• Lime juice and vinegar both make good meat tenderizers. You can purchase tougher cuts of meat, season with spices and lime/vinegar, and marinate for 10 to 15 minutes before cooking. It is a great way to ease your meat budget. Steaks are getting expensive!

Two years ago, Jamie McMurray won the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 in the same year. Last year, everything fell apart.

After three victories -- he also won the Charlotte Motor Speed-way fall race -- McMurray plummeted to 27th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings last season, finishing in the top five

only twice and winning the pole at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.Needless to say, changes were in order during the offseason. Team owner Chip Ganassi

overhauled the entire team in the wake of disappointing seasons by both McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya. "Well, Chip has made a really big commitment," McMurray said. "I mean, they changed a lot of management. There's been a tremendous amount of changes to the '42' car (Mon-toya). There have been quite a few changes to the '1' car (his). We hired a lot of new people from

different organi-zations.

"You know, the frustrating part is that we won races with the guys who were here before, won some really big races," he said. "But I think the mo-rale in the shop got way down, and everyone ... you know, you start criticizing everybody, and

Chip needed to make a change to get everybody pumped back up."

Based on preseason test-ing, the speeds at Daytona Interna-tional Speedway figure to be way up. It appears that speeds of more than 200 mph will be commonplace in the Budweiser Shootout on Feb. 18 and the Daytona 500 on Feb. 26.

"For me it doesn't really feel any different," said McMurray, who is from Joplin, Mo. "You can't tell a big difference from 190 to 205. You do at a place like Texas or Atlanta, but here (Daytona) not so much because you have so much grip, the cars drive so well, and you don't feel the big speed difference.

"I don't know why NASCAR is OK with going a little faster now. My guess would be that they have become educated on how fast the cars can go and, if they get out of control, how stable they will be. I always thought 200 mph was the 'don't go past' zone, but they seem to be comfortable with that, and the car doesn't feel a lot different."

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: We adopted a kitten, "Charly," a little more than a year ago, and she tested positive for feline leukemia. Our vet pre-scribed a medicine and she has been fine. She is an indoor cat. Now a new kitten has found its way into our yard, and we have fed it. She will not come to us, but she and our cat play through the window. We were told our cat should not be around any other cats, as she could give them the disease. If the new kitten comes to us and receives the shot that protects against feline leukemia, would it be possible for the two cats to cohabitate? -- Amy V., via email

DEAR AMY: There is a possibility that both cats can eventually live together; however, if or when the stray kitten trusts you enough to come to you, you will need to keep her isolated from Charly for a little while longer.

First, the new kitten will need to undergo tests by the veterinarian for both feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), as well as for other illnesses and parasites like worms

and fleas. She'll need to be spayed and receive her required vaccinations. Second, kittens are at higher risk to contract FeLV, so she'll need to be housed separately from Charly until she reaches six months to a year in age. Both should receive twice yearly checkups and their immunizations kept up to date.

Charly and the new cat may not mesh indoors as well as they do at the window. If they fight at all, they'll need to be kept separated, so introduce them to each other very carefully. Also, the new cat mighht never adjust to the indoors. Be prepared for that, and at least get her spayed and vaccinated to protect her and the neighboring cat population.

Is Sick Cat Doomed to Live Alone?


• On Feb. 27, 1860, Abraham Lincoln poses for the first of several portraits by noted Civil War-era photographer Mathew Brady. A relatively new art form, the photograph (or

daguerreotype) showed a beardless Lincoln just moments before the future president’s historic speech at Cooper Union in New York City.

• On March 3, 1887, Anne Sullivan begins teaching 6-year-old Helen Keller, who lost her sight and hearing after a severe illness at age 19 months. Under Sullivan’s tutelage, Keller flourished, eventually graduating from college and becoming an international lecturer and activist.

• On March 2, 1904, Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, the author and illustrator of children’s books, is born in Springfield, Mass. Geisel’s first book, “And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street” (1937), was rejected by dozens of publishers.

• On March 1, 1932, Charles Lindbergh III, the 20-month-old son of aviation hero Charles Lindbergh, is kidnapped from the family’s new mansion in Hopewell, N.J. Days later, the baby’s body was discovered near the Lindbergh home.

• On Feb. 28, 1940, Mario Andretti, whose name will become synonymous with American auto racing, is born in Montona, Italy. He officially retired from racing in 1994 as the only driver to ever win the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500 and a Formula One championship.

• On March 4, 1966, a John Lennon quotation that was ignored in England set off a media frenzy in America: “We’re more popular than Jesus now.” Bible Belt disc jockeys declared Lennon’s remarks blasphemous and vowed an eternal ban on all Beatles music.

• On Feb. 29, 1980, the iconic glasses worn by rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Buddy Holly, lost since his death in a plane crash in 1959, are found in Mason City, Iowa. The plane wreckage was strewn across snow-covered cornfields, and the glasses weren’t found until the snow melted in the spring. They were given to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s office, where they sat filed away for the next 21 years in a sealed envelope.

When you talk to anyone about sick children, invariably the first question you hear is “Do they have a fever?” And maybe you remember your mother looking at you worriedly saying, “You have a fever, we better call the doctor.” But fever hasn’t always been such a cause for alarm. In the past fever was even considered beneficial because it was thought to burn out the bad “humors” that were making you feel sick. It is only recently, really since the advent of aspirin a little over a hundred years ago that we have become so aggressive about treating fevers, and that fever , no matter how slight has become a reason to worry, or even panic. Should we be worried? First let’s talk about what a fever is.

Even with all the wonders of modern science, the value of fever is still not completely understood. Remember we don’t have a cure for the common cold yet either! Oddly enough though, our relatives from long ago may have had a better understanding of the benefits of fever than we gave them credit for. We don’t talk about people having “humors” any more (and your doctor probably doesn’t have a jar of leeches in his or her cupboard!), but we do understand that fever is a part of the body’s natural and helpful response to infection. Just like our military the immune system of our body has many types of “soldiers”, called immune cells, as well as multiple weapons at it’s disposal. When our body is infected by viruses, bacteria or other types of germs, fever is one of the many weapons our immune system can call upon to turn the battle in our favor. We now know that the increase in temperature that fever brings increases the ability of our immune cells to kill the invaders. We also know that higher temperatures make it hard for viruses and bacteria to multiply. You could say that viruses and bacteria can’t thrive at higher temperatures. Finally, we have learned that viruses, bacteria and other kinds of invaders need iron as building blocks to make more invaders, and when we have a fever, our body hides away this precious mineral so that invading cells can’t take it and use it for themselves. Fever helps the immune system in many ways to fight off infections successfully.

How does it work? Body temperature is controlled by a special part of the brain called the hypothalamus. This controller, the hypothalamus, decides a temperature it wants to keep your body at, usually somewhere roughly around 98.6 degrees farenheight. If your body gets warmer, say from exercise or sitting in the sun, your brain will signal your body to sweat and will signal you to take your coat off. If your body’s temperature falls below the specified temperature, it will tell your body to shiver which activates the muscles and produces heat, and your brain will also tell you that you are “cold” and you will take appropriate action like putting your jacket back on again. This process goes on day in and day out often without our really noticing it.

However, when your immune cells are working hard to fight off an infection, whether bacteria, virus or other kind of invader, they send a message to the hypothalamus to break out the big weapon -fever, and the hypothalamus will reset the body’s temperature. If the hypothalamus sets your body’s temperature to 103 degrees now, but you are only 98.6 degrees, which was normal before but now is too cold, your body will start to shiver to make heat and you will want to put a coat on or get under the covers to get warmer. This is why we have “the chills”. Once your body reaches the new temperature it will stay there until it gets a signal that your body has successfully fought off the infection, this will be your body’s new “normal” temperature. Can you remember someone that didn’t seem to notice that they had a fever but you touched their forehead and they were really hot? Their hypothalamus had told them this new temperature was normal. When the battle is over, the hypothalamus turns the temperature back down and guess what, now 103 degrees is too hot, your brain signals you to cool off and you throw off your blankets and the body starts sweating. You may feel very flushed as well, and this is what people are talking about when they say your fever “is breaking”. Long ago this was seen as a good sign, as the body had successfully fought off the infection and was now cooling itself to its normal temperature when not sick.

Though we still don’t understand everything that fever does for us, we do know that fever helps our body fight off infections, including bacterial infections and viral infections, and we know that fever itself is not a disease but rather a symptom manifesting when the body’s immune system is actively fighting off invaders. know that fever can be both helpful and good, rather than a reason for worry or panic. However, intelligent readers are probably already asking the questions “Well then, should I treat my child’s fever? ” What about

seizures? Don’t fevers cause seizure?” and “Aren’t there times when fever is dangerous?” These are excellent questions that we can look forward to discussing in the future. For now, remind yourself that fever is the body and it’s immune system trying to do their job to keep you healthy.
