Positive displacement motor (PDM)
The positive displacement motors (PDM) of MICON Down-hole-Tools GmbH apply the reverse pumping principle fi rst established by Rene Moineau. A circulating drilling fl uid is pumped through the positive displacement motor, converting the hydraulic power of the fl uid into mechanical power to drive the drill bit independently of drill string rotation.
There is a direct proportionality between the fl ow rate and the speed of the PDM. An increase of the fl ow rate leads to an increase of rotational speed of the PDM. Similarly, there is a direct proportionality between the torque on the drill bit and the differential pressure drop across the PDM. The monitoring of differential pressure and fl ow rate at the drill rig provides reliable information about the current torque and speed of the bit.
The PDMs are equipped with an adjustable bend housing (ABH), which allows to set the PDM to a certain angle. The PDMs are driven in two modes:
• Sliding (without string rotation)In sliding mode, the PDM drills without string rotation. The bend housing on the PDM points constantly in the same direction. The rotating bit is continuously defl ected from the borehole axis in that direction, which causes the bit to follow a curve. The radius of the curve is affected by the ABH angle.
• Rotary (with string rotation)In rotary mode the drill string, inclusive PDM, is rotating. The adjustable bend housing of the PDM is also rotating in the borehole. The PDM drills nearly a straight hole.
By combining straight and curve sections, any desired bore path can be realized.
The MICON Downhole-Tools positive displacement motors (PDM) are available in sizes from 3 3/4" up to 9 5/8" and in lobe confi guration ranging from 4/5 to 9/10. Upon customers inquiry the customers manufacturing of PDM larger sizes are possible. The power sections are available in standard design and equidistant design. Equidistant stator design allows a nearly double pressure drop across the power section, con-
sequently generating the double torque and output power in comparison to the standard design. Considering the positive displacement motor from top con-nection to bit connection, the main components of the PDM are top sub, catch sub, power section, adjustable bend hou-sing (ABH), and bearing assembly. These components will be explained more explicitly on the following pages.
Sliding Mode - curvature drilling Rotary Mode - straight drilling
9
A brief description of PDM main components:
Top sub The top sub is across over PDM between the PDM and the drill string.
Catch sub assembly To secure inner and outer components of the PDM in case of any damage to the outer components of the PDM, according to the MICON Downhole-Tools standard all PDM are equipped with a catch sub assembly.
Power section The power section consists of a stator and a rotor inside. The outer diameter of the rotor is coated with chrome as wear protection. The inside of the stator is covered with a special rubber type, which is rigid enough to withstand abrasion and wear caused by solids in the drilling fluid and furthermore, it is flexible to provide a pressure seal between the rotor and the stator.
The contour of elastomer corresponds to the eccentric rotation of the rotor. Due to this shaping of rotor and stator, several sealed chambers between rotary and stator are formed in which the fluid moves over the length of the power section. The stator has one more lobe than the rotor. Increasing the number of lobes results in increased torque and decreased rotational speed. The two available designs of power section are standard design and equidistant design.
Standard design The stator steel housing has a cylindrical inner surface, the lobe contour is formed by the elastomer extruded between the housing and a core. The production cost are low , but thickness of the elastomer varies, which limit the pressure drop (and the torque) of the power section. The rotor is usually coated with chrome.
Equidistant design The stator housing has the lobe contour and is coated with a uniform layer of elastomer. Production costs are significantly higher than the standard design, but pressure limitation is approximately 1,5-fold higher. The rotor is usually coated with chrome or carbide.
Flex shaft To transmit the rotation and torque from the rotor with eccentric movement to the drive shaft, a flexible shaft is required. In some PDM sizes a ball drive shaft is installed.
Adjustable bend housing (ABH) The Adjustable Bend Housing (ABH) is located between power section and bearing assembly. It enables the PDM to be set on a desired tilt angle to achieve the pre-dicted build-up-rate for each drilling purpose.
Bearing assembly The bearing assembly consists of mud lubricated radial and axial bearing. The radial bearing are tungsten carbide bearings, located at the upper and lower part of the drive shaft. Between the upper and lower radial bearings the thrust roller bearing stack is located to support axial loads (weight on bit). The bearing assembly might be equipped with a stabilizer or protection sleeve on the outside.

Step 1: Break out lock housing Mark position with e.g. crayon. Break the lock housing; unscrew the thread until the gap between the shoulders of the lock housing and the adjusting sleeve is approximately 15 mm.Note: While unscrewing the lock housing, the gear tooth system between adjusting sleeve must remain engaged. While breaking the lock housing it may happen that the gear tooth system between offset housing and adjusting sleeve is disengaged. This must be avoided to prepare the thread connection between offset housing and double pin coming loose.
ABH adjustment
Adjustment of a PDM angle is described in the following steps. The figures illustrate how to adjust the angle.

Performance data and specification
The tables on the following pages provide an extensive overview of dimensional and operational data for each MICON Downhole-Tools PDM.
The first part of the table describes the general specification of the PDM. These are the overall length of the PDM, the length from bit to bend, the weight of the PDM, the recommended bit range for this PDM type, the standard bit con-nection (in parentheses also the top connection) and the maximal outer diameter of a slick (unstabilized) PDM.
The lobe configuration of the downhole PDM is presented, also graphically, in the next section of the table. Infor-mation about the flow rate, in which the PDM will run efficiently, can also be found in this section. Flow rate is proportional to the speed of the PDM. An increase of the flow rate leads to an increased speed of the PDM.
The speed to flow rate ratio illustrates the rotation speed of the bit when one gallon respectively liter of fluid is pumped through the PDM.
The maximum operational parameter of standard elastomer specifies the high-est values at which the PDM should be operated. The stated maximum power output is mechanical horsepower at maximum operational differential pres-sure and maximum flow rate.
In the bearing section the operational and maximum loads that a PDM can withstand during regular drilling operation (WOB) and during back reaming (Back-reaming weight) are presented.
The maximal static loads present values which might be applied on a PDM
when the drill string is not rotating. The PDM can be used for further runs even if such loads have been applied on the PDM over a period of time.
The following maximum static loads are defined:
• Bit overpull (maximum static) Maximum load through the inner components of the PDM when the bit is stuck in the hole. These calculations are based on static conditions; on the non-rotating drill string. The PDM can be used for further runs if the maximum bit overpull was not exceeded.
• Body overpull (maximum static) Maximum load on the outer compo- nents of the PDM when the PDM is stuck in the hole. These calculations are based on static conditions; on the non-rotating drill string. The PDM can be used for further runs if the maximum bit overpull was not exceeded.
• Set down weight (max. static) Maximum load, which can be applied on a PDM when it is placed on the bottom of the hole. These calculations are based on static conditions; on the non-rotating drill string.
If the maximum static loads have been exceeded, up to the parameters speci-fied on the ultimate loads section, the PDM cannot be used for further ope-rations. The PDM cannot be operated during the time that any of these loads are applied. Plastic deformation and damage to PDM components may occur in this loads area. If these loads are achieved, the PDM has to be sent back to the MICON Downhole-Tools GmbH for maintenance. If the loads on the
components exceeds the ultimate loads, the PDM might break in parts and these remain in the bore hole.
• Bit overpull (ultimate load) Maximum loads on the components that were installed in the interior of the PDM if the bit is stuck in the hole. Once the drilling PDM has been sub-jected to loading beyond maximum static loads up to ultimate loads, it must be sent back for maintenance to the MICON Downhole-Tools GmbHto check whether PDM components have been damaged.
• Body overpull (ultimate load) Maximal stress on the outer compo-nents of the PDM when it is stuck in the hole. Once the PDM has achieved these values, it must be sent back for main-tenance to the manufacturer to check whether PDM components have been damaged.
• Set down weight (ultimate load) This value is based on the maximum load on the PDM when it is stuck in the well, or has been placed on the bottom of the hole. Once the drilling PDM has achieved these values, it must be sent back for maintenance to the manufacturer to check whether PDM components have been damaged.

Dogleg severity capabilities
This table details a typical dogleg severity capability chart for that particular PDM for common hole sizes.
The table applies only for PDM with slick (unstabilized) bearing housing.
Guideline for performance chart
The following performance chart of a PDM illustrates how to determine downhole operational torque and speed of the PDM, by a known fl ow rate and differential pressure. The speed of the PDM is indicated on the left y-axis and the torque from the right y-axis. The x-axis shows the differential pressure.
In the diagram below, an example is given to illustrate how to determine downhole operational torque and speed of the PDM. In this example, the PDM is being run using 185 gpm with a differential pres-sure of 230 psi. To determine the down-hole PDM speed, draw a line up from
the differential pressure (230 psi) on the x-axis to the blue curve of 185 gpm (from point A to point B). Afterwards, draw a horizontal line from point B to the left y-axis (point C) and read the corresponded speed value.
To determine the operational output torque, draw a line up from point A (differential pressure of 230 psi) to the diagonal dashed line (point D), and then a horizontal line to the right y-axis
(point E) and read the torque value (about 650 ft-Ibs).Note that the vertical red lines repre-sent the operational limit for each ela-stomer of that specifi c PDM. Differential
pressure values beyond these limits are not recommended. For those fl ow rates between the given curves, interpolate an appropriate curve between the printed curves.
