International Women’s Day This Sunday 8 March, is #IWD 2020#. This is an ideal opportunity to chat to your kids about how important it is for everyone to generate a gender equal world. You can start your conversation by celebrating the achievement of women in sport, the arts, drama, education, politics, or in your local community. Encourage your daughters to aspire to great things in the future, and encourage your sons to challenge any traditional gender stereotypical attitudes they might be exposed to. It’s up to each and every one of us to make a positive difference to women. Over three years ago we became a lead school in the Respectful Relationships initiative, and I’m proud to say that ‘respect’ underpins our expectations at Bellbrae. Student voice and agency Victoria, as the Education state, ‘recognises the importance of empowering students,’ and how this can have a positive impact on their general health and well-being. I am of the firm belief that if a child has a positive mindset and is physically and mentally well, they have a good chance of succeeding in most facets of schooling. As such we need to provide opportunities that allow for students to make purposeful contributions to their learning and have representation in the way they express their knowledge and skills. This is something we are encouraging at Bellbrae and was very evident in the Starting Right program, which each class participated in during the first few weeks of term. We are also trying to provide more opportunities for our student leaders to make contributions in broader school decisions. On Tuesday the staff leadership team had a lunch meeting with our school captains and vice captains, where we discussed some of their visions and ideas of how we can improve our school. We will certainly take their ideas seriously and create more opportunities to empower our students for the future. Our Junior School Council office bearers also met with staff on Tuesday and are in the process of electing representatives from each year level. JSC provides an opportunity for students to be heard and directly create change for their school. In the past the JSC have had input into sports equipment purchased, initiated bus monitors, changed where buses line up, created urgency around the toilets which brought forward their renovation, got drink taps fixed, had input into where bins were placed, identified safety issues in the yard (hot dots on school map), etc. From a formal curriculum point of view, the ‘Capabilities’ dimension in the Victorian Curriculum, encompassing Critical and Creative Thinking, Ethical, Cultural and Intercultural, Personal and Social capabilities, all provide an ideal platform to further allow students to exercise voice and agency. International Women’s Day – This Sunday 8 March, is #IWD 2020#. This is an ideal

opportunity to chat to your kids about how important it is for everyone to generate a

gender equal world. You can start your conversation by celebrating the achievement of

women in sport, the arts, drama, education, politics, or in your local community.

Encourage your daughters to aspire to great things in the future, and encourage your

sons to challenge any traditional gender stereotypical attitudes they might be exposed

to. It’s up to each and every one of us to make a positive difference to women. Over three

years ago we became a lead school in the Respectful Relationships initiative, and I’m

proud to say that ‘respect’ underpins our expectations at Bellbrae.

Student voice and agency – Victoria, as the Education state, ‘recognises the importance of

empowering students,’ and how this can have a positive impact on their general health and

well-being. I am of the firm belief that if a child has a positive mindset and is physically and

mentally well, they have a good chance of succeeding in most facets of schooling. As such

we need to provide opportunities that allow for students to make purposeful contributions to

their learning and have representation in the way they express their knowledge and skills.

This is something we are encouraging at Bellbrae and was very evident in the Starting Right

program, which each class participated in during the first few weeks of term. We are also

trying to provide more opportunities for our student leaders to make contributions in broader

school decisions. On Tuesday the staff leadership team had a lunch meeting with our school

captains and vice captains, where we discussed some of their visions and ideas of how we can

improve our school. We will certainly take their ideas seriously and create more opportunities

to empower our students for the future. Our Junior School Council office bearers also met

with staff on Tuesday and are in the process of electing representatives from each year level.

JSC provides an opportunity for students to be heard and directly create change for their

school. In the past the JSC have had input into sports equipment purchased, initiated bus

monitors, changed where buses line up, created urgency around the toilets which brought

forward their renovation, got drink taps fixed, had input into where bins were placed,

identified safety issues in the yard (hot dots on school map), etc.

From a formal curriculum point of view, the ‘Capabilities’ dimension in the Victorian

Curriculum, encompassing Critical and Creative Thinking, Ethical, Cultural and

2 Bellbrae Primary School School Council Elections – Thank you to all the parents who have already voted. Please

remember that voting closes this Friday afternoon at 4pm and you need to include your full

name on the back of the envelope containing your ballot paper. Our School Council AGM

and first meeting for new office bearers will be on Monday 16th March. At this meeting the

School’s Annual Report to the community will be presented.

Special visit to the school – On Monday we hosted teachers from another local primary

school to learn more about our STEM program. This Friday we will welcome Nick

Beckingsdale, Executive Director Learning Teaching and Pathways Division and Justin

McDonnell, Executive Director, Wellbeing, Health and Engagement Division, DET, who will

be visiting Bellbrae to learn more about how we approach High ability/excellence programs,

STEM, primary to secondary transitions and Wellbeing programs. It is a fantastic honour for

our school to be selected for the visit, and these are all areas we have spent many years

focussing on to make our school an enjoyable and stimulating learning environment.

Clean up Australia Day – Thank you to all the families who made a positive impact on our

environment by encouraging our students to do a ‘community clean-up’ of the area close to

where they live. Participating in events such as these promote a culture of environmental

responsibility and sustainability, both aspects we place a lot of emphasis on in our school.

Have a great weekend and please remember to acknowledge International Women’s

Day on Sunday. With that in mind, I’ll leave you with the thoughts of a great woman,

Mother Teresa: ‘Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly

endless.’

SUPPORT HOLLY IN GRADE 6 DOING THE WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE

Hi, I'm Holly from Grade 6.

I want to shave my head and donate my hair to cancer because

somewhere, there is a girl who is having chemo and wishes she had

long, healthy hair like all the other kids at school. I hope it will give

her more confidence. Also, the money that I raise will go towards

vital research and practical support for Aussie families facing blood

cancer.

If you wish to support me and this great cause you can donate

money via the Leukaemia Foundation web site under;

SPORT NEWS

CITY TO SURF DISTRICT TENNIS

Last Friday Chloe Muscroft, Hazel Kadera, Clare Edmonds-Wilson, Emilia Bennett, Charles

Edmonds-Wilson, Gus Smith, Finn Bridgeford and Sascha Buckland competed at the City to

Surf District Tennis Tournament. The students were fantastic, and faced some very tough

competition throughout the day. It was pleasing to see such genuine sportsmanship and

encouragement by our students.

Congratulations to Clare Edmonds-Wilson and Hazel Kadera on winning their pool and

making it through to the finals. Both girls played great matches in the finals but were beaten

by some tough opposition from Torquay.

BELLARINE DIVISION SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Next Wednesday we are sending 26 students to compete in the Bellarine Division Swimming

Carnival at Kardinia Park. We wish the following students all the best and know that they will

give 110% in their races. GO TEAM BELLBRAE!!

BELLBRAE CROSS COUNTRY

The Bellbrae Cross Country is fast approaching, and will be held on Monday 20th April, the

second week of Term 2. Please ensure that your child is practising for the day as it is very

difficult to run distance runs without any practise. Ages 8/9 & 10 run 2kms, ages 11, 12/13

run 3kms.

The age groups are 8/9, 10, 11 & 12/13. These age groups are based on the age the students

are turning in 2020. Age groups 8/9 and 10 will be run separately for the Bellbrae Cross

Country, however times will be combined for these two aged groups and the top 10-15

competitors (based on times) will progress through to the City to Surf District Cross Country.

As with last year, we will be seeking parent helpers to marshal checkpoints around the

course. If you are available to assist on the day, please email Brigid Chapman

[email protected] .

WELFARE NEWS

It is inevitable our children are going to come into

contact with the online world, and whilst this

provides them with many great opportunities, it is

important we have open communication around

children’s online use, and implement appropriate

boundaries to assist them in navigating this space

safely. On the 16th March at 6.30pm we are hosting

a cyber-safety seminar at Bellbrae Primary School

called “Digital Tattoo” to assist in talking through

some of the common challenges in managing

online use with our children. Please see the flyer

attached for more information.

Another useful resource is the E Safety

Commissioner, with many tips and suggestions to

guide online use with children, such as how to

implement appropriate boundaries and manage

open conversations. Visit www.esafety.gov.au/ for

more information.

Feel free to get in touch if you are interested in

more information on how to talk to your children about online safety!

Thanks, Jess Swain (Mon/Tues/Thurs)

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY

Clean up Australia Day! We are lucky to have so many sustainable-minded students at our school who genuinely care for our natural world. From coming to school with ‘nude-food’ lunches to taking on initiatives in the school yard such as composting, we are very lucky to be surrounded by people who care for the environment. On March the 1st it was Clean-up Australia Day. Wouldn’t it be great if this day didn’t have to exist at all because it would be beautiful and clean all the time!? Unfortunately that’s not the case so some students and their families went the extra mile on the weekend, picking up discarded rubbish that had found its way into the parks, beach and walking tracks of our community. Thank you so much for sharing the photos of your clean-up with us and well done on improving the environment for everyone to enjoy! We hope that this inspires our school community to continue to ‘take 3 for the sea’ and assist where possible with removing harmful waste from our beautiful community throughout the whole year.
