through “J”. Group “A”shows first. Press the up arrow key to move forwardthrough the screens. Press the down arrow key to movebackward.

For example, pressing the up arrow key once shows thegroup “B” screen . Toexit the windowsmode, press the POS,PLOT, or STEERkeys. Many of thegroup screens can bemodified to some ex-tent. For example,press the MENU keywhile group “A” is dis-played. Four new la-bels appear on the

Three of these labels are window menus. Pressing thekey corresponding to one of the “window menu” labelsgives you a menu with functions that relate only to thatwindow. For example, if you press the F1 key whichcorresponds to the window menu label on the plotterwindow, the screen will clear and you will have thenormal plotter menu screen. To exit from a windowmenu, press the CLR key. The fourth label tells you topress the MENU key to see the windows main menu.

VIEWING WINDOWSTo see all of the available windows, press the WIN key,then press the MENU key twice. The windows mainmenu appears. Finally, press the F2 key (VIEW ALLWINDOWS). The screen shown at right appears.

The first window appears in the upper right corner of thescreen. A description of the screen shows in the box atthe bottom of the screen. Now press the F2 key. Thisswitches to the next window and description. Press theF1 key to view the previous window. When you’vefinished viewing the windows, press the CLR key.

WAYPOINT NAVIGATIONHOW TO SAVE A WAYPOINTWaypoints are locations on the earth’s surface that youwish to go or return to. Waypoints are useful for markingshipwrecks, hot fishing or hunting spots, hiking trails,and other locations. Storing waypoints in the AccuNavSport's memory makes it easy to return to any point inthe world by simply pressing a few buttons. The AccuNavSport can store up to 200 waypoints. You can store yourpresent position as a waypoint or enter latitude/longitudepositions as waypoint locations.

To save your present position as waypoint, simply pressthe WPT key. The screen shown below appears. Nowpress the F6 (WPT QUICK SAVE) key again. TheAccuNav Sport™ takes your present position and as-signs the first available waypoint number to it.

Saving PresentPosition - View andSave MethodThe “Quick Save” fea-ture doesn’t let youselect the waypointnumber. You have touse the next availablenumber when usingthat method. TheView and Savemethod lets you pick

the waypoint number that your present position is storedin. (Note: You can store a position under a waypointnumber that already has a position assigned to it usingthis method.) To save your present position, press theWPT key, then press the F2 (WPT SAVE) key. A screensimilar to the one below appears.

The first waypointnumber in the list ap-pears at the top of thepage. This is the num-ber that your presentposition will be storedunder. Your positionat the time youpressed the WPT keyis shown in the "CUR-RENT POSITION"

box in the middle of the screen. If you wish to save thelocation in the CURRENT POSITION box under thiswaypoint number, first press the F5 (USE CURRENTPOSITION) key. The position shown in the CURRENTPOSITION box also will show in the waypoint location atthe top of the screen. To save the waypoint withoutnaming it, simply press the F3 (SAVE) key.

To save the location under a different waypoint number,press the F1 (+ WPT) key to increase the waypointnumber (i.e. from waypoint number 1 to 2). Press the F2(- WPT) key to decrease the waypoint number. Nowpress the F5 key to use your present position. Finally,press the F3 key. This will store the location under thewaypoint number you selected. Press the CLR key toreturn to the last used position, plot, or navigationscreen.

Enter New WaypointTo save a location other than your present position, firstpress the WPT key. Next, press the F2 (WPT SAVE)key. Using the up and down arrow keys, move the blackbox down to the latitude/longitude position as shownbelow. Now press the F6 (CHANGE FIELD) key. Thescreen shown at thebottom of this pageappears. Use the ar-row keys to changethe “N” to a “S”, ifyour latitude is south.Now enter the loca-tion you wish to saveusing the numberedkeys. Use the leftarrow key as a back-space if you make a

mistake. In other words, pressing the left arrow keymoves the black box over the last number entered.Notice that the position entered is in degrees, minutes,and thousands of a minute. (Not seconds!) After you’veentered the latitude, press the ENT key. The waypointsave menu reappears with the black box on the longi-tude. Next, press theF6 key to change it.Now enter the longi-tude. Make certain toadd a zero to the lon-gitude if it’s less than100 degrees. For ex-ample, if the longitudeis 85 degrees, thenenter “085”. Press theENT key when you’vefinished. The save

waypoint menu appears with the position you entered inthe waypoint position box at the top of the screen. If thisposition is correct, press the F3 (SAVE) key. Press theCLR key to exit this screen.

Name a WaypointTo assign a name to awaypoint, first pressthe WPT key, thenpress the F2 key. Thescreen shown on theprevious page ap-pears. Select the way-point you wish toname by pressing theF1 or F2 keys until thedesired waypoint isshowing. Now move

the black box to the "NAME" and press the F6 key. Thescreen shown at left appears. Use the keys on bothsides of the screen to enter the waypoint name. Forexample, to name a waypoint “COVE 1”, press the F1key repeatedly until the letter “C” appears in the window.Next, press the right arrow key to move the black box tothe next letter position. Now press the F5 key repeatedlyuntil the “O” appears on the screen. Repeat this processuntil the entire name has been written on the screen.Now press the ENT key. The AccuNav Sport™ returnsto the waypoint save menu as shown above. To save thewaypoint with this name, first press the F3 key. Finally,press the CLR key to exit the waypoint save menu.

Erase a WaypointThe Waypoint Erase feature lets you erase waypointsfrom the list.

To erase a waypoint, first press the WPT key. Next,press the F2 key. Now press the F1 (+ WPT) or F2 (-WPT) key until the desired waypoint number appears onthe screen. Press the F4 key to erase the waypoint. Thescreen shown below appears. A message appears onthe screen that says “WAIT!! DELETE WAYPOINT AREYOU SURE?”. If youare certain this is thewaypoint that youwish to erase, pressthe F0 key. If not,press the F5 key.Pressing the F0 keyerases all informationfrom the waypointnumber that appearsat the top of thescreen.

To exit from the waypoint save menu, press the CLRkey.

RECALL A WAYPOINTYou must recall a waypoint in order to navigate to thatposition with the AccuNav Sport™. To recall a waypoint,first press the WPTkey, then press theF4 (WPT RECALL)key. The screenshown at right ap-pears.

If the desired waypoint isn't shown, press the F1 or F2keys until it appears on the screen. (Note: A faster wayto recall a waypoint is to press the F6 key, then enter thewaypoint number using the numbered keys.) When thedesired waypoint appears, simply press the F5 (GO TOWAYPOINT) key. The AccuNav Sport™ returns to thelast used position, steering, or plotter screen, showingnavigation data to the waypoint you recalled.

Note: The AccuNav Sport™ will show navigation data toa waypoint until the "Cancel Navigation" feature is used.This feature stops the unit from navigating. If you turnthe unit off while it is navigating, the next time it's turnedon it will still navigate to the previous waypoint. If youwere navigating in a route when you turned the AccuNav

Sport™ off, the next time you turn it on, the unit willremember where you were in the route at the time it wasturned off and resume navigation to the same waypointin the route.

ROUTESA route gives you the ability to navigate to severalwaypoints without having to reprogram the unit afterarriving at each one. A route consists of two or morewaypoints. When you start on a route, the AccuNavSport™ shows navigation information to the first way-point in the route. When you reach the first waypoint,(signalled by the Arrival Alarm), the AccuNav Sport™automatically sequences to the next waypoint. Naviga-tion information is shown to this waypoint and theprocess repeats. When you reach the last waypoint in aroute, the arrival alarm sounds until you turn it off. At thispoint you should use the "Cancel Navigation" feature tostop the AccuNav Sport™ from showing navigation datato the last waypoint in the route. Otherwise, it willcontinue to navigate to that waypoint, even if it's turnedoff and on again.

There are four steps required to create and follow aroute. First, you must create and name the route. Next,select the waypoints used in the route. Then determinethe starting waypoint. Next, tell the unit to follow theroute. Finally, the unit will ask you if you wish to run theroute forward or backward. After these steps are com-pleted, the AccuNav Sport™ will start showing naviga-tion data to the first waypoint on the route.

Waypoint SelectionIf you’ve named a route, the black box should be on the“0” at the top of the waypoint list on this screen as shownon the screen at right. If not, move the black box to the“0” using the up or down arrow keys. Now press the ENT

key. The screen shown on the next page appears. Nowpress the numbered key of the waypoint you wish to goto first in the route. For example, if you want waypointnumber 2 to be first, press the 2 key. If you’ve named thewaypoint, it shows in the blank space to the right of thewaypoint number.Next, press the ENTkey. The AccuNavSport™ reverts to themenu shown at right.

The cursor shouldnow be on the sec-ond waypoint line.Again, press the ENTkey and enter thewaypoint number forthe second waypoint

IMPORTANT!You must select waypoints in the order they are to beused in the route. In other words, suppose you want aroute that consists of waypoint numbers 1, 2, and 3.However, you wish to travel to 2 first, then 1, and finally

3. In this case, youmust enter waypoint2, 1, and 3 in thatorder when makingthe route.

Press the CLR key toexit this screen whenyou're finished.

FOLLOWING A ROUTETo follow a route, press the RTE key, then press the F2(RECALL ROUTE) key. The screen shown on the nextpage appears. Route number one appears on the rightside of the screen. The list of waypoints used in the routeare shown beneath the route number and name. If you

wish to recall a different route, press the F1 or F2 keysto cycle through the available routes.

After you’ve selected the desired route, you’ll notice ablack box surrounding the first waypoint in the route.This is the starting waypoint box. If you wish to start theroute using the firstwaypoint in the route,simply press the F4(START) key. How-ever, if you wish tostart the route usinga different waypoint,simply press thedown arrow key tomove the black boxto the desired way-point number. Thenpress the F4 key.

To follow a route backwards, press the F3 (REVERSE)key. For example, suppose you have three waypoints ina route and they’re numbered 2, 1, and 3. If you travelforward through the route, the unit will show navigationdata to waypoint number 2 first, then 1, and finally 3. Ifyou travel backward through the route, the unit will startwith waypoint number 3 first, then 1, and end withwaypoint number 2. No matter if you travel forward orreverse through the route, when you reach the lastwaypoint in the route, the arrival alarm sounds until youeither mute it or turn it off. Use the "Cancel Navigation"feature to stop the unit from navigating to the lastwaypoint in the route.

IMPORTANT!Turning the arrival alarm off prevents the AccuNavSport™ from sequencing to the next waypoint in theroute. This, in effect, turns the route off. The unit will stillshow navigation data to the current waypoint in theroute at the time the arrival alarm was turned off.

MODIFYING A ROUTEAny part of a route can be changed at any time. Forexample, suppose you have a route consisting of way-points number 2, 1, and 3 and you wish to changewaypoint number 3 to waypoint number 5. Simply pressthe RTE key, then press the F1 key. Route number oneappears on the rightside of the screen.The list of waypointsused in the route areshown beneath theroute number andname. If this isn't theroute you wish tochange, press the F1or F2 keys until thedesired route ap-pears.

Using the down arrow key, move the black box towaypoint number 3. Now press the ENT key. Use thenumbered keys to change the waypoint from 3 to 5.Next, press the ENT key. You’ve changed the waypointfrom 3 to 5. Press the F3 key to save the route. Press theCLR key to exit this screen. You can change anywaypoint used in a route, add or erase any waypoint, orchange the route name at any time using this method.

ERASING A ROUTETo erase a route, first press the RTE key. Next, press theF1 (SAVE/EDIT) key. Route number one appears on theright side of the screen. The list of waypoints used in theroute are shown beneath the route number and name.If you wish to erase a different route, press the F1 or F2keys to cycle through the available routes. After you’veselected the desired route, press the F4 (ERASE) key.This erases the route from memory. Finally, press the

CANCEL NAVIGATIONTo stop the AccuNav Sport™ from navigating to awaypoint or navigating to a waypoint in a route, press theMENU key twice. Now press the F3 (CANCEL NAVIGA-TION) key. This stops all navigation.

NOTE:Canceling navigation does not erase the route or anywaypoints from memory. It merely stops the AccuNavSport™ from navigating to waypoints.

ALARMSThe AccuNav Sport™ has two alarms. One is an arrivalalarm that sounds when you come within a presetdistance to a waypoint. The other is a cross track erroralarm that sounds when you move off course more than

the alarm’s setting. Both of these alarms are set identi-cally.

To adjust an alarm, first press the MENU key, then pressthe F4 (ALARMS) key. The screen shown below ap-pears. To turn any alarm on, press the key correspond-ing to the desiredalarm's label until theblack box moves to"ON", as we did on thearrival alarm on thescreen shown on thenext page. To changean alarm's setting,press the key corre-sponding to the de-sired alarm until theblack box moves over

the numbers on the right side. In the example shown onthe right side of this page, the arrival alarm is selected.

Now press the ENT key. The screen shown on the nextpage appears. The current alarm value shows in awindow on the screen which is labeled "OLD VALUE".

Use the numberedkeys to change thealarm's setting, thenpress the ENT key toaccept it. For ex-ample, to set the ar-rival alarm to 2 miles,press the 2 key, thenpress the 0 key twice.To set the arrivalalarm to .2 of a mile

as shown on the next page, press the 2 key, then pressthe 0 key. When the desired value has been entered,press the ENT key to accept it. The unit returns to theALARMS screen as shown on the right side of the nextpage. Notice that the alarm has automatically beenturned on. If an alarmis off, and you adjustit, the unit automati-cally turns it on.

NOTE: If you need toset an alarm to lessthan one (1), enter azero first. For ex-ample, to set the ar-rival alarm to .5 miles,press the followingnumber keys: 0 5 0.

You can return to this alarm screen at any time to adjusteither alarm, turn one off, or both of them on, as desired.Each alarm works and adjusts independently of theother. A descriptionof each alarm follows.

ARRIVAL ALARMThe arrival alarmsounds a tone whenyour position is withinthe alarm’s radius ofa waypoint. For ex-ample, the alarmsounds if you comewithin .1 mile of a re-

called waypoint if the arrival alarm’s setting is .1 mile.The alarm is adjustable from .01 to 9.99 miles.

XTE ALARMThe XTE (cross track error) alarm sounds a tone whenyour cross track error is greater than the alarm’s setting.Changing the XTEalarm also changesthe XTE range on thesteering screen. Thealarm is adjustablefrom 0.1 to 9.99 miles.

CHANGING GPS SETTINGSFor the fastest position acquisition, the AccuNav Sport™must be initialized when it’s turned on for the first time.This is described at the beginning of the GPS section inthis manual. However, if you wish to change only one ofthe parameters (such as time), press the MENU key,then press the F5“CHANGE GPS SET-TINGS” key. Finally,press the F1 “LAT,LON, ALT, TIME,DATE” key. Thescreen shown at rightappears.Using the menus onthis and followingmenu pages, you canchange the initial po-

sition, time, date, or altitude without affecting any otherinitialization setting. All of these menus work identicallyto the ones described in the initialization section at thebeginning of the GPS section. After you make a change,the unit returns to the GPS or plotter screen.

You may need to re-initialize the unit if you move a longdistance (over 100 miles) with the unit off. In this caseyou would need to enter a new initial position to help theAccuNav Sport™ find the correct satellites quicker.

GPS MODULE SELF-TESTThis feature tests the GPS module and returns a specialcode. This code is of interest only to the service depart-ment. The red (positive) and shield (ground)wires are power input (+6 to +35 VDC) to the AccuNavSport™. If the red wire is not used, tape its end so thatit cannot short. The white and green wires are for aNMEA interface and/or a DGPS beacon receiver. TheAccuNav Sport sends data to another electronic naviga-tion devices through the white wire and receives datafrom a beacon receiver through the green wire. SELECT NMEAThe AccuNav Sport sends data out the white wire on theoptional NMEA cable according to standards set by theNMEA (National Marine Electronics Association). Thisallows the AccuNav Sport to send position and naviga-tion information to “listener” units, such as chartinginstruments, autopi-lots, and other ma-rine instruments. TheAccuNav Sport usesthe following NMEAdata protocols:NMEA 0180 and0183. NMEA 0180sends steering infor-mation only. It’s use-ful mainly for marineautopilots. NMEA

0183 sends position, steering, speed, and more. Inorder to use this feature, the white wire on the optionalNMEA cable must be connected to the NMEA data inputon the other instrument. See the installation section inthe front of this manual for wiring connection informa-tion.

The AccuNav Sport also has the capability to receivedifferential data from a beacon receiver. This gives theunit much better accuracy than normal. However, be-fore purchasing and installing a beacon receiver, makecertain there are transmitters in the area you wish touse. Presently, the AccuNav Sport can use the Mag-navox MX-50R or StarLink MRB-2A. Please note thatthe AccuNav Sport doesn't send NMEA 0183 data whenthe Magnavox MX-50R beacon receiver is activated.

NMEA SETUPOnce you connect the wiring properly, the AccuNavSport must be told which NMEA data format to use.Consult the owner’s manual of the other equipment tosee which format it needs. Then set the AccuNav Sportas follows:

First, press the MENU key. Next, press the F5 (CHANGEGPS SETTINGS) key. Now press the F2 (SELECTNMEA/DGPS) key. The screen shown on the previouspage appears.

The data format currently in use shows at the top of thescreen. Press the key corresponding to the desired dataoutput. Now press the CLR key. The AccuNav Sport willreturn to the last used GPS screen and send NMEA dataout the NDC-1 NMEA/DGPS interface cable.

DGPS (Differential GPS) BEACON RECEIVER SETUPYou'll have to tell the AccuNav Sport which beaconreceiver's data to expect and set up the parameters forthat data. To do this, first press the MENU key. This page shows the station ID number, its frequencyand bit rate, the "health" of the station (0 = best, 5 =worst), signal strength (the higher the number, thebetter), and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The higherthe SNR number, the better. The lower half of the screenshows statistics for each of the receiver's five channels.This includes the sat-ellite number (PRN),its status (STAT), theUser DifferentialRange Error(UDRE), Time status(TIME), and if SA(Selective Availabil-ity) is on or off. TheUDRE is the rangeerror from your posi-tion to the satellite. If

SELECT UNITS OF MEASUREThe AccuNav Sport™ can display distance in miles,kilometers, or nautical miles, velocity in miles per hour,kilometers per hour, or knots, bearing in degrees mag-netic or true, altitude in feet or meters, and time in 12hour or 24 hour format.

To change any these, first press the MENU key. Next,press the F5 (CHANGE GPS SETTINGS) key. Finally,press the F3 (SELECT UNITS OF MEASURE) key. Thescreen shown at right appears. The black box on eachline shows the unit of measure currently in use. On this

screen, the units of measure are in statute miles fordistance, miles per hour for velocity, degrees magneticfor bearing, altitude in feet, and time is in the 12 hourformat (A.M./P.M..)

Press the key corresponding to the unit that you wish tochange. For example,press the F1 key twiceto switch from miles tokilometers. Thismoves the black boxtwo times from the “MI”to the “KM”.

When you have theunits of measure setas desired, press theCLR key.

TRUE and MAGNETIC POSITIONTrue and magnetic north are not the same. True north isthe top of the world. It’s where all lines of longitudeconverge. Magnetic north is the location our compassespoint. It lies several hundred miles to the south of truenorth, at a location in Canada.

Charts are usually laid out according to a Mercatorprojection that uses true north. If you plot a course on achart using the Mercator projection, you’ll either have toconvert magnetic readings to true or use true readings.

The AccuNav Sport can display navigation informationin magnetic or true. When it’s turned on for the first timemagnetic is used. To switch to true, first press the MENUkey. Next, press the F5 (CHANGE GPS SETTINGS)key. Finally, press the F3 (SELECT UNITS OF MEA-SURE) key. The screen shown on the previous page

appears. Now press the F3 (BEARING) key. This movesthe black box from “MAG” to “TRU.” Press the CLR keywhen you’re finished. This saves your changes andreturns to the GPS screen.

BACK LIGHT ON/OFFBoth the display and keyboard are backlighted for useat night. To prevent excessive current drain on thebatteries, when the battery voltage is less than 9.0 volts,the lights will stay on for 30 seconds, then automaticallyturn off. Press any key to turn them on again. To turn theback lighting on, simply press the ON key. To turn thebacklights off, press the ON key again. There is a backlight on/off switch on the position screen's third menupage, also.

BACKLIGHT ADJUSTThe intensity of the backlighting is adjustable. To changeit, press the MENU key three times, then press the F2(ADJUST BACK LIGHT LEVEL) key. A screen similar tothe one below appears. The light adjustment menushows at the bottomof the screen. Pressthe left arrow key todecrease the lightlevel, the right arrowkey to increase it.When the light is setto the desired level,press the CLR key toerase this menu.

PRESETThe Preset feature returns all GPS units to their originalfactory settings. This resets the units of measure, speakervolume, display contrast, and more. This doesn’t eraseany waypoints or routes, however it does erase plottertrails.

To preset the unit, press the MENU key until the “PRE-SET UNIT” label appears. Press the key correspondingto that label. The menu screen disappears and theAccuNav Sport™ returns to the GPS position screen. Allunits will be returned to their factory settings.

PCF OFFSETThe GPS navigation system relies on complex math-ematical calculations to determine your position basedon satellite data and other factors. One factor is theEarth's shape. Since the Earth is not a true sphere,variations in the calculations have to be made to accom-modate deviations. To make matters more complex, noteveryone uses the same data to determine what thedeviations are. The size and shape of the ellipsoids thatare used to approximate the earth's surface are im-proved often. This can lead to errors if your navigationdevice uses one ellipsoid, while your chart uses adifferent one. The term used for these ellipsoids is"Datum."

To reduce the error factor between datum, this unit givesyou the capability to move or "offset" the position shownon the display to match the one on the chart. The unit will

add this offset to all position displays at all times.

Remember, the GPS error is very dynamic and the PCFoffset should never be used in an attempt to cancel theerror. In general terms this feature should only be usedif your map indicates what the possible error is. Thisfeature should always be reset to zero (0) whenyou're finished with that chart.

For example, suppose you are stopped at a location thatis accurately marked on a chart. Your unit shows alongitude position that is .010 degrees less than the oneon the chart. Using the Position Correction Factor (PCF)Offset feature, you make the unit read the same as thechart. If you move, the unit will continuously add thechange to all position displays. This makes it moreclosely match the datum used by the chart. For thisreason, you should be careful when entering the PCF

offset. This offset is saved in memory. It doesn't changewhen the unit is turned off. However, a Preset doeserase the PCF factor.

To set the PCF factor, first press the MENU key, thenpress the key corresponding to the "CHANGE GPSSETTINGS" label.Now press the F5(ADJUST PCF OFF-SET") key. Thescreen shown at rightappears.

Now press the F6 keyto enter the correc-tion factor for your lo-cation. The screen

shown below appears. Remember, this is the differencebetween the location shown on the present positiondisplay and the position shown on the chart.

Use the right and left arrow keys to move the black boxto the number that you wish to change in the latitude,then enter the num-bers.

Use the up or downarrow keys to changethe latitude from northto south, if necessary.Press the ENT keywhen you've enteredthe desired latitude off-set. Repeat this pro-cedure to change the

longitude. In this example, we have entered .012degrees south latitude and .068 degrees west longitudeas the PCF offset. That is the difference between thepresent position shown on the unit and our positionshown by the chart. In other words, our position shownon the unit is 0.012 degrees north and 0.068 degreeseast of the position shown on the chart.

After you've entered the desired offset, press the F4key. This turns the PCF correction factor that youentered on. To leave this screen, press the CLR key.This returns the unit to the last used GPS screen. It alsoputs your changes into effect.

To turn these changes off, return to this screen andpress the F4 key. Remember, presetting the unit alsoerases any PCF offset, thereby turning it off.

SYSTEM INFORMATIONThe System Information menu gives you the date andrevision number of the software used in the AccuNavSport™. To view this screen, press the MENU keyrepeatedly until the fourth menu page appears. Nowpress the key corresponding to the "System Informa-tion" menu. Thescreen shown at rightappears.
