    Time is a great myth. It is a very important myth, a significant myth. If you inquire into its content, itdisappears. If time is a series of nowsnow, now,now , nowand you inquire into the content of now,now just disappears from being a length. It is no longera length of time. Now is not a length of time. Andnow which is not a length of time makes a length oftime. A series of nows make a length of time, likea series of points making a line. A single point occupies no space and a series of points make a length!This is what Vedanta is. That there is a length, thatthere is time, is not something we should be wearyabout, because it is magic. Time is magic, and therefore, you need to enjoy the time you have gotnow. A new year means you have one more year toaccomplish what you could not accomplish last year.And if you have survived without accomplishing lastyear, this year is not going to be difficult. Therefore,just enjoy the day, the time that is there right now.May this New Year be new all the time, fresh all thetime. Getting up every day it is a new day. The NewYear begins with a new day, the next day is a new day, the next day is a new dayagain new day of theNew Year. Then new day, new day, new daynewday. Let us keep it that way, new day. Happy NewYear 2012.

    The body identification is three-fold: aham,I am the body, mama, my body, and mahyam,

    body is for me. We practise karma yoga,selfless service, to neutralize mahyam. The

    body is put to rightful action withoutseeking results; the results are surrenderedto avara or the society at large. Just as thewind does not blow for its own sake, butfor the swake of the entire manifestation, soalso the faculties of the body and mindfunction not for our benefit alone, but forthe welfare of the entire humanity. Themama identity is neutralized by bhakti yoga,motiveless devotion. In the context ofdevotion, nama, prostration, is veryimportant. It means na me, not mine.Everything of this creation, including the

    body, be longs to avara. Then , theignorance that I am the doer is negated bydiscernment of Self as distinct (not different)from the body, which is the non-self. Thisis snya yoga.

    Upanti, the dousing of the fire, the fireof affliction. There are three kinds of tpa,affliction: dhytmika , related to thephysical body like ill-hdealth, dhibhautika,the suffering caused by raging sgtreet dogs,

    thieves etc., dhidaivika, problems likefamine caused by the gods. The heart is atpeace when these three fires are doused.

    Why the adjective parama, supreme orultimate, to upanti? When we sleep, allthe afflictions are gone and when we wakeup, the three types of afflictions come back.It is as if they are waiting for us to wakeup. Thus the nti, that we experience

    during sleep is brittle, not parama. In the

    waking state too, there are many methodsto reduce lthe agitation of the mind, e.g.taking tranquilizers. The agitation howevercomes back once lthe effect of the drugwears away. In fact, we often become moredistressed after such temporarily acquiredpeace of mind. It is like lighting, which

    briefly lights up objects in the dark anddisappears quickly. We want the real peaceof mind, not the ephemeral one.

    We seek permanent cessation of all sufferingand pain and that is moka, also callednirva. Va is suffering and nirva isfreedom from suffering. Freedom is mostlydescribed in negative terms. What it iscannot be deswcribed. It is not what is

    described in words. Therefore, what it isnot alone is described. It is freedom fromafflictions. It is conscious presence thattranscends all divisions. We just abide inthe self, I am, and discover that innersilence.

    It is not the silence per se that is important.The flow of thoughts is harmless if and onlyif the content of the mind is realized asunreal. As we take the content of the

    waking consciousness as real and as other,we psychologicall depend upon that contentfor self-fulfilment and happiness. And then,we try to manipulate the content as we seekpleasure and avoid pain. This is nothing

    but deeply ingrained ignlorancde andbondage.

    The floiw of thoughts acts as a screen thatcovers up the truth. The mind creates aworld for us and presents it to us on a

    platter every morning, and we accept thatas real and take ourselves to be a small partof that world. Unless we negate thisprojection of the mind, we cannot discoverthe gtruth. This subject-pobject division andplurality projected by te ignorant mind is

    mithy, unreal. To know the truth, we haveto step away from the mind and watch it;then, it automatically becomes calm andquiet.

    As we identify with the mind, we give areality to the object of its thoughts. Whilepaying attention to and invdesting interestin the objects of the world, we cannotrealize it as illusion. Withdraw yourattention, withhold your interest and draw

    back from the mind. Watch the mindconstantly. Be kind to it, but in anuninvolved way. This is yoga. Initially, theprogress is slow in yoga, and therefore,perseveringly withdraw from the thoughts.Be a witness to the mind, and the mind

    becomes pure. De-automatize every action.For instance, we talk mc while taking food,and deating becomes mechanbical. Stpptalking and experience fully the taste of thde

    dish. That is also yoga. Similarly, watchyourself while walking.

    When the mind is agitated, I am agitated,for there is no discrimination between gtheI and gthe mind. I am and I think arenot the same; they are diametricallyopposed to each other. I am is themotionless being, while thinking ischangeful. As we identify with the mind,we remain trapped in it. As we withdraw

    from the mind and start watching it, werealize that we are the knower of the mind.The mind is ketra, field, and all the objectsof thought are part and parcel of this field.

    In yoga, one should not contradict onesaelf.One should not increase the impurities ofthe mind or work at cross-purposes. As wepurify the mind by pryma or controlof the mind through regulated breathing,meditation, lkistening to the scriptures etc.,

    we should avoid impurities like hate,jdealousy, greed etc. at all costs. Once themind is pure, we will realize that we arenot the mind, but a witness of the mind.Since the mind is filled with the six-fold enemy such as greed, anger, jealoiusy, etc.,

    realizing oneself as the witness is notpossible. We have to know deep withinthat we are not the mind, and thustranscend the mind. We will be able totranscend the mind if and only if the mindis pure.

    An impure mind that ius attached to theworld holds us back. Antakaraa uddhior piurification of the mind, is the mostcrucial starting point. As the mind becomes

    pure, it becomes stvika in nature calmand quiet, loses its rjasa (hyperactivity)and tmas (dullness) burden. Then, onecan easily see oneself that he is not themind. One is the intelligence behind theintellect; one is prior to the mind. Thisinner space is a deep, unshakeable peace.This innder silence is gthe consciouspresence. It is not void, it is K.

    In K, there is the river Ganges. It isvimal, sanctifying. Water of theGanges remakins pure despite a lot of toxinsand chemicals that are dumped into it. Noother river has such power of self-purificvation. For example, it is relativelypure as the river enters the city of Kanpur,

    but the water becomes very dirty and toxicas the many tanneries of Kanpur dumptheir waste into the river; but within 10miles of leaving Kanpur, the water again

    becomes almost pure. The sealed Gangeswater remains pure for a very long time.The Ganges of K stands stands for theperennial manifestation of Atman, thetimeless Awareness, in the form of wakingconsciousness. The movement of the mindand the senses are the contrent of thatconsciousness.

    HOUSTON - Arsha Vidya Satsanga celebrated the Bhagavad Gita Jayanti andthe 80th birthday of Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswathi at Keshav Smrithion Sunday, 4th December. The eventconsisted of a laghu pooja to Lord Krishna,Gita chanting, singing and dancing ofclassical compositions of Swami Dayananda Saraswathi, a video presentation about the life of PujyaSwamiji and recognition of key people ofArsha Vidya Satsanga( AVS), andprasadabhojanam.

    Gita Jayanti is the day on which Lord

    Krishna did the teaching of Bhagavad Gitato the Pandava prince Arjuna on the

    battlefield of Kurukshetra.

    This day is celebrated by all spiritual seekersas the day of rededication to the study ofthe song divine- Shrimad Bhagavad Gita. Itfalls on the Shukla Ekadashi of theMrigashira Masa. Pandit Viswasankaran

    Kartick led the chanting of 108 names ofLord Krishna- Krishna Ashothara Namavali.

    This was followed by the brief Vedaparayanam and a vedic arathi. A group of

    children who are learning Bhagavad Gita atAVS chanted the Dyana shlokam of ShrimadBhagavad Gita. It was a very encouragingto see kids who are American born achievea good degree of proper Sanskritpronunciation. Then, the members of the

    various AVS Gita home study groupschanted the 10th and 15th chapters of theBhagwat Gita. AVS conducts Gita homestudy courses in Sugarland, Bellaire,Clearlake, and Jersey Village. Theorganization also conducts kids classes inSugarland and Jersey Village.

    Then, it was time to celebrate the eightieth

    birthday of Pujya Swami DayanandaSaraswati, a world renowed teacher ofVedanta, and the main inspiration behindAVS. Swamiji completed 80 years in

    August and this was celebrated by hisdevotees in a grand manner in India and inthe Arsha Vidya Gurukulam in Saylorsburg,Pennsylvania. The event is calledSatabhishekam in vedic parlance and

    comprises pujas, yagnas, and other ritualsto celebrate the joyous occasion.

    Sri Swami Dayananda among his manymultifaceted activities is a scholar and loverof both classical music and classicalsamskrutam. Hence, it came as no surprisethat he had composed many songs on thedieties of the Hindu pantheon as well as onVedanta. These are set to mellif1uous musicand had been popularized by many leadingclassical musicians in India and US. Thehighlight of these compositions are theharmonious synergy between concepts,words, music, and the emotions (bhava)sought to be conveyed by the song. A groupof Houston based singers and musicians gottogether to learn and perform thesecompositions as their personal tribute toSwamiji. The songs presented include BhajeVignarajam (Hamsadhwani), DakshinamurteAmurte (Ranjani), Shankaracharyam(Mohanam), and Ramam Bhaje (Durga).This was followed by a dance performanceof Pujya Swamijis composition by thestudents of Guru Padmini Chari. VarenyaHariharan performed Bho Sambho in Revati(one of the most popular pieces of Swamiji)

    and the Ramachandran sisters (Smrithi andSathvika) performed Bharata Desha Hitayain Desh (the theme song for AIM for SEVA).The singing as well as dancing moved theaudience very much.

    This was followed by a short video aboutthe life of Swami Dayananda Saraswathi. Itwas remarkable to watch the many

    achievements of Swamiji. He has been atraditional teacher of Vedanta teachingseveral students, founder of the All IndiaMovement for SEVA, the founder of ArshaVidya Gurukulam, given sanyasa diksha to

    several sadhakas, convener of HinduDharma Acharya Sabha, a composer ofsongs, a writer of several books, acounseller to several people, and above all,a compassionate person. When one gets toread or watch a life of such a noble soulwho give the entire life for the welfare ofhumanity without the least expectation, onerealizes that the message of Bhagavad Gita

    was not in vain. The entire audience washighly motivated after this and lot of peoplecommitted to a more serious studyof theBhagavad Gita and give more to humanity.The organizers then recognized thestudents, teachers, and the patrons of AVS.This was followed by Gita Arathi and asimple prasad.

    Prahalad Appaji said that for the first timehe learned of the Gita Jayanti, his wifeSmitha was impressed by Swamijisaccomplishments and that their children gotinterested in learning the new compositionsand that each in the family had becomepersonally enriched. It would be good toconduct a Houston-wide Gita Jayantiprogram, seeing that the Bhagavad Gita isa popular scripture, said G. V. Krishnan.

    Dr. Radhika Hariharan was particularlyimpressed with small children chanting theBhagavad Gita from memory! RohiniChandrashekar was glued to her seat allthrough the program. After seeing the full

    breadth of activities, Hirji and Ila Bhudiadecided to enroll their two children in theVedic Heritage classes at Jersey Village.

    Digvijaya Hemantha Shibhir Under The Guidance ofShri Swami Brahmayogananda

    19th to 27th November 2011 - YOGA SHANTHI GURUKULAM

    Somnath temple was attacked anddestructed by the Muslims 17 times and wasreconstructed each time. The Sagar Matha(The Sea Goddess) was witness to all theatrocities and the subsequentreconstructions. Now the same Sagar mathais facing this magnificently and gloriously

    reconstructed Somnath temple. In the verysame premises of this sacred and holy 1st ofthe Jyothirlingam shrines, Shri SwamiBrahmayogananda conducted 18 classes for121 of his students on Adi Sankaracharyastext- Sarva Vedanta Siddhanta SaaraSangraha for three days. The topics takenwere Samaadhanam, Uparathi andMumukshuthvam as part of SadhanaSathushtayam.

    During the inaugural function which waspresided over by Sri Kamlesh Raval,Deputy Secretary & GM, Sree SomnathTrust, the holy flag of this symbol ofRashtriya Gauravtha- Somnath temple washoisted (Dwajarohan) after Swamijiperformed a Puja to the Dwaja under theguidance of the Chief temple priest.Between 21st & 23rd Nov, students were

    engrossed in their Spiritual quest atSankirtan Hall of the Somnath templecomplex which is a Z Plus Security area.

    Sri A K Joti, Chief Secretary, Govt ofGujarat, participated in the Valedictoryfunction of the camp and honored Swamijiand Sri Vijaisinh Chavda, Deputy GeneralManager, Sree Somnath Trust also took partin this function. This camp created such an

    impact that the whole temple town was

    aware and talking about Swamiji and theclasses being taken. The trust managementwas so impressed by the discipline that theyhelped in the stay & food arrangements at

    Dwaraka. Yet another highlight was that theDeputy Secretary, a Gujarati, addressed thestudents in Tamil and one of Swamijisstudents spoke in Gujarati for thanks givingthereby denoting the spirit of Nationalintegration.

    After the 3 day camp at Somnath, on 24 thNov, the students were taken for BeytDwaraka darshan, Nageswaralinga (another

    Jyotirlingam) darshan and Dwarakadishdarshan. In Beyt Dwaraka, Swamiji calledfor all the Brahmanas in the small island of5000 people and asked them to take aSankalpam to perform their daily rituals likeNithya Puja and chanting of Gayathrimantra continuously for 3 years and by thisway, the 4000 muslims in the island wouldautomatically return back to Hinduism.     boat journey totally transformed on the wayback and asked for Swamijis blessings,merely by observing Swamijis attitude andactivities during the 3 hours at BeytDwaraka. Swamiji made contributions closeto Rs 1 Lac in this holy place of LordKrishna.

    On the last day of the camp (26thNov), Swamiji along-with 60 of his students

    met the Chief Minister of Gujarat, ShriNarendra Modi, for over an hour at hisofficial meeting place- Circuit house.Swamiji blessed Modi ji to lead a VibrantBharatham in the model of Vibrant Gujarat.After Swamijis inaugural speech, ShriNarendra Modi shared details on theachievements and development of the statein the fields of Agriculture, Electricity, etc

    over the last 10 years. Modi ji also

    enthusiastically responded to several nationbased questions posed by the students ofthe Gurukulam.

    This 1 week visit of Swamiji along-with his 121 students was well covered bymany Gujarat dailies and also speciallycovered in Shri Narendra Modis website.It is to be recalled that Swamiji took the

    blessings ofPujya Shri Swami Dayananda

    Saraswati at Anaikatti, just beforecommencing this historic camp. This wasyet another memorable camp for thestudents and for all those who wereassociated with it.
