YAHRZEIT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM OUR RABBI AND RITUAL COMMITTEE

Rabbi Adler will be announcing the names of all loved ones whose Yahrzeit (Jewish date of death) falls during the week to come. This will take place before the Mourner’s Kaddish prayer is recited each Friday evening and Sabbath morning. (Shabbat service times are listed to the left.) We encourage all family members who are commemorating a Yahrzeit to make an extra effort to attend Shabbat Ser-vices at least once either Friday night or Saturday morning to hear their loved one’s name recalled in our memorial prayer.

THE RABBI SPEAKS The festival of Shavuot is known as the Feast of Weeks. Yet we will be gathering as a community to acknowledge a cherished friend whose tenure can be categorized not by weeks, or even months, but by years. Twenty five years to be exact. It has been a privilege for me to have shared these last ten years with Vivien Grossman. I have observed her comforting nervous moms, bring-ing smiles to anxious toddlers, and directing our talented staff in a nurtur-ing, professional, and supremely effective way. Her mission has always been to create a warm, safe and stimulating atmosphere for growth and learning. She has also shaped the formative Jewish experiences of her children and families with love. How many lives have been transformed by this humble role-model? My estimate is literally tens of thousands. Children grown who are now parents have been blessed by the pretzels, compli-ments, smiles, and hugs of Vivien Grossman. 25 years is silver, but for anyone who has had the privilege of knowing her, it is truly golden. Kol Hakavod! Thank you Miss Vivien for an exceptional legacy of devotion.

This year Shavuot begins on the evening of May 23rd

. Shavuot is a holiday on which we commemorate the moment of G-d’s revelation at Sinai and the giving of the Ten Commandments to the Jewish people. For this reason, the holiday of Shavuot is also known as Zeman Matan Torahteinu, the moment of the giving of the law. Accepting the Ten Commandments, the Jewish people entered into a covenant with G-d. According to the covenant, we accept responsibility to live our every-day lives in a just, respectful and lawful manner. Thus, the experience of Sinai is translated into a continuous event: the revelation of G-d to the Jewish people continues to unfold each day, as any time a person studies Torah with dedication is a Zeman Matan Torah. Moreover, all students of Torah are con-nected to our tradition in a unique way, as a dedication to Torah uniquely links Jewish individuals to the continual process of revelation that began at Sinai. For the past two years I have had the privilege of teaching the adult Bat Mitzvah class and have been impressed with their commitment to learning. Together as a class, they exhibited a commit-ment to education and study. It was not easy for these students as adult learners to learn a new language, Haftorah and the many prayers they will lead our congregation during their Bat Mitzvah services. In the past two years they have succeeded in mastering these skills and have now developed a sense of comfort in our synagogue service. I urge all of our congregation as well as past adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah graduates to attend our service on May 9

th to show support for our adult Bat Mitz-

vah class. It is with great pride that I introduce to you the class of 2015:

When we return the Torah to the ark we sing the prayer Etz Chaim, the Torah is a Tree of Life for those who grasp it and all who uphold it are blessed. May our Bat Mitzvah class be blessed and continue to grow educationally and go from strength to strength. I thank each of you for the opportunity to teach you and look forward to sharing many Simchas together in the future. I wish all the students of my Bat Mitzvah class and their families a heartfelt Mazal Tov and a Chag Sameach to the entire congregation.

FROM THE PRESIDENT The conclusion of the religious school year is an exciting time, a time during which our congregation’s students and families enjoy the fruits of all their study and la-bor. This past Shabbat morning, April 25

th, our Dalet class led prayers during the

adult service in the sanctuary. Their enthusiasm was evident, as were the smiling faces of their family and friends. On Friday evening, May 1

st, it will be the Gimel

students who will “wow” us as they assist in leading Shabbat services, and on May 2

nd, the Bet class will do the same in our chapel. These events showcase the lead-

ership of our youth and are a testament to the religious school educators who prepared them. We hope you will join us. A few more upcoming events: Sunday, May 3

These events would not be possible without our Religious School Principal, Dr. Gerry Meisel, and all of the WJC religious school teachers. Yasher Koach on a job well done. Another individual worthy of our recognition is Vivien Grossman, our Nursery Director of 25 years, who will be retiring at the end of this school year. We will be honoring her on the afternoon of May 17

th. “Miss Vivien” has touched the lives of so many of our children and saying goodbye will be dif-

ficult. She is responsible for creating the outstanding Nursery Program that the Woodbury Jewish Center enjoys today. She has my love, admiration, and respect. We will all miss her. Thank you to Adrianne Roth and Robin Schorr for spearheading what will be a lovely event. We celebrate the B’nai Mitzvah of Cantor Cohen’s Adult Bat Mitzvah class on Saturday, May 9

th.

Mazel Tov to Erica Gindi, Rebecca Greene, Carol Konits, Judy Rosen, Lisa Sakhai, and Rhonda Segal. These women have spent two years learning the morning prayers and Haftarah and deserve our support. It’s a beautiful ceremony, and I look forward to seeing you there. Lastly, after years of putting it off, we will be replacing the entire parking lot, an expensive under-taking, but one well worth the investment. MEN’S CLUB NEWS As we are members of the NY Metro Region of Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs, WJC participated in their Man and Youth of the Year Honoree Dinner that was held on Sunday, March 29th at the Crest Hollow Country Club. I want to give a shout out to our 2015 honorees, Brian Smith and Jared Goff, for their splendid achievements on behalf of the WJC. Men’s Club held a successful wine sale prior to Passover, which went over very well. Thank you to those who participated. We also were pleased to provide the traditional breakfast for the fast of the first born on the morning prior to the first seder night. The Congregation received their Men’s Club sponsored Yom Hashoah Yellow Candle that was lit on Wednesday evening, April 15th in observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day in memory of the Six Mil-lion. We appreciate those of you who have made a contribution in support of this meaningful event and those who volunteered their time to help deliver them to our congregants. As for upcoming events: We are scheduling a golf outing at the Mill Pond Golf Course (in Medford) in July with Midway and

Plainview Jewish Centers Men’s Clubs. This will once again be an endeavor to expand our local com-munity in a meaningful way.

Additionally, save Saturday night July 11th, when we will hold our third annual summer barbeque with

dancing under the stars at the home of Adrianne and Eric Roth. If you attended last summer, you know what a wonderful event that was. We thank the Roths for opening their home once again. Ask your friends who attended to describe what an amazing night it was with friends, never ending food, open bar and a live DJ.

SENIOR’S GROUP-SAGE Spring has finally sprung, Pesach has come and gone, and we are all enjoying the sunshine and flowers. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday, and I look forward to filling you in on mine! Our next two meetings will be: Thursday, May 14th at 10:30 AM in the Kiddush Room Thursday, June 11th at 10:30 AM in the Kiddush Room Join us on May 14 as we celebrate Mothers Day with Elizabeth Kahn Kaplan, as she discusses the "Nine First Ladies From New York State". Ms. Kaplan is an educator, writer and lecturer, as well as the former director of education at the Three Villages Historical Society in Setauket, NY. This lecture is made possible by a grant from the NY Council for the Humanities.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS We are the people of “the Book.” We glorify and celebrate learning. We even created a “Scholars Holiday” – Lag B’Omer - to rejoice in our freedom to study and learn our sacred texts. We rebelled in ancient times when Emperor Hadri-an decreed “any Jew studying the Torah would be killed.” Millennia ago, on the 33rd day of the counting of the omer from Pesach, the Jewish people – under the military leadership of Bar Kochba and the spiritual guidance of Rabbi Akiba – successfully fought back against the Romans and the dark forces of oppres-sion. And so, Lag B’Omer – May 7, is a time for appreciating the sweetness of Jewish study. On Shavuot, May 24 & 25, we commemorate the giving of the Torah – specifi-cally the Ten Commandments – on Mt. Sinai. We brought our physical freedom from slavery to a new height of ethical, moral and religious freedom routed in the teachings of the Torah. Both of these holidays resonate loudly to us today to re-consecrate ourselves to study and participation in Jewish life. There are many school related events in May that afford us the opportunity to see the real evidence that study and learning about Judaism is actively impacting our children. On Friday evening, May 1, our 5th grade students will participate in Gimel Shabbat. They will lead many Hebrew and English prayers during the Friday evening service in the sanctuary. A gala oneg will follow in the Kiddush Room. Twelve hours later on Saturday, May 2, our Bet students will take charge of the Family Congregation service in the Chapel. They will chant the service and explain the significance of selected prayers. A special Kiddush-luncheon will follow in honor of our 4th graders. On Sunday, May 3, everyone is invited to a pre-Lag B’Omer field day at the Convent Avenue field opposite Our Lady of Mercy Church. Our students will enjoy sports, singing and snacking. If you are available to volunteer for this event, please contact the school office. We are grateful to the Strominger family for sponsoring this event. Hey graduation will take place on Monday evening, May 4, 7:30 pm. Our seventh graders will assemble in the sanctuary to offer a medley of sings and receive awards and diplomas. A commencement party will follow in the Kiddush Room. Two milestones for our children will be enjoyed during services on Friday, May 8. Tenth grade students in our Hebrew high school will be confirmed and students who are seniors will be recognized as they approach their secular high school graduation. Our final Family Congregation service will be held on Saturday, May 16 in the Chapel at 10 am. During the ser-vice, we will celebrate the birthdays of children born in the months of July and August. During the Kiddush, eve-ryone will have the opportunity to create their own ice cream sundaes. Our Alef students are excited about Consecration on Sunday, May 17. They will offer a cantata about the Jew-ish holidays and the Hebrew alphabet. Our third graders will receive certificates and will be presented with their own siddur, which they will use as a textbook during their coming years of study. A Consecration brunch will follow. An awards assembly will conclude the school year on Sunday, June 7. Students will be acknowledged for aca-demic achievement, attendance and participation in worship services. The above list of events is a great reason to rejoice with our children. Plan to attend many of these special events. Share the excitement. Kvell a lot. Jewish learning is a joy.

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS This is the time of year that acknowledgement and thanks are given to those people who make our nursery school the wonderful place that it is. For me, this is a very special year. After 25 years, I will be retiring at the end of this school year. I will miss all of you, but I look forward to opening a new chapter in my life. Cindy Common is our new director. She is a wonderful, warm, innovative, and competent educator. We feel so fortunate to have her in our organiza-tion. We wish her many happy and successful years. My thanks to my teachers for their dedication and hard work. They have touched my life both personally and professionally. I thank Rabbi Adler, Cantor Cohen, and Dr. Meisel for their commitment to building a foundation for Judaism in our school. Thanks to Linda Altman, Silvia Padron, Arnie Aprea and his crew, and Warren Aberbach and his security team for keeping us organized, safe and for always being there for us. So much appreciation goes to our Nursery School Parents Association for their never ending support. Molly Newman, Whitney Sigler, Kara Kaplan, and all of our involved parents are a pleasure to work with. I feel very blessed and honored to have shared 25 years with these wonderful people. Most of all, I thank our parents for trusting us and sharing their adorable and precious children with us. I wish all of our families healthy, happy, and peaceful years ahead.

MAY 2, 2015 Mazel Tov to Julie & Allan on the Bar Mitzvah of their son. Michael is in the 7th grade at HB Thompson Middle School. His favorite activities include baseball, basketball, and watching college football. “For my mitzvah project I chose to work with an organization called Lend a Hand, formally known as M’Yad L”Yad. Lend a Hand is dedicated to enhancing the lives of the needy in our community in an anonymous way. I also collected items such as sneakers, clothing and sports items to donate to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island.” Michael has two sisters, Sari age 16 and Casey age 9.

Her favorite activities include drawing, painting, playing musical instruments and spending time with friends and family. “For my mitzvah project I volunteered at Horseability, an organ-ization that uses therapeutic horseback riding to help disabled children and adults. This is a terrific organization my family has supported for many years. I spent my time caring for the horses, ad was happy to see all the good that the animals were able to do for people. Alana has a sister Sarah age 20 and a brother Ben, age 16.

Woodbury’s Youth have had a fan-

tastic year of programs and we look

forward to ending the school year

with lots of excitement. From working

with Hebrew names to matzah mak-

ing and Israeli art, when the kids get

together it’s always a fun time. Our

TeenCorp successfully completed a

season of volunteering with HIHI and personally helped

feed and care for some of Long Island’s homeless.

Coming up, our high-schoolers have multiple opportuni-

ties to support Israel and be involved in regional USY

events. Our PreKadima and Kadima kids have some

interactive programs coming up, fondue night for the

closest we can get to an indoor barbeque in honor of

Lag B’Omer and cheesecake making in time for Shavuot. Stay tuned for more information!

In case of an Emergency………. Your rabbi wishes to guide and be of assistance to you in your time of need. In cases of serious illness or the death of a loved one: Please call Rabbi Adler at 496-9100 X 125 or at home, 509-9481 Please note that you must call the Rabbi before finalizing funeral arrangements. On Shabbat or Yom Tov, Rabbi Adler does not use the telephone. Therefore, you can convey information to him on these days at the synagogue during service times, by calling immediately after Shabbat or Yom Tov.

The question has been asked: “Can the rabbi and/or cantor charge me for

performing a funeral for my parent or sibling?”

The answer is “Yes” they can. Neither the Rabbi nor the Cantor will charge for performing the Funeral of a

member or a member’s child. In this case a donation to the Discretionary Fund may be appropriate.

However the term “member” does not include parents or sibling. Thus either is permitted to charge a fee for offi-ciating at or participating in a funeral. While local Fu-neral homes, including Gutterman’s of Woodbury will

include or tell you at the time you make arrangements of the clergy charge, please feel free to discuss it with ei-ther Rabbi Adler or Cantor Cohen at the time you make

the arrangements with them.
