A local charity realized that theorganization had never received adonation from the town's mostsuccessful lawyer. The person incharge of contributions called himto persuade him to contribute."Our research shows that out of ayearly income of at least€500,000, you give not a penny tocharity. Wouldn't you like to giveback to the community in someway?"The lawyer mulled this over for amoment and replied, "First, did

your research also show that mymother is dying after a long ill-ness, and has medical bills thatare several times her annual in-come?"Embarrassed, the charity repmumbled, "Um ... no."The lawyer interrupts, "or that mybrother, a disabled veteran, isblind and confined to a wheel-chair?"The stricken charity rep began tostammer out an apology, but wasinterrupted again.

"or that my sister's husband diedin a traffic accident," the lawyer'svoice rising in indignation,"leaving her penniless with threechildren?!"The humiliated charity rep, com-pletely beaten, said simply, "I hadno idea..."On a roll, the lawyer cut him offonce again, "So if I don't give anymoney to them, why should I giveany to you?"

Somebody has said there are onlytwo kinds of people in the world. There are those who wake up inthe morning and say, "Goodmorning, Lord,"And there are those who wake upin the morning and say, "GoodLord, it's morning."

Jerry was removing some enginevalves from a car on the lift whenhe spotted the famous heart sur-geon Dr. Samuel Kaiser, who wasstanding off to the side, waitingfor the service manager.Jerry, who was somewhat of aloud mouth, shouted across thegarage, "Hey Kaiser. Is dat you?Come over here a minute."

The famous surgeon, a bit sur-prised, walked over to where Jer-ry was working on the car. Jerry,in a loud voice that all could hear, said argumentatively, "So Mr.fancy doctor, look at this work. Itoo, take valves out, grind 'em,put in new parts, and when I'mfinished, this baby will purr like akitten. So how come you get thebig bucks, when you and me aredoing basically the same work?"Dr. Kaiser, very embarrassed, shook his head and replied in asoft voice, "Try doing your workwith the engine running."

Did you hear about the paranoidwith low self-esteem?He thought that nobody importantwas out to get him

The teacher was giving her classof seven-year-olds a natural histo-ry lesson."Worker ants," she told them,"can carry pieces of food fivetimes their own weight. What doyou conclude from that?"One child was ready with an an-swer: "They don't have a union."

“An archaeologist is the best husband a woman can have. The older she gets themore interested he is in her.” Agatha Christie

You’re not alone as the perfectkitchen tops most homeowners’ wishlists. If you’ve started looking but arenow overwhelmed with the amountof information out there on kitchendesign, layout, work zones, types ofworktops, tiles, taps, you’re notalone.

A good starting point is to decide iswhether you prefer a more classic ormore modern look. Making that deci-sion will help you start to narrowdown choices on everything fromwall color to cabinet doors.

Here’s Andy’s from Savvy Kitchen’sjargon buster to show you the differ-ence in the styles available;Country Styled Kitchens - timber is amajor feature either in the cabinetryand or the flooring and the furniture. The finish to the wood is simple andoften a white wash or distressed lookis used over the wood to create anaged feel.

There are also regional styles in thisgroup and you’ll come across namessuch as;∙   French Country Style / Provencal / French Provincial (if youthink bright yellows, pinks, reds andblues, and terracotta floor tiles, youhave got it)∙   Old English Country Style(think mellow colours such as creamsand pinks, flowers, worn floor rugsand timber kitchen chairs)∙   American Country Style(think barn reds and dusky blues, patchwork upholstery and paintedfloor boards).

The best way to describe it is if youfeel safe, warm and comfortablelooking at a kitchen – then it’s proba-

bly a country style kitchen.

Contemporary Styled Kitchens – ifit’s sleek and streamlined looking,it’s contemporary. These kitchensmake great use of space, they lookvery simple and are open looking. The cabinetry is simple with little orno decoration; it is often made of pre-finished board like laminate, a paletimber veneer, or a lacquered paintMDF board. Glass in overhead cabi-nets is common and lighting plays akey role.

According to Andy from SavvyKitchens, “when looking at differentstyles, make sure you match yourkitchen style to the rest of your houseand furnishings – there’s no point inhaving a sleek modern kitchen andthe rest of your house is like a coun-try cottage.”

To get a good overview of the differ-ent types of kitchen styles available, check out Savvy Kitchen’s newshowroom in O’Donovan RossaStreet, Thurles. The showroom has 3new cutting edge room sets that givecustomers a great idea of what thekitchens would look like in their ownhome. Come and check out;∙   The traditional painted oakkitchen∙   The contemporary shakerlight oak and painted mix∙   The ultra modern hi glosskitchen

It’s now over to you to decide onwhich style reflects your home best.

Tipperary’s PreviousChampionship Games 2011

In 2002 Tipperary were defendingAll Ireland Champions, but didn’treach the NHL Final. In 2011 theymissed out on the Allianz Leaguefinal.

In 2002 Tipperary were managed byan All Ireland winning forward(Nicky English) from the West Di-vision, who was on the 1989 and1991 winning teams. In 2011 Dec-lan Ryan fits the same description.

In 2002 the Tipp Manager had acontemporary playing colleaguewith him from North Tipperary(Ken Hogan), along with a slightlyolder selector from Mid Tipp (JackBergin), who had also played cham-pionship hurling for Tipperary. In2011 Tommy Dunne and MichaelGleeson fit the same criteria respec-tively.

In 2002 Tipperary played twogames to reach the Munster Final. In2011 they have done the same.

In 2002 Clare played well againstTipp, but Eoin Kelly’s first half goalturned the game around. Eoin was

also top scorer for Tipp in their firstchampionship game. In 2011 thesame happened.

In 2002 Brendan Cummins was inthe Tipp goal and made a vital firsthalf save against Clare. In 2011 hedid it again.

In 2002 Waterford had a Managerwho was a native on another county. In 2011, the same holds true.

In 2002 Waterford won their Mun-ster Semi Final, at Semple Stadium,by one point, on a wet day. In 2011they did the same.

In 2002 The Munster Final wasplayed in Cork. In 2011 it is also inCork.

In 2002 A Leinster referee was ap-pointed to take charge. In 2011 aLeinster referee has been appointedto take charge.

In 2002 Waterford won the gamewith a late scoring burst. In 2011?????

St. Cillian’s Camogie club becamethe first Offaly team to win a divi-sion 2 Feile na nGael All-IrelandCamogie championship in PearseStadium , Galway on Sunday June26th. This was a phenomenal perfor-mance from this young , skilful andhard working team , a team whichpossesses a fantastic will to win anda never say die attitude . All but twoof this young team are eligible toplay under 14 next year . St.Cillian’s were representing Offaly inthis competition for the second yearin a row .

Mountbellew-Moylough were St.Cillian’s host club on this occasion .The conditions in east Galway wereatrocious for their matches on Fridayand Saturday . Cillian’s first matchon Friday was against their hostsclub . Played in a downpour andagainst a strong wind , Cillian’sfound it difficult to adjust to the con-ditions and only held a slender leadat the end of the first half . Withinfive minutes of the second half allthat had changed , thanks to a purplepatch which saw Sarah Hardingknock in a couple of goals . Thematch ended 7-6 to 0-0 in favour ofCillian’s .

With no let up in the dreadful weath-er , Cillian’s travelled to Cappatag-gle to play two matches . Waterlodged on the surface area through-out the entire pitch which madecamogie difficult . Cillian’s playedconfidently from the beginning andit was no surprise that they cameaway with a comfortable win : 5-2 to0-0 . In their final match Cillian’swere up against a much bigger and amore physical Down team . The ref-eree , who was down to officiate atall four group matches refused toreferee this match due to the” un-seemly behaviour” of some Downsupporters and players . Cillian’sagreed to play the match under asubstitute referee . The doggedness ,attitude and work rate of the 15 St.Cillian’s players saw them comeaway with a well deserved narrowvictory : 1-2 to 0-1 . Sarah Hardingscoring the goal and Cailin Fitzger-ald (Capt) , the 2 points.

It was on to Kilkiniron for the divi-sion 2 semi-final with Croughwellat 5.30 on Saturday evening , 3rdmatch of the day for both teams .With the pitch in excellent shape , itwas hoped that the match could beplayed in clear conditions and thank-fully for an hour or so that was thecase . This was an enthralling match

played by two excellent teams .Craughwell got the start every teamwishes for and had Cillian’s underextreme pressure for the first 10mins in which they scored 2-1 with-out reply . The fighting spirit of St.Cillian’s came to the fore for the re-mainder of the half in which theymanaged to claw their way back toequal the score by half-time. At theend of the second 20 mins . theteams were still level :2-4 to 3-1 .Extra time , of 5 mins each half wasplayed but with only one pointscored by each team the tie was stilldeadlocked . This lead to suddendeath – the first team to score wouldbe victorious . Chloe Costello madesure that would be St. Cillian’s withthe winning score – a goal . Only 5years in existence , St. Cillian’s hadreached their first Feile final .

Pearse Stadium , was the venue forthe 12 noon division 2 final againstSixmilebridge . Played in ideal con-ditions and on an excellent surface ,this match was a classic encounter .St. Cillian’s were not overawed bytheir much bigger opponents andwere soon into their stride compet-ing with great enthusiasm and nolittle skill with Sixmilebridge .“Man” of the match Sarah Hardingscored a wonder gaol from what

seemed an impossible angle , some-thing she did many times throughoutthe weekend , a score whichbrought Cillian’s a 4 point lead intothe break . This lead was wiped outafter 10 mins of the second half andthings looked ominous for Cillian’swhen Sixmilebridge pointed to gointo the lead. Then the “Sarah Hard-ing” factor came into play – anotherwonder goal from an even moreacute angle but at the opposite sideof the field . A point by another classplayer , Aisling Brennan , sealed thewin with a point in the dying min-utes. Victory for St. Cillian’s 4-3 to3-3 – a win which was proceeded byunbridled joy , hugging , back slap-ping and celebrating by the hugesupport from the Carrig,Riverstown ,Killeen and Ballingarry . Captainof St. Cillian’s , Cailin Fitzgerald ,accepted the plaque , on behalf ofthe 24 St. Cillian’s players .E.Cashen , L.Hoctor , S. Killeen , E.Harding , S.Ryan, A.Brennan ,M.King , N. Killeen , A.Freeman ,R. Dolan , C.Fitzgerald , O. Plunkett, S. Harding , C.Costello ,D.Hanamy , M. Maher , N.Dolan ,Isobel Cavanagh , K.Corrigan , E.Cleary , B.Ryan , Aisling Larkin ,E.Kelly.

Padraig Harrington - coming back into form! The national media will tell you Padraig Harrington'sbest days are behind him. But his showing in lastmonth’s US Open would suggest otherwise. WorldGolf is now at its most competitive, with Tiger Woodsproblems showing no sign of coming to an end(yesterday he said he might miss The Open Champi-onship at Royal St. George due to further injury prob-lems). There isn't a dominant figure in world Golfanymore, every competition and certainly every Majorthere is 20 to 30 guys who really believe if they hitform they can win it.

Harrington hasn't had the best couple of years but i believe he has turned acorner. After his major wins in 2007-08 he felt he needed to change part ofhis game. While he was criticised widely for this, the man knows what ittakes to be the best so while we can question his motives we must trust hisdecisions.

US OpenBefore the event Harrington was ranked 52 in the world. Condisering all thenegativity and bad press not really a bad position. Out of the 51 playersranked ahead of him, 20 didnt make the cut, 3 players didnt attend, he fin-ished higher than 4 more an his +5 overall equalled that of Luke Donald (1)and Robert Karlsson (17). The stats show that he finished better than 24 play-ers higher ranked than him in the world at present.

On the PGA Tour this year, while he hasnt been setting the world alight, hehas still made cut 9 out 12 competitions. Even last week at players eventoverall he shot a -4 which was only good enough for T63. This doesnt meanhe is playing bad, it just shows the high standard of golf in the world atpresent.

EarningsSince his career has started he has won $19,865,523 (including major wins)on the US PGA Tour. He has also earned over €10,000,000 in prize moneyfrom European Tour. You dont't earn money like that being an average play-er.

Harrington believes the changes he has put in place were fully justified and iagree. Come July 14th - 17th at Royal St.George he will go in search of his3rd Claret Jug. Only a fool would rule him out at this stage.

While alot of hype surrounds Rory McIlroy after an amazing US Open, wemust remember that he has only won 1 European tour event and 1 US PGAtour event. Harrington on other hand has won 11 times on European tour and3 times on US PGA. He also finished 2nd on 15 occasions in Europe. I acceptthat McIlroy is only starting off on his career and Harrington hasn't won anevent in Europe or USA since 2008. But this man kinows how to win, he hasbeen there and done it all. Mentally i feel he is getting back to where he wasin 2007-08, barring an injury i fancy him to be well in contention come July17th!

My Betting Tips (€5 each way on all)Harrington 33/1Robert Rock 125/1Ross Fisher 50/1Sergio Garcia 20/1Chris Wood 66/1

Munster Hurling Final 2011

It remains to be seen whether this Tipperary team can reach the high stand-ards that they set last September. They weren’t convincing against Cork butwhen the pressure came on they did what they had to do.The semi final win against Clare was the same, when they needed to pick itup they managed to at their ease. What impressed me in the Clare game waswhen changes needed to be made they were done quickly and no messingfrom the sideline. This will be crucial later in the year when bigger gamescan be decided on such decisions. As for Waterford, they just about got over a Limerick team who I fancy tocause a big upset later in the year. They had five debutants against Limerickbut they seem to rely on John Mullane way too much. If Tipperary cut thesupply to Mullane and continue to score freely in their forward line then Iexpect Tipp to tear Waterford apart. I’m thinking 8 points or more on Sun-day.

David Haye – Just Not Good Enough!

I don’t like David Haye and I predicted thatWladimir Klitschko would beat him after 12rounds last Saturday night in Hamburg. Hayerepresents everything that I hate in sport, totaldisrespect, arrogance and a selfishness that fi-nally came to an end on Saturday. He was dominated by the big man Klitschkofor 12 rounds are never looked like causinghim any problems. In the build up to the fight Klitschko came across verywell. Extremely intelligent and a real champion and he never really reacted tothe rubbish Haye presented in the press conferences before the fight.David Haye is a serious athlete, but what is the need for all the antics? Itmight have worked against an apponent like Audley Harrison but it was nev-er going to upset Klitschko. If he had concentrated on his own game planand kept his mouth shut then we would have a lot more respect for him. Howmany people would step into the ring with men 2 and half stone heavier thanthem! But his arrogance and bad attitude outweighed his bravery.Haye will use his broken toe as the reason for his defeat, and maybe he has apoint, but does anyone really feel sorry for the Englishman? I certainly don’t!

Unless a baby suffers from colic, which isa condition that exhausts parents and baby, the mother should try and get some sleepwhile the baby sleeps. This can only bedone if other household members share thehousework. At any rate she has to come tothe realisation that she cannot do every-thing, and, she must let go of the expecta-tion that everything must be done. Herhealth is the most important, and care mustbegin with the self. Mothers are inclined toneglect themselves, and more so whengripped by post-natal depression. But, thefact is that a mother who neglects herselfcannot really take care of others, includingher new baby.Because depression makes us withdrawinto ourselves there is always the dangerof a depressed mother withdrawing fromher relationship with her partner. This ismade worse by the amount of time that anew baby demands. It is important for themother to try and make some time forherself and her partner. Obviously this willrequire a lot of co-operation from her part-ner.My experience of talking with motherswho suffered, or are suffering, post-nataldepression is that they worry a lot. This isparticularly true of new mothers. Theyworry excessively about the simplestthings as they contemplate their new frag-ile infant, and they need much support tobuild their confidence. This lack of confi-dence is made much worse by depression. It is very important to have someone withwhom to discuss worries or anxietiesabout how to manage a new baby. While I have said that depressed peopletend to withdraw, I would advise a mothersuffering from post-natal depression toavoid those who upset her. God knows,it’s hard enough to struggle through de-pression without being further burdenedby others. Indeed, I would go further andsay that it is good to avoid as many extrapressures as possible.Looking after a new baby in the first fewmonths is exhausting. Staggering out ofbed in the early hours of the morning to ahowling baby is no joke. Feeding this newand demanding human at 3 o’clock in themorning can be energy sapping. The babybegins to suck with much enthusiasm, andthen falls asleep and the mother has to waitor gently nudge it to wake up again andcontinue feeding. So, when the baby startsto sleep through the night is a good time tobegin thinking about diet and exerciseprograms. Exercise, fresh air, and diet willimprove the depression, and help self-es-teem. Exercise is one of the key elementsin handling any type of depression. If post natal depression is interfering witha mother’s ability to take care of her baby, that doesn’t make her a bad mother. Itmeans she has a complaint that needstreatment. Therapy is probably the besttreatment, if all else fails. Certainly, Iwould not suggest that a mother go downthe antidepressant road.Let us now explore antenatal depression.According to AWARE it afflicts up to15% of women. This depression strikes in

the first three months of pregnancy, andrates of depression are higher during preg-nancy than at any other point during awoman’s life. Two thirds of women witha history of recurrent depression will re-lapse during pregnancy. Antenatal depression can be most severeif the women sufferers are having maritaldifficulties, or having doubts about havingthe baby. Women, who have had abortionsin the past, sometimes suffer antenataldepression, when they become pregnantagain. Some writers claim that there is noconnection between antenatal and postnatal depression, although, as I have saidalready, half of those who get antenataldepression suffer depression during thepregnancy. It seems that antenatal depression is alsoassociated with poor medical care duringpregnancy or childbirth, especially if thebaby is premature. Foetuses may also beharmed because of the behaviours some-times associated with depression such assmoking and alcohol. If the mother suffersfrom long-term depression the effect canbe serious for the child. Long-term depres-sion can lead to slow foetal growth andpremature labour. They also state that suchmothers may not be able to bond with theirinfants, and such babies are less sociallyresponsive than babies of non-depressedmothers. I feel that this can lead to feelingsof abandonment and the lack of a secureattachment (how effectively we bond withothers, especially our mothers). This isreflected in adulthood as a lack of self-esteem and a relationship tendency to be-come attached rather than fall in love. Thiscan lead to all kinds of problems includingthe inability to access feelings (apart fromguilt, shame and rage), a tendency to bejealous, and the probability of being‘burned’ by any emotional connection.Continued in next issue.
