This season’s flu just isn’t going away. It’s getting worse. And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, those requiring the most hospitaliza-tions from the flu are seniors age 65 and older. The most common underlying medical conditions include cardiovascular disease, obesity, lung disease and meta-bolic disorders.

Right on the heels of this bad news, however, a national network of caregivers has published a list of suggestions for avoiding the flu. If anyone knows about the flu, it’s the Visiting Angels (www.visitingangels.com)! They’ve created a “Fight the Flu Kit,” and their list makes sense:

-- Paper towels: Use these in the bathroom or at the

Don’t Catch the Flu!

kitchen sink instead of hand towels, which can harbor germs.

-- A forehead thermometer: No need to put anything in your mouth. Ask your pharmacist for brand recom-mendations.

--Hand sanitizers with aloe: sanitize hands without drying skin

--Pens: Carry your own in public when you have to sign something. Don’t touch something used by hundreds of others.

--Lysol spray: Use at home on doorknobs, handles and light switches (spray on a paper towel first). Visiting

Angels recommends doing this once a week. I vote for once a day. The virus can live up to 48 hours on plastic and stainless steel.

--Hand soap: not necessarily antibacterial.Hand sanitizer wipes: Use on everything you touch

out in public, like shopping-cart handles and seats, door knobs, sinks, telephones and library books. If you can’t sanitize it, wash your hands as soon as you can. (I hate to say it, but this might be the time to avoid libraries.)

With a little luck and a lot of common sense, we can get through this season without getting the flu!

Q: Enclosed is a picture of an old table that has bins and a pullout cutting board. Can you tell me its age? -- Catherine, Venice Center, N.Y.

A: You have the bottom half of a Hoosier Cabinet, a style of cupboard that was common in many kitchens during the early years of the past century. The value of this piece is less since it is not com-plete.

• • •Q: I have several pieces of glass and would like to sell them. Can you help me with this? -- Chris-

tina, Webster, Mass.A: I examined the list of items you included in your letter, and I think you should hire a good certified

appraiser to determine current values. There are two types of appraisals, verbal and written. Written appraisals are generally more expensive and often necessary for insurance purposes. To find an appraiser in your area, contact The American Society of Appraisers, P.O. Box 17265, Washington, DC 20071; or The International Society of Appraisers, 1131 SW 7th Street, Suite 105, Renton, WA 98005.

You might be tempted to rely on a neighbor or collector. Before you do, let me share a cautionary tale. Several months ago, one of my readers had three older rugs she wished to sell. She relied on a neighbor, who claimed to be an expert. The so-called expert valued the rugs at $150 each. She sold them for that amount and later found an insurance appraisal done by her husband in 1955. She was stunned to discover the appraisal documented that her rugs were from the late 19th century and worth about $7,000 each.

• On Feb. 21, 1828, the first printing press designed to use the newly invented Cherokee alphabet arrives at New Echota, Ga. A young Cherokee, Sequoyah, had invented the written language, consisting of 86 characters.

Within months, the first Indian language newspaper in history was printed. It was called the Cherokee Phoenix.

• On Feb. 24, 1836, in San Antonio, Texas, Colonel William Travis issues a call for help on behalf of Texan troops defending the Alamo, an old Spanish mission and fortress under attack by the Mexican army. Only 32 men from the nearby town of Gonzales responded to Travis' call for help.

• On Feb. 23, 1885, a 19-year-old man named John Lee is sent to the gallows in Exeter, England, for the murder of a rich older woman. After the noose was put around his

neck the lever malfunctioned three times. The authorities, mystified at the gallows' inexplicable malfunction, decided to ascribe it to an act of God. Lee was sent to prison instead.

• On Feb. 18, 1930, Pluto is discovered at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Ariz., by astronomer Clyde W. Tombaugh. In 2006, however, the International Astronomical Union announced that Pluto would no longer be considered a planet due its relatively small mass, just one-sixth that of Earth's moon.

• On Feb. 22, 1959, Lee Petty defeats Johnny Beauchamp at the just-opened Daytona International Speedway in Florida to win the first-ever Daytona 500. The race was so close that Beauchamp was initially named the winner. Three days later, with the assistance of news photographs, Petty was officially named the champ.

• “Here’s a fun afternoon of play just waiting to happen: Check with your local grocery store or big-box store to see if it has uncrushed cardboard boxes. Get several to create a cardboard city in your living room or child’s bedroom. They can be decorated to look like anything, or cut, trimmed and taped into most any shape. Kids even like to stock them with pillows and blankets for a cozy sleepover. When you’re done, break them down and recycle until the next adventure.” -- J.J. in Florida

• Like to use paper towels to dry your clean hands? Set them aside to dry instead of just throwing them out, then you can use them with glass cleaner or other solutions.

• Use a shower curtain cut or folded in half under baby’s high chair to make floor clean-up easier.

• “Air-popped popcorn is healthier for you. If you have an air popper, you’ll also have a jar of popcorn kernels. Keep them in the refrigerator or even the freezer. You can use them straight from the fridge, and the bonus is that you’ll have fewer unpopped kernels and bigger, fluffier popcorn.” -- E.M. in Wisconsin

Prevent Tire Decay By Ralph Lee

Rotating your car’s tires is like going to the dentist. Nobody likes it, but it’s something that should be done. Depending on where and when it happens, getting a flat tire is similar to teeth issues. If a tire goes flat in your driveway, it’s like a small cavity that has to be filled. It’s annoying but not that big a deal. If a tire blows in rush-hour traffic, you’re talking full-blown root canal, and who wants that? Here are some tips to prevent tire decay. Most newer model cars are front-wheel drive, and tire rotation becomes important because the front tires wear faster than the rear. The reason for this is simple: When you make any kind of full turn in traffic or follow the curve of the road, more of the vehicle’s weight is

placed on the edges of the tires. This especially affects the front tires because these are ones that are actually turning while the rear tires stay in a straight line. This turning causes the edges of the tires to wear over time. If your tires wear unevenly, you’re suspectible to spotty braking and poor handling-real toothaches, er, headaches. Another important aspect to tire rotation is the eventual replacement of your tires. If you don’t rotate your tires, you’ll replace them two at a time, and that means always having uneven wear on your wheels. If you replace your tires four at a time-and keep them rotated regularly-you’ll have even wear on all four. How often should you rotate your tires? Well, that obviously varies based on the amount of miles you drive each day. Unfortunately, for some drivers, you may need to rotate your tires more often than you visit the dentist for a checkup. A rotation is often recommended at about 7,500 miles. That’s often the time for an oil change, so do some multi-tasking

and get both jobs done at once. Check your owner’s manual to see when it recommends tire rotations for your particular model. How to have your tires rotated has been subject to debate similar to the discourse over the merits of fluoride. Again, check your owner’s manual to see if there’s a specific method recommended for your model of vehicle. If there isn’t, there are two basic ways for front-wheel drive tire rotation, and both are as simple as flossing. One method is to move the front driver’s side tire to the back driver’s side and the back driver’s side to the front passenger’s side. The front passenger’s side then moves to the back passenger’s side and the back passenger’s side to the front driver’s side. Another method is to swap the front driver’s side and the rear passenger’s side tires with each other, and then swap the front passenger’s side tire with the rear driver’s side. Either method seems to help the tires achieve more even tread wear, and that’s what you’re after.

• It was noted American poet Ogden Nash, best known as a composer of droll verse, who made the following sage observation: "Some tortures are physical / And some are mental, / But the one that is both / Is dental."

• According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, if you're like the average American, you consume 132 pounds of sugar every year. Compare that to folks in the year 1700, who consumed only about 4 pounds of sugar per year.

• If you cook a single ostrich egg, you can feed 24 people.

• When you studied history in school, you probably didn't learn about Edward Hyde. He was a cousin to Queen Anne and was appointed to the post of

by Samantha Weaver

colonial governor of New York, in which position he served from 1702 to 1708. Though he's not well known now, he was quite the talk of the colonies in his day. It seems that when a delegation of colonists went to his mansion to welcome the new governor, they found him sitting on the front porch, crocheting a doily and wearing one of his wife's dresses. At his first formal ball as governor, he wore a gown. His eccentricities continued until he was caught embezzling public money and was returned to England.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you ex-plain to me why a doctor would refuse to give a patient a shot of vitamin B-12? My

former doctor, now deceased, gave me a monthly B-12 shot, and it

kept me peppy. My new doc-tor says I don’t need the

shots. Would they hurt me? --

B.A.

ANSWER: The shots won’t hurt you. However, you need them only if you have a proven B-12 deficiency. At one time it was a widespread but not endorsed practice to give people shots of vitamin B-12 to ener-gize them. It’s a practice that never should have been started.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My mother made

all her children chew their food at least 25 times. She claimed that it helped food digest. I gave this up when I left home at 18. Is there any evidence that chewing that number of times aids digestion? -- H.H.

ANSWER: The object of chewing is to reduce the size of food so it can be

swallowed easily and to mix saliva with the food

for the

Vitamin B-12 Shots same reason. Saliva starts the digestive process.

I have never heard that a prescribed number of chews is necessary to accom-plish these goals.

• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer indi-

vidual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
