Then and Now By Raymond Landeros
A number of years ago, our then ten year old
granddaughter, Renée, came to stay with us for the week-
end. On Sunday morning I asked Renee if she would make
a pot of coffee for us and she complied, feeling very grown
up that we had asked her to perform such an adult task.
She went into the kitchen, got the Mr. Coffee machine
from the shelf and put the coffee into the basket and filled
the machine with the proper amount of water. Just then
the TV went off, the refrigerator ceased to operate and the
coffee maker sat useless on the kitchen counter.
We have all heard of people who just can’t get

Continued from page 1
started without their morning dose of caffeine and I am one of those people. This was a helluva time for a power failure, I thought. Frantically, I searched under the kitchen sink, the oven or any place that my wife may have stored the old fashioned coffee pot when we’d first moved into our home. “What are you looking for Grandpa,?” asked Renée. “The old coffee pot we used before you
were born. I knew it would come in handy one day but I’ll bet your Grandma threw it out.” My caffeine deprived system caused me to be short tempered and it showed in my voice.
“What good would it be to find it now? You can’t make coffee anyway, we have no electricity.” “I won’t need electricity to make coffee in this pot,” I said. The smirk on Renee's face told me she thought I was about to tell her one of my “Shaggy Dog” stories. “Sure,” she said mockingly, “a coffee pot that doesn’t need electricity.” “Yes,” I said a little miffed at her disbelief. “It is a pot that comes equipped with a hollow metal tube on top of which is a perforated metal disc on top of that. Next you fill the pot with water and put the pot on the stove. As the water boils it percolates through the tube and falls back onto the basket thus making coffee. The glass bubble on the lid lets you see the color of the coffee as it percolates. “Wow Grandpa, you said all that without taking a breath,” said Renee still smiling mockingly. I was a little annoyed at her teasing but I realized I shouldn’t expect her to understand what I was trying to describe to
her. She had never lived in a home without a garbage disposal or an automatic washing
machine, or a refrigerator without a freezer. In all probability she had never seen a dial tele-phone or a telephone booth. Would she believe me if I told her we once used prefixes instead of area codes? She couldn’t imagine life without a TV set. I thought back to when I was Renee’s age and compared my mother’s 1940’s kitchen to our modern day kitchen.
There was a large, wooden,
compartmentalized ice box lined with galvanized metal to keep the cold in. There was a modern (at the time) white stove with match box holder mounted on the wall next to it. On the table was a bread toaster that could toast two slices of bread at once but only one side of each slice at a time. And of course, the coffee pot that sat on the stove with the glass bubble on its cap that
would show the color of the coffee as it brewed.
The icebox was replenished with a large cake of ice once a week by the iceman. He drove a large truck loaded with cakes of ice, scored to facilitate the separation of the ice into smaller cakes. There was a large pan beneath the box to collect the melting ice and was emptied
periodically. The iceman would deliver ice house to house and put the block into the ice box. Iceman and milkman are two terms that would be unknown to anyone Renee’s age. The milk-man would deliver milk and other dairy products to your door every morning. And milk would be in glass bottles with about an inch of cream on top making it necessary to shake the bottle thoroughly before serving the milk. In one corner of the sink was a triangular metal or plastic sieve-like tray, into which the immediate garbage could be emptied before carrying it out to a large garbage can in the backyard. This can was lined with newspaper and carried to the
curb for the collectors once a week.
But this reminiscing wasn’t doing anything to relieve my craving for caffeine. In desperation I rummaged through the pantry and found an old jar of instant coffee. Ugh! I put the required amount of granules into a cup and was just about to fill it with hot tap water when the power came back on. The coffee maker began to drip the precious liquid into the glass
pot and all was well with the world once again.
“So tell me some more about the “good old days’ Grandpa,” said Renee as she poured coffee for my wife and I. “Was it hard to make fire with two sticks and a few dried leaves?” The teasing smile was still on her face, but having had my sip of coffee I was able to overlook her
sarcastic attempt at comedy and answered,
“Only when the cave was damp.”
