RABBI’S CORNER

Shabbat Parshat Bamidbar

Dear Young Israel Families,

This Shabbat is a very special one for

our community as we host our first ever YIEB

“Open House Shabbat!” We’re honored to have

20 families visiting us this Shabbat. One thing

that makes YIEB so special is the passion and

enthusiasm we feel about our Shul. This

weekend is a wonderful opportunity for us to

share and display our “magic” with other

families. Thank you so much to the many

people who made this Shabbaton a success.

On another note, I want to highlight

an important upcoming program we’re hosting

on Sunday morning, May 19th, 9:30-10:30 AM.

In partnership with the OU and NJ VOTES, we

will be having an East Brunswick Legislative

Breakfast. This will be an opportunity for us to

meet with our elected legislators in the NJ

Senate and Assembly. Making connections with

our elected officials is incredibly important for

our Shul. Further, sharing with them concerns

that our community faces, including the

challenge of tuition affordability, does make a

difference! Please come to help us show our

elected officials our strong and thriving

community. The event will be one hour long and

will include breakfast and babysitting. It is also

appropriate for children in middle school and

high school so please bring them along! Kindly

RSVP to Ruth Bash at [email protected].

Thank you!

Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Jay Weinstein

EAST BRUNSWICK LEGISLATIVE BREAKFAST

PLEASE RSVP NOW!

Sunday morning, May 19th at 9:30 AM at YIEB.

and state assemblyman Patrick Deignan. Come

to discuss important issues and voice an

opinion! Included in the topics of discussion will

be state funding for non-public school

education. For more information, please RSVP

to Ruth Bash at [email protected]

We would like to supplement our Kiddush Nosh

with healthy alternatives for our children. We

are looking for volunteers to purchase fruits and

vegetables before Shabbat and to cut up fruits

Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County

Honors 13 Past Presidents

CBS News Anchor and National Correspondent

Jim Axelrod to Emcee Event

SOUTH RIVER, NJ – On Thursday evening, June

6th, the Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex

County will honor its 13 past presidents for their

leadership and commitment to ensuring the

vitality of Middlesex County. The celebration will

take place at The Heldrich Hotel and George

Street Playhouse in New Brunswick.

Past Presidents to be honored and the years

they served are: the late Alvin Rockoff (1985-

1987), Larry Zicklin (1987-1989), James Stahl

(1989-1991), Susan Mandell (1991-1993), Ron

Grayzel (1993-1995), Marlene Herman (1995-

1997), Roy Tanzman (1997-1999), Kenneth A.

Gordon (1999-2001), Phoebe Wofchuck (2001-

2003), L Richard Wolff (2003-2005), Philip S.

Cantor (2005-2007), Lee Livingston (2007-

2010) and Arlene Frumkin (2010-2012).

“For the first time in our history, we will be

honoring all of the past presidents of the Jewish

Federation of Greater Middlesex County at one

major event. It is so meaningful to recognize

those who led in the creation of our vibrant

Jewish community,” said Federation president

Seth S. Gross. "We invite the community to join

us in showing support for the honorees who are

so deeply deserving, and for the humanitarian

work of the Jewish Federation.“

CBS News Anchor and National Correspondent

Jim Axelrod, a Middlesex County native, will

serve as the evening’s master of ceremonies.

“We are delighted to have Jim join us for this

wonderful evening,” said Don Sulam, a member

of the Past Presidents’ planning committee. “He

grew up in Highland Park and is keenly aware of

the important work done by the Jewish

Federation here in Middlesex County, in Israel,

and around the world.”

"We are creating a tribute journal for honorees

and guests, which will include ads and

congratulatory letters that have been pouring in

from friends of the Jewish Federation,” said

Federation executive director Gerrie Bamira,

noting an additional fund-raising aspect of the

upcoming Past Presidents’ Celebration. “The

journal will remain a timeless testament to

those who blazed the trail for the Jewish

community we now strive to support and

sustain.”

“Leadership is a responsibility first. When caring

people accept responsibility for helping to

identify what needs to be done and are part of

the getting it done, the honor associated with

leadership is well deserved,” said Gross, citing

the Jewish community's collective responsibility

to be role models to inspire subsequent

generations. “Recognizing Federation's past

presidents shows the admiration and respect

we have for those who led before us, and helps

us recommit ourselves to the selfless work they

began on our behalf.”

Funds raised at this event will support the

programs and services of the Jewish Federation,

which enhance education, social services,

community needs and emergency responses to

strengthen our local community. Tickets for the

Past Presidents’ Celebration are$150 per

person. To purchase tickets or place an ad in

the celebration journal, contact the Jewish

Federation of Greater Middlesex County at 732-

588-1800 or visit JewishMiddlesex.org.
