Dancing, hors d’oeuvres and libations, and, best of all, a chance to meet new neighbors and re-connect with those you may not have seen all year. All this on the evening of Saturday, December 2 at the GPRA’s Holiday Gala from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. at the Laburnum House on Westwood, courtesy of our Veritas School neighbors.

The Holiday Gala is one of the numerous advantages of your paid 2017 association membership. There’s still time to pay your $35 dues, using this newsletter’s coupon or through PayPal. You can even pay at the door that night. If your newsletter is addressed to “resident”, we have not received your 2017 dues.

This year the light refreshments will be provided by The Green Kitchen with complimentary beer, wine and soda. DJ Will Rollins will entertain with his musical choices. You’ll dance comfortably on the springy wooden floor, used also for ballerina practice and the traditional country dancers.

Working together on the set-up, decorating or clean-up from the party is another way to meet new neighbors. Contact Christina Shelor at [email protected] to volunteer.

Artwalk 2017 Includes Nine sitesBy Liza Forness

A proud Northside tradition for 28 years, the Northside Artists’ Holiday Artwalk features local Richmond artists and artisans in an Open House format show and sale. Timed to kick off your holiday shopping season, this year’s event will be held on Saturday, November 18th from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Nine sites in Laburnum Park and Sherwood Park are all within a four block walk through the crisp fall air!

Originally established by local pen-and-ink artist Eliza Askin and her partners as Northside Artists’ Open Studio, the show was restructured in 2014 for the 25th anniversary. This year’s event will once

again showcase 50 artists and heralds the addition of several first-time homes and new artists to the tour.

From locally made soaps and lotions, sweets and treats, and beautiful handmade jewelry to locally turned woodwork, hand-thrown pottery, fiber arts, and photography, this year’s selection of artists will offer something for everyone on your holiday shopping list. Shop local, support RVA art, and think outside the standard gift-giving box. STIR CRAzY and JADEAN’S SmOKIN’ SIx-O food truck will be on hand providing food and beverage options to sustain you through your shopping spree.

Ginter Park Library FundraiserThursday, December 7 • 7-9 p.m.By Tori Nunnally, Ginter Park Library Children’s AssociateEach year (mostly) the Ginter Park Library Advisory Board holds a holiday fete fundraiser at the library. It is an after-hours event where neighbors can come and enjoy an evening of good food, spirits, door prizes, and live music! It’s the one time of year you can eat, drink and dance in the library!

The Ginter Park branch is unique within the city limits because we are fortunate to have an Advisory Board comprised of neighborhood residents who help support, advocate, and promote the library in an effort to help us better serve our local community. We are so proud of our little library and we love the neighborhood communities we serve. During the past year with the help of our Advisory Board, we have hosted over 300 programs for the neighborhood and have had over 68,000 visitors walk through our doors!

All proceeds from the fete will benefit the library and are tax deductible. Tickets are $20 per person or $35 per couple. Guests must be 21 or older. Tickets are available at the library Nov. 1st - Dec. 1st with advance ticket-holders entered in a special drawing. Tickets may also be purchased at the door the evening of the event. For questions please call 804.646.1236 or email [email protected]

Currently our Advisory Board is rather small (the renovation really downsized our members) and consists of only Bellevue residents. We would love to expand the board’s size and have more participants from Ginter Park. The board meets the first monday night of the month at 6:30pm. Contact the above addresses if you are interested.

Officers for 2018“CONTINuITY” describes the nominees to the GPRA Board for 2018. The following names will be presented for approval at the November 16 general meeting:

President / Robin LeveyA 2014 newcomer to Ginter Park, this lifelong Richmonder has also lived in the far West End, mechanicsville, and the Fan. Though Robin came on the Board in February 2016 as advertising chair for the newsletter, she soon successfully coped with the challenges of the potential deforestation of two blocks of Seminary Ave. and various

tasks involved with the 2017 House Tour.

Robin joined Long and Foster Strawberry Street after a career in the medical device industry that spanned 30 years. She worked for several industry leaders, such as, Boston Scientific, Pfizer and uS Surgical in management, training, marketing and sales.

Vice President / Norma Murdoch-KittActive in the GPRA since its re-incarnation in 1978, Norma presided over the organization for 10 years in the late ‘80’s and ‘90’s. She and husband Jonathan preserved a house on Chamberlayne at Westwood in 1982 for her office as clinical psychologist and Jonathan’s office as a divorce and injury attorney. The murdoch-Kitts are parents of four grown children.

Norma has been active in the North Richmond YmCA, Homeward, the Disaster mental Health Committee for the Red Cross and the Richmond Criminal Justice Board.

Outside of work, Robin has a passion for traveling, on land or water. She has owned a 36’ sailboat and has captained it single hand on many trips. Having won several races in her class, she also taught women to race on her boat. Today, she enjoys traveling in her Airstream with her two Portuguese Water Dogs.

As her “platform” Robin says, “I wish for us all to have fun and to enjoy our beautiful historic neighborhood and find community together. I am very hopeful that we can build the membership up and find ways to cut our costs for a more healthy association.”

From 2009 to 2012 Norma represented the Third District on the Richmond School Board and promoted the origin and expansion of the International Baccalaureate program in Richmond Public Schools.

Since leaving the School Board, Norma has served as vice president and program chair for GPRA, using her political connections to bring public officials and political candidates to our general membership meetings so that they can hear our opinions and concerns directly. Part of her current responsibility entails recruiting block captains whenever vacancies occur.

Looking Back — Forty Years of GPRABy Anne Thorn

December 4 marks the fortieth anniversary of the Ginter Park Residents Association’s re-creation, after many years in the ‘50’s through ’70’s of not having any civic association.

The first GPRA had been formed on September 29, 1909 by the early residents who complained about the lack of enough quality teachers in the new school, street lighting and paving, and fire protection. The organization lasted until the annexation by Richmond in 1914, when the group lapsed for only a few months until it was obvious that residents would have to unite again to pressure the city to abide by the annexation promises. A civic association under another name was still alive in the late ‘40’s to complain about increased truck traffic on Chamberlayne.

Often neighbors are stimulated to organize when there is a perceived danger to the status quo. In 1977 there was a rumor that the Seminary was going to demolish the “Goodpasture House”, a faculty residence on the Brook/ melrose corner. Interestingly, several previous years of demolition of some of Ginter Park’s best houses on Chamberlayne Avenue and their replacement by apartments had not aroused neighborhood protest or action.

A Times-Dispatch article in a November Sunday morning alerted residents to a walking tour that sunny afternoon, led by realtor Wayland Rennie and architect Jim DePasquale. This was followed that evening by a meeting at St. Thomas Church, where architectural historian Bob Winthrop gave an illustrated talk on the history and architecture of our neighborhood and the need, encouraged by Rennie, for homeowners to create a civic organization. Plans were made for a second meeting, where by-laws, drafted by Bob Kyle, would be approved, formally creating an organization.

On December 4, 1977 officers were chosen, by-laws accepted and committees formed to deal with the proposed expansion of Richmond memorial Hospital, social service agencies eyeing Chamberlayne houses, and the future of Thirteen Acres. Historical preservation and information was a popular committee, spawning a walking tour of Hawthorne Avenue that fall.

While the issues have changed over forty years, the need for an association to maintain the historic residential character of Ginter Park has not.
