Deck the Halls at the WSLC
by Eilene Marsh
The annual decking of the
Senior Living Center halls will
be held Thursday, December 6
from 4:00 to 8:00 pm.
Everyone is welcome to come to
help decorate the Christmas
trees and enjoy the festivities of
the evening. Bring a treat to
share.
Zion members are asked to
come to help decorate “Zion’s”
tree in the Independent Living
Room, near the south entrance.
Blue Christmas Worship Service
A Blue Christmas Worship Service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church
on Sunday, December 8 at 2:00 pm with a time for refreshments and
fellowship following. The Parish Wellness Ministry and the Zion
Visitation Ministry will assist with this worship service.
What is a Blue Christmas Worship Service? A Blue Christmas is a
worship service that may be done at any time during Advent
and is sometimes referred to as a “Longest Night” worship
service. It acknowledges that, for many people, Christmas is a
time of loneliness, sorrow, alienation, sadness, and loss. This
service offers a way for people to claim those feelings and still
feel surrounded by the compassionate love of God. The Blue Christmas
Service is open to all who are interested in attending. You may want to
invite and/or accompany a friend to this service.
Please feel free to bring a framed picture of a loved one who you would
like to remember to be placed on the altar during the service. Contact
Karen Cran, Parish Nurse at 386-1209 with questions.
The men of Zion are planning a fundraiser meal to raise funds for the thousands affected by the typhoon in the Philippines. Contact Keith Landin at 386-1286 or 242-4284 if you can help out with this project.
One of the most powerful storms ever recorded, Super Typhoon Haiyan, crashed across the central islands of the Philippines. With winds of over 200 miles per hour and torrential rains, it has caused massive destruction, loss of lives, and forced millions of people to flee their homes. Your help is needed to make a difference in affected areas. Here’s how you can help:
Pray for those affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan and for all who are working to respond.
Give to the Philippines Typhoon fund. Your monetary donations help Lutheran World Relief and Lutheran Disaster Response respond quickly to emerging needs on the ground. Give to Zion with “Philippines Disaster” in the memo and your donation will be forwarded.
Consider assembling quilts and kits to send to Lutheran World Relief so they have stock to respond to this and other emerging situations around the world.
Visit Lutheran World Relief at lwr.org/haiyan or ELCA’s Lutheran Disaster Response at blogs.elca.org/disasterresponse for more information about how these organizations are helping the victims.

Extra Worship and Fellowship Opportunities in December
“Child of Promise” is our theme
for Advent this year. Our worship
services will have a marked change
for the four weeks of Advent.
Wednesday evening worship will
use the Holden Evening Prayer
format that has been warmly
welcomed in the past. Sunday
worship will have a format that
will focus on the promises
associated with the Hebrew names
given to the Messiah, the promised
One, in Isaiah 7-12. Each service
will dig into the meaning behind
the promises of old and how those
promises of old give meaning to
our lives today as people of
promise as we await the Christ
Child. We look to each Hebrew
name translated as “Immanuel,”
“Prince of Peace,” “Branch,” and
“Salvation” during Advent as we
are led to the birth of the Christ
Child, the Promised Fulfilled. Our
time together will be surrounded
by familiar hymn tunes and
scripture.
Let us come together Wednesday
evenings at 7:15 pm preceded by
supper and study, and Sunday
mornings at 9:00 am in
anticipation!
Christmas Eve worship will be at
4:00 pm and 6:00 pm each with
Holy Communion as we seek the
One who is the Promise Fulfilled!
December 1 will have an extra
opportunity to gather as the
Women of Zion offer their Advent
Event at 6:00 pm.
December 8 will be a full day of
worship! In addition to the
morning service, we will be
offering the Blue Christmas
worship at 2:00 pm with
refreshments to follow and a
Christmas Cantata at 6:00 pm, also
with refreshments to follow!
The Sunday School Program will
bring us together at 4:00 pm on
December 15 with a potluck
supper following.
We are truly blest with all of these
offerings for worship and
fellowship. Join in the gatherings
and make a difference!
Read “The Lutheran”
Each month we receive copies of
“The Lutheran” magazine. They
are available in the Narthex and
serve as good updates about life
and mission in our churches. This
month we are introduced to the
new bishop of the ELCA. Pick up
a copy and meet the new bishop!
We have a new missionary to support!
We have a new missionary to
support! Peter Harrits, who had
been serving in Malaysia for the
past 2½ years, is moving into
another position in conjunction
with the St. Paul Synod. We
appreciated our Skype
conversation that we had as part of
our Wednesday education hour as
well as his visit at one of our
Wednesday services at the Point
this summer. We wish him well in
his new calling.
Our new missionary is
pastor Chandran Paul
Martin who serves in
South Asia based in
India. His primary
responsibility focuses on
ministries in health care, disaster
response, and the development of
self-sustainable community
ministries in South Asia. I
anticipate yet another Wednesday
night Skype conversation to get
further acquainted.

important time for our community
of faith to gather for food and
conversation. Therefore, I’m
asking for volunteers and even our
committees to step forward to fill
this gap.
The menu is up to whoever would
serve which would make for
wonderful variety. While it is not
structured to be a fund raiser, we
certainly could look to possible
concerns to support with our
freewill offerings.
Let’s step up and make this
happen! These opportunities for
fellowship need to increase not
diminish in numbers. Contact the
church office with your
willingness to serve.
Hear and study “The Story” in January
I am calling for your attention for
yet another opportunity to join in
worship and fellowship.
Beginning with the January 5
Sunday Worship and going for
five Sundays and Wednesdays, we
are going to participate in what is
entitled “The Bible 30 – Day
Experience.” Each sermon during
this five week series will focus on
themes of redemption.
There are numerous ways to read
and study the Bible. The series I
have in mind for us is not to read
the Bible in one brief period, but
to discover through the stories and
characters that we will share the
scarlet thread of God’s
redemption.
I would like the Zion community
of faith to look at common themes
along with private daily devotions
and to become a part of common
study and small group discussion
time during this five week period.
What is the format? What are the
options? The foundation is a
The financial support that we give
is $400 as a congregation along
with $200 from the Women of
Zion. Further information is on
the bulletin board at the office
entrance.
A job well done!
Thank you to the hard work of the
Nominating Committee. Their
task was challenging as committee
guidelines called for additional
members and changes in term
limits. We now have six members
working on each of seven
committees plus others serving on
committees that have different
guidelines. More than 50
members of our community of
faith are involved at this level of
leadership! Thank you Liz
Hardwick, Rhonda Kruger,
Vernon and Valerie Landin, Eilene
Marsh, Carol Thompson, and
Brenda Windahl!
End of the year...
With the end of the year coming
all too quickly, I hope you take
that opportunity to financially gift
our community of faith. We have
begun our fiscal year by moving
from over $20,000 in debt to a
positive financial position. That is
because of your strong support and
a church council that is giving us
strong leadership. By going that
extra step in our giving, our focus
moves to seeing the possibilities
for mission and growth. Your end
of the year special giving is a
blessing that will make a
difference!
Think ahead to March...
Really looking ahead, I have been
notified that the Women of Zion
will not be serving the fellowship
meals before our mid-week Lenten
services. This is an all too
(Continued from page 2) commitment to be at worship,
Sunday mornings or Wednesday
evenings, to share in the message
on one of the five themes. Then, if
you wish to go deeper, a study
guide will be available for you to
use. This guide will give you a
daily devotion, scripture readings,
and an opportunity to journal your
journey. It will serve as
preparation as well for the weekly
gathering where we will join for
60 minutes in small groups
gathered around tables in
Fellowship Hall.
The daily guidebook is not
necessary but is an added blessing.
The small group participation is
not necessary but anytime for
fellowship and sharing will make a
difference in our community of
faith.
If you wish to purchase the study
guidebook, the cost is $8.00. Sign
–up and pay on Sundays,
December 1, 8, and 15 or anytime
before the 17th in the office. Even
though you did not purchase a
guidebook, the small group
gathering events are still there for
you.
The weekly gathering of the small
groups will be Monday evenings,
5:15 – 6:15 starting January 13.
The heart of spiritual growth is in
the times of sharing. Make this a
happening! Make a difference!

Important information for every person who uses Zion’s kitchen by Pastor Bruce
The kitchen checklist was omitted
from the Women of Zion Booklet
for 2014. Since this a part of the
guidance given to us for kitchen
use because of the State of
Minnesota legislation, we need to
make it available for all who use
the kitchen. Those of you who
receive the booklet can attach the
checklist printed on the next page
to your booklet so that it is at
hand, reflecting our willingness to
be in compliance.
This checklist is a now in
everyone’s hands, continuing our
good neighbor practice and
keeping a positive spin on this
mandate. Thank you for the spirit
of cooperation that builds life
together! Δ
We received an article from Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University and
we’d like to share it with you.
Practice Makes Perfect from DaveRamsey.com
Thanksgiving means a lot more when you live it out all year long.
In some ways, Thanksgiving suffers from middle-child syndrome. Like the kid
sandwiched between older and younger siblings, Thanksgiving sometimes gets
lost in the retail shuffle between Halloween and Christmas. And even when
the calendar focuses on the fourth Thursday of November, the spirit of the
holiday can be sucked into the black hole of Black Friday.
In our hearts, we understand that Thanksgiving should be more than parades,
turkey dinners and football games. We know it’s a lifestyle that we need to
weave through every nook and cranny of who we are. It’s just hard to live with
an attitude of gratitude every day of the year.
If that’s where you are right now, don’t lose hope! Like a lot of other things in
life, learning to live out Thanksgiving every day just takes some practice. And
while you may never get it down perfectly, even a little gratitude can make a
big difference in your life—and in the lives of those around you.
With that in mind, here are three practical ways to practice the spirit of
Thanksgiving all year long.
1. Give generously. Dave always says that giving is the most fun you can
have with money, and he’s right. But there’s more to it than that. While
generous giving blesses others, it also changes you from the inside out. It
makes you less selfish and teaches you to look for needs that you can meet.
When you see things from that perspective, it’s much easier to be thankful
each day for what God has given you. Plus, you can set an example for
others and remind them that they have plenty of reasons to be thankful
beyond November.
2. Love unconditionally. Relationships are a huge part of our lives, and
gratitude frees you to invest in those relationships in powerful ways.
Practicing the spirit of Thanksgiving every day affects the way you see
others and teaches you to appreciate the people who are taking this journey
with you. Unconditional love is never easy, but it transforms relationships
and puts Thanksgiving into action throughout the year.
3. Serve selflessly. In addition to your resources and relationships, God has
also given you the gifts of time and talents. One way you can show
appreciation for those gifts is to use them to serve others. Genuine service
forces you to focus on someone other than yourself, and that’s fertile
ground for gratitude. God wants you to be a blessing to others, so make the
most of your time and talents by serving others every chance you get.
When it comes to transforming a thankless culture, we have a choice to make.
We can be part of the solution, or we can be part of the problem. Practicing
gratitude beyond November lets us be part of the solution and makes every
day Thanksgiving Day.

September and October and put
together 89 quilts. We want to
thank everyone who donated the
materials necessary to complete all
of these projects. We appreciate
all of the fabric, sheets, and thread
that so many donated to help the
quilters complete their
project. Monetary donations are
always appreciated also. For more

We recently had a Lifetouch
photography event. If you elected to
have your complimentary 8x10 sent to
Zion for pick-up (or perhaps didn’t
purchase additional photos), the
portraits are now located outside the
church office. Please stop by to
receive your portrait. If it’s not in the
current shipment, it will be coming in
a future shipment - so check back
again.
A note for people who ordered
portraits: A few people have noted
that when their portraits arrived from
Lifetouch, the photos weren’t as big
as they expected. For example, if you
ordered an 8x10 in a premier finish, it
may have arrived looking like a 5x7
photo with a black border printed on
an 8x10 board. If you thought you
ordered a full-sized portrait without a
border, please contact Lifetouch at the
toll-free number provided on the
printout you received at your
photography appointment. You’ll
need to provide your Sit Number to
them, which is printed at the top of
the printout. When you call them,
explain what you received and what
you were expecting, and request that
they reprint the photos per your
wishes with no additional charges.
If you missed out on directory
photography, it’s not too late to
submit a photo so you’ll be included
in Zion’s new church directory.
Email a copyright-free photograph to
[email protected] as soon as
possible. The cost is $10.
If you do not wish to have your photo
appear in the directory but would still
like to have a copy of the finished
directory, please contact the church
office with your name and $10. Δ
If you haven’t already
completed and returned the
contact information sheet that
was mailed to each household
in mid-October, please do so
as soon as possible! We’d
like to update our records so
that we can print accurate
membership and contact
information in the new
directory. Extra forms are
available outside the church
office. Please submit them by
December 16.

the Annual Meeting. We
appreciate the support for our
mission trip to Haiti!

The Mitten Tree is up! You are
invited to bring new mittens and
gloves to place on the Mitten
Tree. We will be donating them
to the Warroad School to
distribute to kids who need them.
There are a few changes
regarding items to be donated.
This year the school has already
received a donation of hats but
they are looking for gloves -
warm gloves for winter, gloves
with a lining. They would also
like some new or gently used
snow pants and boots. Please
place your glove donation on the
tree and any boots or snow pants
under the tree.
Thank you for supporting Fair Trade
Thank you to those who helped
with the Fair Trade Fair and to
those of you who supported it with
your purchase. The sale was a
success because of all of you. Δ

In the wake of
our part-time
administrative
assistant
Stephanie
Eggen
resigning to
relocate with
her family, we have found
ourselves in a situation where we
are very short-handed in the office
and have had to scramble to get
our immediate needs met to keep
the office operations running -
during a very busy time of the
year. A few individuals have
stepped in, altered their work and
home schedules, and shared their
time and expertise to assist with
meeting some of our needs until
permanent staff is hired. Together,
they have eased the burden of this
crisis. Perhaps you could help to
express our gratitude for their
service.
When you see Kari Sprenger,
please take the opportunity to
thank her for her good work with
the Tidings newsletter and her
work in designing the artwork for
the Advent worship series. Kari
has been doing a great job of
working with the newsletter for
more than three years. She
recently used her graphic arts
skills to create the artwork we’ll
be using for the upcoming Advent
“Child of Promise” series.
If Shelley Galle crosses your path,
be sure to thank her for the many
hours she spent working on the
slideshow at Zion’s annual
congregation meeting. She went
over and above what was expected
by providing not only an account
of the activities of the previous
year, but a beautiful production of
art and worship. She is also doing
a couple of additional projects to
help lighten the workload.
Should you pop into the church
during the week and happen to see
Jeneé Provance on one of her
many visits to work at the church
office, seize the opportunity to
acknowledge her third time of
service as an employee of Zion!
Jeneé served as Zion’s executive
secretary in the early 1990s, and
again worked as a part-time
administrative assistant to cover a
vacancy for about a year in 2009.
Now, she is squeezing additional
minutes into her day as she comes
to the church office to prepare the
orders of worship for Sundays and
Wednesdays, the Sunday worship
folder, the Partners in Prayer list,
and PowerPoint slideshows each
week. She has had to navigate a
steep learning curve as she’s
jumped into the action and filled a
huge gap. In addition, she works
with the newsletter layout from
time to time. She has gone above
and beyond what anyone would
expect to help out in the interim as
we seek to hire a permanent
employee. Please offer your
heartfelt thanks for allowing
herself to get roped back into the
fold! She may reply with her
usual response: “God is good!”
Together, these three people plus a
few volunteers who’ve provided
reception/greeting (and very
understanding fellow staff-
members and gracious
congregation members) have
helped to “glue” things together
for the time being. We’re still
short-handed - and there aren’t
enough hours in the day, but their
selfless willingness to share their
time and numerous gifts is
commendable and has made a
harried time more bearable. They
say it takes a village... but I think
it takes a faith community to build
a faith community. And we are so
very blessed! Thanks be to God. Δ
Keep a look-out for these three people... by Vicki Dalager

The Christmas Story in Song
by Jim Hallan
The cantata, Bethlehem’s Child, will be presented on Sunday, December 8 at
6:00 pm in the Zion Lutheran Church Sanctuary. The Adult Choir from Zion
will be joined by several vocalists from the community in this presentation of
the story of Christ’s birth. The choir has approximately 35 members.
The Zion Bell Choir will also perform. There are about a dozen musicians
who have had regular practices on Monday evenings and they will begin the
concert with a couple of Christmas selections. The Bells are directed by Mr.
Jeff Galle.
The cantata, written by Victor Johnson and Lloyd Larson, is a compilation of
familiar and new Christmas music woven around a narrative which will be
read by Ron Tveit. Accompanists are Lindsay Hontvet and Shelly Galle.
Featured musicians include Jenée Provance, Jeff Galle, Dr. Mike Thiele, and
Brad Knudson. The cantata is directed by Jim Hallan.
This has been a special endeavor for the choir. It has been fun joining forces
with friends from the community. The audience will find the music inspiring
and enjoyable.
There is no admission charge. There will be a luncheon following the 6:00
pm concert. The public is invited to this miraculous story of Christmas. Δ
