Nine Ways Generosity Can Change Your Life

According to a recent book by sociologists Christian Smith and Hillary Davidson called The Paradox of Generosity, the regular practice of generous giving is associated with “greater personal happiness, physical health, a sense of life purpose, avoidance of depression, and personal growth.”* As those of us in the church know, we receive so much more when we practice generous giving. According to a recent review of the book there are nine ways that generosity leads to a better life: *

1. Generosity fosters positive emotions that promote happiness and health.2. Generosity triggers the chemical systems in our brains that reduce stress and suppress pain.3. Generosity promotes our sense of personal agency and self-efficacy.4. Generosity provides us with positive, meaningful social roles and self-identities.5. Generosity reduces our tendency toward maladaptive self-absorption.6. Generosity reinforces our perception of abundance and blessing.7. Generosity expands our social networks and relational ties.8. Generosity expands our intellectual and emotional horizons by exposing us to the needs of others.9. Generosity is associated with a more active lifestyle.

I've always known that being generous was good, but I never knew it was THIS good. I hope you’ve discovered the blessing of generosity in your life.

In Christ,

Rob

Let's give a SHOUT OUT to Stacey Lewis, Tania Middlebrooks and Lauren Rome for an outstanding job with VBS this Summer! They did a great job getting together all the details from meetings, to fundraisers, to shopping, to decorating until their fingers were blistered. Their hard work did not go unnoticed and they are very appreciated! Looking forward to VBS 2016!

WE LOVE COOKIES & CANVAS!!!

Our church is excited to partner with ARM this fall in their mission to “extend the love of Christ through home repair”. We are planning to send a team of 15-20 people to Tuskegee, AL for a short term mission trip in October. This is a great opportunity to answer God’s call to the mission field while working within our family budgets and time constraints. Our team will leave from the church at 6:00pm on Thursday, October 15th, and return Sunday, October 18th, after worship. The cost will be $170 per person. This includes meals, lodging, and the materials for our projects. Registration closes September 4th, so don’t hesitate. Sign up today through the church office.

New Opportunities to Serve AreCloser Than Ever

A few of the churches in our district are uniting together to establish

a deeper relationship with our sisters and brothers of the Red Bird Missionary Conference in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky. To start this partnership, our local churches are sending a group of people to Kentucky to repair the roof of a building we will be utilizing each time we visit the region. This trip will take place the last week of July and will cost the participants around $100 each. Please contact Pastor Drew Willis at [email protected] for more information.

Grow. In-depth Bible studies will be offered again beginning in the fall.

Disciple Bible studies are four different studies of the Bible with the purpose of developing strong Christian leaders through regular in-depth study of Scripture. The New Revised Standard Version of the Bible is recommended for study.

Disciple I, Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study, is an overview of the entire Bible over the course of 34 weeks. It requires daily reading and study of approximately 30/45 minutes and a weekly group meeting with 10-12 people that lasts approximately 2 1/2 hours. This course is a prerequisite to the other Disciple studies.

Disciple II, Into the Word Into the World, studies Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts in a 32-week format with the same daily/weekly time commitment as Disciple I.

Disciple III, Remember Who You Are, continues the same format in studying the Prophets and the Letters of Paul.

Disciple IV, Under the Tree of Life, studies the writings of the Old Testament, John, and Revelation.

A new United Methodist study, Covenant, is a 24 week in-depth, comprehensive study of the whole Bible. It emphasizes the biblical concept of covenant as a unifying pattern through all the books of the Old and New Testaments. It also requires daily readings and a weekly meeting of approximately 2 hours.

If you would like to participate in either a Disciple class or Covenant group, please contact Leslie ([email protected] or 365-5977) or complete and return an interest form found in the bulletin.

Serve. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. -Peter 4:10
