AWARDS & PRIZESDRONACHARYA AWARD FOR 2012

The names of six sporting coaches wererecommended for the Dronacharya Awardsfor the year 2012. Wrestling coach YashvirSingh, Boxing Coach BI Fernandez, Athlet-ics Coach Virender Poonia, Kabaddi CoachSunil Davas, Parathletics Coach Dr.Satyapaul and Hockey Coach Harinder Singhare the six coaches who have been selectedfor the coveted award, given to the coach ofdifferent sports, for their excellent contribu-tion to the sports.

Boxing Coach BI Fernandez, who is aCuban national, became the first foreigncoach to be recommended for theDronacharya Award. Fernandez has been in-strumental in India’s impressive perfor-mances in Boxing in the international tour-naments.

The Dronacharya Awards committeewas headed by former Indian hockey captainAslam Sher Khan. The other members in-clude Rajkumar Sangwan (boxing), DhanrajPillai (hockey), Shiny Wilson (athletics),Morad Ali Khan (shooting), KarnamMalleswari (weightlifting), Bahadur Singh(athlet ics), Bhupender Dhawan(powerlifting,G S Sandhu (boxing),Ramphan Mann(wrestling,Prem ChandDegra (body building).

MAGSAYSAY AWARDS 2012Indian social activist Kulandei Francis,

age sixty six will be felicitated with theMagsaysay Award. In the year 1979, Francisbegun with his organisation, Integrated Vil-lage Development Project (IVDP) inKrishnagiri, wherein he initially started withsmall projects, amongst his achievements, hehas conducted night schools in the light ofgas lamps, set up first aid centres. Then, withthe help of development organizations, heundertook a micro-watershed programmethat, over twenty-two years, built three thirtyone mostly small check dams benefittingcultivators and their families in sixty villages.His organisation, the Integrated Village De-velopment Project also provides training torural students a in enhancing their skillsnamely training in rural sanitation, accoun-tancy, management, giving educational assis-tance for students in high schools, scholar-ships and also computer skills. The vision-ary Mr. Francis was also successful in pur-suing the holistic economic empowerment ofthousands of women and their families. TheBoard of Trustees of the Ramon MagsaysayAward Foundation (RMAF) announced therecipients of this year, 2012 Asia’s premierprize, the Ramon Magsaysay Award on 25July 2012.

The six individuals chosen from aroundthe globe are from countries, Bangladesh,Cambodia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines,and Taiwan. The other people chosen for theprizes, announced by the Ramon Magsaysay

Magsaysay Award winners receive acertificate, a medallion bearing the likenessof the late President, and a cash prize. Theywill be formally felicitated with theMagsaysay Award during the PresentationCeremonies which is to be held on 31 Au-gust 2012 at the Philippine International Con-vention Center (PICC) in Manila. In the past,many Indians have won the Magsaysayaward. In the year 1958, awardee was VinobaBhave, in the year 1959 C.D Deshmukh,again in the year 1994, it was awarded toKiran Bedi, in 1996, T.N seshan , in the year2003, James Michael Lyngdoh,in the year1965 Jayaprakash Narayan, In 1974 M.S.Subbulakshmi was awarded, in 1982Manibhai Desaiwas awarded. Ramón delFierro Magsaysay was the seventh Presidentof the Republic of the Philippines, he servedfrom 30 December 1953 until his death in a1957 aircraft disaster. The Ramon MagsaysayAward known as Asia’s Nobel Prize was es-tablished in April 1957 by the trustees of theRockefeller Brothers.

SARASWATI SAMMAN 2011The K K Birla Foundation announced

on 22 March 2012 its decision to honourTamil writer A A Manavalan with theSaraswati Samman 2011 for his book onRamayana. Retired professor and head of thedepartment of Tamil in Madras University,Manavalan is be bestowed with the 21stSaraswati Samman for his work IramaKathaiyum Iramayakalum (Ramakatha andRamayanas) published in 2005. Special ar-eas of interest of Manavalan who is a scholarin Tamil, English, Hindi and Telugu are trans-lation and comparative literature. He wastrained in these areas by professors HenryH.H. Remak and Ulrich Weisston in the Uni-versity of Indiana in Bloomington, UnitedStates.

The award-winning book, IramaKathaiyum Iramayakalum is a comparativestudy of 48 Ramayanas in the languages ofPali, Sanskrit, Prakrit, Tibetan, Tamil, OldJavenese, Japanese, Telugu, Assamese, Thaiand Kashmiri. The Saraswati Samman car-ries award money of Rs 7.5 lakh, a citationand a plaque.The prestigious award was in-stituted by the K K Birla Foundation in 1991.The award is conferred upon every year foran outstanding literary work written in anyIndian language mentioned in Schedule VIIIto the Constitution of India by an Indian citi-zen and published in the last ten years. Theaward carries a prize money of Rs 750000, acitation and a plaque. The selection for theSaraswati Samman is made by a high-level

The K.K. Birla Foundation has awardedthe 21st Bihari Puraskar for 2011 to ArjundeoCharan for his Rajasthani poetry collection “Ghar Tau Ek Nam Hai Bhrosai Rau “. Theaward carries prize money of Rs.1 lakh, acitation and a plaque.The award, installed inthe name of the famous Hindi poet Bihari, isgiven only to Rajasthani writers.Dr. Charanwas born in 1954 in Jodhpur district. An out-standing poet, critic, playwright, and trans-lator, the central theme of Dr. Charan’s po-ems is the poor condition and constantstruggles faced by women in a stridently feu-dal society. Dr. Charan is a Sahitya Akademiaward winner and is presently the Head ofthe Rajasthani Language Department atJayanarayan University, Jodhpur. His workshave been translated into a number of Indianlanguages.The “ Ghar Tau… “ anthologyexplores life’s ironies, changing values, andcontinuing contradictions in Indian socialstructures.

54TH ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS

The 54th Annual Grammy Awards wereheld on 12 February 2012, at the Staples Cen-ter in Los Angeles. The death of pop divaWhitney Houston the night before theGrammy awards however cast a sombremood at the awards. The producers quicklyplanned a tribute to her in the form of a per-formance by Jennifer Hudson. Paul

McCartney received the MusiCares Personof the Year award on 10 February 2012, atthe Los Angeles Convention Center. Britishsinger Adele, with six nominations, won allsix awards, tying Beyoncé’s record for mostwins by a female artist in one night. FooFighters and Kanye West followed with fiveand four awards, respectively. The Britishsongstress, Adele swept the awards winninga staggering six golden gramophones for herAlbum, 21. Adele, who was named best newartist in 2009, is only the second artist in his-tory to take all four major Grammy catego-ries. Christopher Cross attained the feat in1981 with a four-award sweep. Kanye Westwas the top nominee with seven nods. How-ever West once again had to satisfy himselfwith rap wins. West captured four awards toadd to his 14 previous wins, for best rap/sungcollaboration and best rap song (for All ofthe Lights), best rap performance (for Otis,shared with Jay-Z) and best rap album (MyBeautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy).

21ST VYAS SAMMAN

Noted Hindi writer ProfessorRamdarash Mishra was selected for the 21stVyas Samman for his poetry collection AamKe Patte published in 2004. A selection com-mittee headed by Suryaprasad Dixit, a well-known writer and former chairperson ofLucknow University’s Hindi department, se-lected the collection for the award. The prizemoney for Vyas Samman is Rs 2.5 lakh.

Professor Mishra, a veteran writer, wasborn on 15 August 1924, in Uttar Pradesh’sGorakhpur district. He served in DelhiUniversity’s Hindi department and retired asprofessor there. His published works include16 collections of poetry, 13 novels and 18short story collections. His notable poetrycollections include Pak gai hai dhoop, Pathke Geet, Kandhe par Suraj and Barish meinbheegte bache. His novels- Jal Tootata Huaand Paani ke Prachir received with criticalacclaim. The award, instituted by the K.K.

Birla Foundation, is given annually for anoutstanding literary work in Hindi publishedduring the past 10 years. The award carries acash purse of Rs. 2.5 lakh. After the SaraswatiSamman, which is given for a work chosenfrom among works in all leading Indian lan-guages, the Vyas Samman is the most presti-gious award given by the Foundation.

GREEN GLOBE AWARD

Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchanreceived a Green Globe for Outstanding Ef-forts by a Celebrity for his efforts toward agreener future at the fourth edition of thePanasonic Green Globe Foundation Awardson 2 february 2012. He received the awardfrom Hollywood actor and former Governorof California Arnold Schwarzenegger. Theaward is conferred to honour the efforts oforganisations and individuals fighting climatechange through their work in environmentpreservation and regeneration.

The Terminator star, Schwarzeneggerwas the guest of honour at the event.

G.D. BIRLA AWARD

Tapas Kumar Kundu of Bangalore-based Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for AdvancedScientific Research has been selected for theG.D. Birla award for his contribution in bio-chemistry. The award, instituted by the K.K.Birla Foundation for according recognitionto high calibre scientific research undertakenby Indian scientists below the age of 50, car-ries a purse of Rs 1.5 lakh. Mr. Kundu, whohas one US and three Indian patents to his

NORMAN BORLAUG AWARD

Aditi Mukherjee, a Delhi based scientist, wonthe prestigious Norman Borlaug Award in FieldResearch and Application. Mukherjee was picked forthe award for her work in transforming access to waterfor thousands of farmers in West Bengal. The awardwill be formally presented to Mukherji on 17 October2012 in Des Moines, Iowa, US. Mukherji, 37, is asenior researcher at the Delhi office of the InternationalWater Management Institute (IWMI). As alumnus ofPresidency College (Kolkata), JNU (Delhi), shecompleted her PhD at the University of Cambridge.The international award is conferred by the WorldFood Prize Foundation, which was started by NormanBorlogue, the father of Green Revolution in India. Theaward carries 10000 dollar cash prize. The BorlaugAward is restricted to scientists under 40.

SHRAM AWARDS FOR YEAR 2011Union Ministry of Labour and Employ-

ment announced the Prime Minister ShramAwards for year 2011 on 15 August 2012.This year, no nomination was found suitablefor the presitigious Shram Ratna Award. Six

nominations for the Shram Bhushan Award,Thirty Three nominations for Shram Vir/Shram Veerangana and twenty nine nomina-tions for Shram Shree/Shram Devi Awardshave been selected. Even though, the totalnumber of Shram Awards is 33, the numberof workers receiving the Awards is 68 (In-cluding six women), as some of the Awardshave been shared by workers and/or teamsof workers consisting of more than oneworker. These include 52 workers from thepublic sector and 16 workers from the pri-vate sector. Shram Bhushan awards carry acash prize of 1 lakh rupees and a Sanad.Shram Veer/Veerangana awards carry a cashprize of 60000 rupees and a Sanad. ShramShree/Devi Awards comprise of a cash prizeof 40000 rupees and a Sanad. Shram Awardswere set up by the Government of India in1985 to recognize the outstanding contribu-tions of workers in different fields.

WORLD SAND SCULPTURE CHAMPIONSHIP 2012Indian Sand Artist Sudarshan Pattnaik

won People’s Choice Gold Medal Award inMoscow. It was the Second World SandSculpture Championship. The theme ofWorld Sand Sculpture Championship 2012was World Cinema. Artist from elevencountries took part in this championship. Itincludes following Countries: India, Spain,Ireland, Germany, the United States, Russia,United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, Holland andCzech Republic. He sculpted the copy of theface of The Showman of the Millennium RajKapoor. His interpretation of Raj Kapoor was

World Sand Sculpture Championship: Inthis Championship artists have to makesculptures with the help of sand and Water.Judges provide them the required amount ofarea and artist has to make their sculpturewithin those parameters only. There is noflexible time to work and artists have to as-sign the title sign before making any sculp-ture. He also won two gold medals and atrophy in Solo International Sand Sculpturecontest 2012. Sudarshan Pattnaik belongs tothe Odisha State.

ONDAATJE PRIZE 2012Rahul Bhattacharya, the Delhi-based

author, on 29 May 2012 won the prestigiousOndaatje Prize 2012 for his book The SlyCompany of People Who Care.

He is the first Indian author to have re-ceived the award. Bhattacharya was also con-ferred with the Hindu Literary Prize for BestFiction, 2011 for the same book. The 10000pounds award is conferred by the Royal So-ciety of Literature every year to recognize awork of fiction, non-fiction or poetry whichevokes the spirit of a place. The award is pre-

sented to the author who is a citizen of orwho has been resident in the Commonwealthor Ireland. The other authors whose workwere shortlisted for the prize include JuliaBlackburn’s ‘Thin Paths’, Teju Cole’s ‘OpenCity’, Paul Farley and Michael SymmonsRoberts’ ‘Edgelands’, Olivia Laing’s ‘To theRiver’ and Tim Robinson’s ‘Connemara’.

6TH NTR NATIONAL LITERARY AWARD

Noted Tamil writer Ashokamitran,known for his novel Thanneer and otherworks was declared the recipient of the 6th

NTR National Literary Award on 4 May2012. The award was presented on 28 May2012. The writer was born in Secunderabadand was closest to Telugu culture, languageand people. The announcement was made bychairperson of NTR Vignan Trust NandamuriLakshmi Parvati who recalled how the awardwas established and began with Kannadawriter S.L. Bhyrappa, A. Somasundaram(Telugu), Sachidanandan (Malayalam),Mahasweta Devi and Gnanpith awardee C.Narayana Reddy. The jury comprised writerVolga, Professor N. Krupanandam of theUniversity of Hyderabad and litterateur KetuVishwanatha Reddy. Ashokamitran’s namewas finalised unanimously, considering thenumber of his works that were translated inother languages and their relevance to Telugu.
