The Islands of Tahiti receives first UNESCO World Heritage listing

Just when you think The Islands of Tahiti couldn’t possibly get any more special, that’s precisely what happens. After a long and committed campaign, the Taputapuatea marae (sacred site) on the island of Raiatea was officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site earlier this month.

World Heritage Sites are those places deemed to be of special cultural or physical significance, and the Taputapuatea marae is most certainly both. An ancient sacred site where traditional ceremonies were performed, the site features hundreds of stones arranged by Polynesian ancestors – stones that are believed to hold Mana,

a source of power and spiritual strength. The marae also marks the first cultural site to be recognized by UNESCO within French Polynesia.

The home of the marae, Raiatea, is just a 45-minute flight from Papeete, Raiatea is the second largest economic centre of The Islands of Tahiti and an important nautical base. The island is expected to benefit from the World Heritage listing through attracting additional visitors looking for travel opportunities that offer authentic historical and cultural experiences. A destination known for its idyllic landscapes, warm and welcoming people, and a vibrant culture, Raiatea is also already

a favoured destination for hikers in particular. With a rugged coastline and mountains reaching as high as 1000 metres, the island’s scenic hiking trails offer an abundance of opportunity to discover the island’s incredible ancient civilization – which now includes a site of recognized international significance.

Stars show off safety in new British Airways video A team of top celebrities including Gordon Ramsay, Rob Brydon, Sir Ian McKellen and Thandie Newton make appearances in British Airways’ entertaining new pre-flight safety video, which launches in September.

The new film features some of Britain’s best-loved personalities and has been designed to help customers absorb important safety messages, while boosting fund-raising for ‘Flying Start’, the global charity partnership between British Airways and Comic Relief.

Alex Cruz, British Airways’ chairman and CEO, said: “It’s extremely important to us that customers engage with our safety video,

and involving some of the nation’s most well-known personalities has given us the chance to create something fun that we hope people will watch from start to finish – and remember.

“We’ve worked with Comic Relief since 2010 and our customers have already helped us generate £16.5 million for great causes. We hope the new video will enable us to exceed our goal of raising £20 million by 2020.”

Ten celebrities are seen auditioning in humorous sketches in front of comedian Asim Chaudhry, as his People Just Do Nothing character Chabuddy G, for a coveted part

in the safety video, while simultaneously demonstrating the safety features and procedures on the aircraft.

In a characteristic section at the end of the video, Rowan Atkinson comically fumbles around his seat for loose change to place in a Flying Start envelope, which are available to customers on flights to enable them to make donations to Comic Relief.

Study reveals the cost of taxi travel in 80 cities across the globe Online used car dealership Carspring have produced a study revealing the price of taxi use in 80 cities around the world. With their interests in all things automotive, the online dealer looked to bring transparency to the public regarding taxi costs, particularly for those who may be travelling abroad this summer. Included in the study are the prices of a 3km inner city taxi ride, a journey between the airport and the city centre, and the cost of one hour’s waiting time. To help those with real nerves about taxis altogether, the study also provides information on which models of car are most popular in each city, and if an alternative such as Uber is available in each location.

“Nothing beats the relief of hopping into a comfortable taxi after a long day of sightseeing in a new city,” says Maximilian Vollenbroich, Co-founder of Carspring. “But in some cities, this simply isn’t affordable, and in other places, tourists are at risk of being overcharged. We hope our research helps travellers prepare for safe, fun, and budget-friendly travel in whatever ride best suits them.”

To find out the cost of the initial hire, the cost per kilometre, the cost per additional kilometre and waiting time prices, data provided by the official website of each city was used, when available, as in some cases city governments regulate these prices. Official airport sites and tourist information web pages provided information on the cost of a journey between the international airport and city centre. To account for the difference in price depending on the time of day, length of trip, number of passengers and the model of car, the average metered price of the different combinations was chosen. Multiple taxi companies per city were contacted regarding the most popular vehicle type amongst drivers.

In order to rank the cities, the price of a standard 3km taxi fare was calculated by taking into account the Initial Hire, the Cost per km and one minute of Waiting time.

Melbourne, Australia placed in position 39 out of 80 cities (80 being most expensive), with a cost of US $7.42 for a 3km ride.

Palawan is voted ‘Best Island in the World’ The US travel and lifestyle publication, Travel + Leisure has announced this year’s winners of its prestigious annual ‘World’s Best Awards’ survey. The breathtaking islands of Palawan in the Philippines received the coveted prize of being named once again as the ‘Best Island in the World’.

Palawan features over 2,000 islands, offering guests stunningly beautiful beaches, secret lagoons, underground rivers, and exotic wildlife to explore and discover.

In addition, Boracay Island was named third in the ‘Best Island in the World’ category, firmly securing the Philippines as a must-see holiday destination.

Norjamin Delos Reyes, Tourism Attaché at Philippines Department of Tourism Australia and New Zealand said, “We are delighted that Palawan and Boracay have been recognised as the first and third ‘Best Islands in the World’!

These islands truly represent the essence of a tropical island holiday escape, complete with a backdrop of beautiful white sandy beaches, crystal clear water and a fun and lively atmosphere. The Philippines provides lasting memories of the most stunning scenery and with over 7,107 islands to explore it’s a destination for every traveller.” Palawan is located in the western part of the Philippines and stretches between Mindoro in the Northeast to Borneo, Indonesia in the Southwest.

Here, quaint vishing villages, UNESCO World Heritage sites, jungles and beaches perfectly combine to create an idyllic setting and holiday adventure. Guests can swim, snorkel, kayak and dive to discover marine animals, or hike and trek to witness the abundance of wildlife.

Palawan’s main airport is Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS) and there are two smaller airports in Palawan, which are further north, catering to the majority of travellers.

On Busuanga Island, the Busuanga Airport (USU) accommodates for the town of Coron and the resorts of the Calaman Archipelago.

Whilst, El Nido and the Bacuit Archipelago are served by the small privately owned Lio Airport also referred to as El Nido Airport (ENI). Guests on the offshore luxury resorts can use Island Transvoyager Inc. (ITI).

AirAsia Zest, Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines (PAL) offer several daily one hour and 15 minutes flights between Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) and Puerto Princesa (PPS). Cebu Pacific offers flights from Mactan Cebu International Airport (CEB) and Iloilo International Airport (ILO), which take approximately 50 minutes, whilst PAL also connects Puerto Princesa (PPS) and Iloilo (ILO) via a one hour and five minutes flight.

AirAsia Zest, Cebu Pacific and SkyJet provide flights approximately one hour in duration between Manila (MNL) and Busuanga (USU) and PAL flies directly and takes one hour and 30 minutes between Cebu (CEB) and Busuanga (USU).

Alternatively, guests can choose to travel on a ferry service between Manila, Iloilo, Mindoro and Palawan. This latest award win for the Philippines, follows Boracay receiving the

much sought after accolade of the ‘Best Island in the Word’ by Conde Nast Readers’ Choice Awards 2016. Palawan, was named second in the same awards.

The Philippines is fast becoming a popular destination for tourists around the world as it caters to a wide variety of travellers across all budgets. The country offers various accommodation options and a magnitude of activities including swimming, diving, hiking, zip lines, kayaking and many more catering to all travellers.

This is proving to be a successful combination, as, visitor arrivals in May this year were above 500,000, an increase of nearly 20% on last year during the same period[1]. Follow Tourism Philippines on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Qatar Airways confirms daily service to Canberra

In a move which has delighted aviation authorities in Australia’s capital city, Qatar Airways has confirmed that next February, Canberra will become its fifth Australian destination, with daily scheduled flights. The airline will extend one of its current daily Sydney frequencies to Canberra.

Qatar Airways group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker, described the announcement as “yet another proud moment for Qatar Airways and another milestone in our increasing expansion plans.

“We are delighted to finally bring our award-winning service to Canberra in 2018, our ninth year of operation in Australia. As Australia’s capital city, Canberra is an important addition to our global route map and further boosts the existing strong ties between Australia and Qatar.

“We are confident our highly-acclaimed product will appeal greatly to government, business and leisure travellers alike and we look forward to welcoming our passengers on board very soon.”

“I am proud to say that in spite of the

current situation, we continue to provide our award-winning, five-star service to all our passengers. We are carrying forward our robust expansion plans, and will continue to grow and expand to exciting new destinations across the globe.”

By “current situation”, Al Baker was referring to the recent blockade by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, led by Saudi Arabia, which he said “has had little impact on the national carrier of the State of Qatar thanks to a robust growth strategy, varied investment portfolio and its consistent award-winning customer experience”.

The airline will be the first international carrier to offer Australia’s capital city daily scheduled flights to Doha via Sydney. Qatar Airways’ second-daily Sydney flight will make its way on to Canberra commencing February 2018. Return flights will be on a Canberra-Sydney-Doha routing. Canberra flights will be served by a 358-seater Boeing 777-300 aircraft.

Qatar Airways began its first daily Sydney flight on 1 March 2016, upgrading it to the superjumbo A380 just six months after the airline’s Sydney launch.

Canberra Airport managing director Stephen Byron, said the arrival of Qatar Airways was an exciting development in the fulfilment of a major goal.

“We have had a long-held dream that we could connect Canberra with the rest of the world. The beginning of the Qatar Airways service in February provides seamless access to the major international hub of Doha, and a stepping off point for the Middle East, Europe and points beyond.”
