Update: Micon Will Carry the Torch Thursday, June 23, 2016 LUM Students Learn About Fireflies Recently, the 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program students were treated to a guest speaker — Indiana State Representative Sheila Klinker. Rep. Klinker taught the children about fireflies and their unique role in the environment and ecosystem of the State of Indiana. Klinker is also partnering with the LUM Campaign for Hoosier Families to give these students a unique opportunity. (She is pictured with her firefly model.) In the coming weeks, Rep. Klinker and Susan Brouillette, CHF director, will be working with Cindy Haley, 5th Quarter program director, to engage the students in advocating for the firefly being designated as the official insect for the State of Indiana. Forty-seven states have a state insect.” Indiana is only one of three states without an official insect — and the firefly would be an ideal choice. Later this summer Susan Brouillette will work with the students to write letters of support for the firefly and coordinate a way to get them to the appropriate committees within the state legislature. Stay tuned for further developments. Youth Groups — Service Day at LUM Last Thursday, the Heartland Community Church Youth Group (FYSH) and Battle Ground United Methodist Church Youth Group (Larger than Life) assisted in cleaning the LUM emergency shelter and office building as well as gardening and outdoor chores. One group worked with the 5th Quarter students to harvest their garden—and all of the fresh produce was donated to the St. Johns/LUM Food Pantry. To view more PHOTOs, click HERE. This was part of their 4th annual Mission Lafayette service week, where a group of middle and high school students work together to serve the local community. Their goal is to give these young adults an opportunity to grow their faith through service work in their home town. LUM is very thankful for the help from these two hard-working youth groups. LUM relies on groups like these to get most of our outside work done. Micon Selected for Bicentennial Torch Relay LUM Executive Director Joe Micon has been chosen by the Indiana Office of Tourism and Development to participate in the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay. Micon is one of 2,200+ Hoosiers statewide chosen for outstanding leadership qualities and contributions to their communities and to our state. The 3,200-mile relay will travel through all 92 counties, visit 260 cities and towns, 17 state and national parks, nine lakes and rivers, 27 national, state and local sites of historical significance and dozens of important Indiana attractions. Micon will run with the torch in Warren County on October 12. Prior to that, he will visit with children in the LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program, LUM Camp and LUM After School Program talking with them about the history of our state and asking each to write a letter to Indiana detailing their hopes and dreams for the future of our state. He will carry these letters with him as he runs. The torch relay starts on September 9 and ends on October 15 with a celebration at the Statehouse. Congratulations Joe! It has been announced that Amanda is going to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro this summer with the US Rowing Team. Amanda is a graduate of Harrison High School, where she competed in gymnastics, cross country and track and was named the female Athlete of the Year as well as valedictorian; and Purdue University, where she was on the Purdue Crew Team and was Most Valuable Oarswoman in 2012 & 2013. Amanda won Big Ten & NCAA honors—first-team All-Big Ten and second-team All-American. Amanda helped the Boilermakers win a championship at the 2011 Dad Vail and ACRA championships. As a part of the US rowing team, she won gold medals in the 2012 & 2013 at the World Rowing Championships in Lithuania and Austria. Last fall she won the gold medal at the World Rowing Championship in France Purdue & Harrison Alumna, Olympics-Bound Amanda Elmore gives us all another reason to follow the Olympics this summer and cheer for Team USA. Both the Harrison High School Raiders and the Purdue Crew Team are great friends of LUM in many ways — especially at Hunger Hike. Purdue Crew Team also supports LUM through their Row-A-Thon fundraising event which this past February donated $8,542 to the LUM Good Samaritan Fund. Go Raiders! Go Boilermakers! Go USA! The Crawford Family Farm was a featured destination during the Attica Garden Show on Saturday, June 18. John Crawford, father of Clarinda Crawford, gathered his family at the homestead, and they proudly welcomed over 100 guests and gave them tours of their lovely gardens. The Rev. Clarinda Crawford is the program director of the LUM Good Samaritan Program and ID Clinic. Below are pictures of a young Clarinda working on the farm with her dad, John. LUM Students Learn About Fireflies

Recently, the 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program students were treated to a guest speaker — Indiana State Representative Sheila Klinker.
