READINGS OF THE DAY LECTURAS DEL DIA

CONVERSATION WITH GOD Prayer is our focus this weekend. In the Gospel, Jesus gives his disciples, and us, the Lord’s Prayer, which we have cherished through the centuries. The first two words encompass much about our faith—unity among all Christians (Our), and a sense that we are in a deeply bonded relationship with God (Father). In Genesis, we see Abraham in conversational prayer, in his creaturely humility before his Creator, seeking mercy and compassion for the innocent. The psalm is a lyrical prayer of thanksgiving and praise for the God who answered the sincere prayers of a people who had called out for help, showing them mercy. In Luke’s Gospel, the disciples want to pray like Jesus, with the same intimacy—to experience God as Abba in the depths of their being. Do we try to talk to God? Do we listen for answers? This relationship is always a work in progress.

UNA CONVERSACIÓN CON DIOS Este fin de semana ponemos nuestra atención en la oración. En el Evangelio, Jesús da a sus discípulos, y a nosotros, la oración del Padre Nuestro, que durante siglos hemos apreciado. Las dos primeras palabras abarcan mucho de nuestra fe: la unidad entre todos los cristianos (Nuestro), y un sentido de que estamos en una relación profundamente vinculada con Dios (Padre). En el libro de Génesis, vemos a Abraham en una oración de conversación, en su humildad de creatura ante su Creador, buscando misericordia y compasión por un inocente. El salmo es una oración poética de agradecimiento y alabanza al Dios que respondió a las oraciones sinceras de un pueblo que había pedido ayuda, mostrando su misericordia. En el Evangelio de Lucas, los discípulos quieren orar como Jesús, con la misma intimidad, para experimentar a Dios como Abba en lo más profundo de su ser. ¿Intentamos nosotros de hablar con Dios? ¿Escuchamos las respuestas? Dear grandparents, dear elderly persons, we are called to be artisans of the revolution of tenderness in our world! Let us do so by learning to make ever more frequent and better use of the most valuable in-strument at our disposal and, indeed, the one best suited to our age: prayer. “Let us too become, as it were, poets of prayer: let us develop a taste for finding our own words, let us once again take up those taught by the word of God”. Our trustful prayer can do a great deal: it can accompany the cry of pain of those who suffer, and it can help change hearts. We can be “the enduring ‘chorus’ of a great spiritual sanctuary, where prayers of supplication and songs of praise sustain the community that toils and struggles in the field of life”.7 The World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly is an opportunity to pro-claim once more, with joy, that the Church wants to celebrate together with all those whom the Lord – in the words of the Bible – has “filled with days.” - Pope Francis Queridos abuelos, queridos ancianos, estamos llamados a ser artífices de la revolución de la ternura en nuestro mundo. Hagámoslo aprendiendo a utilizar cada vez más y mejor el instrumento más vali-oso que tenemos a nuestra disposición y, de hecho, el más adecuado para nuestra edad: la oración. "Convirtámonos también nosotros, por así decirlo, en poetas de la oración: desarrollemos el gusto por encon-trar nuestras propias palabras, retomemos las enseñadas por la pala-bra de Dios". Nuestra oración confiada puede hacer mucho: puede acompañar el grito de dolor de los que sufren, y puede ayudar a cam-biar los corazones. Theology on Tap Returns to the Monterey Peninsula! Theology on Tap is back, after a two-year break during the COVID pandemic. The gatherings once again offer fellowship, along with discussions of theology, Church teachings, and social justice topics. The program is now sponsored by the Young Adult group at San Carlos Cathedral, but all are welcome. The location is not yet fixed, so meetings are at different locations until they can find a permanent home. For now, see the San Carlos bulletin for monthly locations, topics, and speakers.
