• Orientation to East Side Access program

• Overview of Model and its development

• Examples of Model application

• Some lessons learned

• Key benefits to the CM of BIM tool

Presentation Agenda

East Side Access – where is it?

• Capacity limitations are choking new transit growth throughout New York City

– LIRR is at capacity

– Penn Station is at capacity

– Penn Station is not located on the east side of Manhattan, where about half of LIRR’s customers ultimately go

East Side Access – why build it?

•Provides 162,000 trips per day

•Saves thousands of East Side-bound commuters 30-40 minutes per day

•Relieves congestion at Penn Station

• Increases East River tunnel capacity

• Improves operational flexibility through Harold Interlocking (Amtrak, LIRR, NJT)

East Side Access – how does it help?

East Side Access – by the numbers…

Project Scope:•$10+ billion cost•71 construction contracts•8 miles of new tunnels•3 miles of existing tunnel•25 miles of track •7 interlockings•11 facility power substations

• 8 traction substations• 69 elevators and

escalators• 2 control centers• 13 fan plants• 18 miles of ductbank• 148 miles of cable

Modeling the Project

Paper Based Digital

One of, if not the largest BIM in the world

Found Issues

3D Printed Mock-upsVirtual Mock-up

• Project Logistics Support

• Analysis of pre-cast vs. poured

Constructability Review

Tunnels fully modeled

Code compliance review

Many clearance issues uncovered

Capturing existing conditions – GCT concourse level

Laser point cloud Generated model

• Eight City blocks scanned

• Eliminated the need for a construction survey

Design intent clash detection

+400 Conflicts exposed prior to construction

Contractor coordination

6 months saved in up-front coordination

Linking cost, schedule, progress together

Daily Work progress tracking -Integrated As-Built

Linking assets and operational data together

Facility Management

• QR Coding of equipment upon installation

• Coding can be part of inspection protocol

• Linked to Asset Management System

Concourse Level Equipment Tagging

Facilities Management drawings –linked to field

FM sheets of assets /equipment tagged with unique IDs and location

Experience Simulations

• Modeling standards to ensure integration across contracts

• The BIM management team has to be embedded with the Project team

• The BIM goals have to be clearly defined

Some lessons learned

• Visualization of complex interdisciplinary construction coordination helps identify and resolve issues

• Integration of design, construction schedule and progress records gives management efficiencies and

• Time-stamped accurate field data helps avoid and defend claims

Key benefits with BIM integration
