Families and the Gospel John 1:29-34

Can you say “I have testified Jesus is the Son of God?” If you aren’t talking about Jesus in your family, you aren’t testifying. If you are not walking your talk, your children will see your words as meaningless.

Family Ritual

New Year’s Resolutions...many have stopped making them because we're used to breaking them. But some resolutions are important to make and keep, as well as to improve on. Too often, we've become too busy to focus on what matters most. One such resolution is to spend more time with your family. Resolve to give each child in your family at least ten minutes of uninterrupted, focused, one-on-one time every day. Also, try to have at least one "Family Night" a month, if not every week. At mealtimes, put away all electronics and look each other in the eye as you talk about your day. And pray as a family at least once every day. These little resolutions will go a long way toward a stronger family. Happy New Year! Andre McCarville Director of Family Life and Missions Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I love talking with our young people throughout the diocese. Whether I see them atparishes, schools, or diocesan youth events, they are alive in their faith and always armedwith good questions. I often remind them that everyone is made in the image and likenessof God and, therefore, is worthy of being treated with dignity and respect. That certainlyincludes the unborn.

The annual March for Life will take place in Washington, D.C., on January 24, and Ionce again look forward to attending the national gathering with youth from throughoutour diocese. I am always impressed by their enthusiastic commitment to protecting themost innocent among us.

1 want to take this opportunity to offer my continued prayers and support for everyone inour diocese who will travel to the nation's capital for the March for Life. It will likely bea long and cold day, but well worth it! I also thank those who cannot make the trip, butwill take time to honor the sanctity of life either privately or by attending some of thelocal observances scheduled in the coming days throughout Altoona-Johnstown.

Our young people get it. They recognize that life is a gift more precious than anythingthey found under the Christmas tree a few weeks ago. They are great reminders that we,as Catholics, have a duty to celebrate and safeguard all life - from conception untilnatural death - not only at this time of the year, but always.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Rev. Mark L. Bartchak

Bishop of Altoona-Johnstown
