Continuing with Prayers from the Past…

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Words Of Wisdom The spirit of wisdom, as we discover in today’s first reading, comes to those who pray for her. Wisdom, like the word of God, carries a message of consolation as well as of great challenge. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that the word of God, infused with the wisdom of God, is “sharper than any two-edged sword.” We cannot shrink from the wisdom of God, or from the word that has the power to penetrate our hearts and minds. Jesus, the living word of God, the embodiment of wisdom, has strong, deeply penetrating words for the rich young man who comes to him seeking answers to his most profound questions. Just when the young man thought he had done enough to fulfill God’s commands, more was asked of him. This is no less true for us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

We weekly sit in Mass and listen to the stories of the wisdom and might of the Lord. In the Scriptures, we witness those who have benefited from God’s intervention. His words and actions cause us to want also to be the recipients of His majestic works. We feel assured that if we are attentive to our Sacramental duties, attempt to follow the Commandments, and pray that the Lord too will reward us. What are the rewards we pray for, the glamor of riches and recogni-tion or the wealth of heaven?

Wealth and titles are the two things that tend to measure success in our society. We strive for possessions and continually struggle to assure that everyone recognizes us as one who stands out from the many. However, for God, neither money nor titles have any worth. We seek to accumulate gold and jewels, but for God, they are but a tiny bit of His creation. God also has no concern about titles that acclaim our exceptional talents, for these abilities are only an application of the gifts He loaned to us.

Even those who follow a moral life, like the man in the Gospel today, can fall into the trap of favoring of wealth and possessions compared to living forever in the presence of God. Jesus recognizes the efforts made by the man in following the Law but tells him that is not enough to reach heaven. Jesus attempts to redirect the man away from collecting items that are good for only a limited time and turn his attention to gathering the riches of heaven that never tarnishes. In the end, the man fails to accept that no amount of money will reserve a place in heaven for him.

As humans, we have a natural tendency to accumulate possessions. What happens if a few of toys are set out before a young child? One quickly finds that she confidently has taken possession of all of them and may refuse to share. It requires persistence on the part of the parents to teach the concept of sharing to the child. Owning things gives us a sense of security, a sense of power. It is true that some possessions are essential, such as food, clothing, and shelter, while others enable us to live more comfortably. We imagine that accumulating more things will lead to greater confidence that we can resist any threat. However, at some point in our lives, the stark realization occurs that no matter what we think we have gained in this world, it is all for naught at our deaths. At death, any hoarded money can be used only to purchase a more expensive casket that is inserted into the ground where no one will ever see it. Moreover, those treasured possessions dispersed to family and friends as memories eventually become dust collectors on a shelf. As the old saying goes ‘you can’t take it with you.’

In our effort to find God, we cannot remain committed to our possessions. Either we have confidence that God’s promise of heaven is real and we prepare ourselves to enter into His presence, or we make the most of our lives now and accept that there is no afterlife. Far too often it is at those last moments before death that one begins to re-examine the val-ue of possessions or the value of heaven. How can we be free to reach the glories of heaven if we are chained to huge boxes filled with possessions that drag along behind us in the sand? How will we ever get through the eye of the needle with all that baggage if the camel has difficulty?

If we are determined to carry our belongings with us, then fool’s gold will be our reward for all the years of hoarding the gold of this earth. If our priority is no longer seeking the goodness of God, we have travel far down into a dark mine shaft searching for those things that cannot bring everlasting joy. God then will seem as far away as the stars of the night, for we have allowed personal desires to hide the light of salvation.

And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen. (Philippians, 4:19-20)

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel: Mark 10:17-22

On the Way to Mass: What have you put before your love for Jesus? What is holding you back from following him fully? On the Way Home From Mass: Where could you make more room for God in your life? How would that feel? Living the Word: Encourage your family to consider what they could give up for a week to make space for God as a family together. Perhaps instead of watching TV in the evening, cards could be written to parishioners who are sick. Or the family might want to pray the Rosary in the car instead of listening to the radio or make a dessert for the homeless shelter. The time also might be spent going through the house and reducing possessions. Notice how this exercise shifts the attention of the family.

Why Do Catholics Do That? Why do Catholics have “formal” prayers? Prayer is “the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the

requesting of good things from God” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2559). Prayer, simply put, is talking with God, or else, spending time with him. In today’s busy world, we can’t always “hear” God right away. Formal prayers, like the Our Father and the Hail Mary help us attune to God’s way to speaking. They help calm our busy minds so God can speak to our hearts.

Partners in Faith -October 2018

Children's Liturgy of the Word is a program that invites school-aged children (kindergarten through grade 5) to leave the larger parish assembly during Mass to celebrate a concurrent Liturgy of the Word. The children return to the main parish assembly for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The children experience the same readings and rituals as the larger parish assembly, but use a special children's lectionary with a reflection experience geared for their age group. If you are interested in sharing your time and talents once a month with the children, please contact: Terri at 635-1362 or Email - [email protected]

Raising the Bar with the Faith and Life series! Raising the Bar with the Faith and Life series! We are in our fourth year of using this curriculum for grades Pre-K - 8th. The feedback from

catechists and families has been very positive! Each week a grade will be featured in the bulletin outlining the curriculum. This week Second Grade is featured. Jesus Our Life is the title of the Second Grade curriculum. This year the second graders will prepared for the sacraments of Penance and First Holy Communion through studying the development of salvation history. As students learn

about God’s plan of love and mercy, they begin to understand that these sacraments are God’s gift to us and that they too are part of God’s loving plan. Special emphasis is given to preparation for and reception of these sacraments, as well as learning about the Mass. Please take time during the week to review what your child(ren) learned this week in the religious formation sessions. Also, spend time this week helping prepare your child(ren) for upcoming weeks lesson. A syllabus is being provided to each student so parents can stay apprised as to the lesson that will be covered on a specific date.

Share the joy of the Rosary October is a month when we celebrate the Rosary. Pope St. Pius V attributed a 16th century naval victory saving Europe from a Turkish invasion to the intercession of Our Lady through the Rosary. We arm our children with a powerful weapon against evil when we teach them to call on Our Lady’s help through the Rosary. Sit together in a comfortable place. Remind children that Our Lady is a mom, happy to have her children’s attention. Choose intentions. When we pray for others’ best interests, children learn the power of prayer. Start with a story. Pick a mystery and use it to tell a story about Jesus’ life and ministry. Observe 30 seconds of silence. Sit silently for 30 seconds while picturing the image and mystery of Jesus’ life. Start by praying a decade. It takes less than five minutes. As youngsters are pray with patience, add mysteries and decades until you pray an entire Rosary. Don’t force it. We want prayer to be a joy, not a chore.

New Parish App Is Available! At St. Agnes Catholic Church we are pursuing new opportunities to foster a stronger parish

What’s Happening at St. Agnes School………...

Pumpkin Patch St. Agnes Pre-K-2nd grade students visited the Adams

Family pumpkin patch on Friday Oct. 5th. Students enjoyed searching for their “great pumpkin” as well as finding their way through the corn maze. Pre-K and

kindergarten students stayed and enjoyed a picnic lunch at the pumpkin farm.

Animals of all sizes and sorts were invited for a special blessing at the annual Blessing of the

Pets celebration held on the school playground on Thursday, October 4th. Each animal received

a special blessing and a St. Francis medal.

Water Education 5th grade students enjoyed their first field trip to

the Water Education day hosted at the YMCA Kiwanis camp. Students learned about the

importance of water conservation, water’s role in erosion, electricity, and recreation. It was a

great day to be outside learning more about one of our earth’s greatest resources.

September Virtuous Student

The first Golden Rule

Ceremony was held on Friday, Sept. 28th in the

Classroom News………... Second Grade Class

By Lori Svitak “It’s snowing,” yelled the children! Yes, it’s our first snow and the children are so excited. You would think it was Christmas! This has gotten the children anticipating and eager for the holidays. The first being Halloween.

In science, we are finishing up our unit on animals. This is a fun unit. Who doesn’t love animals? We got to do some experiments during this unit. One of the experiments focused on how body coverings help animals. We used shortening for blubber and ice water for the Arctic Ocean. The students put their hands in a bag of shortening and submerged it into the ice water. Then, put their other hand without shortening into the ice water. They had to tell the class which hand was warmer. They all agreed that the one with “blubber” was warmer. In reading, we finished our first unit. That meant a test! I am happy to say they did a great job. In social studies, we are learning about local, state, and national government. We located our state and national capital on a United States map. They loved looking at the giant map we have in our class. We also talked about the importance of rules and laws

We celebrated National Dot Day with a fun afternoon full of dot related activities. We painted on canvas with Q tips, created another picture with paint blotters, built structures with Dot candy and toothpicks, did dot-to-dot worksheets, conducted an experiment with skittles and warm water, and finally took pictures in a dot hat with our faces covered with dots.

Library News By Lana Payne

The students have been busy reconnecting to their favorite books as well as discovering new books. They are also enjoying reading to the newest member of the Library, Buffalo Bear. Buffalo Bear sports a sweatshirt from the University of Colorado and the students have made him feel very welcome and loved as a visitor to Nebraska. The library is blessed to have many “friends” such as Buffalo Bear that the student enjoy reading with during library time. It's almost here......THE BOOK FAIR! Mark your calendar, the Book Fair takes place October 22-25. Students are looking forward to this annual book event. They have been looking through the Scholastic Book Fair flyers and thinking about which books they would like to buy. As always, there are many great book picks in the flyer and there will be many, many more at the Book Fair. We hope you'll come check it out! The Reading Incentive program is underway and students have completed the month of September. Please encourage your child's love of reading. Read to your child, read with your child, and make time for your child to read to you. Reading can be a fun family affair! Happy Reading, See you at the Book Fair!

CONGRATULATIONS RAFFLE WINNERS!

Reading Incentive held the September raffle drawing for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. After completing the monthly Reading Incentive requirements, students in these grades receive a raffle ticket for every additional chapter book novel completed during that month. The September raffle winners are: Natalie Zeiler, Addison Peck, Kennedi Larson, George Schmall.

Music Room News By Andrea Tritt

This past month in music, we’ve been reviewing notes, note values, learning about different instruments, and we’ve even been learning some fun Swedish circle dances! We’ve also been preparing for singing at Mass every other week. Kindergarten recently started learning the Mass songs as well and they’ve

amazed me with how quickly they learn the refrains! They are very enthusiastic about using “the blue books!!”and request to sing their favorite songs from precious Mass services at the end of class. I just love hearing “I sang the songs at Mass!” from them after the service!

It seems early and hard to believe, but we’ll soon be starting on learning our music for the Christmas program set for December 6th! I figured since we’ve already had our first snow, it’s time to get in the spirit early and start preparing for our Christmas program! Singspirations is gearing up for participating in Old West Choirfest at Scottsbluff High School on November 3rd! We will most likely be one of the first performers early that morning. Please feel free to come out and watch us; we will appreciate the encouragement and support!
