ti-government protests or weeks, manding the immediate release o

olitical prisoners, liing o emergencyd martial law, and withdrawal otelligence orces rom Syrian cities.Residents o Zamalka on Sunday

uried our protesters killed in recentmonstrations, according to anewitness in the town. Hundredsthered or the uneral procession andanted anti-government protests as they

nrest.Tere was a heavy security presence

unday in the city o Harasta, just

ortheast o Damascus, which waseventing people rom gatheringr demonstrations according to anewitness and activist. City entrancesere blocked with security checkpoints, aking it hard to enter or exit, theewitness said. Most businesses wereosed. Te activist said he has heardports that several homes were raidedturday night by security orces. In Douma, meanwhile, several small

demonstrations were taking place withseveral hundred people each, accordingto the eyewitness. Te protests werepeaceul. Tere were no securitypersonnel inside Douma, but orces werestationed on its borders.

Te eyewitness and activist said he

was told by a doctor in the Damascussuburb o Barzah that three people werekilled in Saturdays demonstrations.

On Tursday, al-Assad lied thecountrys 48-year-old state o emergencyand abolished the state security court, both o which were key demands o thedemonstrators. But anti-governmentprotests have continued, with dozensreported killed Friday.

    Te brazen Friday killings

rippled through the Syrian politicalestablishment. Syrian parliamentmember Khalil Al Riai, announcedhis resignation Saturday in a televisioninterview, saying security orces hadopened re even though al-Assadpromised not to use orce againstprotesters.

Protests continued early Sundaymorning in a suburb outside Syriascapital, with people waving candles and

chanting, the people want to topple theregime, activist Wissam ari said.

ari, who is not in Syria but remainsin contact with activists across thecountry, said he was told Saturdaythat orces were ring in the air and atrandom targets as more than 10,000protesters took to the streets.

Witnesses in Izraa said tens othousands o people gathered or auneral procession, when, one witness

said, suddenly they opened re onus and it was raining bullets. We werechanting peaceully and they red atus.

As thousands o people marchedrom the burial grounds towardDoumas main hospital Saturday, security orces on the rooops ogovernment buildings red shots, awitness said.

    We were chanting, With our

bloods with our souls we will sacror you, martyrs. And all o suddeand without warning, they redindiscriminately into the crowd, twitness said.

ari said activists have conrmat least 84 deaths rom Fridays

    conrontations between protesterssecurity orces.

Amnesty International reportedleast 75 deaths on Friday.

Te Syrian authorities have agresponded to peaceul calls or chwith bullets and batons, said MalcSmart, Amnesty Internationals MEast and North Arica director.

Te protests began last month isouthern city o Daraa aer a violecrackdown by security orces onpeaceul demonstrators protestingarrests o youths who scribbled angovernment grati.

Te tough crackdown in Daraaspurred more protest. As peaceuldemonstrations spread to otherregions, such as Latakia, Banias, athe Damascus suburbs, the proteswere met with orce that embolden

the protesters resolve.Te government made some ef

at reorm, include the liing o thecountrys emergency law, the abolo a special court that tried regimeopponents, the establishment o a cabinet, and the granting o citizento stateless people in the countrysnortheastern Kurdish region.

But activists think the violentcrackdown Friday undermines the

liing o the emergency law. Teyalso have other complaints with thgovernment, such as immunity osecurity ocers and the incarcerato political prisoners and thosearrested or participating in peaceprotests.

Tey want the easing o the ruliBaath Partys power and a law thatwould permit the establishment o

    independent political parties.
