Perfume SetQ: I have a perfume set from the late 1940s

manufactured by Bourjois under the name Evening inParis. The set is unopened and still in its satin-linedbox. How much do you think it’s worth? — Alice, via e-mail

A: I spoke to several perfume-bottle collectors. Thefact that your set is still in its original box adds to thevalue. Evening in Paris products were inexpensive andare fairly common. Most of the sets were marketed indime and drug stores throughout the 1940s and ’50s. Ichecked eBay to see if sets were available online, andthey were. I spotted an Evening in Paris set by Bourjoisthat eventually sold for $26. Dozens of the individualbottles and powder boxes were selling in the $2 to $10range.

• • •Q: I have a collection of old newspaper cartoon strips

collected between 1929 and 1950, all original panels

by the artists. Some of the pieces in this collection areinscribed to my dad, John Heck. Due to a water leakabout 30 years ago, many of the panels were damaged. If I have them restored, would this lessen their value?— Jim, Carson City, Nev.

A: I have two sources that might be helpful. TheNational Cartoonist Society is my first pick. Thecontact information is 341 North Maitland Ave., Suite130, Maitland, FL 32741; www.reuben.org; [email protected]. Check out the club’s Web site beforeyou contact it. The Cartoon Research Library at OhioState University has been involved in restoration for anumber of years, and you might also seek help there(http://cartoons.osu.edu/).

• • •Q: I have a necklace that was given away at the

New York World’s Fair of 1939. On the back isinscribed “Good Luck from the Kendall OilCompany.” Does it have any value? — Irene, NorthChili, N.Y.

A: Millions of premiums were given away duringthe 1939 World’s Fair, and almost without exception, all are collectible. William “Bill” Pieber is a dealerwho specializes in memorabilia from most major fairsand expositions, and he can help you. Write to him c/o Best of Times Antiques, 1010 Mallow Drive,Ballwin, MO 63011.

When the Daytona 500 rolls around, ReedSorenson will be only 24 years old. Unless some-thing changes, he won’t have a car to drive inthe 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup opener.

Sorenson is be-ing replaced in Ri-

chard Petty Motorsports’ No. 43. Teammate A.J.Allmendinger is moving into the car from No. 44, whichapparently will be no more. Provided all the intended agree-ments are finalized, the team is merging with Yates Rac-ing, changing from Dodge to Ford and fielding Fusionsfor drivers Kasey Kahne, Elliott Sadler, Allmendinger andPaul Menard, who competed last year at Yates.

“I want to thank the Richard Petty Motorsports organi-zation for giving me the chance to race the No. 43 Dodgethis year,” said Sorenson. “I did the best I could and triedto represent the number and company in a way that wouldmake Mr. Petty and our sponsors proud.

“I learned a lot this year. The opportunity to work withpeople like Richard Petty and Dale Inman is somethingI’ll never forget.”

Sorenson, of Peachtree City, Ga., is a victim of circum-stances, but his inability to put together a solid season con-tributed to his problems. In his fourth full season, Sorensonfinished 29th in the point standings, with only one top-10finish. He was 24th, 22nd and 32nd in his first three sea-sons, all with the team then known as Chip Ganassi Rac-ing with Felix Sabates, a team now aligned with what oncewas Dale Earnhardt Inc.

After a promising beginning, Sorenson has been unableto make the adjustment to competing at stock car racing’shighest level. He won an ARCA race in 2004 and is a three-time winner in the Nationwide Series.

The combination of NASCAR’s ban on testing and anew team was more than Sorenson could overcome.

Early last season, Sorensen said, “I think we’re makingprogress and getting our cars better in practice. It’s justtough to do without testing and being with a new team. Ithink we’re getting the chemistry a little bit better, and Ithink that should get better as the year goes on.”

Sorenson Looking for a Cup RideThe improvement never took hold, and by season’s end, Sorenson found him-

self outside the sport looking in. He’s still young, though, and is likely to resurfaceat some point, perhaps in the Nationwide Series. He has never competed previ-ously in the Camping World Truck Series.

NOW HERE’S A TIPBy JoAnn Derson

• To keep moisture in a cake that has been cut, secure a slice of bread to the cut sides withtoothpicks. This will eliminate the need to sliceoff a bit of the cake to get rid of the dried-outportion. It works well for most types of cakes.

There’s something magical about a snow globe. Who canresist shaking a liquid-filled decoration to watch it “snow”?I know families who collect them on their summer vaca-tions, and on occasion they give them a good shake, turnthem upright and then smile with the memories. Now youcan make your own to commemorate something special youdid in 2009.

Reminisce with your kids about activities your family en-joyed this past year, and then make a memory snow globeusing a small waterproof object to represent the activity orevent. Here’s how:

First, you want to have a vision for your scene and how itwill be contained. Will you need a little jar, fat jar or skinnyjar? A tall jam jar might accommodate that plastic bear fig-ure as a reminder of a camping trip at a national park. Ababy-food jar would make a perfect home for a little rubberstarfish to represent the sea life you observed at an aquarium. It’s all up to you and your imagination.

Step 1: Fill the jar with water and shake to test the lid fortightness. Pour the water out, remove the paper label and letit dry completely.

Step 2: Choose a clean, waterproof toy, game piece, travelsouvenir or trinket to inhabit the imaginary world. Place ittemporarily inside the lid and lower the jar down over it, justto make sure it fits and allows enough space for the “snow”to fall when complete. An adult should glue the object on theinside of the lid with water-resistant glue, such as aquariumsealant from your local pet store. Let dry 24 hours.

Step 3: Fill the jar almost to the top with baby oil, or usedistilled water with a few drops of glycerin added. Sprinkleglitter or waterproof confetti into the liquid. An adult shouldapply water-resistant glue to the outside grooves of the jarrim and carefully screw on the lid. Stand the jar with lid endup to dry for 24 hours.

Gather your kids around and shake your 2009 memoryglobe. Then hold still and watch.

“The grandkids are coming!” tip: Enjoy a “crafting fest”with your grandchildren and let each one make a memoryglobe with objects that represent something you did together, such as a fishing trip, a book you read, a movie you saw or arecipe you cooked up. Talk about the memory as you create.

Resolutions for You and Your PetBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As part of my usualnew year’s resolution to lose weight, I also madea resolution this year for my dog “Jerry” to loseweight as well. We’re both on a diet, and we walktogether. Is it unusual for an owner to make a reso-lution for his dog? — Carl in Brooklyn, N.Y.

DEAR CARL: I don’t have any statistics on it,but I have a hunch that lots of owners include theirpets in their new year’s resolutions. And it’s notan unwelcome idea, either — including positivechanges for your pet as well as yourself can onlybe good. I applaud your including Jerry in yourweight-loss plans, particularly in taking him withyou for walks.

This year, we should all resolve to spend moretime with our pets. The American Kennel Club isencouraging dog owners to try new ways of train-ing, such as training toward a goal like the AKCCanine Good Citizens Test (akc.org/events/cgc),or training for a competitive event.

Cats, which seem to do well all by themselves, actually benefit from extra companionship and, especially if they’re exclusively indoor cats, of-ten need to be prompted toward more activity. Fre-quent, active play times, where the cat chases atoy or plays with an object dangled in front of it,should take place daily. In fact, all pets benefitfrom frequent interaction with their owners, re-gardless of whether they’re cuddly or not (fish,I’m thinking of you).

So this year, resolve to not just spend more timewith your pet, but to make an active difference inyour pet’s life. It will benefit both of you.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 42-year-old malewho has had high blood pressure for the past two years.I have been on many medicines, but my pressure doesn’tgo much lower. I don’t smoke or drink. No one else inmy family has high blood pressure. I am about 25pounds overweight. My doctor mentioned that I mighthave secondary high blood pressure. What is that? —R.B.

ANSWER: Ordinary high blood pressure, orhypertension, is essential hypertension — high bloodpressure that comes on its own. Secondary high bloodpressure is an elevation of pressure due to anotherprocess.

A leading cause of secondary high blood pressureis a narrowed kidney artery. Because of the narrowing, the kidney thinks body’s blood pressure is too low. Itbegins to turn out large quantities of renin, a kidney-made chemical that raises blood pressure. This kind ofhigh blood pressure is known as renovascularhypertension. It can be cured by relieving the blockagein the kidney artery.

Adrenal gland tumors, Cushing’s disease and a veryunusual tumor called a pheochromocytoma are othercauses of secondary high blood pressure.

The bright side of secondary high blood pressure isits curability when the “secondary” process is treated.

Your young age and the fact that your pressuredoesn’t respond to the drugs well are two factors thatsuggest a secondary process might be going on

Even though you didn’t ask, you can help yourselfby losing the extra 25 pounds of weight you carry. Dietand exercise do work. You also can do yourself goodby reducing greatly the amount of salt in your diet.

Proof of secondary high blood pressure involves

some complicated tests, so don’t be surprised if yourdoctor arranges them for you.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have jogged for many

years. It’s kept my weight down, and I do feel reallyfit. Twice I have sprained an ankle by stepping in apothole I couldn’t see. What’s the right way to treat asprained ankle? — G.R.

ANSWER: I can’t improve on the time-honoredRICE recipe.

“R” is for rest. Don’t put weight on a joint whosepain increases by so doing.

“I” is for ice. A good way to apply ice is to put it ina plastic bag and thenput a thin towel betweenthe bag and the injuredjoint. Keep the ice inplace for 15 minutes.Repeat the icing three orfour times in the first dayor two. Then switch tohot packs.

“C” stands forcompression. An elasticwrap does just fine.

“E” is for elevation. Ifit’s the ankle that’sinjured, the leg shouldbe propped up. All thesesteps are done to preventbleeding and swellingduring the first two daysof an injury.

• “To keep my shower curtain from blowing

around at the bottom, I used clear packing

tape to attach a few large washers along the

bottom edge. They weigh down the plastic

so it hangs straight.” — T.V. in Maryland

• To make a temporary draft buster for a drafty

door or windowsill, roll a small bath towel and

secure with safety pins or tuck it into the leg of

a pair of pantyhose or tights. Then lay it along

the crack at the door or on the windowsill.

Install proper weatherstripping as soon as you

can.

• “If you like chunk cheese, use this tip to keep

it from molding: Wrap it very tightly in plastic

wrap, then cover with aluminum foil. No light

and no air!” — a Reader, via e-mail

• Finally found: A fantastic cure for foggy

windows. Get a chalkboard eraser, which can

be found at an office-supply store, and keep

it in your car. When windows fog up and you

can’t wait for the defroster, use the

chalkboard eraser. It works better than a cloth

and is easy to hold in your hand.

• “I stapled a plastic six-pack holder (the

plastic rings that hold the cans together) to

the inside of the door of my closet. I use the

loops to hold light scarves and occasionally a

belt. It’s really handy.” — V.E. in Indiana

• “I had a couple of really beautiful wall

calendars last year. To save some of the nicest

pictures, I had them laminated. They make

great placemats for snacks.” — S.D. in Arizona
