Principal’s Message The school council has now determined that

Saturday August 17th

will be the main day for celebrations for the community and the public to mark the Centenary of Kingsville Primary School this year. This of course is the closest Satruday to the official opening of the school which took place on 15/8/1919. The students will also celebrate on Thursday August 1st as 1/8/1919 was Day 1 for students at the school. A 2019 Centenary Working Party is now being set up and Jessica Rankin, Performing Arts teacher has taken on the role of convenor. Terry Cumming School Council President will also be a key contact and support as we move ahead with planning and organisation. The 2019 Working Party would like to acknowledge all the work undertaken by members of the 2018 CPR/Centenary sub committee of school council. Their investigations and research ensured a great deal was in place that the working party will now be able to take up, refine and use in making their final decisions in planning for the events in August. Thank you to Christie Miller, Sam Eason, Lilian Burton, Dale Schumann, Jeff McDonald, Graeme Hodgart, Sarah Thomas and Cassandra Le Marshall. Also other parentds/members of the community who contributed ideas during the year. The members of the working party are expected to grow in the near future and then meeting dates will be able to be planned. So please mark down both dates on your planners and watch out for further details.

Kingsville students benefit from a number of excursions, field trips, camps and even an interstate trip. The school camping program for 2019 is fully planned and will see students from years 3-6 participate during terms 3 and 4. Back in the early 1920’s students went on a trip to Bendigo and wrote about this

in the yearly school magazine. ‘We caught a train from Yarraville to Spencer Street at 7.30 a.m. and arrived at Spencer Street at about 7.50. We then waited until all the boys arrived and were given our tickets by Mr Gainey, from Kingsville, who was going with us. Within half-an-hour the train started and did not stop till it reached Lancefield Junction, about 27 miles from Melbourne. The next stop was Castlemaine, where some of us had a cup of tea and some sandwiches. As we left Castlemaine we saw the foundry which is known as Thompson’s Foundry. As we approached Bendigo, we saw old mines which were not working, also some which were in working order. When we arrived at the Bendigo Station we were met on the platform by the Headmaster of one of the schools. He took us outside the station, where the boys, whom we were going to play, were lined up. Each one had to stand opposite one of the Bendigo boys and introduce ourselves to them. He then took us to his home, where we had dinner. In the afternoon the Bendigo boys took us to the football ground, where we were to play them football. We defeated them: the scores being 1 goal 2 behinds to 18 goals 21 behinds, but our boys were much bigger than the Bendigo boys. After the match each boy took one of us home for tea. After tea most of the boys went to the pictures which were very good. Next morning, the boys showed us around the city. Some of us went to the Art Gallery, others to the Baths and Museum, and many other places. At about 10 o’clock we met at the Hercules, one of the mines in Long Gully. Most of the boys went down it and were given a piece of quartz with a speck of gold on it. The men showed us about the mine and explained the uses of different machines for running it. We went down 1368 feet. It was very hot down the mine and we were perspiring freely when we came to the top of the shaft. We appreciated the kindness of all connected with the mine. After dinner we had to get

ready to go home; for the train left at 3 o’clock. We said farewell to the boys and, within ten minutes, the train left. On the return journey the train stopped at every station, but it got dark very quickly, and we had to content ourselves with reading. At last we arrived at Footscray and said Goodbye to Mr Gainey and the other teachers. Mr Gainey had been very good in explaining the things that we saw on the way up, and at Bendigo, and altogether we had a very good time.’

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge - 2019 The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Kingsville Primary School is excited to be participating again. This week your child was given a username and password to login to the site. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 6th September 2019. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers. To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit www.education.vic.gov.au/prc. The Student Guide to the online system is on pages 6 and 7 of this newsletter.
