2010 Town of MonumentIndependence Day Parade

“Home of the Free Because of the Brave”

The Town of Monument celebrates Independence Day each year with a parade and festival that draws close

to 30,000 spectators. We are privileged to live in a country where we are fee to celebrate “Home of the

Free Because of the Brave”. This year the parade will be held Saturday, July 3, 2010. The parade is known

as the “biggest small town parade in Colorado!” The Monument Hill Kiwanis Club is proud to sponsor and

marshal the parade. Their members have managed the parade for over eighteen (18) years.

CHILDRENS PARADE:

The children’s section of the parade begins at 9:30 a.m. No entry form is required for the children’s parade.

Youngsters participating in the children’s parade should assemble in the parking lot of St. Peters Catholic

Church located at the corner of First St. and Jefferson no later than 9:15 a.m. The parade will start from

this point at 9:30 a.m. Children are encouraged to decorate their tricycles, bicycles, wagons, animals,

moms and dads. No gasoline engine motorized scooters or two-wheelers. Ribbons will be presented

to all Children’s parade participants.

THE PARADE:

The parade will start at First and Jefferson Streets and end at 2nd Street and Beacon Lite Road. See center

of booklet for entire map. The parade will start at 10:00 a.m. and end at approximately 11:30 a.m. The

parade traditionally is made up of over 100 entries and draws an estimated 30,000 spectators. Everyone has

childhood memories of the bands, fire engines, clown and Shiners’ driving their crazy cars and more candyand other loot passed out to the kids than they get on Halloween! This is a chance to be a kid again and

relive those memories or pass them on to their own children.

TRANSPORTATION:

The organization of the parade has been top notch. It is easy to get into town on the free shuttles and have

lunch and shop at the street fair. The return to your car is just as easy going home. The center map shows

all parking areas for Monument and Palmer Lake. Take advantage of the shuttles and have a pleasant and

relaxing day in one of the most beautiful settings in the state.

TRAFFIC/PARKING:

July 3 events will require several road closings during the day. Portions of Old Denver Highway, Santa Fe,

Jefferson, Lincoln, First, Second, and Third streets, and Beacon Lite Rd. will be closed or reduced to a

single lane during the day. Interstate 25 may also experience delays. We ask that you observe all barricaded

streets. Many children will be running through the streets and by removing or moving barricades you put

them at risk. Uncooperative drivers may be ticketed by police.

FIRST AID, LOST PARENTS: See safety section in booklet. PLEASE DO NOT LITTER

AFTER THE PARADE:

Join area Fire and Police Departments and local Boy Scout units after the parade for a US Flag Retirement

ceremony, as we respectfully dispose of American flags that are unfit for continued service.

Please Be Safe During Fourth of July HolidayThe Tri-Lakes region holds many traditional small-town activities during the Fourth of July weekend. The

parade, street fair and fireworks are signature events that anchor many other activities. We would like to

take this opportunity to remind everyone that safety is the most vital concern of this holiday celebration.

Traffic/Parking – July 3-4 events will require several road closings during the day. Portions of Old Denver

Highway, Santa Fe, Jefferson, Lincoln, First, Second, and Third streets, and Beacon Lite Rd will be closed or reduced to a single lane during the day. Interstate 25 may also experience delays. Parking will be available

at Lewis Palmer Elementary School, Palmer Ridge High School, and Lewis Palmer High School. Compli-

mentary shuttles will take passengers to and from the downtown events. We ask that you observe all barricaded

streets. Many children will be running through the streets and by removing or moving barricades you put them

at risk. Uncooperative drivers may be ticketed by police.

Avoid overexposure to the Sun – Protect your skin by wearing long sleeved shirts, pants instead of shorts and

a wide-brimmed hat. When skin is exposed, apply sunscreen with at least an SPF-15. Heat stress can also be a

risk; keep drinking water to remain hydrated. Remember to take frequent breaks, drink plenty of water and

reapply sunscreen frequently.

Everybody loves a parade… so arrive early to enjoy our street fair. Plan to stay in the Tri-Lakes region for

the entire day. Performing for you in the parade will be many of the wonderful people and organization that

make the Tri-Lakes the great community it is. Please keep your children out of the street during the parade.

Parade vehicles often have limited lines of sight, making the street more dangerous than normal. Please keep

children safely out of parade traffic. Of course one reason children love parades is – CANDY! As you sit along

the parade route, please watch over the younger ones carefully. If you are participating in the parade remember

to walk alongside your entry and hand out candy or other items.

Super soakers and squirt guns –  Keep these away from the parade and everyone can have a reasonably

good time with water. In the past we’ve had several minor incidents caused by people aggressively spraying

water. Overly aggressive behavior is not acceptable and will be stopped by the police.

Fireworks –  Palmer Lake will provide a fantastic Fireworks display at dusk. Last years’ event with choir and

orchestra capped a perfect summer day! However, not everyone leaves fireworks to the professionals.

According to Prevent Blindness, nearly 13,000 fireworks victims keep emergency rooms busy every year.

More than half of those treated are children. Fireworks not only injure the users, but 40 percent

of the injuries are to bystanders. The three types of fireworks that keep hospitals busiest are bottle rockets,

firecrackers and sparklers. Bottle rockets and firecrackers can fly in any direction and explode anytime.Sparklers burn at 1,800 degrees, hot enough to melt gold. One of the reasons these injuries occur is that people

do not consider how dangerous these devices can be. People often don’t realize until they are injured the risk

of blindness outweighs the excitement of taking risks with fireworks. Bottom line on fireworks is that they

are dangerous and illegal in our area. Illegal fireworks WILL be confiscated.

PLEASE DO NOT LITTER –  our activities attract thousands of people. If you bring snacks, food and drinks

to enjoy during the day, we ask you to also pack a trash bag and dispose of your trash properly. Each year following

the events, the venues are littered with trash from those who come to watch or participate. Please help keep the

Tri-Lakes area clean and beautiful. Waste containers are strategically placed to help you dispose of trash properly. First Aid, Lost Parents –  Police, Fire and EMTs are on duty. Should an emergency event occur, please dial

911 and contact the closest uniformed officer or parade official who can call for assistance. Parade volunteers

are not allowed to administer first aid, but EMTs on bikes are on duty all day.

The most important aspect of the festivities is that the thousands in attendance enjoy, celebrate and return home

safely. Please help us to ensure all Fourth of July events are fun, memorable and safe for all. Get out and celebrate

our country’s Independence Day right here in the Tri-Lakes region. From dawn to dusk come celebrate with us!

During the American Revolution, the legal separation o the American colonies rom GreatBritain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve aresolution o independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee o Virginia. Ater voting or independence, congress turned its attention to the Declaration o Independence,a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a committee o fve, withThomas Jeerson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the Declaration, fnally approving it on July 4. A day earlier, John Adams had written to his wie Abigail: “The secondday o July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history o America. I am apt tobelieve that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary estival. It ought to be commemorated as the day o deliverance, by solemn acts o devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfres, and illuminations, rom one end o this continent to the other, rom this timeorward orever more.” His prediction was o by two days.

One o the most enduring myths about Independence Day is that Congress signed the

Declaration o Independence on July 4, 1776. The myth had become so frmly establishedthat, decades ater the event and nearing the end o their lives, even the elderly ThomasJeerson and John Adams had come to believe that they and the other delegates had signedthe Declaration on the ourth. Most delegates actually signed the Declaration on August 2,1776. In a remarkable series o coincidences, both John Adams and Thomas Jeerson, twoounding athers o the United States and the only two men who signed the Declaration oIndependence to become president, died on the same day: July 4 1826, which was the UnitedStates’ 50th anniversary.

Observance

In 1777, thirteen gunshots were fred, once at morning and again as evening ell, on July 4in Bristol, Rhode Island. Philadelphia celebrated the frst anniversary in a manner a modern American would fnd quite amiliar; an ofcial dinner or the Continental Congress, toasts,13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews, and freworks. Ships weredecked with red, white, and blue bunting. Held in 1785, the Bristol July 4 parade is the oldestcontinuous Independence Day celebration in the United States.

In 1778, General George Washington marked July 4 with a double ration o rum or hissoldiers and an artillery salute. Across the Atlantic Ocean, Ambassadors John Adams andBenjamin Franklin held a dinner or their ellow Americans in Paris, France. In 1779, July ell on a Sunday. The holiday was celebrated on Monday, July 5.

In 1781, the Massachusetts General Court became the frst state legislature to recognize July 4 as a state celebration.

In 1783, Moravians in Salem, North Carolina, held a celebration o July 4 with a challengingmusic program assembled by Johann Friedrich Peter. This work was titled “The Psalm o Joy”.

In 1791 the frst recorded use o the name “Independence Day” occurred. In 1820 the frst Fourth o July celebration was held in Eastport, Maine which remains thelargest in the state.

In 1870, the U.S. congress made Independence Day an unpaid holiday or ederal employees.

Since 1916, Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City

supposedly started as a way to settle a dispute among our immigrants as to who was the mostpatriotic.

In 1938, Congress changed Independence Day to a paid ederal holiday.

The amous Macy’s freworks display usually held over the East River in New York City has beentelevised nationwide on NBC since 1976. In 2009, the freworks display was returned to theHudson River or the frst time since 2000 to commemorate the 400th anniversary o Henry Hudson’s exploration o that river.

On the Capitol lawn in Washington D.C., “A Capitol ourth,” a ree concert precedes thefreworks and attracts over a hal million people annually.
