Teaching With Word Walls! The pages in this workbook have been designed to be used independently oras a supplement to the lessons taught using a classroom Word Wall. Thewords used in this practice book coordinate with the word cards contained inthe Teacher’s Friend Word Wall Word Set - Homophones.

Please note: One way to help students identify confusing words iswith a visual cue. With this in mind, we have framed the wordsin each lesson by emphasizing the ascending and descending let-ters. In this way a student will quickly recognize the differencebetween similar words and be better able to remember eachword’s correct spelling.

Whether you use a Word Wall or not, you will find that these worksheets andstudent word cards will help students improve their reading, writing, spellingand listening skills.

Why Teach Homophones?Words that sound the same but have a different spelling and meaning are known as homophones orhomonyms. These are some of the trickiest words to spell and define. To become proficient readers, writ-ers and spellers, students need to master these words at a young age.

More and more young learners are becoming proficient at using a computer with their schoolwork or tosimply write a story or letter. One thing about computers is that they recognize only misspelled words. They do not recognize correctly spelled words that are used incorrectly. In other words, the spell check incomputers does not know the difference between such words as: by, buy and bye. Unfortunately, many stu-dents don’t know the difference either.

By using your Word Wall and the lessons in this Practice Book to teach homophones, young learners willlearn that many words, even though they are pronounced the same, are spelled differently and can havetotally different meanings. The words in these lessons represent common homophones that are often mis-spelled or pronounced or confused by young learners. These words are especially important for youngreaders and speller to know and understand. As your students learn when and where to use differenthomophones and the correct way to structure a sentence, they will be better prepared to incorporate newwords and more difficult concepts into their writing and language development.

The Student Word Cards! In this book you will also find a set of reproducible, interactive word cards for each group of homo-phones. Duplicate the word card page onto coloredindex paper and give one page to each student.Instruct the students to trace each word and tracethe frame around it. Students can then cut theword cards apart and use them as flash cards with afriend or take them home to practice with a parent.

The Worksheets! The worksheets in this book (Homophones) are designed for the intermediate learner. You will find that most students can do the worksheets with very little coaching from the teacher after the introductory lesson. Please notice that each page asks the student to "read, whisper and finger-clap each word in the word box before beginning." This multi-sensory word practice will "quietly" help reinforce the teaching you have done using the Word Wall. It also offers an effectiveway for you to visually monitor your students as to whether they are on task.

With or without the use of a Word Wall, these worksheets provide an excellent tool to review and practice wordspreviously taught. They can effectively be used by both teacher and parent.

Note: The practice worksheets are designed for students to use block or manuscript lettering. However,as the teacher, you may prefer to have students use cursive handwriting for consistency, especially if youare utilizing these words as part of your weekly spelling list. The Bonus Activity in each lesson usually sug-gests that the students write the words in cursive.

SSSS tttt eeee pppp ssss tttt oooo WWWW oooo rrrr dddd WWWW aaaa llll llll PPPP rrrr aaaa cccc tttt iiii cccc eeee !!!! Teach and reinforce the words on your Word Wall by using these visual, auditory and kinesthetic steps.

    1. Instruct all students to look at the first word on the wall. 2. Read and spell the word aloud.3. Have students read and spell the word in unison.4. Write the word on the class board emphasizing correct form. Read and spell the word as you write it.5. Instruct students to write the word, using correct form, on their Word Wall Practice Sheet. 6. Repeat all five steps for each word.7. Following your lead, ask students to check each word for spelling and proper form by drawing around the shape of each word.

Each day, repeat all steps using the same words. At the end of the each week, practice and review previouslystudied words from the Word Wall lessons. The next week, begin a new lesson with new words and follow thesame procedures.

Here is a simple lesson plan for using both your classroom Word Wall and the Word Wall PracticeWorksheets and Word Cards contained in this book.

Monday Word Wall Practice Specific Introduction of New WordsTuesday Word Wall Practice Student Word Cards from the Word Wall Practice BookWednesday Word Wall Practice Practice Worksheet, first pageThursday Word Wall Practice Practice Worksheet, second pageFriday Word Wall Review Give your own spelling test (include review words)

Spell Check! On the bottom of the first page of each lesson, you will notice a directive labeled Spell whichdirects students to “turn the page over and write the words from the word box from memory.”This will help students acquire visualization skills needed to recognize words and improve spelling. Please remind students that if they become stumped on a word, they can always refer to the class-room Word Wall. Instruct students to immediately check their spelling of the words. If they find amisspelled word, direct them to write that word correctly three additional times. This is especiallyimportant so students do not continue to practice a misspelled word.
