Your Opinion Counts...

Dear Parents,

Today is the launch of our annual online school survey which covers all aspects of our school’s performance and helps us measure progress and identify areas for improvement.

Your opinions and perspectives about the school you have chosen for your children are very important to us, and each year we ask all members of our community take part in our School Climate Survey.

It went online today and all parents should have received an individual notification with instructions. Thank you for your participation.

It will take only about 15 minutes of your time, but the insight we will gain from your participation alongside parallel surveys amongst our students (Grades 6 to 12), our entire faculty and our Board of Directors will be invaluable.

This is the fourth year that we have used survey. This year it has been updated and is available in 12 languages online. The survey is used by all schools accredited by CIS (Council of International Schools), and we look forward to sharing the results of this data with you upon completion of the process. A full report will be posted on the portal and links will be sent to all parents.

The survey which is designed and conducted by an external research agency, used by our accrediting authorities, CIS (Council for International Schools) and WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) will be available to:

Approxiamtely 1300 Parents 500 students (Grades 6 to 12) 141 Faculty members 9 Board Members

The survey will remain open for two weeks and we will provide plenty of opportunities to assist any parents who need help.

We look forward to finding out how every one of you feels about all areas of your child’s learning experience.

If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact our Director of Advancement, Emma Silva: [email protected] or call (04) 3758 1551 ext 8712.

Thank you in advance for helping us with this very important work,

Respectfully,

Dr Chip Barder, Head of School

Notes from the Middle/High School Principal

Dear MS/HS Families,

The MSHS has just finished “Spirit Week” which saw students dressed in Red in support of Vietnam, favorite fictional characters, Halloween spooks, hippies, and finally zombies. As an educational function I cannot say it was a meaningful event unless we site MSHS Librarian Joyce Miller’s recitation of “Green Eggs and Ham!” But as a community builder it was a spirited week and a great way for students and teachers to let off a bit of steam at the end of a rigorous academic quarter. UNIS Hanoi has been a beehive of activity over the past week. Six international schools from around the globe were on campus last weekend to participate in our annual Swim Meet. More than 60 swimmer were involved in spirited competition which culminated in a fun filled BBQ and dance Saturday night. Thank you to all parents who hosted students and/or supported the event. Our women’s and men’s volleyball teams competed in APAC championships last weekend and both teams earned sportsmanship awards. UNIS Hanoi teams fought hard during every match and earned the respect of both opposing players and coaches. After a narrow loss to host school Taejon Christian International School the men’s team bounced back with a stunning victory over Shanghai American School. Well done players and thank you to our coaches. For your information the first quarter marking period finished on Oct. 26. Teachers are now compiling grades and will download them to ISIS by the end of this week. Once downloading is complete you will be given access to Report Cards. Report Cards will be available on ISIS at some point during the week of November 5. More details will follow including ISIS log-in and Report Card access information. Warm regards,

Pete Kennedy, Middle/High School Principal [email protected]

Mathematics Consultant Visits UNIS Hanoi

We are very excited to be welcoming Cindy Chapman, a Mathematics consultant, to the UNIS Hanoi campus from November 5-8. Cindy will be providing professional development for our Elementary teachers and our Middle School Math teachers. Cindy will also provide two workshops for parents. The focus of the two parent sessions will be the same, but we have planned a morning and an evening session in hopes that one of these times will better suit your schedule. Over the four days Cindy will be observing teachers, modeling lessons in classrooms, holding coaching discussions with groups of teachers and providing feedback to our Math Curriculum Review Team. Cindy comes with a wealth of experience from both a teaching and leadership perspective. In her teaching career Cindy won

a national Presidential award in the United States for teaching Mathematics. Cindy served on the Board of Directors for the

National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) from 2000-2004. After a thirty plus year career Cindy is now an

independent writer and consultant.

Invitation to the Parent Sessions

Please join our Mathematics consultant, Cindy Chapman as she conducts an interactive session with parents, which will focus on the use of questioning to uncover students’ understandings and misconceptions in the area of numeracy. Professional Development Days for Teachers - November 12 & 13

On November 12 and 13 all UNIS Hanoi teachers will participate in on-site professional development that will be led by our consultant Mark Church. Mark’s work focuses on issues of developing understanding, thinking, and learning - knowing that when teachers are a part of a rich culture of thinking, their work with learners often mirrors the same. Prior to his consultancy work Mark Church was a teacher in both elementary and middle schools for thirteen years. His experiences have included teaching positions in the United States, Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands. Outside of the classroom, Mark has taught online courses and has coached several study groups of teachers across many different grade levels and subject areas exploring big issues of teaching, learning, and building understanding. More recently, Mark has been involved in Harvard University’s ‘Project Zero Visible Thinking’ research - examining the role of thinking opportunities and the impact this has on establishing significant learning experiences for students in K-12 classrooms. Mark serves as a consultant for schools across the globe and we are very excited to have the opportunity to work with him. Mark is also going to provide a session for parents - please see the invitation below!

A Culture of Thinking - What is the Story of Learning in This Place?

Dear Parents, Please join us for a special presentation by our Visible Thinking consultant, Mark Church. Mark will work with parents on the concept of ‘Visible Thinking’ - what this looks like in the classroom and how it can impact student learning. This is a session not to miss and is relevant for parents D-12!! When: Wednesday, November 14 Time: 8:00-9:30am Where: Community Room

We hope to see you there!

All UNIS Hanoi staff will talk regularly with our students about Tablet safety and security. You can help us ensure that our students have a good experience with the Tablets provided by having regular discussions with your student regarding the Tablet program.

As a first step I would ask that you take some time to inspect the power supply for your student’s Tablet. I have noticed that several students wrap the cords tightly around the power supply as illustrated by the picture on the left. Wrapping the cords in this manner creates stress on the ends of the cords and the insulation often begins to crack. Obviously the cracked insulation creates a safety hazards.

Please ask your students to wrap the cords as illustrated in the example on the right. Less stress is placed on the ends of the cords; consequently, the insulation is less likely to crack. Cracked insulation occasionally happens on the brick end of the power supply. I am less concerned that this may represent a safety hazard because this is the low voltage end of the power supply. However, please check carefully and if you note any cracked insulation send your child to the Tech Support Office for IMMEDIATE replacement of the power supply. Of greater concern for me is the high voltage end of the power supply – the power cord. I have witnessed a few instances of cracked insulation near the ends of the power cord. In most cases the cracks have been near the brick end of the power cord as indicated in the picture on the right. Once again, if you detect ANY cracked insulation on the power cord please send your student to the Tech Support Office for IMMEDIATE replacement of the power cord. Replacement of either the power supply or the power cord will be immediate and at no charge. Edward L Gilbreath, Director of Technology [email protected]

Walk-a-thon

Every $100 raised by Team UNIS Hanoi sends one more child to school

United Nations International School Hanoi Walkathon to benefit Blue Dragon Children's Foundation

Thursday, 15th November at 1:30 pm

If you get 8 sponsors at 20,000 VND per lap and you walk for 25 laps, you will raise 4,000,000 VND (200 USD) to keep one child in school for two years

Let's keep children in school - where they belong!

Did you know? ● Children in Vietnam go to

school six days a week in a morning or afternoon session.

● Most school days start with a test!

● Every year over 100,000 children drop out of school in Vietnam.

● That's because they can't afford the school fees, or it is too far to travel to school, or their family is very poor and needs them to earn income.

● Since 2003, Blue Dragon have

sent 2,551 children back to

school and training.

APAC Volleyball

Over the last few days UNIS Hanoi teams took part in the prestigious APAC volleyball hosted by Taejon Christian International School (TCIS) in Daejon, S. Korea. In this division of APAC there are six Schools: TCIS (hosts), Western Academy Beijing (WAB) Shanghai American School Pudong (SAS-PD), Hong Kong International School (HKIS), Seoul Foreign School (SFS) and of course United Nations International School of Hanoi (UNIS Hanoi).

Competition consisted of a round robin play for ranking and play-offs to determine finalists: 1st and 2nd place automatically get into the semifinals, and are joined by winner of 4th vs 5th and winner of 3rd vs 6th.

BOYS

The Boys first game was against the hosts TCIS and UNIS Hanoi had a good showing in this game only losing 25 – 27 in both sets. The second game, against SFS the eventual champions, was a lot tougher and it did end up being the only game where we did not get close enough to the opposition – losing 11 – 25 and 15 – 25. Our third game and last of the first day, was against WAB and again UNIS Hanoi fought extremely hard and took the first set 25 – 20 but lost the next two 17 – 25 and 16 – 25.

On the second day the boys were to come back more determined than ever before and played SAS-PD in a thrilling 3-setter in which UNIS Hanoi prevailed winning first set 25 – 21, losing the second 25 – 15 but winning the third and decisive set 25 – 22. This result was later significant in determining the round robin rankings with both teams with one win and 4 losses – although SAS-PD had won more sets than UNIS Hanoi at the end of the round robin, it was the head to head that counted to have UNIS placed 5th and SAS-PD 6th. UNIS Hanoi lost the other two games of the second day – last game of round robin play against HKIS was 2 – 1 to HKIS and the play off was against hosts TCIS in which UNIS Hanoi lost 3 – 0(11 – 25, 23 - 25 and 20 – 25) in a bets of 5 game. This meant that UNIS Hanoi had to play in the 5th /6th playoff against WAB (who had lost to SAS-PD in their play-off). In the last game, we just came short with a 3 – 0 loss to WAB, but in what had become the trade mark of the team in the tournament – fighting all the way to the last point of the match. This combined with a general sportsmanly behavior earned the team the Sportsman Award of the tournament, as did the girls team.

In general the team had a great tournament and the team feels it achieved most of the objectives that it set out to achieve before the trip. They showed good character all the way and when we lost, we did so with our heads held up high, knowing that we gave it our whole. As coaches we are very pleased with the progress made by the team since the beginning of the season and are already looking forward to the next event, which we will be hosted at our very own School! With only one member of this team coming for the Senior year and quite a number of freshmen (grade 9’s) in the team, we have a very bright future of the game in the School. The coaches already beginning to think of ways in which we can offer support to the boys through the year to keep the development of the programme and hopefully we can take the team to the next level of challenge come next year.

GIRLS

Never has that old adage “It’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game” been more true than in the girls’ division at last week’s APAC Volleyball Tournament. Our UNIS Hanoi volleyball players brought the best out of every team they played, forcing them to play their hardest in order to take a game off our team. Throughout the tournament, our girls played well, stayed positive and supported each other both on and off the court. Many opposition coaches commented on how well our team was playing and how tough they were to beat. In addition, the UNIS girls were the loudest cheerleaders when other teams were playing and made many new friends. We are so proud that they were awarded the Sportsmanship trophy; an award that every APAC school holds in the highest regard. Our congratulations to each and every girl on the team!!

A special mention goes to Laura Ramoso who was named to the All-APAC team for her outstanding play and leadership. Congratulations, Laura!

Well-done Phoenix. Pictures and more detailed results can be found on the APAC Volleyball site.

APAC Choir

APAC Comes To UNIS Hanoi On November 15-17 UNIS Hanoi will be hosting its first APAC event as we welcome students from five other APAC schools to the APAC Choir Festival. We are honored to have Mr. Graham Sutcliffe as the guest conductor. Mr. Sutcliffe has conducted over 150 concerts at the HCMC and Hanoi Opera Houses, where he has been responsible for a variety of programmes of symphonic, operatic and choral music and is currently Resident Conductor and Arts Advisor at the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet. Students will spend 3 days working as a mass choir with the guest conductor in preparation for the Festival Concert on Saturday night. In addition to performing as a mass choir, each school will also perform individually in the opening part of the performance. Joining our UNIS Hanoi students, will be guests from Hong Kong International School, Seoul Foreign School, Shanghai American School – Pudong, Taejon Christian International School and Western Academy of Beijing. In total 80 visiting students will be in Hanoi for the festival. Host Families - the school community is looking for UNIS Hanoi families who would be willing to provide accommodations for our guests. APAC is based on providing homestay accommodations for all events. We prefer to keep guests together in pairs, but singles can also be arranged. Guests will be in Hanoi for four nights. Please contact the UNIS Hanoi Activities Office as soon as possible if you are willing to assist in this effort – [email protected]. Dirk Kraetzer, Director of Activities

Energize

Dear parents, As we informed you last week in the school’s Tin Tuc, Hanoi residents are suffering from an infestation of Rove Beetle. These small noxious ants can cause significant irritation when their toxin comes into contact with skin. (See p.17 for further details). Since they are flying insects and attracted by lights, we are finding numbers of them each morning in the pool area. Despite a cautious use of pesticides some of these ants are still alive and as such are posing a threat to the wellbeing of our students. We therefore plan to close the pool at sunset each evening until the situation improves. This means that Energize swimming will be confined to early morning and weekends until further notice. We will be working with staff to ensure this situation is carefully monitored and please watch this space for any further updates in Energize opening hours. Please accept our apologies for this inconvenience and be assured that the decision has not been taken lightly. Dirk Kraetzer, Director of Activities

From the Nurses’ Office...

ROVE BEETLE FACT SHEET UNIS Hanoi continues to see the rove beetle around the campus, especially the pool area. The pest control company continues to work very closely with UNIS Hanoi to spray the affected area safely and effectively. Chemicals used to spray are produced by BAYER and are safe for humans and animals. It is important to note that this beetle has been seen throughout Hanoi, therefore be on the lookout at home; they are especially drawn to the light at night. DESCRIPTION: The Rove Beetle presents with different colors and is small, (7mm to 1.2cm in length 2-3 mm wide). It has a black head with an orange thorax (immediately behind the head). The body is mostly black with a shiny metallic black area that conceals its folded wings and a distinct broad orange band towards the tapered tail. Also may appear as iridescent blue color. The Rove beetle can be found at the edges of fields around grassed areas, near water and vegetable fields. They have also been found in homes in and around Hanoi. Favourable conditions can lead to localized populations explosions for short periods. During daytime, the beetle will be seen crawling around the ground swiftly with hidden wings, resembling ants. At night the beetles are attracted to light sources and will fly and land on objects near the lights. PUBLIC HEALTH IMPORTANCE: The beetle contains a poisonous animal contact toxin, that is released when crushed. If you crush the beetle the toxin is released and absorbed by your skin. The beetle can be crushed if you swat it like a mosquito or if it collides with you at speed (such as bare skin or on a motorbike) and can cause conjunctivitis, severe dermatitis and serious skin irritation. Initial symptoms include reddening of the skin and a, ‘burning sensation’, this is followed by painful irritation and itching with extensive pustules and blisters on the skin. The affected areas may remain irritated, blistered and sore for 10 days. Toxin on the hands, can spread toxin to other areas of the body and other people. PERSONAL PROTECTION: Do not touch the beetles. Blow or wash beetles off your skin. Minimise lighting in infested areas at night. Wear long sleeved and long legged clothing to minimize exposed skin. Have bottles of soapy water handy for first aid and then use cold compresses, antihistamines or Aloe Vera to alleviate symptoms. Avoid secondary infections in blistered areas. Seek medical attention for severe skin reactions to the toxin.

UNIS Hanoi Book Fair - Q&A & Key Dates From November 7 we’ll start collecting books for the annual UNIS Hanoi SCO Book sale, to be held on Friday November 30, 9am-4:30pm and Saturday December 1, 9am-12.30pm. Below are some Questions and Answers (Q&As) about the event. Q: WHY is the book sale held? (Primary Aim) A: Because books are wonderful and we all enjoy getting new books to touch, feel and, of course, read! It’s exciting to be able to find pre-loved books in our native (or other!) language at an affordable price (all books will be sold at 10,000 or 20,000VND). It’s empowering for children to be able to choose and buy their own books (and affordable for parents to give them this freedom!) As a new initiative this year, every ES, ECC and MS homeroom teachers will be provided with two vouchers each courtesy of the SCO to ‘spend’ on two children’s books that they feel would be great for their reading corner, UOI, etc. (not personal use). Q: What happens with the money raised? A: Money from the book sale is combined with money raised from other SCO events. These funds are used for ongoing charitable concerns each year; non-ongoing projects applied for through a grants process each year; as well as supporting some UNIS Hanoi community-building events. For further information read p.19 from last week’s Tin Tuc (26 Oct) or contact [email protected] . BOOK COLLECTION DETAILS Books will be collected in all ECC, ES and MS Homerooms from November 7, with prizes for the ECC, ES and MS class that collects the most books. There will also be two drop off locations for HS. We’d like books for any age group, any language – just ensure they are sellable! Further details about the sale will be circulated nearer sale day. In the interim, please contact Peppi & Lori with questions/ offers of help (if you’re not already signed up!): [email protected]

discussed what books they wanted to buy. Would there be books

Ms Michelle, PreK

“The book sale was great! We could buy so many great books.”

APPLY FOR FUNDS FROM THE SCO! The UNIS Hanoi Shool Community Organisation (SCO) accrues funds through many of the fun activities organised and strongly supported by the wider UNIS Hanoi Community. What are some of the things this funding is used for? Over the past few years the SCO has provided funding for many successful projects and purchases, such as the Nhat Tan Music Scholarships, outdoor seating around Canteen, UNIS Hanoi Community Garden project, Service Learning projects such as Operation Smile and Peace Village, and many more! Would you like to organise a project or require funds for something, or have a special idea? To make all members of the community have an opportunity to access this money, and that the process is transparent, once again the SCO would like to extend an invitation to any students, teachers, staff, parents, school groups to apply for funding for a project for the 2012-13 school year by completing and submitting the application form and the budget form by November 23rd.
