the Lower Mainland

will be treated to nine

days of home runs,

the 2011 Scotiabank Canadian

Open Fastpitch International

Championship welcomes women

softball stars from British

Columbia and the globe.

The championship runs until

July 17 and will take place

at three diamonds in Surrey.

Softball City will be the premier

destination, and games will also

be played at Sunnyside Park and

Cloverdale Athletic Park.

The Scotiabank Canadian Open

Fastpitch championship is one of

the top three women’s fastpitch

events in the world for 2011, and

will feature more than 400 ball

games, 1,300 athletes and 80

teams from around the world.

“This event is important to

the game on so many levels,”

said Softball Canada president

Kevin Quinn. “To all the players,

through all the divisions,

it is a chance to measure

yourself against the best at

your level of competition in a

fun, professionally organized

tournament.

“Lifetime memories are made

here.”

There will be three divisions

“(We) are pleased that Surrey

has the opportunity to welcome

the world’s top fastpitch teams

to this tournament,” said Bal

Gosal, Canada’s Minister of State

(Sport). “These young athletes

will experience the thrill of

participating in an international

competition and get to know the

true meaning of spirit.”

In the Women’s Elite division,

the host club, the White Rock

Renegades, will be taking on

teams from California, Venezuela,

and Nanjing, China. The host

Renegades will have a total of

six teams taking part in the Open

Championship.

British Columbia will be

year’s championship.

THE CANADIAN Open Fastpitch

International Championship enters

its second summer under this

particular banner after a similar 2010

competition, the Canada Cup, was

cancelled following the 2009 event.

Last year, the Canada Cup was

replaced by a scaled-down Canadian

Open due to a scheduling confl ict

with teams – the International

Softball Federation’s Women’s World

Championships were to end in

Venezuela just one day before the

Canada Cup was to begin.

The Canadian Open was created

to fi ll the void, with both Futures

(under-19) and Showcase (under-16)

youth divisions taking the fi eld.

This year, the international

component returns for the 2011

Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch

International Championship, with six

of the world’s top teams – including

Canada, Australia and the reigning

world champions from the U.S. – set

to compete.

“This community has a great

legacy of promoting and supporting

women’s fastpitch events, and to

be the home of one of the three

largest tournaments in the world,

drawing the top teams and athletes

to this event, is extremely exciting,”

said Canadian Open chairman Greg

Timm. “This is a huge event for a

Canadian city to host and we know

this will elevate the level of the sport

even higher for our young athletes.”

More than 80 teams – and

1,300 athletes – will compete at

this year’s event, which runs July

9-17 at Softball City (2201 148 St.),

Cloverdale Athletic Park (16982

64 Ave.) and Sunnyside Park (15455

26 Ave.).

Teams will be split into four

divisions – International, Club,

Futures and Showcase.

Danielle Lawrie sends a pitch towards a USA batter during the championship game of the 2009 Canada Cup tournament. The USA won 3-2.

THE CANADIAN Open – or the

Canada Cup, as it was called in its

previous incarnation – has been

entertaining crowds in Surrey for

decades, dating back to the fi rst

tournament in 1993.

The plans for the tournament

were actually put in motion a year

prior, when members of the local

softball community decided – with

softball having been added to

the Olympics in 1991 – Canadian

softball players needed to be better

developed.

That fi rst year, the tournament

was held in June, and nearly

44,000 spectators in total took in

the action for a week in June, with

more than 56,000 attending the

tournament’s second year.

A California-based club team,

the Redding Rebels – whose star

pitcher, Lori Sippel, went on to

become head coach for Canada’s

national team – was the darling

of the tournament’s early years,

winning the title in both ‘94 and ‘95.

The third Canada Cup saw more

than 70,000 fans pass through the

gates at Softball City, and after

a week of action, the California

Commotion were crowned champs.

IN 1997, with no Olympic

tournament for another four

summers, organizers of the

Canada Cup – which had become

wildly successful and well-

recognized globally and a high-

calibre event – decided to take a

year off, but the tourney came back

strong in 1998.

The ‘98 event – the ninth annual

– was the longest of any previous

tournament, stretching out over

nine days in mid-June.

Team Australia, featuring some

of the world’s best power hitters

and top pitchers, took the title

that year. There was positive

news on the business front, too,

as attendance came within 5,000

spectators of cracking the 100,000

mark.

Delta Heat ‘91’s Lauren Mew slides safely into home base during a Canadian Open Fastpitch Championship game against Surrey Storm ‘92 at Cloverdale Athletic Park in 2010.

Sixteen international teams were

added to the mix in 1991 – fi ve of

which were qualifi ers for the 2000

Olympic Games – and more than

100,000 fans took in the action.

Australia and Team USA Gold

battled for the fi rst-place trophy,

with the US winning 1-0 on a

game-clinching home run.

Australia advanced to the fi nals

the next two years, defeating

China in 2000 and losing to Japan

in 2001.

FROM 2002-04, the Canada

Cup set new attendance records,

peaking in 2003 when 113,916 fans

walked through the gates. That

week, Team USA Elite won the

title in dramatic fashion – hitting a

game-winning homer in the bottom

of the 10th inning to edge Australia.

Australia lost another Canada

Cup in 2004 to Japan, but won the

following year, shutting out USA

Elite 3-0.

In 2006, with the Beijing

Olympics on the horizon, the

Canada Cup held one of its more

drama-fi lled, intense tournaments,

with Canada making the fi nals for

the fi rst time since 1996. Australia,

however, ended up defending their

title with a 6-4 win.

In 2007, it was the USA’s turn

to stand atop the podium after a

5-0 shutout of Japan in the fi nal

game, but the Japanese squad

returned the following year to win

it all, beating perennial contenders

Australia 4-2.

In 2009, the tournament was

held under the Canada Cup banner

for the fi nal time, and though the

weather was wildly inconsistent

– ranging from intense heat to

shivering cold rain delays – the

play on the fi eld was as solid as

ever, as Canada again made it

to the fi nals, but lost 3-2 to the

United States in a nail-biter that

was decided on the fi nal play of

the game – at a play at the plate,

no less.

URING THE WEEK

of the 2011 Scotiabank

Canadian Open

Fastpitch International

Championship, the

focus is on the world-class athletes,

international competition and the

local youth teams.

But behind the scenes is a large,

diverse group of volunteers tasked

with ensuring the 1,300 athletes

converging on Surrey July 9-17 have

a memorable experience at one of

the largest fastpitch events on the

planet.

The number of leaders serving on

the host committee is larger than the

entire volunteer group of many other

tournaments.

There are seven directors, led by chairman

Greg Timm, as well as 30 committee chairs

that oversee groups of volunteers who

handle fi nances, game supervision, offi cial

scoring, announcing, transportation, website

administration and site supervision.

“We have 450 volunteers,” said Timm. “And

they have different profi les. We have good,

community-based people who just love to

volunteer. They do things like the parking and

hospitality.

“Then we have the specialists. The

scorekeepers, the statisticians, people to do

scheduling, anything to do with the sport.”

Ralph and Janet Van Nes are two of the

hundreds of volunteers lending a hand during the

Canadian Open.

The couple has been volunteering there for 18

years, dating back to the early days when it was

called the Canada Cup.

Janet is one of the best, most-experienced

volunteer scorekeepers in the country. While she

spends her time in the scorekeepers both tracking

the game, Ralph – a self-admitted “ham” – admits

he has a much easier gig as P.A. announcer.

“All I have to do is say, ‘Now, batting…’ ”

he said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Most volunteers at the championship are

from the Surrey/White Rock area, but a “fairly

extensive” base of softball-oriented help

comes from across the Lower Mainland, and

are the people who will handle tasks such as

maintaining statistics, said Timm.

“We also get volunteers from Alberta,

Prince George and Vancouver Island. They like

being involved in tournaments such as this.

They get a sense of fulfi llment and take great

price in doing a good job at an event of this

stature.”

Volunteers are asked to commit to working

20 hours during tournament week, receiving

Canadian Open souvenirs and meal vouchers

in return. But there are times during the

tournament when longer hours are needed.

“Many will go beyond those 20 hours if

we ask for an extra shift,” said Timm. “The

volunteers who are already there have always

stepped up.”

Head coach Kim Wright watches her Surrey Storm ‘93 team in action during a recent tournament in Cloverdale. Wright has coached at Canada Cup and Canadian Open tournaments in both the International and Futures divisions.

HETHER IT’S at the

Kim Wright can’t single

out just one highlight in more than a

decade of coaching at the Canada Cup

international fastpitch tournament.

There are just too many.

She has won with the Surrey Storm

’90s in the Futures (19-and-under)

division, served as an assistant and

head coach with Canada’s national

and development teams, and brought

a young, inexperienced Venezuelan

team to Surrey – all since her fi rst

appearance back in 1999.

“I love the tournament. It’s world

class,” said Wright. “The teams that

used to come, continue to come, it’s

great.”

The Canada Cup, launched in 1993 at

Softball City, staged its last tournament

in 2009. A year later, a new event – The

Canadian Open Fastpitch International

Championship took its place, with more

emphasis on the youth divisions (Futures

and the under-16 Showcase age group).

But to many, only the name has

changed.

“Talk to any elite player, and that was

their favourite tournament,” said Wright.

“And it (the Canadian Open) is still the

favourite tournament. It was the scouting

tournament, where everyone came to

see what everyone else had. It was like

a mini-Olympics, it had that quality of

teams there.”

Wright served as an assistant coach

with Canada’s national team, and

was also head coach of the Canadian

Development team – Softball Canada’s

second team – in Canada Cup

competition.

But in 2001, she was in the unique

position of coaching against her

country’s national team. She served as

head coach of Venezuela at the Canada

Cup, the South American country’s fi rst

appearance at a tournament against

Olympic-calibre competition.

“Our goal at the time was just to not

be mercied,” Wright recalled. “To see how

far the Venezuelans have come in softball

is a treat.”

The Venezuelans were mercied (when

trailing by 10 runs, a team loses on

a “mercy” rule before the full seven

innings are played) on occasion that year.

But they also showed well in a 5-3 loss

to the powerhouse Australia team, and

upset Taiwan 10-8.

That was the fi rst step towards the

country earning its best-ever showing

at a World Championship, a tournament

they hosted a year ago in Caracas, with

Wright again serving as head coach.

“We fi nished fi fth,” she smiled.

“When I fi rst took over the team, we

were ranked ninth or 10th. Last year, we

fi nished higher than Australia. It was

a huge improvement for Venezuelan

softball.”

The Surrey resident got to

see fi rsthand how important the

achievement was for the country, which

supported the team with sell-out crowds

of 15,000 throughout the week-long

competition. It also caught the attention

of the country’s president.

“We were losing 2-1 to China, and

I see (Hugo) Chavez walk into the

dugout,” she said, noting the visit was

totally unexpected. “I was thinking to

myself ‘oh, no!’

“But he put his arm on my shoulder

and said ‘it’s all right coach,’ then sat at

the end of the dugout, put his feet up

and sipped his tea while watching. We

came back and won 6-2.”

Between her two stints in Venezuela,

Wright coached in the Surrey Storm rep

program, taking the Storm ‘90 midget

team to the provincial and national

championships, as well as a win at the

2008 Canada Cup Futures tournament.

“Winning that tournament with my

’90s is a highlight. We’re still the only

Canadian team to win the Canada Cup

Futures division,” she said.

A coach since she was 22 years

old, with a career that will reach the

quarter-century mark in two seasons,

Wright insists she is nowhere near the

end.

“Maybe when I have a cane and no

teeth,” she laughed when asked about

retiring. “I’m still young, just 45, and

as long as I have a passion and I’m

able to help the athletes I coach, I’ll

stay involved. When I can’t, I’ll retire.

“But I don’t see that in the near

future because I love the game.”

• Blackie Spit Park (1577 128

St.) is one of the best birding areas

in Canada with almost 200 species

recorded in a calendar year. The

sandbars are a favourite spot for

harbour seals and their pups.

The park also has an off-leash

dog area, swimming beach, picnic

area, washrooms, natural area

trails, and walking paths.

• Situated on the banks of the

Nicomekl River is Elgin Heritage

Park (13723 Crescent Rd.). The

two entrances are on either side

of a forested area with many large

trees often used by eagles and

hawks to survey the surrounding

area for prey. The park is home

to the Historic Stewart Farm, and

features picnic facilities, trails and

a nature conservation area.

• Although the harness-race

track is closed for the summer,

Fraser Downs Racetrack and

Casino (17755 60 Ave.) is still

open, with more than 400 slot

machines, classic table games,

and a racebook simulcast area.

• A 6.5-kilometre walk along the

Ocean Park shoreline (Crescent

Beach) combines shorelines

and trails for a true West Coast

experience. Explore tidal pools

for hermit crabs, sand dollars,

sea stars and other marine life

during low tide. Harbour seals

are sometimes found in the

water, as are spouting grey

whales on the horizon. Visitors

are encouraged to keep an eye

on the high water mark, as the

return path may change as the

tide comes in.

The pier at Crescent Beach is one of the many sights along the Ocean Park Shoreline walk.

SURREY STORM ‘93 (FUTURES GOLD U18)

ammie Olexa, an 18-year-old softball player, went from

playing house ball in Penticton to playing on one of

the top teams in the city: The Surrey Storm ‘93 U18

Futures Gold.

Sammie and her sister Francis have always

dreamed about pursuing their softball careers, but

were limited in training and coaching in Penticton. Their parents decided to

move the whole family to Delta, so their kids could pursue their dreams.

Sammie has made her

parents proud, following

her life-long dream and

receiving a full scholarship

to Simon Fraser University

– where she is in her second

year of studies – to play

softball.

Both Sammie and her

sister will be playing at the

2011 Scotiabank Canadian

Open Fastpitch International

Championship this summer,

from July 9-17. Francis plays

on Delta Heat ‘96.

DELTA HEAT (DELTA

GOLD U18)

Two players have been

with the North Delta

Softball Association since

they were fi ve years old:

17-year-old twins Rachel

and Megan Jackson have

been successful in making the Heat ‘94 (now Delta Heat Midget A) team since

Squirt. They have played both softball and soccer in the local community and

were together on the same teams with SurDel Soccer since they were fi ve

years old.

Both girls attend Seaquam Secondary, were in the Softball Academy for

Grades 8-10, and now tutor in Grade 11. The twins are heavily involved in the

Solutions Society at their school and have organized several fundraising/

global citizen activities over the last couple of years at Seaquam and in the

community. They were both recognized with special Service Awards at a

ceremony at the Seaquam theatre on June 2.

The pair volunteer on younger Heat teams when they

get a chance. Megan pitched in just recently with the

newest North Delta Baseball – Challenger Division for kids

aged four and up with physical and mental disabilities.

The twins are planning to pursue a university education

in sciences – with Rachel wanting to go into engineering

and Megan into physiotherapy. Their current course load of

Physics 11, Math 11 and Chemistry 11 keeps them working

hard studying in between playing sports at an elite level.

SOUTH DELTA INVADERS (FUTURES SELECT U18)

Stephanie Horsley has been making the journey to

Delta from Williams Lake and playing for the team in

several tournaments. Her parents take turns bringing her

here, staying with relatives or in booking a hotel.

Horsley plans to attend the University of Regina next year.

SURREY STORM ‘92 (SURREY FUTURES GOLD U18)

Tory Cardinal is described as an inspiration to her entire

team. After her mother passed away from cancer, she has

been raising herself along with her two siblings. She drives

herself to games and practices and is very independent.

Emilie White has always played up to any challenge and in

big games, makes a difference with her speed. Having two

brothers – both good ball players – Emilie has learned a lot.

She now works at BMO. Emilie had a scholarship to

a school in Lincoln, Nebraska, but she chose to go to

Douglas College instead.

Joan Hayes and Kimberley Maedel are also attending

Douglas College and playing a big role on the team

as rookies. They came to the club ready to take on

leadership roles.

WHITE ROCK RENEGADES ‘95 (SHOWCASE GOLD U16)

Sara Groenewegen constantly overcomes hurdles in her

life – she is a diabetic softball all-star.

She plays on the White Rock Renegades ‘95 team and

has always dreamed about playing in the Canadian

Open Fastpitch International Championship after being a

bat girl a few years ago at the event. Now she is ready to

hit the bases and play in the largest fastpitch tournament

in Canada.

Groenewegan and teammates Toryce Westgard

and Andrea Sidor each had sisters play on the 1991

Renegades, which won the national championship four

times and played in the Canada Cup fi ve times. They are

all former bat girls in the Canada Cup.

WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

ELANIE MATTHEWS was

on Simon Fraser University’s

softball team when it won the

gold medal in the NAIA National

Championships in 2005 and the

silver medal in 2004.

She led the NAIA in batting average,

runs per game, doubles per game,

home runs per game, slugging

percentage and total bases per

game in 2008. She participated

in fi ve Canadian championships

and received the highest batting

award in 2000, and was named to the

All-Star team in 2004.

She’s been a member of Team

Canada for fi ve years.

Matthews, 24, is a local girl to

the core, born in Vancouver and

raised in Surrey. She attended

SFU on a softball scholarship and

graduated with a degree in business

and fi nance. She now works for

PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Her family lives next to the

Cloverdale Athletic Park, so Matthews

didn’t have to travel far to take in softball

action.

“I got to see the national team playing

regularly out in Surrey so as a young girl it

was the perfect opportunity for me to aspire

to a higher level of softball,” she said.

“Today I really enjoy playing in my own

backyard and it’s always exciting for me.”

Matthews will be helping out at

the Shaw Youth Clinics at the 2011

Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch

International Championship and

looks forward to meeting the girls

and boys who will be working on

improving their softball skills.

“It’s a great opportunity for us

to share our stories and motivate

the kids who turn out. It’s helpful

for them to learn that if they work

hard and are dedicated, softball can

take them a long way in their lives.”

And that’s something she follows

in her own life, too. The Team Canada

outfi elder plans to hold down her day

job in downtown Vancouver and

play for Canada in the evening.

“I’m going to work at the

offi ce during the day and

then battle traffi c to get

back home on time.

I should arrive at the fi eld in time for the

warm-up.”

Matthews said she didn’t realize that she

was the poster girl for the 2011 Scotiabank

Canadian Open Fastpitch International

Championship (featured on the cover of

this publication) until she went to her

parent’s place recently and opened the

newspaper. The left-handed batter said she

has never been the poster girl before and

is honoured to have been chosen.

JENNIFER YEE is one of the most

exciting players to watch this year on Team

Canada – a former Olympian and veteran

of many international competitions.

A North Delta athlete, Yee fi rst competed

at the tournament in the Futures division

in 2004. Even before she was eligible to

compete, she remembers coming to the

Canadian Open softball tournaments with

her team to watch the inspiring action, and

recalls how motivating it was.

Jennifer Yee is a North Delta athlete and one of the top softball players in the country.

Not only is Yee one of the top softball players in the country,

she’s also an impressive scholar. Yee completed her undergradu-

ate degree in materials science and engineering at the Georgia

Institute of Technology in Atlanta. While attending Georgia Tech,

Yee was named a top-three fi nalist for the 2010 NCAA Player

of the Year Award. Currently, Yee is working on her mas-

of Massachusetts Lowell.

KALEIGH RAFTER has been a regular on Team

Canada for the past few years. The blonde catcher

and fi rst baseman from Guelph, Ontario fi nished

her criminal justice degree at Florida State Uni-

versity two years ago. Rafter said she has many

great memories of playing in the B.C. softball

championship.

She loves playing for Team Canada and

still gets overwhelmed when they bring

the jerseys out and she puts one on. She’s

always aspired to play for her country.

Rafter is looking forward to helping out

at the Shaw Youth Clinics this year at the

2011 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch

helping teach younger girls why softball

is such an amazing sport and seeing them

become involved at such a young age.

CLOVERDALE FURY

(SHOWCASE SELECT U16)

One of the top players on the

Cloverdale Fury softball team,

Shelby Priest of Surrey has a lot

to look forward to this summer.

She just won a prestigious award

from the lieutenant governor of

the province, along with a silver

award from the Duke of Edinburgh

to highlight her top leadership,

service and involvement in the

community and her school, Lord

Tweedsmuir Secondary. She’s

also getting ready to pitch and

play fi rst base for her team at the

2011 Canadian Open Fastpitch

International Championship,

from July 9-17.

SOUTH SURREY-WHITE ROCK

THUNDER ‘94 (SURREY

FUTURES SELECT U18)

Heidi Gulka is a fi rst-string

third baseman and also one of the

pitchers. The coach says in addition

to being one of the team’s top

players, Gulka is a well-rounded

athlete, playing school volleyball

and soccer.

This summer she’ll be joining

a U18 Gold team for a European

soccer tour as one of their keepers.

Erin Donnelly is another

Thunder ‘94 pitcher. In 2009, she

injured her knee playing soccer

and re-injured it three weeks later

playing volleyball. Turns out, she

had a torn ACL which resulted

in her missing the entire softball

season.

After knee surgery, and with a

lot of dedicated rehabilitation and

training, she’s come back to

be one of the team’s top

pitchers.

With her mom, Rumley

has raised $1 million for
