IFA has been working with PietaHouse since 2011 to provide infor-mation and support to farmers andtheir families through the ‘Mind OurFarm Families’ phone line and coun-selling service.
The 1890 130 022 phone line putsfarmers who are feeling suicidal, ortheir families, in direct contact with aPieta House trained therapist who canlisten and will make an appointmentin one of their nine centres, if needed. The therapist will provide a compas-sionate, solution focussed, one-to-onecounselling service completely freeof charge. The ‘Mind Our Farm Fam-ilies’ phone line provides support notjust to the person who is feeling sui-cidal but to concerned family mem-bers or friends.
IFA Farm Family Chairperson MauraCanning said, “We want to make surethat farmers and their families havean outlet to talk - for a lot people justtalking, sharing their pain is almostlike a weight being lifted from theirshoulders. We know that rural popu-lations are more at risk of suicidethan urban communities and the ratetends to escalate with levels of ruralremoteness. An estimated 13% ofthose who die from suicide are froman agricultural background. Interna-tionally, men have been shown to bethree times more likely to commitsuicide than women – in Ireland, thatfigure rises to four-times more likely.
“About 70% of the people who cometo Pieta House have no history ofmental illness; they are simply react-ing to life events. For farm families, economic difficulties, trying to copewith increased regulation, increasedprice volatility and falling incomes, are very challenging. These issueshave been shown to be particularlychallenging for male farmers whoidentify their masculinity with pro-viding for their families.”
Maura Canning encouraged anybodywith a concern about a family mem-ber or friend to reach out. She said,“The most common signs that some-one may be in distress are that theyare withdrawing from social situa-tions, not answering their phone oraccepting visitors, noticeable deterio-ration in the condition of the farm orthe care of animals, possibly in-creased use of alcohol or drugs aswell as behavioural changes such asemotional outbursts, changes in sleepor loss of appetite. It is often the useof language that can be the most tell-ing sign, phrases such as ‘my familywould be better off without me’ or ‘Isee no light at the end of the tunnel’”.
The Mind Our Farm Families phoneline 1890 130 022 is accessible Mon-day to Friday from 9am to 6pm andon Saturdays from 10am to 2pm.Outside of these hours The Samari-tans on 116 123 and Console on 1800247 247 provide 24 hour support.Console also provides a support serv-ice for families bereaved by suicide.

The spirit of meitheal was alive andwell in Tipperary this week as the Tip-perary Food Producers Network wel-comed the Guild of Fine Food and ahost of Irish and international judgesfor the Great Taste Awards with a se-ries of special events.
Following Clonmel’s own James Whe-lan Butchers Supreme Champion winlast year at the Great Taste Awards, the Guild of Fine Food took their showon the road and for the first time everheld the Irish judging process in Coun-ty Tipperary.
Welcoming a whole host of food ex-perts such as Charles Campion, BBCRadio 2’s Nigel Barden and many ofthe best chefs, buyers, restaurateursand writers in the business, the GreatTaste roadshow were given a true tasteof Tipperary and a genuine sense ofIreland’s impressive and diverse col-lection of food and drink producers.
Starting on Tuesday after the day’stasting with an evening at the famousCoolmore Stud, judges and guestswere taken on a behind the scenes tourof the stud generally acknowledged tobe the world’s biggest and best thor-oughbred racehorse breeding opera-tion. During their tour they weretreated to a special audience with Gali-leo, the crown jewel of Coolmore, fol-lowed by a relaxed BBQ supperfeaturing local products such as thefamous James Whelan Butchers burg-ers and The Butcher’s Daughter sau-sages, freshly made corn tortillas fromBlanco Niño, breads and from Mag’sHome Baking and meringues fromThe Tipperary Kitchen, all accompa-nied by delicious wines selected byGary Gubbins of Clonmel’s own RedNose Wine. After supper, guests werebrought to McCarthy’s of Fethard forsome craic agus ceol in the form of therousing Pheasant Pluckers who soonhad the whole crowd singing along.
Aside from the evening entertainmentand feasting, there was serious busi-ness to attend to during the day. Theannual Great Taste Awards, organisedby the Guild of Fine Food, are consid-ered the ‘Oscars’ of the food world
and the ‘epicurean equivalent of theBooker prize’, being an acknowledgedbenchmark for fine food and drink. The business of tasting is a thoroughand rigorous one with over 1300 prod-ucts entered into Great Taste 2016from Ireland including cider, beer, tea, preserves, meats and cheeses and over850 products were judged in Tipperarythis week. The Great Taste Awardshave seen a large increase in Irishcompanies entering the awards sincelast year alone, a jump from 157 in2015 to 215 in 2016.
On Wednesday evening, following thesecond day of tasting, guests enjoyed atour of the spectacular Rock Of Casheland some traditional Irish dancing bylocal children. A five-minute strolldownhill and guests arrived at ChezHans for a Long Table Dinner. Set in aconverted Victorian Gothic church,Chez Hans was the perfect setting inwhich to showcase the excellent stand-ard and quality of Tipperary produce, with a stunning and sophisticated six-course tasting menu.
The menu included pulled pork ravioliusing magnificent Crowes Farm pork, with swede puree, almonds and lovagebutter, followed by deep fried brie andbeetroot salad with black pudding andwatercress courtesy of CooleeneyFarm, O’Donnell’s and Inch House. One of the key dishes was a fillet ofIrish Piedmontese beef, with beef drip-ping fondant potato, made using lastyear’s Great Taste Award SupremeChampion winner, James WhelanButchers Beef Dripping. There wasalso Crozier Blue, pearl barley, ciderand celeriac with onion marmaladeand rapeseed oil from Cashel Farm-house Cheesemakers, Longways Ci-der, Crossogue Preserves and EmeraldOils, and guests enjoyed some excep-tional French wines from the Langue-doc, again carefully chosen andprovided by expert Gary Gubbins ofClonmel’s own Red Nose Wine.
Finally guests were treated to some-thing sweet from The Apple Farm,Boulabán Farm and Lough DergChocolates and something soulfulfrom the wonderful Kathy Nugent. Herdazzling performance of Broadwayclassics roused the crowd to song, andshe even made a few misty-eyed with
her rendition of As She MovedThrough The Fair.
On the final evening, following threeand a half very successful days of tast-ing new flavours, forming new friend-ships and falling in love withTipperary, guests and judges couldchoose from four separate intimatedining experiences. Each as personaland authentic as the other, one dinnerwas served in Crossogue House andFarney Castle, home to the famousCrossogue Preserves, a second dinnerin Inch House, home of the renownedblack pudding, hosted by owners Johnand Nora Egan, a third in Hickey’sBakery and Café hosted by fourth gen-eration baker, Nuala Hickey, and thefourth in elegant Greenane House.
Guests and judges spent a warm andwelcoming evening with their respec-tive hosts before retiring for their finalnight’s sleep to Hotel Minella, wholooked after all the judges throughouttheir entire stay with charm and pro-fessionalism, and in cosy comfort.
Last year’s overall Great Taste Awardschampion, the Harrods Trophy Su-preme Champion 2015, winner of acoveted Golden Fork and three goldstars, was James Whelan Butchers’magnificent Beef Dripping. Pat Whe-lan of James Whelan Butchers is thecurrent Chairperson of Tipperary FoodProducers, so his passion for the areaand his enthusiasm for having the op-portunity to introduce these importantinternational opinion-makers to thebest of his home county were a majorfactor in this year’s judging roadshowdecision.
“The judges, from all corners of thefood world, have had busy days ofjudging in Tipperary, but have alsohad three evenings packed full of fla-vour, colour, welcome and fun in thecapable hands of Tipperary Food Pro-ducers,” says Pat Whelan, Chairpersonof Tipperary Food Producers. “Thiswas a wonderful project to be involvedwith, and it has been made possible bythe generous support of all the localand national agencies whose collabo-ration is immensely appreciated by allat Tipperary Food Producers. Our sin-cere thanks go to Tipperary CountyCouncil, Bord Bia, Local EnterpriseOffice Tipperary, Tipperary TourismCompany, Department of AgricultureFood & the Marine, North TipperaryLeader Partnership, and South Tipper-ary Development Company.”

Saturday 30th April 2016 will godown in the history books of Tipper-ary Camogie as the day this bunch ofyoung ladies came to St. Brendan’sPark, Birr, Co.Offaly and delivered adevastating performance that Gal-way just had no answer for andwalked away All-Ireland champions.Tipp looked more focused with thejob in hand second time round andfrom the throw in were causing theGalway defence all sorts of prob-lems. It was Galway that got the firstscore of the game from a free in the7th minute and it wasn’t until the13th minute that Tipp got their firstscore from Sinead Buckley. This year, the festival commemorates100 years since the birth of modern Ireland byexploring the theme of Ireland’s Iconic First Citi-zens. Andrew, originallyfrom Birr County Offaly, emigrated with his par-ents to New Zealand in 1949. After 22 years An-drew and his parents returned to live in Ireland1971. In 1999 KCAT was founded. KCAT aimsto create a new situation, an environment inwhich artists and students from different back-grounds and abilities can work and create togeth-er and in which life-long learning is anopportunity for everyone. This is just one of over90 events that will be held during Bealtainearound the county.

The peace and tranquillity Bryson hopes tofind is anything but, once he agrees to be accom-panied by the only person he can find willing tojoin him on the trek - his long lost and formerfriend Katz (Nick Nolte), a down-on-his-luck seri-al philanderer. This pair of hiking amateurs have acompletely different definition of the word "ad-venture". Now they're about to find out thatwhen you push yourself to the edge, the real funbegins.

Counselling
By Jim O’Shea
Anxiety (continued from previous issue)
It is sad, considering howdevastating and crippling it is, thatso few people seek help for socialanxiety. Many never seek help, butremain trapped in a negative anddistressing world. Because so manyof them have it since childhood, they see it as normal, even when itdevelops into a debilitatingcomplaint as they move throughadulthood. It has been noted that atleast half of social phobics arehappy and contented as children, but as they enter adolescence, theybecome more self-conscious, andget social anxiety. I am not sure Isubscribe to that theory, but like allanxiety, it is possible, if not to fullycure it, to greatly ease it. Forexample, as I have already shown, the wiring of the brain can bechanged by substituting the positivefor the negative over a long period.Similarly, if social anxiety is agenetic or learned behaviour it canbe unlearned. The sufferer mayavail of drugs or counselling to getrelief. I think counselling is thebetter option. I believe that acombination of different types ofcounselling is the preferred way togo about dissolving this painfulcondition. The humanistic typehelps to build up self-confidence,and the cognitive behavioural helpsthe victim to desensitise and facethe anxiety. Cognitive behaviouraltherapy can also be used to explainthe nature of anxiety, and this helpsto take some of the fear out of theequation. Sufferers are shown thelink between illogical thinking andresulting behaviour. The sufferer isgiven help to unlearn the negativebehaviour and thinking, and tochallenge irrational thoughts.Rather than using avoidance thesufferer is taught to use a gradualprocess to desensitise himself tosocial occasions. The importantword here is gradual. Rather thanface the anxiety- provoking
situation the sufferer slowly buildsup confidence by taking small stepsusing exposure therapy. Forexample if you have a fear ofpublic speaking, you could beginby looking at video of peoplegiving public speeches (at electiontimes!!). Imagine that you are thatperson. Then prepare a speech anddeliver it when you are alone inyour room. You might then talk toa friend or a family member aboutthe themes in the speech. After that, you might give the speech to thatfriend or family member. Then youcould give the speech to a smallnumber of friends. In that way, youbecome familiar and desensitised tomaking a speech. This takes time, effort and patience. For children who have developedwhat is called selective mutism(unable to speak when asked aquestion in school, but who haveno problem when speaking athome) the counsellor graduallyhelps the child feel comfortablewhen speaking.
