Stewardship

The increasing violence in our country and

the hate that has become commonplace in so

many ways in our modern society is a con-

cern to all of us. While we trust in God and

his mercy and goodness, we recognize that

we live in a sinful and increasingly evil

world. Recognizing those truths and trying

to be faithful to our calling, we have decided

to secure our parish buildings during the day.

From now on, please realize that the doors to

our center will be locked during regular working hours, meaning

that those doing business will need to ring the bell and be patient

for us to answer the door to provide admittance to our facilities.

This change needs to be respected and imitated by all those who

use our parish Center. If you have a group function, please see

that someone is available to answer the door for latecomers, or

have a number that people can call for admission to the building.

The propping open of the doors of our buildings to accommodate

late comers put everyone at risk in our modern times. Please be

considerate of your own safety, that of others, and most especially

of our younger parishioners by NEVER propping open a door and

leaving it unattended for a group or individual. Continued disre-

gard of this policy will require the suspension or elimination of

privileges of a parish group for use of the Parish Center. Thank

you for your cooperation in this important matter for all of us.

For those who desire to be able to pray in the presence of the

Blessed Sacrament during the day, the lower church will continue

to be open for morning Mass and afterwards during the day until

the conclusion of evening activities. People are also welcome to

come to the Parish Center and use the Saint Joseph Chapel there

for private prayer during the day also.

1st Reading Old Testament : Daniel 12:1-3 (158B) 2nd Reading New Testament: Hebrews 10:11-14, 18 Gospel: Mark 13:24-32 Our meditation: “And then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.” MARK 13:26 Our response: We will all have that day when we are standing before God and our life is played out like a movie. When this happens and God asks each of us, “What have you done with the gifts that I have given you?” How will you respond?

.Tell Me, “Why … ?” Why does each country have Our Lady as a pa-

troness?

Many countries have individual saints that are in-

digenous to their land, or part of their history or

culture, or worked at evangelizing them as a patron

saint. It is easy to recognize Saint Patrick for Ire-

land, and Saint Francis of Assisi as a patron for Ita-

ly since they are both famous and popular, not only

with the people of these lands, but to the larger

Church as well.

As the mother of our Savior, Our Lady is also

identified as a patron for each country, usually un-

der a title that is assigned or selected by the people

or the Pope. Pope Pius IX assigned the title of Our

Lady of the Immaculate Conception as the patron to

the USA since he had recently proclaimed that dog-

ma as an infallible teaching. Our Lady of Guada-

lupe is an obvious choice for Mexico, the land

where the apparition occurred as well as that she is

designated as patroness for all of the Americas.

This week is the observance of the feast of Our

Lady of Providence. A tender image of Our Lady

with this title was brought by the bishop assigned to

Puerto Rico in the late 19th century who promoted

the devotion and spread its popularity. Eventually

an altar was created in the cathedral in the capital of

San Juan and an image enshrined there. It shows

the Child Jesus asleep as he rests on the lap of his

mother while she lifts his hand and caresses it be-

tween both of hers.

This original feast was observed on January 2nd,

the anniversary of the date that the original image

arrived in Puerto Rico, but Pope Pius XI transferred

it to November 19th in 1920 to commemorate the

anniversary of the European discovery of the island

by Columbus in 1493. This image of Our Lady of

Providence is in the oval of our bulletin cover this

week. It is a reminder of the maternal care that the

mother of our Savior provides for us. Whether it is

Fatima, Aparecida, Knock, Czestochowa, Las

Nubes, or Providence, we all turn to Our Lady un-

der these different titles to be assured of her prayers

and the protection of our loving and merciful God.

A Message from Father Peter Dear Parishioners,

This week our country invites us to pause, gather with family and

friends, and give thanks to God for the blessings that are part of our

everyday life. While the origin of this holiday is not far from our

town, it took several generations for it to be established as a part of

our American culture and way of life. And while many people see

the holiday as the start to the Christmas rush and the day before the

big sales in stores, it is a holiday with its own traditions and

privileges earned through the centuries. In an age when we can not

pray in public places or make displays on public land on religious

themes such as the Ten Commandments or a Christmas creche, that

we have a national holiday for giving thanks to God should be over

looked or rushed without some attention and appreciation to this

great opportunity. It is worth noting that when deciding on the day

for the celebration, the President chose Thursday because it would

not interfere or favor anyone religion over another: a choice for

Friday, Saturday or Sunday would have played favorites, but no one

marks Thursday as a day of weekly worship.

It is worth remembering that the original Pilgrims had faced a

harsh and bitter winter, a climate terribly foreign to them and crops

and a growing season alien from their homeland. Added to that they

had lost more than half of their original number through difficult

illnesses and heartbreaking deaths. Still in the midst of this

uncertainty and tragedy they found reason to give thanks. Because

for all that they lacked, they had come in search of religious

freedom and they had found and enjoyed that with abundance. For

all that they didn’t have, the one gift they cherished most of all was

the one that brought them to these shores, the ability to worship as

they chose and live by those values every day without oppression or

discrimination.

Our times are so very different from these. We live with a bounty

they could never have imagined from the food that stocks our

markets to the advances of technology that provide comfort, travel

and information beyond their wildest dreams. For all that we have,

we often overlook that great gift that caused them to abandon their

own safety and comfort to come to a foreign and unknown land, to

know the freedom to worship as they believed. This holiday was

their feast for all that they were lacking to acknowledge the great

gift that they enjoyed most of all.

So, while we fight the traffic for family gatherings either near or

far, while we feast of foods that these original observers never knew

or imagined of, while we entertain ourselves with football contests

either local or national, let us not forget or ignore the origin of this

holiday and its importance for generations before us. To pause in

the routine of our lives and recognize in a tough and unsafe world,

one in which a terrorist could be at any corner of our society, that we

have much to be grateful for, much that we enjoy as our bounty

from the generosity of our God. Giving thanks is an important part

of our Judeo-Christian tradition. Let us give thanks, let us reach out

in the coming weeks to share of our bounty, that others might know

the blessings that we do and make our country closer to the

Kingdom of God that Jesus preached and closer to the ideal that

brought the first Pilgrims to this very land.

Wreaths Across America Knights of Columbus Valencia Council 80 will be collecting dona-tions for “Wreaths Across Ameri-ca” after all the Masses next weekend November 17th and 18th,

2018. These wreaths along with wreaths from other organiza-tions will be placed on veteran’s graves at the Bourne and Agawam National Cemeteries during the 2018 National Remembrance Ceremony to be held on December 15, 2018. Your generosity last year made it possible for our council to contribute 93 wreaths for this event. Your continued support will be greatly appreciated.

de inverno é alta este ano. Se você tem um casaco para jovens ou adultos, por favor, nos ajude fazendo sua doação. As doações são aceitas na frente da Igreja nos fins de semana de 10 a 11 de Novembro e de 17 a 18 de Novembro ou no dia do evento, 24 de Novembro das 9:00am às 11:30am. PARA NIÑOS: Los padres y padrinos de niños menores de 4 años

de edad necesitan participar en una charla de orientación de sus

responsabilidades a pedir un bautismo. Por favor llamar a la ofi-

cina para confirmar la fecha. Niños de 4 a 8 años de edad necesi-

tan una charla especial para entender su experiencia de ser bauti-

zado.

JOVENES Y ADULTOS: La preparación es a través del proceso del

Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de adultos (RICA). Cada situación es

distinta, favor de llamar a la oficina.

MINISTERIO A LOS ENFERMOS:

EN CASA: Hay ministros disponible para visitar nuestros parro-

quianos en sus hogares. Favor de llamar a la oficina.

EN HOSPITAL: Hay ministros que llevan la comunión a nuestro

hospital local de Milford durante la semana.

UNCIÓN: Favor de llamar a la oficina o hablar con el sacerdote

para arreglar un tiempo para recibir el sacramento.

MATRIMONIOS

Las parejas que planifiquen celebrar el sacramento del matrimo-

nio por la Iglesia Católica, por favor de llamar a la oficina por lo

menos de un año antes de la fecha establecida de la boda.

Virgem Santíssima, Mãe do Amor, que nunca desampara as mães que suplicam vossa misericordiosa intercessão. Quando estavas junto de Jesus crucificado,

que agonizava as dores atrozes dos pecados da humanidade, sentistes tuas vestes serem banhadas com as lágrimas de todas as mães, que, silenciosamente, também choram por seus filhos amados. Senhora das Dores, que conheces tão bem o meu coração e de todas as mães do mundo inteiro, que dia e noite suplicam por seus filhos, acolhei em suas mãos puríssimas e ternas as minhas intenções (apresente a Nossa Senhora as intenções pelos seus filhos). Eu confio que a Senhora nunca irá me desamparar, e pelos meus filhos irá interceder junto a Jesus Cristo, seu amado Filho, que por amor entregou Sua própria vida para que nós, por Seu amor doado, derramando Seu Sangue misericordioso, pudéssemos ser salvos. Mãe das Dores e da Esperança, Senhora da Felicidade e da Paz, acolhei em teu Imaculado e Sagrado Coração os meus filhos (diga o nome de cada um de seus filhos). Eu confio em tua intercessão maternal, pois és também minha Mãe e conhece minhas angústias e tristezas, feridas e medos.
