The inaugural flight of Samoa’s new national carrier, Samoa Airways landed last night at Sydney International. Samoa Airways flight OL855 landed with dignitaries and passengers including the Minister for Samoa Airways, Hon. Lautafi Fio Selafi Purcell and Samoa Airways CEO Mr Seiuli Alvin Tuala. Samoa Airways will

be flying with a Boeing 737-800, twice a week Sydney/Apia/Sydney.

Flight OL856 will depart Sydney on Thursdays and Saturdays at 2140hrs, arriving into Apia at 0615 (the next day). The return flights (OL855) will depart Apia on Thursdays and Saturdays at 1705hrs,

arriving Sydney at 2040hrs.

Samoa Airways had its first flight from Apia to Auckland on Tuesday, 14th of November. They will service the New Zealand market with 6 flights per week Auckland to Apia return.

Airline blankets made from recycled plastic bottlesOperating quieter, fuel efficient new equipment is just one way an airline can help the environment – Emirates for instance has come up with an idea to use up some of the plastic bottles heading for landfill – or even worse roadsides or our waterways. Next time you snuggle into a warm fleece blanket on a long haul economy flight take extra comfort from the fact that it was made from 28 recycled plastic bottles.

Coming up with environmentally sound ideas is not restricted to the more glamorous end of the business. Emirates engineering department tabled two winners – a water-saving aircraft washing procedure that saves 11 million litres of water a year and installing light emitting diode lighting in the hangars which reduces the power bill by 237 megawatt-

hours of electricity a month.

The move to electric powered equipment has also been speeded up. Ground handling operations in Dubai and around the world are increasingly operated by electric / hybrid equipment, reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants.

Electric ground equipment is also being used in the UK, the US, Netherlands, Switzerland and Singapore.

According to the chief executive of the Emirates, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, a key part of the group’s environmental strategy is operating an eco-efficient fleet. “During the year the carrier retired the last remaining Airbus A340s and A330s.

It now only operates a passenger fleet of Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s, and together with its Boeing 777 freighters, the average fleet age stands at 5.3 years.”

This is well below the industry average, he added. The group continued its strong support for action against the illegal trade in wildlife, and through its “A Greener Tomorrow” initiative contributed to three organisations in Africa that are at the forefront of wildlife protection.

German rail update EXPLORING Germany by train has become more efficient through the introduction of more direct-high speed trains on routes around the country this month.

Speaking at a function in Sydney on Fri, Rail Europe’s bdm Richard McKisack explained that travellers will save up to two hours when travelling by train on a new route between Berlin and Munich effective 10 Dec, with the journey time reduced to under four hours.

The new Deutsche Bahn route permits travel at up to 300km/ hour, passing through Germany’s longest railway bridge at 8,600m, 270kms of new tracks, 37 bridges and 27 tunnels.

Among the major goals of the €10 billion project was to reduce CO2 emissions by shifting traffic from inter German flights to rail, and doubling the country’s railway market share.

McKisack said int’l travellers would also see the benefits of the new line with reductions in interchanges en-route.

Whitehaven recognised as world’s second best beach

Whitehaven Beach is regularly recognised as being one of the top spots in Australia but now the iconic 7km stretch of white silica sand has been named the second best beach in the world..

FlightNetwork, Canada’s largest travel website, has created a list of The World’s 50 Best Beaches© after consultation with more than 600 of the world’s top travel professionals including journalists, editors, bloggers and agencies.

Whitehaven Beach, which scored 10/10 for sheer untouched beauty, remoteness and sand and water quality, was described as “heaven on earth” by judges. “Whitehaven Beach will make you believe in love at first sight…. seeing all that untouched natural beauty will make you believe in a tropical utopia with glowing sands and crystalline beaches…this stretch of sand, backed by tree-covered mountains, is a heaven on earth which one must see to believe.”

Sharron Livingston, from The Travel Magazine, said: “Whitehaven Beach has oh-so-white sands, deepest green rainforests, and crystalline waters.

It’s a wild island, part of the Great Barrier Reef, and is by far the most beautiful location to experience.”

A spokesperson for FlightNetwork said The World’s 50 Best Beaches© was the most definitive list of beaches ever

assembled. “It is a diverse collection of off-the-beaten-path slices of paradise from every hidden corner of our planet,” she said. “By asking the top travel professionals – the people who do this for a living – to gain insight from their opinions and expertise, FlightNetwork has created the most trustworthy and accurate list out there to inspire travellers and help them choose their upcoming [Northern Hemisphere] winter holiday destinations.”

Tourism Whitsundays Sales & Marketing Manager Tash Wheeler thanked FlightNetwork for their hard work putting together the list of The World’s 50 Best Beaches© and said it was always nice to have the Whitsundays’ stunning natural assets recognised.

“Being recognised as the world’s second best beach is a reminder of just how beautiful and special Whitehaven Beach is,” she said.

“We are truly blessed in the Whitsundays with pristine islands and mainland, subtropical rainforest, crystal clear water and a warm, sunny climate. It’s no wonder holidaymakers continue to visit in droves, with Whitehaven Beach one of their “must see” attractions.”

The holder of the Best Beach title is Grace Bay, in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Sydney makes world’s best destinations

It’s official – Sydney is one of the best places to visit in the world, according to global travel magazine, National Geographic Traveler, which today revealed its hotly anticipated ‘Best of the World’ list of 21 unmissable global destinations for 2018.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said the accolade cemented Sydney’s reputation as Australia’s most exciting and vibrant visitor destination.

“Placing in National Geographic Traveler’s ‘Best of the World’ list has reinforced the enduring appeal of Sydney as one of the world’s most popular travel destinations, and we’re thrilled to be the only Australian city featured,” Mr Marshall said. “Recognition on this prestigious list will continue to raise the profile of Sydney as a global visitor destination as we work towards the NSW Government’s goal of doubling overnight visitor expenditure to the State by 2020.”

Mr Marshall said the accolade for

Australia’s premier city was yet another triumph for the State’s tourism and events industry. “Sydney’s iconic attractions, festivals and events, and natural beauty continue to amaze visitors from across the globe all year round.

Whether they are visiting for the first time or returning after discovering something special, Sydney never fails to impress,” Mr Marshall said. National Geographic Traveler’s ‘Best of the World’ 2018 list was compiled following a competitive selection process that involved nominations from the magazine’s worldwide network of editors, writers and explorers.

National Geographic Traveler’s ‘Best of the World’ list was guided by the values of cultural engagement, heritage preservation, ecological conservation and sustainability. The full results are in the December/January 2018 issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine .
