Principal’s Report
Congratulations to Shannon, Worimi, David, Bailey, Jemima and Anthony who received awards at the CEP Aboriginal Recognition Assembly last Thursday at Jesmond Senior Cam-pus. The children represented Tighes Hill PS with pride and en-thusiasm. Well done to you all!
Welcome back to Term 4 everyone! We have just one term re-maining of the school year, and the focus for all teachers and children is on consolidating Semester 1 outcomes in all Key Learning Areas, building on to achieve Semester 2 outcomes. The Term 4 Calendar included in this newsletter is filling up fast!
Thank you to the P&C for the wonderful new playground equip-ment. The students love it!!! A special mention to Ben Collis for his planning, organisation and delivery on this project – you’re a star!!
I want to congratulate all the children for the very settled way that they returned to school last week. They looked very smart and tidy in their uniforms. Please help us to keep children in school uniform – don’t forget to wear your hats.
Selective HS Test 2016
All current Year 5 children who wish to sit for the selective HS exam early next year (12/3/2015) will need to complete an online applica-tion by the 17th of November. Hard copies are available from school if you do not have access to internet. Please make sure you meet the deadlines as it is difficult to apply after the due dates. Practice test questions are available through the selective schools web site and I encourage children wishing to sit the test to access these. Par-ents must apply online at www.schools.nsw.edu.au/shsplacement
P&C
The next P&C meeting will be held on the 20th of October at 6.00pm. Please come along to hear about school direction and the changes planned for 2015. We are still looking for a parent/s inter-ested in volunteering for our canteen to help to share the load in providing a wonderful healthy service for the children. Please think about supporting our school through the many jobs that P&C and canteen offer.

Principal’s Report Kindy Club
Invitation letters have been sent out to all the enrolled kindergarten 2015 children and their families to attend our Kindergarten Orienta-tion Program. Dates for this program are planned for early Novem-ber to maximise attendance. If you know of any family that may have not yet let the school know of their intention to enrol please encourage them to contact school so that they can participate in these sessions. Our numbers for 2015 are tight and we would love to know well in advance so class placement and staff needs for a smooth start to 2015.
Captains 2015
Year 5 children will begin participating in a leadership program in preparation for the upcoming 2015 Captains and Vice-Captain Elec-tions in Week 5. During the leadership program Y5 children will be able to nominate/ be nominated for the first round candidates. They will then as a group, vote for the final 6 students. These 6 children can then begin to campaign and prepare their speeches that will be delivered before parents and the whole school on Wednesday 19/11/2014. K to Y5 will then vote for the boy and girl Captain while the other 4 children will become Vice-Captains. This process ena-bles all Y5 children to identify leadership skill and attributes, that they each possess and gives them confidence and ownership of the process of electing captains.
Swimming School
Swimming school will begin on Monday 27/10/2014 and will contin-ue for two weeks. The weather will warm up and I know that the chil-dren will enjoy acquiring vital water safety skills. Again hats and sun-screen is a must as the walk to and from the pool is in full sun for most of the way.
Enrolments 2015
To enable us to correctly estimate enrolments and staff the school appropriately for 2015, I need all parents enrolling children K-6 to complete enrolment forms and leave their details at the office ASAP. Please let me know of any neighbours and friends, who may not have children already at this school but will have school age children for 2015, we can then contact them and include them on our num-bers for next year. Thank you to all the parents who are promoting our school in such a positive way and encouraging all local families to enrol in their local school. Pianos
We currently have 2 pianos in our school not in use that we would love to see go to a good home. If you are interested in taking one or both of these, please see Mr Selwood.
Writing Finalists
Congratulations to Oliver and Sarah from the OC, who have been announced as finalists in the Sydney Youth Drop. Wind. Keep. Writ-ing competition. 4) will not be held during Term 4, 2014.
School News
PACER Rebate Stage 3 students from our school recently undertook an education tour of the nation-al capital. Students were given the oppor-tunity to participate in a variety of educa-tional programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship educa-tion. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Govern-ment is contributing funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
PICNIC IN THE PARK On Sunday, 19th October the Islington Baptist Church will be holding a picnic in Islington Park from 11.30 am to 1.30 pm. There will be a free sausage sizzle and games will be organised for the children. If the weather is unsatisfactory, the sausage sizzle and games will be held in the church hall. Come and enjoy the time with us.
2J3 Walking Street Art Excursion
On the last day of Term 3, 2J3 set out on a walking tour of Wickham to watch the creation of new street
art murals from local artists and also many from around Australia.
The art works where being sprayed on the industrial buildings in the industrial section of Wickham in be-
tween Hannel Street and Railway Street. The artists were working hard to beautify the area and bring
street art into the public eye in a positive way.
The students of 3/4J loved exploring the different displays and got to ask the street artists many ques-
tions about how they go about creating the displays and where the get their inspiration for the ideas they
create.

THERE ARE TWO EXCITING PROMOTIONS HAPPENING
THIS TERM.
SEARCH FOR AUSTRALIAS SMART SCHOOL SAVERS:
The Commonwealth Bank recently measured the savings IQ of the nation and found that Australians who learn about money management at school grow up to become smarter savers in their adult life. So we know that our School Banking program pays off. To celebrate our next generation of skillful savers, we have launched a Search for Australia’s Smart School Savers. Parents or students can visit www.commbank.com.au/smartschoolsavers and any student can write in 50 words or less what they are saving for and how they plan to achieve it. The competition is open to children aged between 5 to 12 years of age. There are some great prizes up for grabs – including a national prize of $1,000 and iPads for six regional winners.
PRECIOUS PRIZES FROM THE ANCIENT CLAM OF FORTUNE: As we move towards the end of the year, we want to ensure students are keeping up their good savings habits. So we’re rewarding regular savings by sharing the Dollarmites latest find, precious prizes from the an-cient Clam of Fortune. All that students need to do for a chance to win is make a deposit of any amount through School Bank-ing between 20th October - 30th November 2014 and they automatically receive one entry into the competition. So the more you save, the more chances they have to win a prize (up to a maximum of 6 entries).
Happy banking, Nicole and Jodie
