Thought of the Week “It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.” - Edmund Hillary
Virtue of the Week This week, we explore the virtue of idealism. A person with ideals is a persom who really
cares about what is right and meaningful in life. When we practise idealism, we have
beliefs that mean something to us and we follow them. We don’t just accept things the
way they are. We want to make a difference. Idealists dare to have big dreams and
then pursue them as though they are possible. Please consider taking a few minutes this
week to discuss being idealistic with your child[ren].
Principal’s Message The weeks are quickly passing and it is wonderful to see all learning spaces a hive of
activity. The Australian Curriculum is our school’s curriculum and all teachers strive each
day to ensure learning offerings provide opportunities for learners to develop their
knowledge and understanding, think, be active by doing and applying concepts and
skills at the various stages of the learning continuum. Parkhurst State School Teachers
also make curriculum adjustments and modifications for learners to ensure concepts
and skills are differentiated according to their ability and interests.
All Teachers have provided input into our school’s Curriculum, Assessment and
Reporting Framework (CARF), with the support of Ms Kirsty Hay, Mrs Lyn O’Farrell, Ms
Dianne Stace and the four Neighbourhood Mayors. The CARF is a living document and
is updated regularly to ensure quality and consistent curriculum offerings are designed
and delivered across the school. The knowledge, concepts and skills from our CARF
inform and are assessed at regular junctures and are used to inform the academic
achievement of all learners through Face to Face Reporting and Semester Report Cards.
Wednesday was the annual National Simultaneous Storytime from Space.
Our learners had the opportunity to hear Australian Author, Philip
Bunting’s book, ‘Give Me Some Space’ read by the astronaut Dr
Shannon Walker from the International Space Station. A big thank you is
extended to Mrs Lyn O’Farrell for coordinating this annual event.
Over the next few weeks, there are many activities and school events including our
Term Two ‘Fantasy’ themed Disco, a Puppet Show Performance of ‘Making Friends’, the
Pumped Sports’ ‘Ninja Dash’, the weekly AFL AusKick Program, our annual Sports Day
and Under Eights’ Activity Session, the Rockhampton Show and our Term Two Assembly
of Excellence. It is important to continue making every day of learning count.
Until next week,
Lyle Walker

2021 Theme for Learning 2021 is our year of I-M-P-A-C-T. A year for us all to
consider the impact we have on our own learning,
our school, community, country, world, ourselves
and others. It is also a year to consider the impact
our words, actions and gestures may have on others,
through being kind, acknowledging others and
taking the time to let others know that their actions
or words have made a difference to you.
Each week, we will acknowledge our IMPACT
Makers of the Week, learners that have made a
difference to others, themselves, our school and the
community. Learners who demonstrate our 5Rs may
also be recognised for their IMPACT on others.
IMPACT Makers of the Week Congratulations go out to this week’s ‘IMPACT
Makers’, recognised for making a difference.

2021 Premier’s Reading Challenge The 2021 Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual
state wide initiative for all Queensland School
learners from Prep to Year 9, as well as children (aged
up to 5 years) enrolled in an Early Childhood Centre.
The Premier's Reading Challenge aims to improve
literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure
and learning. Visit Premier's Reading Challenge for
key timeframes and lists of suggested books. A big
thank you is extended to Mrs Lyn O’Farrell and Ms
Dianne Stace for once again coordinating our
participation in the challenge.
2021 Premier’s Coding Challenge The 2021 Premier's Coding Challenge is an
annual state wide initiative for all Queensland
students in Years 3 to 10. The Premier's Coding
Challenge aims to encourage an interest in
Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM) in Queensland students.
Technologies and digital services can have an
impact on people's mental, physical, social and
emotional health. Developing skills to improve
digital wellbeing is important in today's world
and who better to help raise awareness amongst
Queenslanders than our budding developers
and designers, aspiring engineers and young
innovators.
The challenge in 2021 is to code an interactive
and innovative digital solution to raise awareness
of digital wellbeing. This can include :
– work and study life balance
– postural considerations of using technology
– personal security and safety online
– adhering to social media ethics and protocols
Entrants can develop an app, game, animation
or website, and they must submit a short video
showcase with their entry. Students can enter as
individuals or as a pair, in one of 8 categories. To
see examples of previous winning entries, view
the 2020 Premier's Coding Challenge Awards
Ceremony Winners receive prizes of coding and
robotic kits (total prize pool $10,000).
Road Safety Thank you to all members of the Parkhurst State
School community who continue to follow and
model road safety for our learners. It is important to
use the designated pedestrian crossing when it is in
operation at peak traffic times, to enter the school
only via the pedestrian foot gates, not the big gates
used by vehicles, to consider using the school’s Kiss
and Go Zone by staggering your collection times
(the Zone is supervised until 3:30 p.m. every day),
and utilising the bus services.
Each morning and afternoon are opportune times
to model being road and traffic smart for your
children. These are life skills, learners will take with
them an apply to real situations when they
encounter them.
2021 Romp in the Park Parents and Carers are invited to attend the annual
Romp in the Park Session from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

person, including children of all ages), pack a
bag with a snack and a drink, grab your hat and

filled with fabulous activities. This event is a
COVID safe event and will be running as per any
mandated COVID safe requirements.

One Report Cards will be emailed in Week Nine.
Now is a good time to check that your email
addresses on our system are current.
The Ninja Dash is Coming ! The popular ‘Ninja Dash’, facilitated by our local
‘Pumped Sport’ is coming to Parkhurst State School
on Monday May 24th 2021. Information has been
sent home regarding costs. Please consider visiting
the Ninja Dash Website or their FaceBook Page
‘Kindy Sport’.
Flu Season What are the symptoms of influenza or the ‘Flu’ ?
‐ chills, shivering and fever (temperature over 38
degrees Celsius)
‐ headache
‐ muscle aches and pains
‐ sore throat
‐ stuffy or runny nose
‐ sneezing
‐ dry cough
‐ tiredness
‐ trouble breathing
If you experience any of these symptoms, you
should avoid contact with other people wherever
possible. If you are concerned about your
symptoms, or they become worse, you should seek
medical advice immediately.
It is especially important to get medical advice
early in the course of illness in children, and in
people who have certain chronic medical
conditions.
Remember, while cold and flu medications may
relieve the symptoms, you are still capable of
passing on the infection and should avoid contact
with other people.
Construction Update Many people have commented on how amazing
our new L Block looks from the highway, with its vivid
red, signage and school logo. The external
cladding continues to be added and scaffolding is
coming down. Last week, louvres and windows
were installed and internal cabinetry arrived on site
for installation this week. Construction is well
underway on the covered walkway from L Block to
Mr Ridgley’s Prep R Classroom, with concrete
scheduled to be poured this weekend.
