B IBLE STUDY

9 .0 0 A.M. - 9 .4 5 A.M.

Sub Theme: Godly Leadership and Christian Discipleship.Topic: Challenges and Costs of Christian Discipleship.Text: Luke 9:57-62; 14:26-27, 33.Aims: i. To understand the meaning of ‘challenges and

costs of Christian Discipleship’; ii. To identify some of the challenges and costs of

Christian Discipleship; iii. To know the reasons for these and how they

can be overcome

Introduction: This topic has two possible interpretations-challenges and costs that individual disciples face and challenges and costs of raising disciples; the latter shall be the focus of this study. It is pertinent to state that Christian Discipleship is under attack, more from challenges than from the costs. Among the daunting challenges are the prevalence of unsound gospel, dearth of servant-leaders and an absence of enabling structures. This study will expose these challenges and costs to us and show us how to overcome them.

Study Guide1. Define the terms ‘challenges’ and ‘costs’ and relate them

to Christian Discipleship.2. Identify from these scriptures some of the costs of

Christian Discipleship: Luke 5:11; 9:57-62; 14:26-27, 33; John 12:24.

3. Read Acts 20:28-31; 1 Thess. 2:14-18; 2 Tim.3:1; and discuss the challenges to effective Christian Discipleship in the Church today in the light of:

a. System, operation and structureb. unsound doctrinec. dearth of servant leaders and disciplesd. Prevalence of populism and new age gospele. the ‘jet age’ (always in a hurry) phenomenon4. How can we effectively combat these challenges so as to

restore effective discipleship programme sin the Church today?

Conclusion: Myriads of challenges have hampered the Church’s effectiveness in Christian Discipleship for over decades. The Church also appears unwilling to bear the costs of discipleship hence the woes of the Christian faith. The extent every leader in any given Christian organization is willing to conquer these challenges will determine how much success or failure he/she will experience in discipleship.

Food For Thought: There is a way out of every challenge and there

is a reward for every cost catered for.

Memory Verse: Luke 9:62.

THE WORD OF GOD.Beyond all questions, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory. 2 Timothy 3:16.

The word of God can be described as the manifestation of the mind and will of God. It could be regarded as the divine messages. It is an active power with which God spoke the universe into being. The New Testament described Jesus Christ as the word of God which was manifested in the flesh. John 1:1-5. The word of God is so powerful and capable of changing any situation in life. “For the word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double – edged sword. It penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrows. It judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Heb 4:12.

The Old Testament Prophets spoke directly as the mouth piece of God and none of their word fell on empty ground. The same word spoken directly to the ancient people of God has been put together for our learning as the Holy Bible which contained the mind of God revealed to mankind. “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways but in these last days he has spoken to us by His Son whom He appointed heir of all things and through whom also He made the universe. Heb.1:1-2, He uses various medium to communicate His mind to Man.He spoke through the donkey to Balam (Numbers 22:1-35). He also spoke through supernatural manifestations. Exo. 3:1-4, Judges 6:37-40, Acts 9:1-5.

Ezekiel said that the word of God was sweet when He ate it. He said to me, “Son of Man, eat this scroll, I am giving you and fill your stomach with it” so I ate it and it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth. Eze 3:3. The psalmist also testified to this fact, they are more precious than gold, than much pure gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. Psalm 19:10. Peter in his general epistle reveals that prophecy never had its origin in the human, will, but prophets though human spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Pet. 1:21.

God has not stopped speaking to His people till date. God still speaks, but to only those who are ready and hungry for His word. He speaks to those whose mind are not sealed up, those who are open-minded, listening to correction, obedient and those who will speak For Him. The word of God: * Nourishes dry soul (Psalm 119:25)* Strengthen weary bones (Ps.119:107)* Redirects the wayward gaze (Ps.119:37)* Soothes our discouraged heart (Ps.119:47)

* Gives us peace (Ps.119:165)* Fills us with hope (Ps.119:49)* Feeds our hungry spirit (Ps.119:103)* Grants us deep wisdom (Ps.119:100)* Reassure us during pain (Ps.119:75)* Keeps us from falling into temptation (Ps.119:115)* Points out our wrong beliefs and actions (Ps.119:29)* Assures us of our eternal inheritance (Ps.119:125)* Comfort us in our time of trouble (Ps. 119:50)* Leads us to Jesus Christ (119:76)* Lightens our path (Ps. 119:105)

God wants to speak to you also, for He said “Whether you turn to the right or to the left your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying “this is the way” walk in it. Isaiah 30:21.He has messaged for each day of our lives.

The sovereign LORD has given me a well instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary, He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen to one being instructed. He has opened my ears; I have not been rebellious, I have not turned away. Isaiah 50:4&5.

Beloved, let it be your decision today, to read, mark, meditate, memorize and speak the word of God daily and the word of God will reveal God to you daily. His word will lead you to eternal life in Jesus name. Our slogan should be NO BIBLE
