Hi Everyone!

We arrived in Sydney at last to be met by my son and granddaughters, Amelie, nine and Mia, seven. Then we headed for the Whitsundays and renewed our acquaintance with the giant crocodile. This time we watched him being fed, a chilling experience. His keeper perched on an overhang and dangled chicken pieces on a stout rod well above McCulloch’s head (he is named for a chainsaw!). The crocodile didn’t move even his eyes as the titbit was lowered. Then there was a horrid roar, he leapt four or five feet into the air and the chicken was gone.

One night a kangaroo got confused by the restaurant lights and bounded onto Brian’s just vacated chair, looked round wildly and headed for the open via four tables, lots of crockery and a good deal of food. The kids were convinced the ‘roo’ had done it on purpose!

Then there was the boat trip when a turtle surfaced just beside us, looking outraged, the flying foxes coming home to roost each evening, a possum and her baby caught in the headlights, all astonished golden eyes, and the birds, some kind of tiny parrot, nesting within six feet of the kitchen window...

Only another fortnight though, then it’s back to my current book, so I must make the most of Amelie and Mia whilst I can.

Have a lovely Christmas!

All best wishes,

A Christmas to Remember – a heartwarming story of love and survival – available in paperback from Morrisons from 7 November 2013

As Gran had foreseen, they had not had a cooked meal for almost three days and had worked like slaves to make sure that their Christmas would be a good one. When Tess had finished hanging up the paper chains she had made in school, she was very tired and knew Gran must feel the same, but she knew also that this did not matter. What mattered was having a Christmas to remember – a grand peacetime Christmas – which they could enjoy talking about during the long, cold days of winter.

They had a frugal supper of Spam sandwiches, made themselves hot water bottles and took to their beds, and as she cuddled beneath the blankets, Tess realised that she had scarcely thought about the farm all day. Her home was here now, with Gran, and the two of them were a proper family. The Bells had been kind to her, had made her welcome, but they were not her own family; that was just her and Gran.

The realisation gave her a warm glow, for though she would miss her friends from the village as much as she would miss the Bell family, it was perfectly natural to do so. What had not been natural was the sore, uncomfortable feeling in the back of her mind that by being unable to keep her in Norfolk, she had been rejected by the Bells. She had told herself that Gran, being a relative, had been forced to take her in. But now she knew she was in her right place, and she snuggled down, already sure that the following day would be a good one

Tess very soon came to the decision that Mal had ditched, but that didn’t mean he had gone for a burton; indeed his squadron leader had seemed to think there was a good chance that Mal was alive and well. If so, he would either get home or be taken prisoner, and whichever it was, they should hear in a month or six weeks, possibly even sooner. The French Resistance, who helped aircrew who had gone down over France to get back to Blighty, always made sure that the British authorities knew of an airman’s survival as soon as was humanly possible, and as soon as a man became a prisoner of war his fellow countrymen were informed.

So she would stop thinking of herself as destined to be alone for ever, stop mourning Mal as gone. She would resolutely look on the bright side, wait for him, and plan for the moment they would be together again. She would throw herself not only into work, but into play too because that, she was sure, would be how Mal would want her to behave. She went to the cinema with Molly and joined the other girls at the village hop on a Saturday night. She began to keep a diary, especially for Mal, so that if he was a POW she could write him the longest letter in the world, detailing all her doings.

She told herself that this behaviour would see her through, and did her very best to remain calm and positive. She grew thinner, but she remained bright-eyed, calm and opti-mistic. She told herself that she was being tested, that she would not be found wanting.

And she waited.
