Beyond the Classroom

THIS IS OHIO STATE

Many undergraduate students at Ohio State are involved in research outside of their normal course work. More than 700 young scholars from nearly every college and department on campus shared their research at the 2014 Denman Undergraduate Research Forum, one of the largest events of its kind in the country.

THIS IS OHIO STATE

A Wall Street Journal survey of corporate recruiters ranked Ohio State 12th in the nation among the country’s most highly sought-after graduates.

Nathaniel Swigger, Ph.D., Assistant Professor Department of Political Science

“Reality matters.” That is Dr. Nathaniel Swigger’s message to his students. While most tend to believe political science is about opinions and beliefs, the professor encourages students to understand how the world works both in his classroom and through their own research.

A former undergraduate at a small liberal arts school and graduate of a Big Ten university, Swigger endorses the Ohio State Newark experience. He joined the Ohio State Newark faculty in 2009 after completing a bachelor’s degree in history at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas and a doctoral degree in political science at the University of Illinois.

His course load includes an honors section of “Introduction to American Politics” and “Voters in Elections,” however, Swigger’s favorite class is “Campaign Politics,” an upper division seminar class that focuses on campaign strategies and the dynamics of voter-candidate interactions. It is in this class that students get to discover their interests and design research for themselves. “One of the most rewarding parts of this job has been helping students start their own research agendas,” he said.

For his own research, Swigger is currently partnering with a local domestic violence shelter in a project that is part community outreach, part study. The goal is to educate adolescents on how to build healthy romantic

relationships through the implementation of educational programming in local high schools. The researchers hope to discover how adolescents develop relationships, identify their notions of safe and unsafe behavior, and ascertain how best to intervene.

Swigger’s interest in domestic violence stems from prior work on gender norms and political messages in entertainment. Even apolitical programming carries messages about community standards, relationships, and what is and isn’t “normal” in American life. Swigger has studied the effect of social media usage on such values and, more recently, how situational comedies send messages about sexual behavior and responsibility, which may

influence attitudes on abortion, access to contraception, and a host of issues related to sexuality.

Even with a full course load and continual research, Swigger is committed to helping students maximize their time on the Newark campus. “Professors at this campus will learn your name. Take advantage of this rapport – meet with your professors and talk to them,” is his advice.

“College is unique to each student,” said Swigger. “In this short time you will be afforded new opportunities to learn and to create both individually and with other people. Revel in those opportunities.”
