Open My Mind to Understand One part of my morning prayer ritual is to pray the daily scripture readings. They are particularly joyful during the Easter season as you would expect. Unlike the rest of the liturgical year, the first reading is from the New Testament, not the Old Testament. The readings are from the Acts of the Apostles, which is thought to be the first book written in the New Testament. The readings follow from day to day. The early followers of Jesus share their stories of their experiences of the Risen Lord with them. We are given eye‐witness accounts of Jesus reassuring them (and us) of his ever‐loving presence with them (and us)!
During the Octave of Easter the Gospel in the daily readings are from all four evangelists. Each shares their experience of the Risen Lord. During most of the Easter season (until after Pentecost Sunday) the daily Gospel readings and almost all of the Sunday Gospel readings, especially in Cycle B, are from the Gospel of John. I have noticed that many of the daily scripture readings are read again in our Sunday readings. At first I wondered why they would be repeated and then it dawned on me. Because they are so important for us to hear! Most people do not hear or read the daily scripture readings.
The message in these readings is so powerful. We hear how the disciples were slow to recognize and even believe that they were experiencing the living Christ. Last Sunday we heard how Thomas did not believe that the rest of his group had been visited by the risen Christ. It wasn’t until Jesus appeared again and Thomas saw for himself and was invited by Jesus to touch his wounds.
This weekend’s Gospel begins saying “The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.” Jesus had been walking with them, talking with them and explaining scripture to them and they did not recognize him until he broke bread with them (the Emmaus story). Their hearts were opened and they quickly returned to tell the others the good news. Jesus appeared again to the group as the two were speaking of their experience. Jesus said, “Peace be with you.” They were startled and terrified. They had already seen the risen Lord once or twice but still did not understand what was happening to them!
Jesus lovingly spoke to them, assuring them that he truly had risen from the dead. He offered his crucified wounds as proof that it was really him. He even asked for something to eat to prove he was alive!
Jesus knew this was hard to accept, but he didn’t give up on them and he doesn’t give up on us. “Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures”. Just as Jesus opened the hearts of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, he opened the minds of the disciples to understand the scripture. Jesus does this for us too if we let him.
The scriptures can be confusing. It is important to ask the Holy Spirit to open our hearts and minds so we can understand what God wants us to hear. We also need to remember that we should not just read the scriptures, we must pray the scriptures.
I don’t remember things the first time I hear them. As a parent I can remember saying to my children,
“How many times do I have to tell you…?” We are so blest that we have a loving God who has inspired
those who arranged the liturgical readings to repeat them so that our minds may be opened to
understand.

NOT WHAT WAS EXPECTED Have you ever waited for something for so long you began to think it might never happen? Your graduation day, or the day of your marriage, or the birth of a child, perhaps. The Israelites had waited for centuries for the coming of the Messiah. Yet when Jesus, the long-awaited Anointed One came, many failed to believe in him. He wasn’t what they expected. The Messiah was supposed to be a strong, powerful commander of armies, not humble, compassionate, and suffering. After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples and explained all that he had said in his time with them, opening their minds to what had been written in the scriptures so that they could accept his suffering and death and rejoice in his resurrection.
