Did you see the headlines? Researchers now conclude that taking calcium and vitamin D-3 supplements are ineffective for preventing frac-tures. It was only recently that they were claiming just the opposite.

This research came from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. It now says there is “insuf-ficient evidence” to keep supporting calcium and vitamin D-3 supplements as a way to avoid frac-tures in pre- and post-menopausal women and in

Calcium, Vitamin D-3 Benefits in Dispute

men. The same goes for using supplements greater than 400 IU of vitamin D-3 and greater than 1,000 mg of calcium.

While the task force says the supplements don’t prevent fractures, it does think doctors should start screening for vitamin D deficiency. It also concedes that there appears to be “minimal harm” in taking calcium and vitamin D in low doses, and that they are necessary for good bone health.

The National Institutes of Health webpage for vitamin D, for example, says that it helps the body absorb calcium, carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body, and helps the immune sys-tem fight off bacteria and viruses. Calcium works hand in hand with vitamin D, and additionally helps the body manage hormones and enzymes.

Where does that leave us when it comes to de-ciding about vitamin D and calcium supplements? Right back at square one, as far as I can tell. We need to get these nutrients from our food before

we reply on supplements, and we need to consult our doctor before increasing the amount we already take. We need to get out in the sunlight. And to keep our bones strong, we need weight-bearing exercise.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have had sciatica for two and a half months. Even though I am better than at I was first, I am taking forever to fully recover. I have had chiropractic treat-ments and physiotherapy.

My doctor tells me it will go away on its own. Books that I have read say that most recover in six weeks. It’s going on three months for me.

I also had vasculitis (Henoch-Schonlein purpura). I haven’t experienced any symptoms for a couple of years. I have been feeling nauseated and have had loose BMs and the odd stomachache. A red spot appeared on my leg a few days ago. Do you think the vasculitis is playing a role in my delay in recovery? -- J.B.

ANSWER: I’ll describe the typical pain of sciatica, and you see if the description fits your pain. The sciatic nerve is the body’s largest and longest nerve. It travels from the lower back, down the leg to the ankle or foot. Pressure on the nerve from a protruding back disk, a bone spur or anything that compresses the nerve brings on sharp or burning pain running down the side and back of the leg to the foot.

Pulling the knees to the chest and holding that position for 20 seconds produces sciatica pain.

The pain of sciatica often lessens and disappears in one or two months.

The X-ray report you included doesn’t rule in or rule out sciatica. If the pain persists, an MRI or CT scan provides ad-ditional information. You are improving, so I think eventually you should be pain-free.

Vasculitis is an inflammation of blood vessels, and He-noch-Schonlein (HE-knock SURN-line) purpura is one kind of vasculitis. Children get this illness more than adults do. Red blotches that turn into bruises (purpura) pop up on the buttocks and legs. Joint pain, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea (or constipation) also arise. In the first year after recovery, relapses are common.

If your current stomach troubles worsen or you see more red blotches, get back to the doctor who took care of you before. I don’t believe that HS, if it is returning, is interfering with your recovery from sciatica.

The booklet on back problems describes their common causes and their treatment. Readers can order a copy by writ-ing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 303W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

• When putting in new plants, tear tinfoil into strips, then use toothpicks or small stakes to pin them to the ground in your new garden. It will keep the cats out, and can even discourage birds.

• To remove the fat from your pot roast or other slow-cooked meat dish, refrigerate after cooking. The fat will float to the top of the juices and coagulate. Remove this layer of fat and then reheat.

• “My kids are long past wagon size, but their wagon isn’t done hauling yet. I put it to good use in the garden. I can park it in the shed, stocked with all the things I might need. It’s very handy.” -- A.A. in Florida

• “When starting a new exercise class, be sure to give it a full month before you decide whether you like it. Especially classes that are harder, since you might be very sore and think that means you don’t care for the class.” -- L.M. in Virginia

• “Dedicate a photo album to class photos. It will be easy to see the changes your little ones have gone through over the years. It’s especially nice when you include the individual portraits for each year and make the album for just one child. It makes a special gift, too.” -- J.K. in Pennsylvania

• To sharpen a pair of worn scissors, try cutting through a piece of aluminum foil that is doubled or tripled over. Be sure to clean and dry scissors you use in the kitchen.

must sometimes calculate other credits first to properly apply the child tax credit.

Additional Child Tax Credit

If your child tax credit is limited, you might be eligible to claim the additional child tax credit. To qualify for the additional child tax credit, 1 of these must apply:

• Your earned income must be more than $3,000 for 2012. • You must have 3 or more qualifying children.

If you have at least 1 qualifying child, you can claim a credit of up to 15% of the amount your earned income is more than $3,000 . If you have 3 or more qualifying children, you can either:

• Claim a refundable credit if the net Social Security and Medicare tax you paid is more than your Earned Income Credit (EIC), if any • Use the 15% method described earlier

Ex: You’re eligible for the child tax credit of $1,000 for a qualifying child. Your earned income for the year is $7,000, and the tax liability for the year is $0. You can claim the additional child tax credit of $600:

($7,000 - $3,000) x .15 = $600

In all cases, the credit is:

• Limited to $1,000 per qualifying child • Reduced by the nonrefundable portion of the child tax credit

For the additional child tax credit, include combat pay as part of your earned income.

Use Schedule 8812 to figure the additional child tax credit.

Child Tax CreditThe child tax credit is worth up to $1,000 for each qualifying child. This credit can be both a nonrefundable and a refundable credit. The refundable portion of the child tax credit is called the additional child tax credit.

To qualify for the child tax credit, both of these must apply:

• The qualifying child must be under age 17 at the end of the year. • The qualifying child must be a: • U.S. citizen • U.S. national • U.S. resident

Divorced and Separated Parents

The parent who claims the child as a dependent is eligible to claim the child tax credit. This is true even if the parent's filing status is married filing separately.

Income Phase-Out

When your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than a certain level, the child tax credit begins to phase out. The credit is reduced $50 for every $1,000 -- or portion of $1,000 -- that your modified AGI is more than:

• $75,000 if filing as single, head of household, or qualifying widow(er) • $110,000 if married filing jointly • $55,000 if married filing separately

For the purpose of this credit, modified AGI is your AGI plus foreign earned income, if any.

Ex: You and your spouse have 1 qualifying child and an AGI of $119,000. Since your income is more than the $110,000 limit by $9,000, the amount of your child tax credit will be reduced by $50 for every $1,000 that’s more than the limit:

1. 9 x $50 = $450 (amount the credit must be reduced) 2. $1,000 (child tax credit amount) - $450 (reduction amount) = $550 3. Total amount you can claim is $550.

The $50 reduction applies fractionally by the thousand. So, $119,001 is considered $10,000 over the married filing jointly phase-out limit. Using the example above, you’d come up with:

1. 10 x $50 = $500 (amount the credit must be reduced) 2. $1,000 (child tax credit amount) - $500 (reduction amount) = $500 3. Total amount you can claim is $500.

Interaction With Other Credits

You can’t carry forward any portion of the child tax credit to future years. To maximize the benefit of each credit, you must claim the nonrefundable credits in a specific order. So you

Oughta Take Care Of That AutoBy Ralph Lee

You may not know what end of a wrench to hold, but anybody can get a grip on these helpful car care tips.

Get the soapPerhaps the simplest thing to do to take care of your car is to wash

it on a regular basis. Washing your car once a week can help keep at bay the bugs, tar and other debris that can build up over time. Given a foothold, these things can become nearly impossible to clean off. If you can’t manage a once-a-week wash, try for once a month. If you can’t manage once a month and you have kids, hire ‘em out.

Check the oil. Stat!Your car’s oil is like its blood. It needs to be checked regularly.

Check your owner’s manual for the type of oil your car uses and where the oil dipstick under the hood is located. At least once a month, check your oil level. Top it off if necessary. All you need is the oil, a funnel and some paper towels to clean up any mess.

And while you’re checking the oil...Your car has other fluids that need to be checked every so often

as well. These include automatic transmission fluid, coolant (anti-freeze), brake fluid, differential oil and power steering fluid. Consult your owner’s manual for the location of these fluid reservoirs. Check their levels periodically, top them off when necessary and have them changed when your manual indicates.

Hold the greaseYou’re keeping the outside of your car looking sharp with regular

washings, but how about under the hood? Head to your local auto parts store and check out the variety of degreasers available. Follow the directions and watch your engine sparkle. An added benefit to having a clean engine is it makes it easier to locate any trouble spots (e.g., leaks).

Windshield woesBetween washings your windshield may get dirty from rain

or snowstorms or our fine-feathered friends. A clean windshield is crucial to safe driving. Virtually any kind of glass cleaner and lint-free towel will have your windshield sparkling in no time. Don’t forget the inside of the windshield as well. Also check and clean your windows as necessary.

Lots of lightsThere’s nothing worse than looking in your rearview mirror and

seeing the flashing lights of a police car behind you. Sometimes the reason for a traffic stop is as simple as a missing headlight or taillight. Avoid this problem by doing a periodic walkaround of your car to make sure all lighting systems are functioning. Don’t forget the light illuminating your license plate. Inside the vehicle, make sure all your interior lights are working properly.

• It was Robert Kennedy who made the following sage observation: “One-fifth of the people are against everything all the time.”

• An adult ostrich can reach up to 9 feet in height and weigh upward of 300 pounds.

• The Taj Mahal, a tomb built by Indian Mogul Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most-visited tourist

attractions in the world. It wasn’t always so, though; from the time of the building’s completion in 1643 until the British occupied the Indian subcontinent, only Muslims were allowed onto the grounds. If any non-Muslim ventured into the forbidden Taj Mahal, he or she was put to death.

With temperatures heating up, you are spending more and more time outdoors. You’re working on your flowerbeds, sprucing up your garden shed and more. Oh, how you love the warm weather. It makes you want to throw open your doors and windows and bring the outdoors in. Lucky for you, you can. Here are some tips.

Bring in the natural lightReplace those heavy window coverings with lighter ones wherever possible. Use sheers instead of drapes. Pull up those blinds. Clean your doors and windows, open them on good days and remove anything obstructing the view outdoors.

Opt for lighter, earthier colors Planning to do a little repainting this spring? Choose lighter, earthier shades, like greens, blues, browns and yellows. Any color that reminds you of nature will help bring the outdoors in. If you don’t plan to repaint, you can still bring in natural colors by changing out accessories like pillows and throws.

Add natural materialsBamboo, hemp, jute, rattan, seagrass and wicker are just some of Mother Nature’s offerings you can bring into your dÅ1⁄2cor. Replace your plastic mini-blinds with rattan blinds, purchase some wicker baskets for your magazines and throw down a couple of seagrass rugs.

that artificial floral centerpiece on your mantel for a bowl of seashells. Add a tray of lemons and limes to your dining room table. Stack some rocks on your hearth.

Entice the sensesInvoke the feel of Mother Nature everywhere you can in your home. Freshen the air with some woody incense, fragrant potpourri or fresh-cut flowers. Bring the sound of water to your space with a fountain or two. Hang some nature photos or murals. Although not real, a wall-size mural of a bamboo garden or a wooded forest can make you feel like you are right there in the outdoors.

Go greenAnytime you make a new purchase, look for the most eco-friendly option available. When shopping for flooring, consider bamboo, cork and wood over man-made materials. When shopping for paint, look for brands low in VOCs, fungicides and biocides. Natural paint and milk paint are ideal. When shopping for linens, look for earth-friendly ones.

Of course, one of the best and easiest ways to bring the outdoors is through houseplants. Accept all seedlings and shoots, visit your local nursery for other options and place all of your houseplants where they can be seen. It doesn’t take much to bring the outdoors into your space. Start sprucing it up now, and when the sun goes down and you’re forced to come inside, you might not mind it so much.
