A QUOTE FROM POPE FRANCIS

Jesus on the cross feels the whole weight of the evil, and with the force of God's love he conquers it; he defeats it with his resurrec-

on. This is the good that Jesus does for us on the throne of the cross. Christ's cross, embraced with love, never leads to sadness, but to joy, to the joy of having been saved and of doing a li le of what he did on the day of his death.

― Pope Francis, The Church of Mercy

ASSISTED SUICIDE

Stop Assisted Suicide in CA before it’s too late! Earlier this year, through a Special Session, the CA legislature passed assisted suicide, allowing doctors to prescribe overdose medica on to terminally ill pa ents. Join a coa-li on of physicians, nurses, disability-rights organiza ons, and people of all faiths to stand for the lives of our elder-ly and dying and oppose assisted suicide! This weekend, December 12 & 13, 2015, pe ons will be available for signature outside of Masses. Signers must be registered to vote and can only sign once.

Why Oppose Assisted Suicide? • Sends the Wrong Message: Legalizing suicide for the

terminally ill, while discouraging it for the rest of the popula on, teaches that the lives of the ill and disa-bled do not ma er to our society.

• Will Worsen Pa ent Care: Pa ents in other states, like Barbara Wagner in Oregon, are being denied treatment prescribed by their doctors, and instead offered drugs for assisted suicide.

• Will Increase Non-Terminal Suicide Rates: Suicides skyrocket when assisted suicide is legalized. Oregon's suicide rate for non-terminal people increased 49% a er assisted suicide became legal.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

In today’s Gospel we hear the prophet John the Bap st being asked a profound stewardship ques on: “What should we do?” Each group wants to know the appropri-ate response to John’s call; each reply points to how they should treat others. John does not simply say, “Be bap-

zed.” Rather, he points them to their jobs and personal rela onships. John’s message is simple: judgment is near, and repentance includes trea ng others well. We should be willing to share what we have with those in need. To listen to John the Bap st is to be called to account. Do I give only of my excess, or am I the good steward who is willing to sacrifice in order to help others?

CELEBRATE This Sunday, God rejoices and sings because of us. We read in Zephaniah today that God “will sing joyfully be-cause of you, / as one sings at fes vals” (Zephaniah 3:18). We know plenty about singing at fes vals. Already our ears are ringing with the songs and carols that an ci-pate the Christmas season. Paul reminds us of the source of our own double rejoic-ing: God is the mighty savior who is in our midst (in Zeph-aniah’s words). Because this is so, says Paul, we can re-joice and be at ease. We don’t have to worry, for God’s peace will stand guard over our hearts and minds. A medieval carol depicts Christmas as “my dancing day” and urges us to enter into the dance. Why all the merrymaking? Because “the Lord is near,” as Paul re-minds us (Philippians 4:5). He then points to another rea-son for the dancing: the dawn of the promise of peace, the peace beyond all understanding, that is now within our grasp.

SUICIDIO ASISTIDO

10 THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR THE POOR AT CHRISTMAS

There are many things you can do during the Ad-vent and Christmas seasons to assist efforts to alle-viate hunger in your community. Whether you vol-unteer individually, as a family or as part of a group or parish, the possibili es for serving the poor are almost limitless. Consider doing one or more of the 10 sugges ons below:

1. Pray for the poor, and ask God to transform your own a tudes about those in need, realiz-ing that all of us are poor in some way before God’s grace.

2. Add a pe on to your own family prayers asking that the members of the parish community open their hearts to the poor.

3. Collect food items for the food pantry in Social Concerns.

4. Volunteer to assist a pantry for a day of sor ng, bagging or distribu ng.

5. Buy fast food gi cer ficates to give out to peo-ple you see who need a meal or to those who request your aid on our downtown streets.

6. Collect fast food and other gi cer ficates to be handed out to those in need who stop by the parish.

7. Volunteer at your parish, or Brother Benno’s soup kitchen.

8. Fast for a meal this month and offer the money you would have spent to Social Concerns or Catholic Chari es for the poor.

9. Make your own generous financial gi to an or-ganiza on that serves the poor.

10. Think about ways to use your professional skills in a volunteer capacity at your chosen an -hunger organiza on. There are many programs, including Supplemental Nutri on Assistance Pro-gram (SNAP) screening and applica on assis-tance centers, food banks, and other an -hunger organiza ons, that can use your help to make sure that all eligible people have access to nutri on assistance and an -hunger programs.

You will find rich rewards in fulfilling these stew-ardships tasks. For Jesus said that whatever we do for one of the least of his brothers and sisters, we do it for him (see Ma hew 25:40).

(Mateo 25:40)
