LIFE EDUCATION – LIFE EDUCATION VAN FOLLOW UP Students in Years 3-4 visited the Life Education Van last week and explored medicines as drugs and the consequences of their misuse. Students in 3/4S were applying their learning by replicating the effects of different drugs on the human body through a visual representation. Working in cooperative groups and collectively producing a poster reflecting their learning, helped students to articulate and explore the concepts taught through the interactive sessions. It also helped them to form a better understanding of the human body. Check out the great posters 3/4S produced. I was particularly impressed with each groups’ ability to explain their learning to me last Friday.

SCHOOL DEBATING TEAM Our Year 5/6’s are participating in an online debating competition which provides a fantastic application and motivation for writing persuasive texts. Students have been learning about facts v’s opinions, how to prepare a rebuttal, providing research to support arguments and the use of persuasive language to influence an audience. Not only do the students compete in the competition but they also have the opportunity to judge a debate, learning about the way in which debates are scored and whilst picking up tips from other schools to improve their thinking and arguments. Our school debating team competed against Torquay College last week. Topic: Music Education should not be taught at school. The scores were 6.8 to 5.6 in our favour. Well done to Mahine, Laura, Aiman (main speakers) with assistance from Will.

NATIONAL ACTION DAY AGAINST BULLYING Last Friday was the seventh National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. 5/6H shared a powerful message against bullying as they explored the impact hurtful words can make to the ‘inside of a person’ or in this case the ‘inside of an apple’. Students were shown that people might look ok on the outside but if you could open them up you would see the harmful effects of hurtful words. They also viewed a video and discussed the role of bystanders. Just one of the many ways we work to counter bullying.

THINK TANK SESSIONS As mentioned in last week’s newsletter we will be offering a fantastic new opportunity for our students to further develop their critical and creative thinking strategies – Think Tank Sessions running fortnightly, Monday afternoons alternating with assemblies. On the week of assembly, we will be holding a slightly longer assembly 2.45-3.30pm which will ensure that we can hand out two student of the week certificates and still provide an opportunity for classes to share their learning. Assemblies will take place on the even weeks and the Think Tank sessions on the odd weeks. ARTISTS AND WRITERS FESTIVAL – OPEN NIGHT THURSDAY MAY 25 We will be hosting an Artists and Writers festival as part of our Open Week celebrations. In the lead up to Open Night, the teachers will be busy collecting samples of writing so that we can showcase the improvement and development of students writing across the school. Mrs Furlong has also been working her magic, developing samples of beautiful pieces of artwork to showcase on the night. A calendar for Term 2 will be sent home with next week’s newsletter. PERSONAL BEST (PB) BBQ – WEDNESDAY 29 MARCH I would like to extend my ‘Congratulations’ to each and every student receiving this award, as they help to make our school a great place to be! 2016 NAPLAN DATA The 2016 Naplan data has been released and we have much to celebrate. I have always been really proud of the Relative Growth Data of our school. It isn’t dependent on the number of students sitting the test, so greater consistency of data collection can be achieved. The Relative Growth Data is where you can truly tell the success of a school. It measures the impact of the quality of teaching and learning practices. The data collected through NAPLAN compares a student’s result in Year 3 to their result in Year 5. Schools want all students to make great growth. Even if a student is achieving well above level academically, we want to ensure that there is rigour and challenge in their learning so that students continue to progress at least 1.0 (level) per year. This year, almost all children (bar 1 to 2) across all areas tested made medium to high learning growth – which is quite extraordinary! This is the collective effort of all their teachers. In fact the progress made by the students in our school because of the exemplary teaching practices is fantastic. Most schools will show -25% making low, 50% making medium and 25% making high growth. The blue line marks the state. Across all areas, more of our students are making medium to high. Check out the results below.

Reading: It is good that we are below the state in the low growth (red) column, as this means all but one student made medium to high growth.

Writing: A large proportion of our students made high growth. Well above state expectations.

Spelling: Once again a large proportion of our students made high growth.

Numeracy: Most of our students made high growth. Well above state expectations.

Grammar and Punctuation: An equal number of students made mid to high growth.

Curriculum Our Teaching and Learning Framework, REACH is evident in all our classrooms. Teachers structure their literacy sessions around this framework and this assists us to best meet the learning needs of our students. Sharon and I regularly visit classrooms and listen to students read during their REVISIT/ ‘Read to Self’ time. It has been amazing to watch students come into the classroom and settle quickly into their reading routine. Students unpack their belongings and settle into reading very quickly at the start of the day. This reading time is very valuable because students develop their reading behaviours, work on their reading stamina and practise the reading strategy focus for the week. Remember this time is important reading time so please ensure your child is on time. If you have any questions about our reading program please see Sharon, myself or your class teacher

    Hi everyone!

The thing I liked about science week last week, at after school care, was the overnight crystal garden because it looked really cool when it was finished. We used crystal salt, water and food dye in a glass jar to create the crystal garden. We made some delicious pizzas…with a twist! They had cauliflower bases!! I loved the pizzas because I enjoyed making them, but I enjoyed eating them even more! Caitlin 1/2A.
