TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Wisdom is easily discerned by those who love her (Wisdom 6:12-16). Psalm — My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God (Psalm 63). Second Reading — Since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 [13-14]). Gospel — Stay awake! You know neither the day nor the hour (Matthew 25:1-13).

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” Christ cautions us often concerning our sense of conversion and timing. It has a lot to do with procrastination — that is, putting something off or delaying something which needs to be accomplished.

Most of us understand the im-portance of living up to Christ’s expectations and living life in a way to which He has called us. In other words, we comprehend that we need to be His disciples, but we seem to find excuses and reasons not to totally commit to that. That is exactly the issue Jesus is addressing in today’s Gospel from St. Matthew, which is essentially the Parable of the Ten Virgins. Are we truly prepared for the return of Christ, the Second Coming? In a sense it has everything to do with death. We may not wish to think about it but we do know that death is inevitable, and have we done everything we need to do to be prepared?

It was St. Augustine of Hippo who said, “God has promised forgiveness to your repentance, but He has not promised tomorrow to your procrastination.” Like the Virgins in the parable, we cannot wait. Now, this very moment, is the time for us to do what God has called us to do, and that is live lives of stewardship in service and love to others. There are indeed no promises about tomorrow, but Christ has offered us hope for eternal life. Have we done everything we need to do to be ready?

Each year Catholic Charities sponsors the Matthew 25 Award Mass and Banquet. This annual event links the mission of Catholic Charities with the great work being done at local parishes. At the same time, it raises needed funds for Catholic Charities allowing them to continue their charitable work. Each year St. James has the opportunity to recognize a member of the parish who exemplifies the Gospel Message of Matthew 25. This year our St. James-St. Leo Parish nominates Jan Nelte as the recipient of this honorable award. For many years, Jan has handled the communications for St. James Mission Circle — a charity devoted to helping people in need. Jan writes the newsletters, flyers, donation letters, and helps put out the e-blasts. She takes the pictures at all the Mission Circle events, does the photo boards, produces their website, Facebook page, and creates videos for their fundraisers. Jan also helps with all the charity’s events — like the Christmas Party at the girls’ home Mission Circle supports in Tijuana. She organizes an outing for the kids in the fall and helps stage a fashion show at the home in the spring. Locally, she helps promote dinners for the homeless and a shoe distribution for 1300 needy kids in Oceanside.

“It may be considered old-fashioned and overly pious by some, but my experience has been that wherever you find Eucharistic Adoration in a parish, those communities are more vibrant. The people are more spiritually focused, more involved, more generous with God, and the communities tend to be thriving.” - Matthew Kelly from the book “Rediscover Catholicism

THE GAP It’s interesting that there is such a huge gap

between advice and help. —Anonymous

Stock Donations A gift of your securities, including stocks or mutual funds, is an easy way to make a gift. By making a gift of your appreciated securities, you can avoid paying capital gains tax that would otherwise be due if you sold these assets. Contributions are deductible for tax purposes. There are no transaction fees or other costs and the full value of the sold securities benefits the parish, school or other Catholic charity you select.

More importantly, the question you may want to consider is this: Have I been blessed with many gifts and am I inspired by Gospel teaching and my Catholic values that charitable giving is a profound and joy-inspiring expression of love and gratitude? How can I live out my Catholic values and put them into action for the greater good of the community? Your stock contribution will help you live out your Catholic values and benefit your parish or school at the same time.

For more information on making a gift please visit our diocesan website at www.sdcatholic.org and click on Giving – Stock Donations at the top of the website. Or, you may contact the Office for Stewardship, Manny Aguilar, at 858-490-8294 or call Merrill Lynch, the Diocese’s broker, at 800-844-0720.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org

St. James pews installed in a new church in Tijuana. They are very appreciative.

This is just one of the many churches that will be using the pews.

The next one will be dedicated on December 17th.

St. James Old Pews TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We had sixteen hundred years’ experience with one Eucharistic Prayer in our repertoire, and the liturgical reforms of the Council of Trent shaped the way we worshiped for four hundred years. In the last years of the Tridentine Mass, the early 1960s, we tended to see children as miniature adults. Fully rooted in the Sunday assembly by the decision of Pope Saint Pius X to push Communion back to the age of seven or so from the standard age of twelve to fourteen years during the early 1900s, children were still more tolerated than acknowledged. The Mass was in Latin, and by the 1960s the people had begun to regain their voices in the “dialogue Mass,” so the focus was on training little children to recite or sing in Latin. The new attention to the experience of children, their ability to enter into ritual, their spontaneity, their ability to grasp key concepts in faith, felt “untraditional.” Yet we can trace in our tradition the ways in which children have long been given a special place in the assembly. From earliest times, boys have served in choirs and certain ministries in monasteries and in parish churches. Girls were sometimes entrusted to nuns, learning liturgical chants and the arts. Yet, in our day, the formation of a Lectionary for children and Eucharistic Prayers suited to them are truly tremendous breakthroughs in our treasury of prayer. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S.
