Standardisation and validation of cellular in vitro testing as support for the diagnosis of allergy

Allergy may be difficult to diagnose and skin tests are not always sufficient for confirmation.

In vitro cellular tests have been shown as an efficient alternative for several years. During the last decade the flow cytometric Basophil Activation Test (BAT) has been developed as a new, quantitative more precise method. The test has been well documented and few ready to use tools have been developed. The lymphocyte activation test for drug allergy will also be discussed.

Inter laboratory and intersystem reproducibility of the tests needs to be established, and they have to be validated for clinical utility.

This meeting aims to bring together academic biologists, clinicians and industrial scientists involved in flow cytometry in allergy to mature these tests for use in routine healthcare.
