OVERVIEWThe University Hospitals 2019 System Stroke Conference and 14th Annual Neuroscience Nursing Symposium is designed to present the current guidelines on the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients with cerebrovascular disorders based on the latest advances in the fields of neurology, neurosurgery, neuro-interventional, neuro-critical care and neuroscience nursing. This information is important to improving the quality of care for our patients and supports our mission: To Heal. To Teach. To Discover.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES• Discuss the UH System Stroke Program triage and treatment guidelines

and High Reliability Medicine Initiatives

• Describe mechanical thrombectomy treatment, risks and benefits for an acute ischemic stroke patient

• Identify stroke mimics in the hyper-acute care of a potential stroke patient in the Emergency Department

• Describe relationship between a patent foramen ovale and the risk of stroke and treatment options

• Identify diatric stroke etiologies and describe the appropriate workup

• Discuss and illustrate the surgical treatment options and anticoagulation reversal for the intracerebral hemorrhage patient.

• Identify brain death criteria

• Describe carotid stenting treatment options for patient with carotid disease

• Discuss strategies on how to educate patient and family members about diabetes mellitus

• Identify how to best support and educate patient and family members in the early phase after stroke
