ATTENTION: CHOIR MEMBERS A new class at the Holy Name Conservatory of Music is available for members of the choir and those who wish to join the choir. This class meets on Tuesdays in the Pastoral Center (former Convent) from 5:30-6:30 pm with Bay Area vocalist and HN Conservatory faculty Shan-non Wolfe, who holds a Master of Music degree from the San Francis-co Conservatory of Music in opera and chamber music performance. The class is open to both men and women and focuses on improving tone quality, range, sight-reading, ear-training and overall musician-ship. Music is a central component to the services and Masses at Holy Name and our aim is to produce a happy and robust choir so that we may celebrate and worship with both our hearts and voices to our best ability. This hour-long class includes smaller break-out sessions so that you will receive individual one-on-one attention. Come for the whole class to watch, learn and participate. Registration is a must. Please call Jackie at the Pastoral Center if interested at (415) 664-8590. Classes are ongoing every Tuesday. Cost is $20 per person.

COLLECTION FOR THE ARCHDIOCESE FOR THE MILITARY SERVICES

Last year, the USCCB (United States Conference of Catho-lic Bishops)approved a new national collection to support the Archdio-cese for the Military Services responsible for supplying priests to serve as chaplains in the U.S. military. This collection which occurs every three years and will be taken up in parishes this year on Nov. 9/10 offers each of us a substantial way to “serve those who serve.” Funds raised will help the Archdiocese and its endorsed priests bring the Church’s full range of pastoral services to the men and women in uniform as well as their families and patients in the VA Medical Centers. It will support religious education, priestly formation of new chaplains, and financial planning to meet the challenges of shepherding a global Archdiocese. The Archdiocese receives no government funding. About 250 Catholic chaplains now serve on active duty. They minister to Catholics in the armed forces and the nation’s military academies. Another 250 Catholic chaplains specifically serve patients in the nation’s 153 Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers. All told, 1.8 million Catholics and their families depend on these approximately 500 priest-chaplains for spiritual sustenance. Funding the Mission of the AMS Depends on You . . . the AMS owns no parishes or schools or physical buildings besides the chancery seat of the Archdiocese in Washington, DC. The archdiocese depends solely on generous donations from the general public, from current and retired priest-chaplains, and from private grants. Next weekend, please be generous in giving to the Archdiocese for the Military Services.

TODAY’S SECOND COLLECTION IS THE ACE COLLECTION FOR THE BENEFIT OUR PARISH SCHOOL.

Your generosity is always appreciated.

FAZtor ‘s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora Welcome to November! We enter the last two months of the year which obviously are busy months with lots of holidays and Holydays. The

closer we get to Christmas the busier we will be. But it’s fun! I thought I was already done for the day. I thought I have accomplished everything that busy Tuesday that I was happy and proud to get ready for bed few minutes before midnight. The one after the other schedule made me forget that it was the day to make my Bulletin column. I don’t blame my “senior moments.” My senior moments are every Thursday when I visit our Holy Name Senior Club playing Bingo, riding on a bus with them to places or partying with them at the Irish Cultural Cen-ter. These are my senior moments – my great ‘moments with the seniors’. After my talk for the parents of our Confirmation candi-dates that Tuesday evening, our School principal Mrs. Judy Cosmos said to me, “the meeting was good today.” I respond-ed, “which meeting?” She laughed because she knew I had a lot of meetings that day. But she was referring to our meeting at her office with her and a sports person. I blame my hectic schedule in the “Day of a Life of a Pastor.” That’s sounds like a good title for an article.

It surely reminds me of what Father McGinnn wrote entitled “The Perfect Pastor.” ....The Perfect Pastor preaches exactly 10 minutes. He condemns sin roundly, but never hurts anyone's feelings. He works from 8 a.m. until midnight, and is also the church janitor. ....The Perfect Pastor makes $40 a week, wears good clothes, drives a good car, buys good books, and donates $30 a week to the parish. He is 29 years old and has 40 years' worth of experience. Above all, he is handsome. ....The Perfect Pastor has a burning desire to work with teen-agers, and he spends most of his time with the senior citizens. He smiles all the time with a straight face because he has a sense of humor that keeps him se-riously dedicated to his parish. He makes 15 home visits a day and is always in his office to be handy when need-ed. ....The Perfect Pastor always has time for parish coun-cil and all of it's committees. He never misses the meet-ing of any parish organization, and is always busy evan-gelizing the unchurched. ....The Perfect Pastor is always in the next parish over! If your pastor does not measure up, simply send this notice to six other parishes that are tired of their pastor too. Then bundle up your pastor and send him to the parish at the top of your list. If everyone cooperates, in one week you will receive 1, 643 pastors. One of them should be perfect. Have faith in this letter. One parish broke the chain and got its' old pastor back in less than three months.

31st Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 19: 1-10

‘Hurry down, Zacchaeus!’ The woman appeared in the doorway and Zacchaeus frowned.

He wasn’t yet done with his breakfast, but he had much work to do, so taking the last of the bread he dabbed up the puddles of juice from the melon. “Clear it away,” he commanded.

The morning sun sent fingers of light between the columns and into the room. Zacchaeus rose from the table and strolled outside to fill his lungs with the fresh air. He passed between the tall stone col-umns which made him look even shorter. Squinting up, Zacchaeus made note of another clear blue sky and its promise of a beautiful day. Inside at his desk Zacchaeus would be unable to enjoy it. The tax accountings were due to the Roman authorities and his report was far from complete.

Zacchaeus returned to his desk and stared sadly at the thick rolls of unfinished tax reports. He sighed and unrolled the first, dipping his pen into the ink.

By early afternoon the quiet of his study and the increasing warmth of the day began to lull Zacchaeus to sleep. His eyes closed and his head nodded forward.

From far away he heard the excited voice of his wife calling to him. Suddenly her voice was in his ear. “Zacchaeus,” she shouted. “He’s here. Jesus of Nazareth is passing through.”

The tax collector swallowed hard and tried to pretend he had not been sleeping. “He’s here?” Zacchaeus stammered thickly.

They both ran from the house and down the walkway to the road that led into the central district of Jericho. Zacchaeus quickly outdistanced his wife and soon could hear the noise of the crowds lining the Bethany Road. There were so many people crowding the road that little Zacchaeus couldn’t see. He tried to squeeze in, but the townspeople smugly pressed themselves together to form an impene-trable wall for the hated little tax collector.

Zacchaeus growled and set out running far ahead of Jesus. Panting for air, he waited up ahead where the road passed under the shade of an old sycamore tree. Then a smirk flashed across Zacchae-us’ face. He’d get the best spot of all! He shinnied up the trunk of the tree to the first branch and straddling it worked his way out to a center spot over the road. Looking back down the road, Zacchaeus was hap-py to see that Jesus and his followers were coming straight for him.

“He’s so young,” Zacchaeus thought as he watched the famous miracle worker approach. When Jesus got closer he lifted his eyes toward the tree and saw Zacchaeus clinging there. A bolt of fear knifed into the tax collector as the eyes of Jesus locked with his own.

“Hurry down, Zacchaeus, because I must stay in your house today,” Jesus said.

Zacchaeus reeled, almost losing his grip on the support branch. He held on hard, stunned by the realization that “He knows my name!”

Principal's Message Dear Holy Name Families, The 2013 Fright Fest was a wonder-ful, fun filled day. I walked around the yard, in and out of Flanagan Center and the gym and saw so many of our parents involved in so many different ways. Although I can't thank

each of you personally, please know how much you are appreciat-ed. We all know that the Fright Fest is one of our major fundrais-ers, but most importantly it brings parents, children, friends and neighbors together to enjoy each other and have a good time. Of course, the day doesn't happen without some key players. Thank you to chairperson, Mrs. Cynthia Lee (Alanna 7A) and co-chairperson Mrs. Karen Mitguard (Saori 7B) for the months of planning that you put into this event. I'm sure Mrs. Lee will be tying things up for many more weeks. Mrs. Mariel Myers (Dean 2nd gd & Owen 5th gd) did a great job coordinating our booth chairs and their volunteers. Thank all of you. Thank you to Mr. Chris Cannizzaro (Anthony 1st gd) for donating, picking up and putting up the wonderful fall decorations in our main hall and around the gates of the schoolyard. Thank you also for bringing us the food trucks. They definitelyadded to the spirit of our festival. Thank you to Mrs. Jennifer LesCallett for donating hundreds of hotdogs and manning the booth with other parents all day long. The Haunted House was exceptionally scary this year thanks to Mr. Victor Hapin (Sophia 8A) and an incredible team of parents and exuberant 8th grade students. They worked until late Friday night and all day Saturday in order to excite and scare their visitors to the "tour of terror." Of course, everything had to be cleaned up and put back in place. Mr. Lester Gee (Samantha 2nd gd) had an incredible team working under his direction. Flanagan Center, the gym and the yard were put back in perfect shape by Sunday afternoon. Thank you, Mr.Gee and thank you to your clean up committee. The Canossian sisters won $500.00 in the raffle. Sister Esther Ling donated it back to Holy Name School to be used for scholarships. Thank you, Sister Esther. God bless you for your kindness. It was another great Fright Fest thanks to each and eve-ryone one of you. Our parents and children working and playing together are what make Holy Name a wonderful community. God bless you. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Every week, some treasures from our tradition are shared here. Where does all this history come from? The history of God’s people of prayer is always coming to light, mostly because scholars have dedicated their lives to research. They translate and ponder prayers and songs; explore the places used for worship; look at the vessels, books, and vestments; and read works from legal documents to letters and diaries. In the 1930s, Hitler’s rush to arm Germany closed seminaries as priests and seminarians alike were drafted into service. One professor, Father Josef Jungman, forced from his classroom, spent the war years in an Austrian library. His careful work disclosed much of what we know of the history of the Mass. His great work, The Mass of the Roman Rite, describes the evolution of Eucha-ristic celebration and inspired generations of scholars to explore a tradition surprisingly rich and varied. It was said of him that he had a command of the past that cast new light on the present, and opened up a clear direction to the future. His contributions to the Second Vati-can Council helped shape the way that we worship today. At the end of his life, in 1975, his studies completed, he told a friend that he was waiting patiently for the Lord’s knock at the door to take him to the heavenly banquet. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Zacchaeus was no ordinary tax collector, but the chief tax collector, and “a wealthy man.” But he wasn’t too proud to run ahead and clamber up into a sycamore tree just to get a glimpse of Jesus. Maybe, sinner though he was, he recognized in this wan-dering preacher the object of the Wisdom poet’s adoration. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
