JOB DESCRIPTION: Therapeutic Recreation Assistant DEPARTMENT: Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor: Director of Therapeutic Recreation Approval Date: July 2011
SUMMARY Under the direction of the Director of Therapeutic Recreation, the Therapeutic Recreation Assistant assists in the development, organization, coordination and implementation of comprehensive therapeutic recreation services and programs that meet the needs and interests of each resident.
Essential Functions This summarizes the major essential duties and responsibilities regularly performed and assigned to this position
• Facilitates group programs as assigned in a timely and efficient manner. Complete required documentation. Contributes to resident care planning preparation. Provide individual programming as assigned. Assists with planning and leadership of special events. Adheres to universal precautions and sanitary safety and infection control policies and procedures.
• Attends and contribute to Therapeutic Recreation meetings. Maintains Recreation Therapy Department supplies and equipment. Works with volunteers as assigned by Recreation Therapy director.
• Attends orientation and in-services as required by the state. • Maintains records of participation in activities • Reports the following to the charge nurse or resident manager: Changes in
resident status, responses to activities, equipment and supply needs, safety hazards, unusual occurrences or observations and problems with completion of assignment.
• Submist calendar of planned activities for inclusion in monthly newsletter • Participates in care plans as directed • Participates in annual functions planned or sponsored by Therapeutic Recreation
Department • Serves as Assistant-on-call for weekend TR Assistants • Attends all in-service programs and scheduled meetings. Stays current with
Silverchair and other continuing education requirements as applicable to the Health Care Center and Assisted Living areas.
• Attendance must be regular and consistent.
Marginal Functions • Performs other duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as may be required
to meet emergency situations.

Qualifications • College graduate or equivalent with knowledge of the practical application of
recreation service programs. • Must meet state/federal regulations if applicable. • Must have the ability to read, write, and follow oral and written directions at a
level necessary to accomplish the job. • Must be able to relate positively and favorably to residents and families and to
work cooperatively with other associates and personnel of other community agencies at all levels.
• Must be capable of maintaining regular attendance. • Must meet all local health regulations, and pass post-employment physician exam,
if required. This requirement also includes criminal background investigation and reference inquiry.
• Must be capable of performing the Essential Job Functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Special Demands • Must possess and exhibit a strong positive attitude toward customer service and
have a genuine interest in geriatric care and uphold the philosophy of the community.
Mental & Physical Requirements • Position requires walking, reaching, bending, lifting, grasping, fine-hand
coordination, pushing and pulling. • Must possess the ability to communicate with residents. • Must be able to distinguish smells and temperatures. • Must be able to remain calm under emergency situations and while dealing with
multiple tasks.
Job's Normal Work Environment • Works in clean, well-lighted and well-ventilated assisted living and/or nursing
home facility.
Type of Equipment Typically Used in this Job • This position requires various applications of manual dexterity and eye-hand
coordination necessary for the implementation of various types of resident activities.
Problem Solving Abilities • Ability to handle routine problems. • Ability to know when to refer problems to supervisor.
