And since the temperatures have plummeted outside we felt it was only appropriate for the prices to plummet here in the store. Our January/February Gazette is always one of the most fun of the year because the pressure of the holiday season is over, allowing us to focus on one thing...Helping to connect you with some great wine deals. This is a Gazette not to be overlooked for a number of reasons…

• It gives us a chance to “clean house” and really incentivize our customers to scoop us some hot deals with discounts up to 61%

• It is the PERFECT time to let you know about all the great new releases set for the coming year. For starters, how about 2006 Brunellos, 2006 Barolos, 2007 Barbarescos, 2009 Rhone, 2008 Burgundy, and 2007 & 2008 Napa Valley?

• Worry-free purchasing. If you don’t want your order delivered any time soon due to the weather, we’ll store it for you free of charge for the next 3 months.

At the start of the year people are looking for bargains and a reason to get excited...There’s a lot of both in this Zachys Gazette. Honestly, we had more to say than we could fit into these pages and as a result we have been firing out some SUPER SEXY e-mail offers this month. Have you seen them? If not, reach out to our customer service team to sign up at [email protected] or give us a call 800.723.0241. Let us know what areas of the wine world you would like to be kept up to speed on. Trust me, you’ll be glad you signed up!

Finally, as we go to press, my team members and I are preparing for our European travels to taste our way through new vintages and scour our hot new purchases. I am fully aware that January/February is not the most glamorous time to be in Burgundy/Champagne/Tuscany/Piedmont, etc., but it is part of our commitment to our client base to be out in the forefront and deliver the best of what the wine world has to offer in 2011!

So, let’s all KEEP WARM...be sure to check out all the deals in the following pages…and look forward to an exciting 2011!

All my best,

Andrew

In the latest issue of the Wine Advocate, Antonio Galloni weighs in on Champagne!

One of the wines that caught our attention this time around is the René Geoffroy Rosé de Saignee.

Last December Antonio awarded the 2006 based cuvee a 93 point review. This intrigued us and we made sure to place an order to have the latest release here for the holidays in three different formats.

The new release based on 2008 wine has just arrived and it appears that Mr. Galloni made sure to taste the new batch for his article. The result…Upgrade 94 points!

“The NV Brut Rosé de Saignee Premier Cru, tasted from magnum, is

cool, mineral and reserved, with tons of power to burn. This really needs

another 6-12 months on the cork to recover from its relatively recent

disgorgement, but is a jewel of a wine. The current release of the Rose

de Saignee Premier Cru is 100% 2008 juice, although the wine can’t be

labeled as such since it didn’t spend the required three years on its lees.

No matter, the wine shows tons of 2008 vintage character along with a

compelling, irresistible personality…94.” the Wine Advocate 12/10

The November Wine Spectator Advance was full of some tremendous Champagne Scores!

In this feature, Bollinger’s Special Cuvee was rated 94 points making it the highest rated, Non-Vintage Champagne under $60!

Of course, Krug Grand Cuvee has a 95 point review but the wine is $150 per bottle and there are a couple of Roses in the mix that all start at $75 and go up to $289.

Greatest Value of Le Mesnil!

Included in the massive issue of the December Wine Advocate are some stellar reviews on Champagne!

One of the stand-outs, that we hoped to see is the Pierre Peter’s 2002!

Once again this limited Special Cuvee from Pierre Peter’s scores 95 points.

This is an exciting, racy wine that I find completely irresistible and sensual…Needless to say, the 2000 Cuvee Speciale “Les Chetillons” is highly recommended…95.” WA 12/08

Cuvee Speciale 2002 (95WA) {#338256} .............. 110.00 88.00“The 2002 Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Cuvee Speciale Les Chetillons, from one of the top sites in Mesnil, positively explodes on the palate. Layers of ripe fruit lead to smoke, minerals and ash in this opulent, full-bodied Champagne. The 2002 Chetillons is painfully young at this stage, but its class and sheer pedigree are impossible to miss. This is a fabulous, breathtaking Champagne from Pierre Peters. The Chetillons is made from three parcels with vines ranging from 35 to 68 years of age. This is Lot LSBAC02, disgorged: April, 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2032.

I can’t recommend these two Champagnes from Pierre Peters highly enough. In particular, the vintage Blanc de Blancs, from the Chetillons vineyard in Mesnil, is one of the region’s great wines, with a brilliant track record for aging as I discovered when I visited the property earlier this year…95.” WA 12/10

Overall the 2009 Bordeaux Vintage is TREMENDOUS and is a Vintage to rival 2005 especially for the Left Bank appellations!

With the majority of the major 2009s not scheduled to arrive stateside until 2012 it is pretty far off for most of us to try anything from 2009.

Until now. Our first 2009 has landed stateside!

Against the odds, they remain dedicated to creating quality rather than industrial wine despite the higher costs associated with boutique wine-making. All aspects of production, including the bottling, are done on-site in order to ensure quality while keeping costs down. Additionally, they’ve increased the foliage and density in the vineyards to create more concentrated grapes.

Finally Back!Years ago we had the wines of Gilles Noblet in the store but due to Vintages, availability etc., it hasn’t been until now that they were back in-stock!

This little estate has been on our radar for years and we quietly would buy the tiny bit we could get our hands on when we could.

Then at the end of 2008 the Wine Spectator Top 100 broke and this tiny estate that we always kept so close to the vest became an overnight sensation with their 2006 Pouilly Fuisse.

Since then it has been harder and harder to get the wines. So when Andrew and I were planning our 2010 Burgundy trip we made a point, when in Pouilly Fuisse, to drop in and visit with Gilles.

The visit paid off! Not only did we get a preview of these tremendous 2009s, he took our order right there on the spot!

They’ve just arrived and these beauties are sure to be a big hit as they have all that richness and roundness that you have come to love from estates like Ferret, Chalet Pouilly and JJ Vincent! -JN

“Noël Pinguet, longtime cellar master at Domaine Huet ranks the 2009 vintage right up there with 1947 and 1989 at the very pinnacle of the post-

war years at the estate. From the examples of the 2009 Huets that I tasted, this is indeed a great, great year for the Huet wines” John Gilman, View From The Cellar (Special Edition)

“Noel Pinguet professes great confi dence in his 2009s and pleasure in one of those rare vintages where it was possible to bottle everything from

sec through Cuvee Constance...” David Schildknech, the Wine Advocate 8/10

Domaine Huet lucky and unlucky for me, was my first introduction into serious Chenin Blanc. From that first time of trying one of the Huet wines, I was hooked. Of course my first introduction into Moelleux Vouvray had to be a 1947 Huet from the cellars of La Tour d’Argent in Paris whose massive wine cellar survived WWII. The wine was pristine! Fresh, rich, full and extremely complex; not to mention still youthful. From that point forward my perception of Chenin Blanc and its virtues where changed. I started trying all types of Vouvray, Savennieres, Coteaux de Layon but I keep coming back to the Vouvrays of Domaine Huet.

The diversity and freshness of their wines is what keeps bringing me back. I have constantly been impressed by the wines over the years and have not only become a fan of the their Moelleux selections but a fan of their Sec wines as well. Of course, I do have that guilty pleasure moment when I do get my hands on a bottle or two of the Cuvee Constance. The first vintage of this extremely limited cuvee was 1989 and ever since then this wine has been called the Chateau d’Yquem of the Loire Valley!

We are extremely excited to be offering the 2009 Vintage of the Huet wines. 2009 is the greatest Vouvray vintage of modern time! It rivals the 1947 and from what I have tasted of these young, seductive wines already, I can tell you these wines have all the potential to last 25 years or more! The hard thing will be letting them sit in the cellar that long. They are so YUMMY now!! Fresh, rich, powerful, complex and seductive these are some of the best young Vouvrays that I have ever tried. I know that I am stashing away some of the 2009 Moelleux for a couple of years. -JN

Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate is no doubt one of the world’s leading wine critics; not to mention the Rhone Valley’s leading champion. In the past several years, we have been reading increasingly glowing reviews for the Delas wines from Robert Parker.

Moreover, Parker has become a huge fan of the Delas Cotes du Rhone St. Esprit!

Not only did he rate the 2007 a 90 point wine and call it one of the best values of the 2007, he even featured the wine in his last book, “Parker’s Wine Bargains.”

In this past October’s issue of the Wine Advocate, Robert released his first 2009 reviews for Delas and once again the Cotes du Rhone St. Esprit was rated 90 points.

But not just 90 points…he called the wine “the best Cotes du Rhone I have ever tasted from Delas.”

With that in mind, we have made sure to pre-commit to as much 2009 as possible. -JN

This is one of our first 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape offers to date and hails from one of the best domains of the village…Domaine Pierre Usseglio!

This domaine is clearly a favorite of Robert Parker and rightfully so. The estate turns out fantastic wine no matter the vintage. In 2009 it looks as if Jean-Pierre and Thierry have kept up the family tradition and turned out two classic wines once again.

Remember these two wines scored tremendously well in the blockbuster 2005 and 2007 vintages!

Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Papes have just scored huge with Robert Parker on their 2008 Vintage.

Robert Parker has tasted through the 2008 Vintage and just released his final reviews and Clos Saint Jean has come out on top with a 95 point Wine (Deus Ex-Machina) that Parker calls “the wine of the vintage”!

Plus the Combe des Fous received 94 points and the entry level “endearing seductive” Chateauneuf a solid 91 point review.

Clos Saint Jean is clearly one of the most consistent producers of Chateauneuf; turning out tremendous wines vintage after vintage. Pascal and Vincent are doing a tremendous job with this estate along with the help of Rhone’s leading consultant Philippe Cambie. This past spring Andrew and I tasted at Clos Saint Jean with Vincent and Philippe and we knew then that the 2008s were some of the best wines of the Vintage. Consequently, we made sure to secure as much as we could of these wines. As an interesting side note for all you Cambie fans, Philippe lives only a 2 minute walk away from Clos Saint Jean’s cellars…does proximity and time allotted translate in these wines? Perhaps but either way they are tremendous efforts of the Vintage! -JN

“Pascal and Vincent Maurel appear to have achieved great success in both 2008 and 2009 (and don’t forget they produced three perfect wines

in 2007). To say they are on a qualitative hot streak is the understatement of the wine world...Kudos to Pascal and Vincent Maurel as well as

their brilliant consultant, Philippe Cambie…” Robert Parker the Wine Advocate 10/10

Once again the Maurel Brothers & Cambie have made the wine(s) of the Vintage!

When it comes to Chateauneuf du Pape, there are plenty of outstanding estates. Two estates that consistently rise to the top and turn out magnificent wines including 95 to 100 pointers, are Domaine Pegau and Domaine de la Janasse!

Both estates have solidified themselves as two of the premier properties in Chateauneuf du Pape. In 2005 and 2007, they crafted magnificent wines that were some of the best of the region if not perfect scores.

The 2009s from both estates are looking extremely promising! The Janasse Vieilles Vignes has already been called “a candidate for the wine of the vintage” by Robert Parker. The Cuvee Reserve also has received stellar notes from Robert Parker and looks to be benefiting from the estate’s decision to put the top production of Cuvee da Capo into the Cuvee Reserve! With no Capo that means the Cuvee Reserve will have even more Beefiness and Structure!

Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate has slowly been releasing his reviews and impression on the 2009 Rhone Vintage. Back in August in his value section he let us in on a few wines including today’s featured wine…the Cuvee Romaine by Domaine la Garrigue at 92 points!

Our initial reaction, GREAT this wine is always a top scoring best buy and if it’s at 92 points then the 2009 Cotes du Rhone are going to be scoring huge in the October issue.

It’s a new year….and I plan to get off to a fast start!

It was just two years ago (January 2009) that I was preparing my requests for the 2004 Brunellos...knowing full well that it was a GREAT vintage from Montalcino. As expected we received an overwhelming response on the vintage with THOUSANDS of cases being sold. My only regret was that I did not get an earlier start on the vintage and scoop up larger stocks when the wines were available for sale the 1st week of February.

Here’s my chance for redemption.

2006 is another FABULOUS vintage from Montalcino (One which I feel will get better acclaim once the wines have been released and people get a chance to start tasting!). Wine Spectator has weighed in with an early broad stroke vintage review of….

Tuscany/Brunello di Montalcino

Vintage Score Drink Rec Description

2006 93-96 NYR Complex and powerful wines that impress with ripe yet fresh fruit and fi rm yet silky tannins

So, this year we are trying to get in front of this great vintage before the wines have even been released from the cellars in Italy. We have a very good history here at the store with 40+ estates knowing the professional reviews they tend to get and the price points they always come in at. Armed with all of this data, we are “hedging our bets” and giving you a chance to get in on this vintage early on (Most wines will be arriving in late Spring/Summer 2011).

The one thing you do NOT have to worry about…getting your wine. Zachys will deliver!

This is a vintage that you do not want to miss out on and now is the time to jump in. -AM

P.S. Wines have not been reviewed yet, so we wanted to give you a “point of reference” from the last excellent vintage...2004.

Cerbaione 2005 {#158658} ...................................... 60.00 39.99Il Cerbaione is the result of a decision to combine our superb Sangiovese with the Merlot that we have been growing in Tuscany for more than a generation, in order to create a wine with a less pronounced varietal character but with notable depth, power and concentration. Sangiovese is always present in a higher proportion than Merlot but the percentage in which the two grapes are blended is decided from year to year, according to the characteristics of each vintage.

Rosso di Montalcino 2006 {#150132} .................... 36.99 23.992006 isn’t just a good vintage for Montalcino….it’s a GREAT vintage! With Wine Spectator giving the region an overall vintage review of 93-96 points, you know you are starting with all the right stuff! A smooth wine, but with significant structure and tannins, and persistent hints of fresh but well-ripened fruit. It come from the firms same vineyards used to produce the Brunello.

Paul Hobbs’ Best Value Cabernet…and it’s not Napa!

Vina Cobos Felino Cabernet Sauvignon 2008—91pts from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Paul Hobbs is one of Napa and Sonoma’s most well known and regarded winemakers. From crafting some of the highest rated Pinot Noirs and Cabernets from both valley’s the Paul Hobbs winery is not only one of the most consistent but frankly one whose wines average will over $75 per bottle.

This is not the case with Paul’s Mendoza project! His Vina Cobos Felino wines are some of the Best Values on the market today! Selling for $20 per bottle and receiving terrific reviews year after year the Felino Cabernet is Paul’s Best Value Cabernet.

Just check out what Robert Parker and his Wine Advocate have to say about Vina Cobos:

“Vina Cobos is Paul Hobbs’ winery in Mendoza. He is better known (at

least for the moment) to USA connoisseur/collectors for his namesake

winery in Napa Valley which has received many accolades (including

100-point scores from Robert Parker) for its Cabernets, Pinot Noirs,

and Chardonnays. What is less well known is that Hobbs is a pioneer

in fi ne wine production in Argentina, having started there in 1988…” the Wine Advocate 12/08

Germany’s FIRST 100 Point Vintage!?!

“… ripe, racy and pure Rieslings from Germany’s excellent 2009 vintage…” Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator.com 10/22/10

The first insight to the Germany 2009 Vintage from a major publication has just come out. Bruce Sanderson of Wine Spectator posted a feature at the end of October highlighting 29 wines that he has reviewed so far for Wine Spectator and most importantly gave us his thoughts on the Vintage!

Check out his comments on the Vintage below. His speculation is that the 2009 German Vintage is better than the 2007 (95WS), 2005 (98WS), and 2001 (98WS)!

If 2009 is better than a 98 point Vintage…is 2009 a 99 or 100 point Vintage!?!? Only time will tell.

We have plenty of 2009 Germans in-stock now! -JN

“Riesling fans take note: Here are 29 reasons to get excited about the

2009s from Germany. Rarely have I seen such ripe, expressive fl avors

of tropical fruit, stone fruits and citrus, in combination with vibrant

structures, piquant acidity and the omnipresent mineral underpinning

that makes German Riesling so compelling.

The 2009s come on the heels of 2007, 2005 and 2001, three classic-

rated years. After tasting more than 165 Rieslings from 2009 with

my colleague Kim Marcus, we can say they may be even better,

integrating the intensity of 2001, the exotic fruit notes and fl esh

of 2005 and the superb balance of 2007. Time will tell, but these

nascent beauties appear to have more fi ligree and fi nesse than their

predecessors…” Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator.com 10/22/10

California Merlot might be out of “vogue” but by no means is Merlot dead!

In the USA, Merlot is thriving and has found its best home in Washington State. Merlot is booming in Washington with some of the best examples of domestic Merlot we have ever seen coming from these terrific cool climate appellations. Either bottled on its own or the primary base of a blend, Merlot has proven to be the grape of choice for many of the greatest estates in Washington.

Add to it the state of Washington is on a Hot Streak with an amazing string of terrific Vintages!

The 2007 Quintessa has just arrived and was just voted part of the Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2010! Plus did we mention the wine scored 95 points?!
