When talking about Hue imperial city, people will talk about an antique capital quite magnificent, Ao Dai gracefully (traditional dress of Vietnam), the gentle voice and the songs which captivated many people. All shown a little sadly, slowly very characteristics here. One great place for you to go backpacking.

One day to explore Hue antique capital, locals, historic buildings, cuisine…. really not enough. If you have only one day? Okay, this is the plan, the guide for you to go backpacking in the Hue ancient capital!

Before the trip, we should equip some knowledge about transportation, motels and cuisine of this ancient city!

1. transportation

Normally, many backpackers prefer ride motorcycle throughout Vietnam and stopped at Hue ancient city. With the motorcycle, you can free wander and explore all corners of this ancient city. One bicycle also a good idea because this city is also small.

2. Motels

Here is the thing you can rest assured when going backpacking in Hue ancient city. There a lot of motels, hotels for you choose with reasonable price. You can book room at here. (picked date and some request on the left corner then choose hotel which your desires.)

3. Cuisine

This is the thing I remember most about Hue imperial city. I used to have hear, eat and becomes addicted the porridge and the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup of Hue (Bun Bo Hue). However, when I arrive Hue, both dishes’re not the dishes which I most interested anymore. The cuisine here extremely diversified and price are very cheap! Here some dishes you should try:

Spicy Beef Noodle Soup: 22 Le Loi, 13 Ly Thuong Kiet, Mrs My (71 Nguyen Cong Tru)…

Banh beo: Mrs Do (71 Nguyen Binh Khiem), or some eateries on Ngu Binh street…

Banh canh: Mrs Doi (9 Nguyen Trai and 34 Ngo Gia Tu)

Vermicelli with marinated char-grilled pork (bun thit nuong): front the Dong Ba market gate or at Kim Long street.

Hue porridge (there a lot of kinds): Che Hem (17 Hung Vuong Street), sweet lotus bean porridge in Đai Noi, Cung Dinh (31 Nguyen Hue)…

Com hen: there one sidewalk stall on the street named Hanoi in the morning.

And there many cafe with price very cheap, especially, I prefer sidewalk cafe.

Some sightseeing places in Hue imperial city

Hue Imperial Citadel

In the morning, you can start with a bowl of bun bo Hue or a com hen bowl at one sidewalk

stall on the Ha Noi street. A trip lasted all day, perhaps you will feel tired feet a lot!

The imperial citadel is one of place you cannot miss when go backpacking Hue. For me, this is a most place worth visiting. With ticket price about 150k VND, you can find out about architecture, cultural and history of Vietnam here. There are many architectures so magnificent, unique and the interesting historical tales.

Ngo Mon

Thai Hoa Palace

If you’re not bring camera or smartphone, perhaps your trip became meaningless. In order go around imperial citadel, it can take all morning, because here very wide. There a lot of tourist visited the imperial citadel, however, they only visit the main palace and some places around. I had walking on all corners and road here therefore I get lucky exploring a lot of interesting things that many people missed when arrive here. Here some places you should not to miss:

Noon gate or Ngo Mon: (you buy entrance ticket at here), Thai Hoa Palace (there throne golden, luxuriously) behind Ngo Mon Gate. The Nine Dynastic Urns(Cuu Dinh, from Ngo Mon gate go into and turn left), flower-garden (entertainment place of the prince and princess). The Imperial citadel has four gates (you should find and go up there to watch the whole city)…

Now, Imperial Citadel has been restored the damage from war period so looks a bit messy at some sightseeing places. However, it would more beautiful later. Below is some note for you:

Behind Thai Hoa palace there the screen projecting videos of Imperial Citadel, you should watch it for understanding more about this place.

At here, there also has the theatre simulating the activities of king and mandarins in old days. Usually it takes place in the morning. Let remember watch!

You can hire the antique costumes to wear and taking image sit the throne. (I’m not encouraging this)

The is the most important note which useful for you: wandering around and watch the sight is great, however, if you understand each place, some exhibits would more wonderful. You should hire a tour guide, or following a tourist group which hired the tour guide to listening they talking about places we visit. Of course, there some places they only arrive and go away quickly, so the best is you should self explore!

Thien Mu Pagoda

Leaving the Imperial Citadel, you can come to other side of Huong river to enjoy delicious foods here, then continue the trip on the afternoon. On the road go to Thien Mu Pagoda, along with Kim Long street there sells vermicelli noodles with grilled pork quite delicious, you can try. (eat sole this food perhaps bit hungry, you should refer some delicious foods I mentioned above)

Here, the sight is so beautiful, you should stand on the pagoda and watch the Huong river, it’s so romantic!

You should arrive here to go in the boat on Huong river and listening the Hue folk songs

Tomb of Khai Dinh

In fact, there to 3 ancient tombs which you should visit. However, in that case a bit costly, each tomb has entrance ticket about 100k vnd. I think you should visit this tomb. It was rating one of the newest and most beautiful tomb in Hue. Besides, you should visit Minh Mang and Gia Long tomb. The Khai Dinh Tomb far away from Thien Mu Pagoda about 10km.

Ancient Town – Trang Tien bridge

This is the place you should not miss, especially in the night at the Hue imperial city. You can wander and sightsee the ancient town and Trang Tien bridge right at Hương river side.

It’s a great space for the couples with the lanterns brilliantly reflect the twinkle light around. Moreover, at here has a lot of youngsters performed the street art. That’s the youthful image between the antique space.

You should also take the time to enjoy cuisine here. Keep wandering on the roads, eat anything which you never ever eat before. Hue is very famous for culinary arts! Please be assured, price of foods very suitable your budget.
