DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our beloved mutt “Pistol”was put to sleep a year ago after battling cancer. Twomonths ago, my son and I adopted a new dog, “Skyler,”who is mostly Swiss mountain dog and we’re not surewhat else. Skyler is about 3 years old, and I’m not sureif he’s adapting well to his new home, He barks furiouslyat the slightest noise and barks constantly at any visitors.Pistol was never like this, and he also was an adultadoption. How can we get Skyler to settle down? — Janetin Kansas City, Mo.
DEAR JANET: Well, first, remind yourself thatSkyler and Pistol are two different dogs, and that — asadult adoptees — you don’t know what either of theirupbringings were like. As a different dog, Skyler willhave a different personality as well, and that alsodetermines how he reacts to new noises and people.
It’s important not to compare your new dog to the olddog. But we often do that with pets — it’s part of thegrieving process when we lose a beloved companion.
So, be patient with Skyler. He needs time to becomeaccustomed to his new environment, and he needs to beslowly socialized rather than introduced to all yourfriends at once, which can be quite overwhelming for apet. He needs regular obedience training and steady, predictable interaction with the household so he willbecome comfortable with the rhythms and rules of hisnew life.
And, be patient with yourself. Pistol will always be apart of your life, and you will miss him. Skyler isn’t areplacement for Pistol; he’s a new addition. Give yourselftime to get past Pistol’s loss and to accept Skyler for thedog that he is.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have heard a lot aboutMRSA. Can you give me some more informationabout it? What can we do to prevent getting it?I am a student at San Jacinto High School inCalifornia. — J.R.
ANSWER: “MRSA” is short for “methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus,” a commonbacterium found all over the place and acommon inhabitant of the skin. “MRSA” ispronounced “mersa,” as though it were a word.
In the early days of penicillin, it could kill manygerms, including the staph germ. That germ is awily creature. It soon learned how to dodge thekilling power of penicillin. Clever scientists came
up with a new model ofpenicill in calledmethicillin. It was effectiveagainst those resistantstaph germs. This happysituation came to an endwhen staph learned howto evade methicill in.These are the MRSAbacteria.
We do have antibiotics that can deal withMRSA bacteria. However, the lesson is thatantibiotics must be restricted only to infectionsby bacteria that respond to them. Usingantibiotics indiscriminately paves the way for thedevelopment of resistance.
MRSA can cause all kinds of infections, but themost common are skin and soft-tissue infections.Soft tissues are the tissues just below the skin, thesubcutaneous tissues. Outbreaks of MRSAinfections are common in high-school footballplayers and wrestlers because of the skin-to-skincontact that occurs in those sports. Anyone, athlete or not, can come down with this infection.
Frequent hand-washing is the best defenseagainst MRSA. All skin wounds should be coveredwith a bandage of sterile, dry gauze andinspected daily to see if they are becominginfected. Athletes should launder their playingclothes after each use and should not store dirty
clothes in a locker. They should showerimmediately after a practice. No one shouldshare towels, brushes or combs.
• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My mother’s neighbor
“candles” her ears when they fill with wax. I amnot acquainted with this procedure. My motherbelieves it is an excellent treatment, and shewon’t discuss it with me. What is your opinion?— H.M.
ANSWER: My opinion on candling gets me introuble with aficionados of the practice. Itinvolves inserting the narrow end of a cone-shaped device into the ear canal. The otherend is lit. Heat is supposed to soften the waxand create a vacuum that draws it out of theear.
I think it is dangerous. The FDA doesn’tapprove of it.
• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer
individual letters, but he will incorporate them in hiscolumn whenever possible. Readers may write himor request an order form of available healthnewsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

The great hibernation is coming to an end.Oh, I’ve kept myself occupied during the NASCAR
offseason. I’ve written numerous columns about othersports. I’ve gone to a few ballgames as a fan. I’ve readquite a bit.
I’ve written a few songs and recorded all the ones I’vewritten — 19 now, I think, along with several others in vari-ous stages of completion — in a studio, and now friends ofmine are adding other tracks (lead guitar, bass, percussion)in order to make it look like I know what I’m doing.
I’ve tried to become a better guitarist and get a little bet-ter on a few other instruments (electric guitar, harmonica, mandolin) lying around the house.
I’ve organized my home music collection. My house isn’texactly conceived by an interior decorator. All those CDsare in a gigantic chest of drawers — a friend changed jobsand didn’t want to take it with him — between the kitchenand the kitchen table, on the other side of the bar, which isnot a bar where beverages are prepared, but a bar wherefood is prepared, where cheese is sliced and instant pud-ding and Jell-O (sugar-free, of course!) are whisked.
Music and Jell-O. In close proximity. Why? There wasroom for a dresser there ... and room in the dresser for CDs.
I’ve cooked a lot. I’ve conducted experiments in the rap-idly growing field of chicken-wing sauces. I’ve further per-

fected the chili recipe. I’ve explored new innovations inregard to the microwave, the electric grill and the crockpot.
I’ve written a few chapters of fiction, not because ofsome book deal but because I really want to. I’d like to geta novel published, but have no clear confidence that I’mcapable of it. I’ll never be capable of it unless I try. If I’mnot good enough now, maybe I can get good enough withpractice. The downside isthat fiction is often pushedback in the name of projectsthat actually produce money.
The best way to becomea better writer is ... to write.Fortunately, I get a lot ofpractice.
If I lack direction, though,I’ll get it soon. NASCARlasts for 10 months. Whenwriting about it is your pri-mary job, there isn’t muchtime for anything else.
I never had a hobby untilfairly recently because myjob was so all-inclusive.Now music is a genuinehobby, and it’s made my lifemore enjoyable.
Writing about NASCARis a cool job, as my friendsare fond of telling me. I’mlooking forward to it right
now. I feel revitalized. There have been years when I dreadedthe season’s onset.
Maybe, by stepping away a bit and diversifying myself,I’ve found a happy medium. Maybe obsessing less aboutNASCAR will make me better at writing about it.
Or maybe it won’t. I’m happier, though.© 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: I have an antique lapel pin made in about1900 that promoted Carrie Nation and her anti-saloon campaign. It is a small copper hatchetwith a design featuring a small pearl andwhite stone. Do you think it has any value?— Dorothy, Sun City, Ariz.
A: I could not find your pin in one of myfavorite reference books, Warman’s PoliticalCollectibles: Identification and Price Guide,by Dr. Enoch L. Nappen (Krause, $24.99),but I did track down two seasoned collectors.I described your pin, and they both think it isworth about $75.

Q: I have a J. Estey and Company pump organmade in Brattleboro, Vt. The patent dates are allfrom the 1860s. Where can I get more informationabout its value? — F.M., Montevideo, Minn.
A: Although Minneapolis is across the state fromwhere you live, you need to consult an establishedpiano/organ dealer in that city. He or shewill be familiar with values in your regionand can help you determine the age andvalue of your instrument. Don’t pay too
much attention to patent dates, since they can’t beused to accurately date an item. For example, I havea kitchen gadget that was patented in 1895 butpurchased new by my grandmother in 1928.

• It was noted American journalist,
essayist, satirist and critic of culture
H.L. Mencken who made the
following sage observation: “Strike
an average between what a
woman thinks of her husband a
month before she marries him and
what she thinks of him a year
afterward, and you will have the
truth about him.”
• It may seem odd, but the Drug Enforcement Agency supports, in a fashion, apublication that advocates the legalization of cannabis; the DEA has threesubscriptions to the magazine High Times.
• There was a time when cartoon character Fred Flintstone appeared in adsfor Winston cigarettes.
• In an anthropological study once conducted in Papua New Guinea, it wasfound that one in three adult deaths were the result of homicide. And it seemsthat those murdered were often targeted because they were suspected ofpracticing sorcery.
• There seems to be quite a rivalry between the towns of Rosehill, N.C., andWilmington, Del. Both locales claim to be the home of the world’s largest fryingpan, with a diameter of 10 feet. This begs some questions, of course: How many
eggs are being fried atonce to require such alarge piece of cookware? And what sort of stove isrequired to heat such amammoth pan?
• In today’s troubledeconomic times, youmight not be surprised tolearn that in his famed“Devil’s Dictionary,”Ambrose Bierce defineda corporation as “aningenious device forobtaining individual profitwithout individualresponsibility.”
• According to estimatesmade by United Nationsr e s e a r c h e r s ,approximately 25languages becameextinct in 2008, meaningthe last native speakerhad passed away.
