Tidings for January 2012

A note to you, For 2012, Southern Baptists have chosen for the theme of Hope Find It Here, “Reaching Across North America.” This will involve four simple steps: 1. An eight-week media saturation campaign during March and April, 2012 2. Participating churches hosting planning, and implementing a community reaching evangelistic event sometime in April 2012. 3. Participating churches prayer-walking and distributing invitations to the event one to two weeks before the event. 4. Afterward, participating churches doing follow-up with those who attended the event. Attractional, evangelistic events your church could host: Local Church Revival, Area Crusade, Bring a Lost Friend to Church Day, Fish and Game Supper, etc. The association evangelism committee is working on a fall associational revival for the Reaching Across North American emphasis. Please prayerfully consider being a part of “Reaching Across  North America.”  Camp season is near again. We are again looking for staff: young people who will work at the camp during the months of June and July. If you know of someone, please have them call the office and get an application. Food For Thought: There were over 92 billion dollars legally wagered in 2007 in America. Estimates total over 100 billion dollars when you add the illegal gambling. Statistics indicate that there are about 10 million compulsive gamblers. America is fast  becoming a land of gamblers. Gambling played a very prominent role in early American History. From 1790 to 1860, 24 of the 36 states sponsored government run lotteries. Many schools, universities, colleges, hundreds of churches conducted their own lotteries to raise funds for their own buildings. Through this period the voice of the Church was somewhat uncertain. There were liberal church elements that supported these lotteries and this gambling. But when Baptists, Methodists, Pur itans and Quakers began to attack this government sponsored gambling they made a difference. Between 1894 and 1964, there was no government sponsored gambling in America. Under this church attack, and because of the increasing corruption of the gambling, it had disappeared from America. Lotteries reappeared in 1964 and it was reintroduced by the state of New Hampshire, which became the first state to offer a lottery. As of 2008, 43 states have government spo nsored lotteries, and Washington D. C. makes 44 entities. Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming don’t have lotteries. People earning less than $10,000 annually buy more lottery tickets than any other income group. There are over 800 casinos across the nation, almost half on Indian reservation land. In 1974 a Gallup poll indicated 61% of Americans gambled, wagering 47.4 billion dollars annually. Many people in the U nited States are really attracted to gambling as the latest statistics show. According to the American Gaming Association, legal gambling revenues for 2007 were as follows: in 450 Commercial Casinos - $34.41  billion, in 354 Indian Casinos - $26.02 billion, in state lotteries - $24.78 billion, in Pari-mutuel Wagering - $3.50 billion, in Charitable Games and Bingo - $2.22 billion, in Card Rooms - $1.18 billion, and in Legal Bookmaking - $168.8 million, Grand Total - $92.27 billion in 2007. Between 1894 and 1964, there was no government sponsored gambling in America because the churches stood up.  We can m ake a difference as Christians, if we get involved. Food For Thought: There were over 92 billion dollars legally wagered in 2007 in America. Estimates total over 100 billion dollars

when you add the illegal gambling. Statistics indicate that there are about 10 million compulsive gamblers. America is fast becoming a land of gamblers.

Gambling played a very prominent role in early American History. From 1790 to 1860, 24 of the 36 statessponsored government run lotteries. Many schools, universities, colleges, hundreds of churches conducted their ownlotteries to raise funds for their own buildings. Through this period the voice of the Church was somewhat uncertain.
